The cycle reaches its peak amid a solar maximum in a way that sometimes the magnetic North and South poles of Earth switch their places every decade. There is a surge in solar activity because of this dramatic flipping.&nbsp;

When the Sun reaches its solar maximum, the surface is filled with more sunspots and releases more solar flares and solar material known as&nbsp;coronal mass ejections (CMEs).

Sunspots appear like dark patches on the solar surface, they are cooler in comparison to their surroundings and are the hotbeds for solar eruptions.

Sun's solar flares and CMEs lead to solar storms which belts Earth with charged particles. After reaching our planet, these flares interact with the magnetic field of Earth and cause geomagnetic storms.

In the study, it was found that the atmosphere of the planet has a high concentration of heavy molecules, which included a good amount of water vapour. Because of this, the astronomers believed that it was a “steam world”.

At the start of the year,&nbsp;with the help of data collected by the Hubble Space Telescope, IREx researchers stated that they had found water in the atmosphere of GJ 9827 d, which made it the smallest exoplanet with a confirmed atmosphere.

These major findings opened new ways for scientists who are searching for life outside our Solar System.

Till now, the detection of atmospheres near smaller planets closer to Earth was an elusive goal.&nbsp;

“For now, all the planets we’ve detected that have atmospheres are giant planets, or at best mini-Neptunes,” stated lead study author Piaulet-Ghorayeb.

“These planets have atmospheres made up mostly of hydrogen, making them more similar to gas giants in the solar system than to terrestrial planets like Earth, which have atmospheres dominated by heavier elements," he said.

The observations were made by Piaulet-Ghorayeb and her team with the help of a Canadian instrument on JWST, the Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS).&nbsp;

With the help of transmission spectroscopy, the scientists observed the starlight which passed through the atmosphere of the planet as it transited (passed in front of) its host star, GJ 9827.

The new JWST observations were then combined with preliminary HST observations to provide strong evidence about how the planet’s atmosphere led to the observed spectral features and it did not occur because of the contamination from the system’s star.

It was observed that the exoplanet GJ 9827 stands different from others because of the composition of its atmosphere.&nbsp;

Piaulet-Ghorayeb combined JWST/NIRISS and HST data and showed that the atmosphere of GJ 9827 d is filled with heavier molecules and a quite large amount of water vapour, which is not the situation in the case of the hydrogen-dominated atmospheres of the larger planets.

With the combination of data from JWST's Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) with earlier HST data, Piaulet-Ghorayeb and her team showed that the atmosphere of the planet is significantly different from those of larger planets.&nbsp;

<h2>Florida battles Hurricane Milton</h2>

Flordia has been battling the hurricane since its landfall on October 10. According to reports, the category 5 hurricane struck the west coast at around 6 am IST.&nbsp;

Warnings regarding flash floods were issued by the National Hurricane Center (NHC), and the residents in areas like Tampa, Saint Petersburg, and Clearwater were asked to take shelter amid 'extremely dangerous' winds.

The NHC, citing the radar data, stated that Hurricane Milton had formed in the Gulf Of Mexico and had made landfall close to Siesta Key in Sarasota County on the western coast. It added that the winds were flowing at a speed of up to 193 km per hour.

As reported by The Guardian, the hurricane left more than two million homes and businesses without power.

The winds also reached the east coast of Florida and led to a delay in the launch of&nbsp;the Europa Clipper mission.&nbsp;

The NHC stated that a wind gust of 108 km per hour was reported from the NASA weather station in Cape Canaveral.

This study was led by researchers at Michigan Technology University and was taken ahead from a US Department of Defence project that was aimed at making edible food from plastic waste.

The process is called pyrolysis and in this plastic is broken down into oil, solids, and gas.

In a bioreactor, oil is fed to bacteria, which then produce 'biomass' with nutritional properties.

Separate research was conducted by Annemiek Waajen of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam to confirm whether microbes actually eat asteroid material. In this process, microbes were fed pieces of meteorite which fell on Earth.&nbsp;

In the research, which was published in the journals Astrobiology and Scientific Reports, Dr. Waajen said that the microbes consumed the rocks and then grew.

They found what it was spewing were two jets of carbon dioxide and a new jet of carbon monoxide pointed towards the Sun.

JWST's Near-Infrared Camera (or NIRCam) captured the galaxy cluster and the supernova in March, April, and May of last year.

The galaxy cluster G165 is situated 3.6 billion light-years from Earth. However, the supernova is even more distant and hence, older.

The gravitational lens appears to have flattened the galaxy cluster and light has been warped into an arc-like shape. There are three specks of light stretched across the arc - each speck is the same supernova.

Frye compared the supernova seen three times to a person appearing three times as seen from three different angles in a three-panelled vanity mirror.

