"We will allow British visitors to enter Spain just like the rest of the European Union or Schengen area from 21 June freely and without the need for the quarantine," she told BBC News.

On Sunday, Spain will end its state of emergency that was imposed on March 14 due to coronavirus outbreak in the country and now the European nation will open its borders to EU and Schengen area countries for a much-needed tourism boost.

According to the minister, British tourists will be subject to the same "triple-check" as other European visitors, which consists of checking their origin, taking their temperature and providing contact details in case they need to be traced.

"We want to make sure we welcome visitors but do so in safety and security for them as well as for Spaniards," she said.

Spain is still in talks with the UK over similar kind of restrictions opened for Spaniards as she said the borders in the country were opening "out of respect for the 400,000 British citizens who have second residences in Spain" and who are "dying to benefit" from them.

Scientists in the UK have discovered a cheap and widely available drug called dexamethasone for COVID-19 patients that can save the lives of patients who are seriously ill with coronavirus.

The drug, dexamethasone, reduced death rates by a third for patients on ventilators, and by a fifth for patients needing oxygen.

The steroid prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation, a nasty symptom of coronavirus infection that makes breathing difficult.

According to the reports, Daily doses of dexamethasone could prevent one in eight ventilated patient deaths and save one out of every 25 patients requiring oxygen alone, the team said.

It was first discovered in 1957 and is commonly prescribed to patients with allergic disorders, skin conditions, ulcerative colitis, arthritis and some types of cancer.

“This is a result that shows that if patients who have COVID-19 and are on ventilators or are on oxygen are given dexamethasone, it will save lives, and it will do so at a remarkably low cost,” said Martin Landray, an Oxford University professor who is co-leading the trial.

His co-lead investigator, Peter Horby, said dexamethasone - a generic steroid widely used in other diseases to reduce inflammation - is “the only drug that’s so far shown to reduce mortality - and it reduces it significantly.”

Spain will reopen its borders to most European visitors from June 21, 10 days earlier than previously planned, the government said on Sunday, in a further easing of coronavirus restrictions but a week later than some other EU member states.

Spain will reopen its borders to most European visitors from June 21, 10 days earlier than previously planned, the government said on Sunday, in a further easing of coronavirus restrictions but a week later than some other EU member states. One of the world's most visited destinations, Spain has sent mixed signals on when it would reopen its borders as it tries to lure back tourists, having announced several dates in recent weeks. From June 21 - when Spain's state of emergency ends - it will allow the entry of visitors from the European Union and the open-border Schengen area, which also includes non-EU countries such as Switzerland and Norway, Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya tweeted. Visitors from outside the EU or Schengen area will be able to visit Spain from July 1, though that will hinge on their country's public health situation, Laya said. British visitors would be able to travel to Spain from June 21 since Britain is still considered part of the EU, a Spanish foreign ministry source said. Spain's borders are currently closed to tourists and those exempted from the entry ban must spend 14 days in quarantine as a precaution against the spread of COVID-19, which has so far killed more than 27,000 people in the country. "Tourism is a key sector for the economic recovery," Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez told a news briefing. "We have been able to corner the virus in our country and on the European continent... but the risk has not disappeared." Sanchez said Spain's land border with Portugal would remain closed till July 1 because Lisbon had requested it. The European Commission recommended on Thursday that Schengen area countries, which normally have no border checks, lift controls by June 15. After Spain's three-month-long state of emergency ends on June 21, wearing masks in public will remain mandatory until a cure or vaccine for COVID-19, the lung disease caused by the virus, is found. Spain will allow German tourists to start visiting its Balearic Islands from Monday as a test programme. Sanchez also said on Sunday a planned aid package to rescue Spain's automobile sector would total 3.7 billion euros, adding that further details would be announced on Monday. The lockdown has hammered car sales in Spain, and last month Nissan Motor Co said it would close its 3,000-workforce plants in Barcelona. The government has said it will try to reverse the decision.

Republican Senator Rick Scott of the United States has told in a television interview that he thinks China is actively working to disrupt the efforts of the US and other western countries to develop the vaccine.

"We have got to get this vaccine done. Unfortunately, we have evidence that communist China is trying to sabotage us or slow it down," he said during an interview.

"China does not want us ... to do it first, they have decided to be an adversary to Americans and I think to democracy around the world."

"This vaccine is really important to all of us getting our economy going again. What I believe is whether England does it first or we do it first, we are going to share. Communist China, they are not going to share."

Asked what evidence the United States had, Scott declined to give details but said it had come through the intelligence community.

Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa on Tuesday said that wearing masks in the country will be compulsory until the coronavirus pandemic has been wiped off once and for all.

He said the guidelines for the coronavirus will remain enforced despite the end of state emergency on June 12. He said, "It will remain in place until we permanently defeat the virus, which is when we have an effective treatment or vaccine against it".

Spain has forced people over the age of six to wear a mask since May 21. The country has asked its citizens to maintain a two-metre distance for security purposes.

Fines up to 100 euros ($113) have been introduced by the government to ensure the measure remains in place after the lockdown ends.

According to the new guidelines, the security distance will reduce to 1.5 metres.

Earlier, wearing masks were limited to those who were travelling in public transport in early May but it was expanded after the virus killed 27,000 people in the country.

With the epidemic now well under control, Spain has been easing out of its mid-March lockdown in a staged process due to finish by June 21, with the country to open its international borders from July 1.

Mask wearing is not compulsory for very young children although it is "recommended" for those between three and five.

The coronavirus pandemic inflicted a "swift and massive shock" that has caused the broadest collapse of the global economy since 1870 despite unprecedented government support, the World Bank said Monday.

The world economy is expected to contract by 5.2 per cent this year — the worst recession in 80 years — but the sheer number of countries suffering economic losses means the scale of the downturn is worse than any recession in 150 years, the World Bank said in its latest Global Economic Prospects report.

"This is a deeply sobering outlook, with the crisis likely to leave long-lasting scars and pose major global challenges," said World Bank Group Vice President for Equitable Growth, Finance and Institutions Ceyla Pazarbasioglu.

The depth of the crisis will drive 70 to 100 people into extreme poverty -- worse than the prior estimate of 60 million, she told reporters.

And while the Washington-based development lender projects a rebound for 2021, there is a risk the second wave of outbreaks could undermine the recovery and turn the economic crisis into a financial one that will see a "wave of defaults."

Economists have been struggling to measure the impact of the crisis they have likened to a global natural disaster, but the sheer size of the impact across so many sectors and countries has made it hard to calculate and made predictions about any recovery highly uncertain.

Under the worst-case scenario, the global recession could mean a contraction of eight per cent, according to the report.

But Pazarbasioglu cautioned: "Given this uncertainty, further downgrades to the outlook are very likely."

China still growing, barely

Although China is nearly alone in seeing modest growth this year, the depth of the slowdown in the world's second-largest economy will hinder recovery prospects in developing nations, especially commodity exporters, the World Bank warned.

While China will see GDP rise just one per cent, the World Bank said, the rest of the forecasts are grim: US -6.1 per cent, eurozone -9.1 per cent, Japan -6.1 per cent, Brazil -8 per cent, Mexico -7.5 per cent and India -3.2 per cent.

And things could get worse, meaning the forecasts will be revised even lower, the bank warned.

Though dramatic, the current forecast falls short of the Great Depression, which saw a global contraction of 14.5 per cent from 1930 to 1932, while the post-war downturn in 1945-1946 was 13.8 per cent, according to the World Bank.

Still, amid the still unfolding pandemic there remain some "exceptionally high" risks to the outlook, particularly if the of the disease lingers or rebounds, causing authorities to reimpose restrictions that could make the downturn as bad as eight per cent.

"Disruptions to activity would weaken businesses' ability to remain in operation and service their debt," the report cautioned.

That, in turn, could raise interest rates for higher-risk borrowers. "With debt levels already at historic highs, this could lead to cascading defaults and financial crises across many economies," it said.

But even if the 4.2 per cent global recovery projected for 2021 materializes, "in many countries, deep recessions triggered by COVID-19 will likely weigh on potential output for years to come."

Nearly 60 per cent of Canadians do not have confidence in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s abilities to prevent a deepening economic crisis amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, an Angus Reid poll revealed.

"Many Canadians express doubt about Trudeau’s ability to prevent worsening economic conditions. Asked how much confidence they have in Trudeau to prevent a deepening economic crisis, just over one-in-three (36 per cent) say that they feel confident with him in charge, while 58 per cent are not confident," Angus Reid said on Thursday.

The poll, however, found that a slight majority of Canadians - 52 per cent - entrust Trudeau to prevent more COVID-19-related fatalities.

Besides, Canadians are split regarding the worsening economic conditions versus health risks as 51 per cent of respondents said that they are concerned about the health risks amid the ongoing pandemic, while 49 per cent are vexed about the state of the economy in the coming months.

The novel coronavirus pandemic has had a profound effect on the Canadian economy with nearly a quarter of the labour force employed in February having had their income streams substantially affected and the unemployment rate rising to 13 per cent, according to the federal statistics agency.

