The legislation was approved by the Japanese Parliament Diet's upper chamber on Wednesday. The House of Representatives, the nation's lower chamber, had already cleared the bill in April.

The legislation will go into effect on April 1 next year. Here's all you need to know.

<h2>How will the government help lonely people?</h2>

Local governments and the state will have to work hand-in-hand to tackle social loneliness and isolation, which as per the legislation is "an issue for the entire society".

The legislation calls for the creation of a task force that will be headed by the nation's prime minister. This task force will work on the implementation of countermeasures at the cabinet office. At the same time, it will require the government to formulate a priority policy that will serve as guidelines for such measures.

Japan has taken several steps to tackle the problem. In 2021, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the nation created a post of minister in charge of measures against loneliness and isolation.

A dedicated council was set up at the Central Secretariat and the government also ran an around-the-clock telephonic consultation service, and launched a chatbot-based website.

<h2>Will the government work alone under the legislation?</h2>

No, it obliges local governments to set up regional councils made up of groups that offer help to people suffering from social isolation.&nbsp;

As per Japan Times, local governments will provide these groups with personal information on individuals suffering from the effects of such isolation. These groups will have to keep the shared information confidential. Any violation of this rule can earn these groups fines up to ¥500,000 or $3,600, and up to 12 months in jail.

<h2>People of what ages are affected?</h2>

As per the legislation, loneliness and social isolation can "affect anyone at any stage of his or her life".&nbsp;Experts say that these issues are one huge factor behind an increase in the number of suicides.

In a survey conducted by the Japanese government in 2022, 40.3 per cent of people said they felt lonely. This number was up 3.9 percentage points from the preceding year.&nbsp;

Compared to this, the number of people who said they have never felt lonely dropped by 5.3 percentage points to 18.4 per cent.

20,000 individuals aged 16 and up were sent the survey. Of them, 56.1 per cent responded to make up the survey results mentioned above.

The survey helped highlight the need for support measures that could help in the early stages of the problem. Additionally, it also sheds light on the importance of the creation of an environment where people facing social isolation can ask for help.

Based on research carried out both in a laboratory setting and during the COVID-19 quarantine periods, the study suggests that social personality traits may also influence the individual's reaction to social isolation.

As per SciTechDaily, just as prolonged periods without food can lead to hunger, a lack of social interaction can lead to a craving response in the brain, driving us to seek social connections again.&nbsp;

This is supported by the "social homeostasis" theory, which proposes that there is a homeostatic system in place to independently regulate our need for social interaction.&nbsp;

Although our understanding of the psychological reactions to social isolation remains limited, the study’s authors propose that lowered energy may be part of our homeostatic response to a lack of social contact and a potential precursor of the more detrimental effects of long-term social isolation.

The study involved 30 female volunteers who, on three separate days, spent eight hours in isolation without social contact, without food, or with both social contact and food. They reported their stress, mood, and fatigue levels multiple times throughout the day, while physiological stress responses such as heart rate and cortisol were recorded by the scientists.&nbsp;

The results were compared with measurements from a study conducted during the lockdown in Austria and Italy in the spring of 2020.&nbsp;

Data from 87 participants who had spent at least an eight-hour period in isolation were used, and their stress and behavioural effects were assessed several times a day for seven days.

The results of the laboratory study led by Giorgia Silani from the University of Vienna showed similarities between social isolation and food deprivation, with both inducing lowered energy and heightened fatigue.&nbsp;

"In the lab study, we found striking similarities between social isolation and food deprivation. Both states induced lowered energy and heightened fatigue, which is surprising given that food deprivation literally makes us lose energy, while social isolation would not", said first authors Ana Stijovic and Paul Forbes.

The authors propose that lowered energy may be a part of our homeostatic response to a lack of social contact and a potential precursor of some more detrimental effects of long-term social isolation.&nbsp;

"It is well-known that long-term loneliness and fatigue are related, but we know little about the immediate mechanisms that underlie this link. The fact that we see this effect even after a short period of social isolation suggests that low energy could be a 'social homeostatic' adaptive response, which in the long run can become maladaptive,"&nbsp;explains Silani.

Speaking to the media present there, she said time had gone by fast and she did not want to come out.

"When they came in to get me, I was asleep. I thought something had happened. I said: 'Already? Surely not.' I hadn't finished my book," she said.

According to Flamini's support team, she broke the world record for the longest period of time spent in a cave during an experiment that was observed by scientists looking at the human brain and circadian rhythms.

Many historic events have gone by in the time the athlete spent inside the cave. Before the Ukraine War broke out, Spain's COVID mask law came to an end, and Britain's Queen Elizabeth II passed away, Flamini set off on her adventure on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2021.

Her team said that she did emerge for eight days, but she remained sequestered in a tent as they worked to fix the router that allowed her to communicate with them through voice and video.&nbsp;

About pressing her panic button, she said, "Never. In fact I didn't want to come out."

Flamini worked out, painted and knitted wool caps while she was underground. According to her support crew, she brought two GoPro cameras to record her journey and consumed 1,000 litres of water. She took 60 books with her when she entered.&nbsp;

"On day 65, I stopped counting and lost perception of time," she said.&nbsp;She said that her attention had been on maintaining "coherence," eating healthily, and savouring the stillness. She eagerly anticipated the delicacies like avocados, fresh eggs, and clean t-shirts that her support crew sent down before acting "like gods." They took care of her waste too.&nbsp;

"I didn't talk to myself out loud, but I had internal conversations and got on very well with myself," she joked.

"You have to remain conscious of your feelings. If you're afraid, that's something natural but never let panic in or you get paralysed."

"If it's no communication it's no communication regardless of the circumstances. The people who know me knew and respected that."