“In the trifold mirror analogy, a time-delay ensued in which the right-hand mirror depicted a person lifting a comb, the left-hand mirror showed hair being combed, and the middle mirror displayed the person putting down the comb,” Frye said.&nbsp;

Researchers from the University of Arizona, along with an international group of scientists, studied the hot and uniquely inflated exoplanet. It is about the size of Jupiter but is only a tenth of its mass and has east-west asymmetry in its atmosphere. This means that the two edges of its atmosphere are significantly different.&nbsp;

The study has been published in the journal Nature Astronomy.

“This is the first time the east-west asymmetry of any exoplanet has ever been observed as it transits its star, from space,” lead author Matthew Murphy, a graduate student at the University of Arizona Steward Observatory, said.&nbsp;

Stating that JWST helped them make the astonishing discovery, Murphy said, "I think observations made from space have a lot of different advantages versus observations that are made from the ground."

This asymmetry means that temperature or cloud properties differ between the eastern and western hemispheres of the planet.&nbsp;

Notably, exoplanet WASP-107b is tidally locked to its star, which means one hemisphere is always facing the star while the other side is always dark. So there is&nbsp;a permanent day side and a permanent night side of the exoplanet.

Using the transmission spectroscopy technique, the telescope took a series of pictures of the planet as it passed in front of its host star. Using the special tools at their disposal, the researchers separated the signals of the atmosphere’s eastern and western sides.&nbsp;

They then looked at specific processes happening in the exoplanet’s atmosphere.

WASP-107b has a temperature of roughly 890 degrees Fahrenheit. It has a very low density and relatively low gravity, which translates to a more inflated atmosphere than other exoplanets of its mass.

“We don’t have anything like it in our own solar system. It is unique, even among the exoplanet population,” Murphy said.

Speaking to WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Lazaro said ties between the two countries were on an "upward trajectory" and welcomed the comments by EAM Dr S Jaishankar supporting Philippines sovereignty amid Chinese aggressive actions. She highlighted: "It is very important to us, and we thank the Indian government for the kind of support that has given us, by stating and by supporting the arbitral award of 2016." It is very important to us, and we thank the Indian government for the kind of support that has given us, by stating and by supporting the arbitral award, this is very important to us, because the anchor of our foreign policy with regards to the South China Sea, is the 1982 UNCLOS-United Nations convention with the law and the 2016 Arbitral award. So the statement that has been given by the Indian government is very important. Sidhant Sibal: You specifically take care of ASEAN as well. So as a country coordinator what elements you're looking forward to in terms of how India can engage with the ASEAN grouping? The Philippines is the country coordinator of India-ASEAN ties. Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Well, we've just started the coordinatorship this July, and we're now preparing for the summit that will take place from 8 to 10 October. President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr will be present, and of course, I'm sure the Indian Prime Minister will also be there. But I think what is important here is, functional cooperation and a lot of cooperation in political and economic aspects. If my recollection is correct, there will be two outcome documents that will come out, and we're now working and negotiating documents that will play a very important role. We also believe that we have to support the humanitarian aspect. I think the Myanmar people are having their difficulties and challenges, and therefore the humanitarian aspect is very important to us. We would like to play a more important role, and we are just looking into this matter as time progresses. Sidhant Sibal: India gave the BrahMos missiles to your country. How do you see this? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: For very specific matters, I leave it to our Department of National Defense. But I think the acquisition of BrahMos is a very important aspect of the National Defense position. And I think this will be part of our deterrent capabilities in our present situation, and this will be an important aspect of our defence and security issue. Sidhant Sibal: There are more plans in terms of defence engagement. There are reports saying that India, the Philippines plan to get a lot of defense assets, like helicopters from India. I'm not very particular, not very knowledgeable of these acquisitions. During the strategic dialogue, we have somebody from our national defence and maybe in a better position to say. Sidhant Sibal: One of the big worries emerging from your region is the Chinese aggressive actions, particularly with the Filipino vessels. We have seen those visuals of the Chinese vessels ramming into your vessels. What do you have to say about that, as to what is the current situation on the ground, in fact, on the sea right now? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Well, thank you for that question. It was just last weekend that there were really a number of incidents which happened. It is the position of the Philippines that despite these incidents, of course, our operational agencies are very much aware of this. However, we do not discount, and we will continue to also, go to that aspect of a diplomatic resolution. Area is really an exclusive economic zone, therefore we have every right to be there, but there still can be a political discussion on this matter. Sidhant Sibal: But ma'am, do you see the situation getting more worrisome, because almost for months now, we have seen the same things happening there at that location? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: I want to bring you back to the Second Thomas Shoal. At the Second Thomas Shoal, we had some kind of conditional arrangement with China on how to deal with that Shoal. This is where this ship, Sierra Madre is present, due to some diplomatic discussions, we were able to have some conditional arrangement. Now, there is this another issue now on Sabina Shoal and again, despite those incidents that happened, we still think that we cannot discount some possible diplomatic discussions. Sidhant Sibal: That's a very optimistic view when it comes to China, because India is also facing aggressive actions by the Chinese. But essentially, when it comes to the situation there, have you spoken about the situation with your partners, with your allies? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Definitely, we have our only treaty ally, the United States, and we are like minded countries who have been supporting us on this matter. They've been giving us very important statements of support. I'm sure you've been reading about it, and we do not want this issue to escalate. And therefore I may sound optimistic, but that's optimism, something that one should, one should also look at. But in this particular matter, we cannot. It's very important since any accidental situation might happen. It is our view that a diplomatic discussion is still something that can be dealt with. Sidhant Sibal: Have you discussed the issue with India? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Well, I think to a certain extent, we've been talking to your people, your embassy in Manila, they're aware of certain moves that we're making, because you're our allies, you are our friends, like-minded partners of the Philippines. Lazaro: Well, that's a very good question, and we have just been talking to my colleagues here, particularly the ambassador. We're going to fully launch e-Visa. I think it's very important that we also capture a good number of Indian tourists who visit the Philippines and vice versa. So that is the position that we have taken. Perhaps there will be other innovations that we can come out with. Sidhant Sibal: But no direct flight between India and the Philippines? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Yeah, it's really unfortunate that, because connectivity is very important, and therefore, I think we have some air services agreement coming up. It's part of all these political talks.I think it's a matter of time, but we will have some direct flights, Manila-Delhi. What are these visas for if the connectivity is poor, and I think it is up to us to strengthen our connectivity. Sidhant Sibal: Space cooperation? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Well, the Philippine Space Agency, a very, very new agency of the government that was established during the time of President Marcos has already started, having discussions, or even a possible MOU with your space agency, and they're looking at your at the Indian Space Agency as one of those agencies that can really assist us in our issues, with the things that can be done through space. So there's a lot of activities that they're coming up with, and I think this is the new development, all these things that are happening in space, a lot of direction and impact, data, agriculture, climate change and so forth and so on. Sidhant Sibal: Your final words as to, where do you see this relationship going forward? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Positive and upward trajectory, I can only say that the relations between our two countries will still move upward, and with a possible visit and exchange of visits of high government officials, that it will take its greater heights. And I think it's about 75 years, which is really a monumental number of years of ties. we're looking forward to such an expansion in strengthening ties.

