Serbia vs Switzerland at FIFA World Cup 2022: Match prediction, preview, head-to-head and lineups

The action continues in the FIFA World Cup 2022 edition, in Qatar, as Cameroon will be up against Serbia in a crucial Group H encounter on Monday (November 28). Both sides are coming into this fixture on the back of a dismal start to their campaigns with a loss in their opening games. While Cameroon lost to Switzerland, 0-1, the Serbians faced a much tougher opposition in the form of Brazil and went down 0-2. Thus, it is a must-win game for both sides if they wish to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

For the African nation, they will look to avoid equalising an unwanted record, with Mexico. In the FIFA World Cup history, Cameroon have now lost eight straight games, after their face-off versus the Swiss. Mexico leads the list with nine consecutive defeats, hence, Cameroon will look to not match the Mexicans and end their winless streak. Serbia, on the other hand, have also lost eight of their ten FIFA WC games and have a 80% loss percentage. Hence, they will also look to better their overall record in the mega event with a good performance.

Dispute over vehicle license plates: EU-mediated Serbia-Kosovo talks fail

Amid the car plates dispute straining relations between Kosovo and Serbia, the European Union on Monday warned of "escalation and violence'. Both countries have held emergency talks but have failed to find a solution to the problem.

"After many hours of discussion ... the two parties did not agree to a solution today," EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement to the media.

"I think that there is an important responsibility on the sides of both leaders for the failure of the talks today and for any escalation and violence that might occur on the ground in the following days."

Kosovo has a Serbian minority population. This year, Kosovo has asked everyone to change old car plates that date before 1999 when Kosovo was part of Serbia. The Serbian minority in Kosovo is against this imposition. However, in spite of the protests, Kosovo has said that it will begin issuing fines from Tuesday.

Borrell said he would inform the EU member states of the two countries' "lack of respect for their international legal obligations" and warned that, given their commitment to joining the bloc, they should act accordingly.

"The Serbian side was completely constructive and we were accepting the texts that were changed 10 times, but the Albanian side did not want to accept anything, not for a second, they would always add something that was clearly not possible," Vucic told reporters after the meeting.

Kurti, for his part, said he was ready to hold further meetings to normalise relations between Belgrade and Pristina, not just to deal with one issue.

"We cannot be irresponsible and not treat the actual issues ... We cannot turn ourselves into state leaders that are dealing only with car plates and are not talking how to normalize their relations," he told reporters in Brussels.

Hundreds of Serb policemen in Kosovo, working in Jarinje and Brnjak border posts in the north of the country submitted resignations on Sunday (November 6). The step was taken in defiance of Kosovo's order to use Kosovan license plates instead of those issued by Serbia.

The 300 resignations in the northern town of Mitrovica, reported by Serbian media, are part of a wider Serb movement to withdraw from state institutions including, courts, police, parliament and government.

Several thousand Serbs gathered in North Mitrovica to protest against mandatory Kosovan plates. The crowd waved Serban flags and played Serbian national anthem.

The long-running licence plate row has stoked tensions between Serbia and its former province of Kosovo, which gained independence in 2008 and is home to a Serb minority in the north that is backed by Belgrade.

Kosovo police said in a statement it was aware Serb police officers had abandoned their posts and some have handed over police equipment.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti blamed Belgrade for seeking to destabilise Kosovo by supporting the Serbs in their boycott of state institutions.

"I once again invite all Serb citizens of our country to not abandon institutions, not to resign, not to leave their jobs, because there would be less service for the people," he said.

"At present, the country's oil supply is largely via a pipeline through Croatia, but this is unlikely to be possible in the future because of the sanctions that have been adopted," he added.
