India has accorded utmost priority to these domains in its own developmental journey, at the same time connectivity initiatives should always respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries."</p>

<p>The minister also exuded confidence about the recently launched landmark&nbsp;India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).</p>

<p>IMEC was launched on the sidelines of the G20 summit hosted by New Delhi and is touted to be a rival of China's BRI.&nbsp;China's white elephant projects in lesser economically advanced nations are often seen as expansionistic ambitions of Beijing and are&nbsp;widely condemned.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jaishankar said, "We should bear in mind that the Global South should not be saddled with unviable debt arising from opaque initiatives. I am confident that the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor and the International North–South Transport Corridor could become enablers in bringing economic prosperity to the region."</p>

<p>The minister also highlighted the issue of a "broken supply chain" at the SCO meeting in Kyrgyzstan.</p>

<p>"Today when the world is facing challenges, looming economic recession, broken supply chains, food and energy insecurity this calls for closer cooperation with the SCO. In this context, the centrality of the interests of Central Asian States plays a key role,"&nbsp;said Jaishankar.</p>

<p>He&nbsp;called for greater economic growth as the war rages on in West Asia.</p>

<p>EAM Jaishankar also wished success to Pakistan for taking over the chair of SCO Heads of Government for 2024.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 2022 Bali G20 Summit in Indonesia, was also dominated by the Russia-Ukraine war however there is a stark contrast between the then declaration and at the summit under India's presidency.</p>

<p>The G20 Leaders’ Declaration which was adopted at the Bali summit in Bali had rebuked Russia as an aggressor.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Bali Declaration condemned "in the strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine and demands its complete and unconditional withdrawal from the territory of Ukraine”.</p>

<p>“Most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine and stressed it is causing immense human suffering and exacerbating existing fragilities in the global economy — constraining growth, increasing inflation, disrupting supply chains, heightening energy and food insecurity, and elevating financial stability risks. There were other views and different assessments of the situation and sanctions. Recognising that the G20 is not the forum to resolve security issues, we acknowledge that security issues can have significant consequences for the global economy," the Bali text read.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, India was able to carve out a consensus at the G20 Summit and was able to work out a language that did not condemn Russia in a straightforward manner yet roped in everyone to agree to the declaration on the issue that was anticipated to be a big roadblock earlier.&nbsp;<br />

The Delhi Declaration mentions that the G20 forum notes with “deep concern the immense human suffering and the adverse impact of wars and conflicts around the world”.</p>

<p>"We call on all states to uphold the principles of international law including territorial integrity and sovereignty, international humanitarian law, and the multilateral system that safeguards peace and stability. The peaceful resolution of conflicts and efforts to address crises as well as diplomacy and dialogue are critical. We will unite in our endeavour to address the adverse impact of the war on the global economy and welcome all relevant and constructive initiatives that support a comprehensive, just, and durable peace in Ukraine that will uphold all the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter for the promotion of peaceful, friendly, and good neighbourly relations among nations in the spirit of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’," mentions the Delhi Declaration shared after Indian PM announced its adoption.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Through the Delhi Declaration, G20 leaders also termed the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons "inadmissible".</p>

<p>"In line with the UN Charter, all states must refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition against the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of any state. The use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible," the statement added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, there were challenges as world leaders, especially China, Russia, and the US, had disagreements on the language of the text related to the Ukraine war at G20 ministerial meetings in India. However, with the commencement of the G20 Leaders' Summit on September 9, India was able to persuade all the leaders reaching a common ground.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We appreciate the efforts of Turkiye and UN-brokered Istanbul Agreements consisting of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Russian Federation and the Secretariat of the United Nations on Promoting Russian Food Products and Fertilizers to the World Markets and the Initiative on the Safe Transportation of Grain and Foodstuffs from Ukrainian Ports (Black Sea Initiative), and call for their full, timely and effective implementation to ensure the immediate and unimpeded deliveries of grain, foodstuffs, and fertilizers/inputs from the Russian Federation and Ukraine. This is necessary to meet the demand in developing and least developed countries, particularly those in Africa," the Delhi statement further read.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The last leg of Karnataka assembly elections saw a massive political storm brewing between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress over Sonia Gandhi’s alleged remarks that seemingly endorsed “sovereignty” for India’s southern Karnataka state.</p>

<p>On Monday morning, a delegation of the BJP went to the country’s poll panel, the Election Commission of India (ECI), to lodge a complaint and sought punitive action against her.</p>

<p>&nbsp;“She (Sonia Gandhi) deliberately used the word sovereignty. Congress manifesto is the agenda of the 'Tukde-Tukde' (anti-national) gang and hence they are using such words. We hope EC will take action against this anti-national act,” Union Minister Bhupender Yadav told reporters outside the office.</p>

<p>The saffron party urged the Election Commission to revoke the registration of the Congress party "that acts in clear violation of the mandatory oath of upholding the Sovereignty, Unity &amp; Integrity of India" and sought appropriate preventive and punitive action in accordance with the Model Code of Conduct.</p>