Additionally, Statistics Canada announced earlier this week that the Canadian economy contracted by 8.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2020 in their Gross Domestic Product, Income and Expenditure First Quarter Report.

The Work From Home (WFH) Culture is here to stay! What began as a mark of precaution in many companies before the outbreak of Covid-19 in India, is set to be the norm for the coming times. Several companies across sectors as having even been rolling out WFH allowances and other benefits for their employees who are ensuring business continuity while operating remotely.

One of the major issues faced while working from homes and other remote locations is the unavailability of a proper workspace setup. The lack of ergonomic chairs, tables and other could lead to small discomforts such as backaches and neck aches, as a result of prolonged sitting.

California-Headquartered Freshworks that provides customer engagement software for businesses, had gone into WFH mode much before national lockdowns were enforced across the globe, besides rolling out an allowance for helping employee set-up a home workspace.

“All 3000 employees across 13 countries (Including India) are provided an allowance of 250USD(18000 INR) to procure the right tools, be it larger monitors, furniture or ergonomic keyboards etc.. Since we were early to start remote work, most of our employees were able to make use of this allowance before shops closed,” Suman Gopalan, CHRO of Freshworks told WION.

Companies that do not have a dedicated WFH allowance have permitted employees to utilize their Health and Fitness allowance to purchase the necessary home office furniture.

“Across India, over 400 full-time employees have been issued laptops and accessories. We also reimburse internet expenses for all employees and even interns. But in the case of furniture we have tied up with a vendor for the best deals and our employees can purchase from them and get it reimbursed up to Rs.5000” Karthikeyan, Manager Corporate Services, Lennox India Technology Centre told WION.

While relatively smaller firms have been able to provide such special allowances for furniture and gadgets, the big IT firms that employ lakhs of people worldwide have been enabling remote working by providing laptops, internet dongles and reimbursements for internet/phone bills.

Healthcare consultant Dr Sumanth C Raman said that that almost all companies have announced to continue WFH till the end of June or even August(assuming there is no drug or vaccine available). “Decisions may be taken to allow people to work in rotation and to explore other methods for the longer run. However, WFH involves huge cost savings for the companies. Right from power bills, rents, admin, house-keeping expenses to operating cafeterias and fleets of buses, this would have a significant impact on the bottom line of the companies” he told WION.

The recent weeks have also seen statements about long-term WFH plans from the chiefs of major Indian IT firms.

India’s largest firm Tata Consultancy Services plans to ask a vast majority of 75% of its 4.48 lakh employees globally (including 3.5 lakh in India) to work from home, up from the industry average of 20% today. The new model called 25/25 will require far less office space than occupied today.

HCL technologies too have proposed that going forward, they will allow 50% of their employees to work from home while the remaining would continue their work from offices in the next 12-18 months

At the Global level, Amazon.com Inc has said that employees that work in a. Roel that can be performed from home can continue to do so until October 2nd. It is not known as to what percentage of their total staff this applies to.

Google has also said that a vast majority of their employees will likely WFH til the end of this year, this came after Facebook had also made a similar announcement.

Work from home the new normal: Companies offer furniture, gadget allowance to employees

Spain on Tuesday proposed a legislation to deal with the plastic problem. Once in action, it will require the country to extensively cut down on single-use plastic packaging. The idea is to tax single-use plastic heavily so that people eventually stop using it.

"If we add up all the waste generated in a year in Spain... it would be enough to fill up the Santiago Bernabeu stadium 2,900 times," said Spain’s Environment Minister Teresa Ribera.

As per the proposed idea, the focus will be on plastic cups and bottles, that are used extensively across the food sector, mostly in take-away restaurants, which have now become the new norm owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"And just the plastic packaging from our homes alone would fill up 45 such stadiums," she added.

To improve compliance with European Union directives, Spanish ministers approved a draft law on waste and contaminants. Starting summer of 2021, Spain will begin banning single-use plastic products like cotton buds, straws, and plastic cutlery.

Moving on, by January 2023, the country will enforce a tax on plastic packaging. However, this implies that consumers will be forced to pay more if any single-use plastic items are used, be it in terms of food delivery or elsewhere.

"The special tax on single-use plastic containers will be indirect and will impact the manufacture, import or acquisition within the European Union of non-reusable plastic containers for use within the Spanish market," a ministry statement said, and AFP reported.

"This is a similar tax to that being implemented in other neighbouring countries such as the United Kingdom or Italy”, it further read.
