Karim considered second topmost leader in JMB in India after the organisation’s chief - Salauddin Salehin, was arrested by officials of STF along with local police from Murshidabad district of West Bengal.&nbsp;

“One Abdul Karim alias Boro Karim wanted in a W/A issued in c/w STF PS case no. 8/2017 dated 29.11.2017 has been arrested this morning from Suti PS area, Jangipur District Police with the assistance of local police.&nbsp; 
He will be produced before Ld Court today and we will seek PC,” said a senior police official from STF.&nbsp;

Karim, an Indian by nationality, was the main leader of the Dhulian module, involved in the Bodh Gaya Blast. While he actively provided logistics support and shelter to top leaders like Salauddin, sources in the agency reveal he was also part of the recruitment drives for JMB.&nbsp;

Acting on a tip-off, officers of Kolkata Police’s Special Task Force (STF) intercepted a vehicle – Maruti Suzuki A Star at EM Bypass on Tuesday.

On the interception, three persons – a Manipur based drug peddler, a Bihar drug peddler and the driver of the vehicle were detained. On interrogation and search of the vehicle, officers found the front and rear doors of the vehicle suspicious.

After the covering of the doors was removed, officers found packets concealed inside the cavity of the door. On the opening of the packets, a huge quantity of Amphetamines commonly known as Yaba tablets were recovered. The seized tablets weighed about 13.5 kilograms whose market value is more than Rs.3.5 crores.

Immediately the three persons occupying the vehicle were arrested. The arrested persons have been identified as Md. Amir Khan – a resident of Manipur, Md. Najir Hussain – another resident of Manipur and Jagesar Mahato – a resident of Bihar.

The accused persons were taken into custody and a case under section 22(c)/29 NDPS Act was registered. Later in the day, the three persons were produced before the court and remanded to police custody till February 25, 2020.

The Free Media Movement rights group said the police Special Task Force (STF) attempted to arrest a respected journalist for his writing on anti-Muslim riots and Buddhist extremists using the UN-backed law.

The STF told a magistrate on Friday they were pursuing freelance writer Kusal Perera under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act.

"The Free Media Movement strongly condemns the attempts to pursue legal action under the provisions of the ICCPR Act and urges all responsible stakeholders to draw their attention to avoid using the law unfairly," the group said.

Police have also drawn criticism over the detention of a Muslim woman during anti-Muslim riots last month. She was wearing a T-shirt with a print of a ship's steering wheel which police mistook for the Dharma Chakra, a Buddhist symbol.

The woman was held in remand custody for three weeks before a senior police officer intervened to press for her release.

Award-winning author and poet Shakthika Sathkumara has been held since April under the ICCPR act for his work hinting at homosexuality among the Buddhist clergy.

A senior police source told AFP separate investigations had been launched into the three cases.

"We feel that police exceeded their authority in using the ICCPR and we will take action against those responsible," the officer said, asking not to be named.

The leftist People's Liberation Front (JVP) party said police have arbitrarily detained several Muslim men and women since the Easter Sunday attacks that killed 258 people.

The suicide bombings on three churches and three hotels were blamed on local Muslim militants.

Sri Lanka abusing United Nations law to make arrests: Rights group

The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) raided seven petrol pumps which were allegedly using remote-controlled electronic chip in fuel dispensing machines to dupe unsuspecting consumers.

All seven petrol pumps have been sealed and about 14 people were being questioned in this connection, ASP (STF) Arvind Chaturvedi said.

Media reports said several petrol pumps in Delhi were also raided by police.

On a tip-off, STF sleuths last night picked up an electrician who used to instal these chips in petrol dispensing machines which reduced the fuel output, Arvind Chaturvedi revealed.

&quot;On his information, we carried out raids in seven petrol pumps and found that all of them were using the chip and making profits by saving petrol in every filling,&quot; the ASP said.

Raids will also be carried out in other parts of the state as the STF has information that the chip has been sold to a large number of pumps, he added.

The chip costing around Rs 3,000 when installed in the dispensing machines reduced the output by nearly five to ten per cent. The chip is attached with a wire which is linked with a remote control that set the limit, the STF added.

If the dispensing machine is fitted with this chip, a customer will get only 940 ml petrol for the price of one litre.

&quot;On an average, the petrol pumps using this device were earning an undue profit of Rs 14 lakh per month,&quot; the ASP said.&nbsp;