Garan is not only an astronaut but also a fighter pilot and a social entrepreneur. He has spent time on a space shuttle, the Russian Soyuz spacecraft and the International Space Station. Looking down on Earth, he says he was hit by a 'sobering realisation'.

In an interview with Big Think, Garan said that people on Earth treat the "life-support systems of our planet as the [...] subsidiary of the global economy". Every human-made system is treated that way, he said.&nbsp;

"I saw an iridescent biosphere teaming with life. I didn't see an economy, but since our human-made systems treat everything including the very life-support systems of our planet as the [...] subsidiary of the global economy, it's obvious from the vanish point of space that we're living a lie," he said.

He says that after he returned from space, his perspective changed due to the 'Overview Effect'. Things started appearing differently to him after he saw how Earth was hanging in the darkness of space.&nbsp;

"The Overview Effect describes the shift that astronauts have when they see the planet hanging in the blackness of space," Garan said. "There's this lightbulb that pops up when we realize how interconnected and interdependent we all are," he added.

<h2>Humanity is 'floating in darkness'</h2>

Humanity faces a lot of problems on Earth - wars, hunger, poverty and more. Countries are fighting with each other for territory, the rich are busy filling their vaults and more. The problems, Garan says, continue to remain because humanity does not see the "actual picture".&nbsp;

The country had announced the plan to shift its capital in 2015 and had stated that the new city will be constructed, which has been currently dubbed the New Administrative Capital (NAC).&nbsp;

The government authorities have not yet finalised the name of the city which will cover a 700 square kilometre (270 square-mile) wide area around 45 kilometres (28 miles) east of Cairo.

Now in August 2024, the lines have changed and some of the mega landmarks of the megaproject can be seen.&nbsp;

In the beige of the desert, the waved line of green is Green River Park which has been designed to give space for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Initially, it was estimated that the project would cost $45 billion, however, recent estimates suggest that it will go closer to $58 billion.&nbsp;

"Small&nbsp;primordial black holes&nbsp;can be produced during the very early stages of the universe, and if they are not too small, their decay due to Hawking radiation [a hypothetical phenomenon of black holes emitting particles due to quantum effects] will not be efficient enough to get rid of them, so they would still be around now,"&nbsp;said Patrick Peter, director of research at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), who was not involved in the study, while speaking to Live Science.
