In a first in cricket, the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL) saw a Red Card being flashed on the field for slow over-rate. The incident happened during the game between St Kitts and Nevis vs Trinbago Knight Riders in the first innings. As a result of the Red Card, Knight Riders' Sunil Narine had to leave the field as his team fielded with just 10 men and only two outside the circle in the final over.

The latest CPL rule, introduced this season, aims to ensure timely completion of each inning, i.e. in 85 minutes. the penalties are imposed if a team fails to start 18th, 19th and 20th over in time. The reprimands are as follows:

<ul>
	<li>If behind the required over rate at the start of the 18th over, one extra player must enter the fielding circle - for a total of five players inside the circle</li>
	<li>If behind the rate at the start of the 19th over, two extra fielders must enter the fielding circle - for a total of six inside the circle</li>
	<li>If behind the rate at the start of the final over, teams will lose a player from the field - selected by the captain - and have six inside the fielding circle</li>
	<li>The batting team will also be given a five-run penalty for each instance of time wasting after one warning by the on-field umpires.</li>

As per the rules, the 17th over of the innings must be completed by&nbsp;72 minutes and 15 seconds, the 18th by 76 and a half minutes, the 19th by 80 minutes and 45 seconds, and the last over within the stipulated 85 minutes.

Knight Riders captain Kieron Pollard wasn't very happy with the rule and said after that game, "To be honest, it will take away the hard work everyone has done. We are like the pawns and we are going to do what we are told. We are going to play as fast as we can. If you are penalised for 30-45 seconds in a tournament like this, it is absolutely ridiculous."

As for the match, Knight Riders eventually won the game by six wickets, chasing a 179-run target in just 17.1 overs.

Indian Premier League (IPL) cult hero Ambati Rayudu has joined St Kitts &amp; Nevis Patriots for the upcoming season of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) on Friday, August 11. Rayudu, winner of six Indian Premier League (IPL) titles recently announced his retirement from all forms of the game, but will play the role of marquee player in the CPL. Rayudu was last seen in action during the IPL 2023 final when he won the title against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.

In a sensational development, the 37-year-old could become the second player to play in the CPL after veteran star Pravin Tambe who represented Trinbago Knight Riders in 2020. However, the player still requires the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) approval to play in the league. Earlier, he had to withdraw from the inaugural edition of the Major League Cricket (MLC) due to a BCCI ruling.

"I'm really excited to be joining the St Kitts &amp; Nevis Patriots. I look forward to having a positive contribution to the team in the upcoming CPL 2023," Rayudu said.

BCCI's proposal to introduce a one-year cooling-off period for retired Indian players before they can participate in overseas franchise leagues was the major stumbling block for Rayudu playing in the MLC. However, it is expected that this won’t be an issue during the CPL and Rayudu will be free to join St Kitts &amp; Nevis Patriots. The former Mumbai Indians star has tons of experience in the shorter format, having delivered for all franchises he has played. With six IPL titles, he is the most successful player in the history of the IPL along with Rohit Sharma.

The six-team tournament is all set for kick-off on Thursday, August 17 as St Kitts &amp; Nevis Patriots try to claim their second title in three seasons.

Barbados Tridents used every bit of depth they had to start the defence of their Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title with a win over St Kitts &amp; Nevis Patriots that looked impossible just 15 balls into the match.

Sheldon Cottrell struck with his fourth ball, bowling Johnson Charles as he tried to whip to leg. He pinged Corey Anderson on the head first ball then had him caught at point by Evin Lewis, and when Hope sliced Tanvir to the same fielder the champions were reeling at 8/3 in the third over. Their response was spectacular.

Kyle Mayers took a Tanvir over for 14, and Jason Holder joined in by effortlessly flicking a Hero Maximum over square leg off Alzarri Joseph. Mayers pulled powerfully for two more sixes of his own, and from a hopeless position the Tridents found themselves 51/3 at the end of the GuardianLife Powerplay.

Holder flicked then drove Ish Sodhi for six, bringing up a 50 partnership off just 25 balls. But the game swung back the Patriots’ way once more in the space of two balls.

First Mayers crashed Emrit to deep cover, then Evin Lewis pulled off a direct hit to send back Jonathan Carter. The Tridents had gone from 8/3 to 69/3 to 69/5 as the game continued to move at a breathless pace. Raymon Reifer picked out a lone boundary fielder off Emrit, and Ben Dunk then held a beauty off Sodhi to dismiss the well-set Holder, but here the Tridents’ deep batting lineup came into its own

Ashley Nurse swung Joseph straight to Lynn, but Rashid Khan had jaws hitting floors with an astonishing helicopter flick for six. Santner fell timing a ball sweetly but straight to the fielder to leave Rashid batting with the capable Hayden Walsh Jr at no.11. 
 
Tanvir and Cottrell were just as impressive at the death as at the top, going for just seven off their combined fourth overs, but Rashid showed his power and craft to plunder a couple of late boundaries to drag the Tridents over 150. 
 
Walsh Jr let Lewis off the hook on zero, dropping a simple chance at point. But Santner kept things tight with the first maiden of Hero CPL 2020, Holder kept the pressure on, and that pressure told as Lynn carved Santner to Walsh Jr who held on this time. 
 
With Lewis struggling, the Patriots crawled to 33/1 off the Powerplay. Rashid’s first ball was loose and Lewis crashed it for four, but the Afghan showed yet another facet of his game to run out the dangerous Trinidadian. Joshua da Silva, promoted to three on T20 debut, crashed a drive into the bowlers’ wicket, and Rashid reacted first to knock out the remaining stumps and catch Lewis short.
