The internet is full of remedies that claim to fix your acne but if you've tried a few, you'd know that hardly any of those hacks work. TikTokers are notorious for suggesting weird and sometimes completely insane quick fixes for our skin concerns. But, the Sunburning Acne trend easily takes the cake for drumrolls...The Worst Beauty Skincare Trend of 2024.

What exactly is the Sunburning Acne trend?

As the name suggests, the weird skincare trend involves sunburning your skin to the point that the acne disappears. Instead of using topical creams with salicylic acid or other acne-fighting ingredients, some TikTokers are claiming to use UV rays to diminish their acne and breakouts.

Content creator Haley Wenthold, 19, shared a video on TikTok and swore by the trend. "Telling the sun to burn off my acne," she captioned her video on TikTok, which garnered more than 1.7 million views in just a few days.

In the TikTok clip, Wenthold claimed that "the trend actually works". And, in the comment section, many others seemed to agree.

Why you shouldn't try this trend?

There are a ton of reasons why you shouldn't try this trend. First and foremost, if you have reoccurring acne, it's clear that you have sensitive skin. Repeated sun exposure can lead to sunburns, which can increase your risk of skin cancer. It can also cause premature ageing and precancerous skin lesions.

You must not go out in the sun without wearing sunscreen. Contrary to what the trend suggests, you must wear broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 or higher to keep your skin protected.

Extended sun exposure can also leave your skin feeling ultra dry. At the same time, it can result in your sebaceous glands going into overdrive and resulting in excess sebum production, which is one of the key factors in the formation of blemishes. So instead of fixing your acne, it might be making it worse.

So what should you do?

Getting in touch with a dermatologist to get a proper assessment of your skin concern is recommended. If you wish to try a few remedies before going to the medical expert, try using tea tree oil as a spot treatment. If your acne is severe and nothing seems to work, your doctor may prescribe Accutane (Isotretinoin) to you. The prescription drug can only be taken under a doctor's supervision.

TikTokers are 'sunburning' their acne! Here's why you shouldn't try this latest trend

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States has found bacterial contamination in nearly half of permanent makeup (PMU) ink samples and about a quarter of tattoo ink products. The samples also included products from popular brands that claim to be "sterile."

The scientists tested 75 tattoo and PMU inks for the presence of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, the findings of which were published in the Applied and Environmental Microbiology journal on Tuesday (Jul 2).

With the growing trend of using tattoos and PMU inks, the FDA has warned people of contamination in these products which have previously resulted in outbreaks of infections. The FDA also issued guidelines for tattoo ink manufacturers and distributors last year, urging them to take precautions and prevent contamination by microorganisms.

Researchers examined 49 tattoo ink samples, out of which nine had bacterial growth. While testing for PMU inks, 17 out of 35 were found to be contaminated.

It was also discovered that 35 per cent of the sealed and unopened inks which were tested had both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria contamination.

Aerobic bacteria are bacteria which can survive and grow in the presence of oxygen, while anaerobic bacteria can survive even without the presence of oxygen. They can live in the dermal skin layer and injured human tissue.

It is not immediately known which brands were included in the study and whether the FDA took any measures against the brands of which products were found to be contaminated.

Researchers claim that the sterilisation process undertaken by brands is either ineffective or their claims are false regarding them being "sterile".

Previously, it was believed that tattoo-related infections and complications are caused by allergic and inflammatory reactions due to improper hygiene. However, recent studies have pointed out that contamination of the ink may also be the reason.

A confident look is greatly enhanced by having good skin and hair, which exude a sense of assurance that is felt by both oneself and other people. Skin that is vibrant and free of blemishes and inflammation is a reflection of an inner balance that is harmonic.

Having no skin and hair concerns promotes confidence and enables one to interact with others without being distracted by self-consciousness. The glow of healthy skin serves as a blank canvas on which self-assurance may be projected, indicating that one appreciates and invests time in their well-being.

Achieving a confident appearance through healthy skin and hair is not only a matter of cosmetic concern but also reflects your overall well-being. Your skin and hair are mirrors of your internal health, and maintaining them in good condition can greatly enhance your self-confidence. This approach involves a holistic consideration of your body's health, emphasising the importance of both internal and external care.

From a medical standpoint, healthy skin and hair are often indicative of a balanced diet, proper hydration, and a well-functioning immune system. Ensuring that you consume a variety of nutrient-rich foods can provide essential vitamins and minerals that contribute to skin and hair health. Foods rich in antioxidants, such as fruits, vegetables, and nuts, help combat free radicals that can damage skin cells. Adequate hydration is crucial as well, as water helps flush out toxins and maintain the skin's elasticity.

Chronic stress can trigger skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, and eczema while also leading to hair loss. Engaging in relaxation techniques, regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy sleep pattern can go a long way toward managing stress levels.

When it comes to external care, a doctor would recommend a consistent skincare routine tailored to your skin type. Cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturising help maintain skin health by removing impurities, promoting cell turnover, and preventing dryness. Sun protection is paramount, as UV radiation can cause premature ageing and increase the risk of skin cancer. Regular use of broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential.