<p>In response, the poll body&nbsp;issued&nbsp;a letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to provide clarification and take rectification measures with a Twitter post put up on the Official INC Twitter handle and attributed to Sonia Gandhi.</p>

<p>"The Commission received a complaint dated 8th May 2023 submitted by the leaders of BJP, Bhupender Yadav, Dr Jitendra Singh, Tarun Chugh, Anil Baluni and Om Pathak...According to the complaint made by BJP, the above tweet is violative of the mandatory oath undertaken by the political parties under section 29A (5) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 at the time of registration,"&nbsp;Election Commission said in its notice.</p>

<p>The BJP moved the EC a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while campaigning in Karnataka, lambasted Sonia Gandhi for “insulting” India’s sovereignty by suggesting secession of the southern state from the rest of the country.</p>

<p>&nbsp;“Not only Karnataka, I want to tell this to the entire country with a lot of pain that in this election Congress’s ‘shahi parivar’ (royal family) yesterday came to Karnataka and said that they want to protect the ‘sovereignty’ of Karnataka,” he said.</p>

<p>“Do you know what is the meaning of it... When a country becomes independent, that country is called a sovereign country. The meaning of what Congress is saying is that the Congress believes that Karnataka is separate from India,” he said.</p>

<p>Modi was responding to a Twitter post from Congress’ official account on May 6 which had quoted Sonia Gandhi as saying during an election rally in Huballi-Dharwad, “The Congress will not allow anyone to pose a threat to Karnataka's reputation, sovereignty or integrity."</p>

<p>Gandhi, in a scathing attack on the BJP, said, "Karnataka and the rest of the country cannot make progress without getting rid of the ruling party’s loot, lies, ego and hatred."</p>

<p>She was joined on the stage by Congress President M Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Karnataka's former&nbsp;chief minister Jagadish Shettar, who recently quit BJP over the denial of a ticket and joined the party.</p>

<p>Congress fielded Shettar, a six-time MLA, from the Hubli-Dharwad Central constituency, from where he had won the previous Assembly polls in 2018.</p>

<p>Karnataka will vote in a single-phase election on May 10 and the results will be declared on May 13.</p>

<p>China&rsquo;s foreign ministry has accused a US warship of entering its territorial waters without permission and said it would take &ldquo;necessary measures&rdquo; to ensure its sovereignty is protected.</p>

<p>On the evening of January 17, the missile destroyer USS Hopper came within 12 nautical miles of Huangyan Island in the South China Sea, the ministry said on its website on Saturday.</p>

<p>Huangyan Island is also known as the Scarborough Shoal, a disputed territory in the South China Sea claimed by the Philippines as well as China.</p>

<p>China&rsquo;s navy ordered the vessel to withdraw after determining its identity, Lu Kang, China&rsquo;s foreign ministry spokesman, was quoted as saying.</p>

<p>Lu said the ship violated China&rsquo;s sovereignty and security interests and threatened the safety of China&rsquo;s vessels and personnel in the vicinity.</p>

<p>The United States has criticized China for constructing islands and military installations in the region, saying they could be used to restrict free nautical movement. US vessels have conducted a series of &ldquo;freedom of navigation&rdquo; patrols in the region.</p>

<p>China &ldquo;firmly opposes&rdquo; efforts to use freedom of navigation as an excuse to hurt its sovereignty and urges the United States to &ldquo;correct its mistakes&rdquo;, Lu said.</p>

<p>In a separate statement on Saturday, China&rsquo;s defence ministry said the repeated dispatch of US warships to the region was &ldquo;undermining regional peace and stability&rdquo; and hurting bilateral relations.</p>

Rajapakshe was accused of violating collective responsibility at the United National Party (UNP) working committee meeting held last week.<br />
He was asked to correct his statement which was critical of the government&#39;s deal with China, but he did not respond positively to the request.<br />
Rajapakshe was quoted as saying that the port deal was the betrayal of the country&#39;s sovereignty and he would make sure that the port is taken back from China.<br />
UNP general secretary Kabir Hashim said the UNP has requested Sirisena to remove Rajapakshe form the Cabinet.<br />
Under the 99-year lease agreement, China&#39;s state-run conglomerate China Merchant Port Holdings is to invest up to US $ 1.1 billion in the port and marine-related activities.<br />
The accumulated loss from the port was more than US $&nbsp;300 million and the money realised from deal will set off the debts owed to China, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had said.<br />
Rajapakshe, who is also the minister in charge of the Buddhist order, was previously accused of aiding and abetting an extremist Buddhist monk who was promoting violence against the Muslim minority.<br />
The UNP has also charged that Rajapakshe as the Minister of Justice had hampered the investigations against the family of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, whose nearly a decade- long rule was ended by Sirisena in 2015.<br />
The UNP said that investigations against former strongman Rajapaksa and his followers on alleged misdeeds had taken over two and a half years, and Rajapakshe was responsible for deliberate slowing down of investigations.<br />
Rajapakshe denied the accusation, saying it was not proper for the government to interfere in the judiciary.</p>
