"Market traded range bound with a negative bias due to lack of optimism to the upcoming earnings season. However, some positive development in auto sales numbers, core sector growth, and festival demand will add some light over the consolidation phase," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services Ltd.

The outcome of tomorrow's GST Council meeting is also seen to decide the direction of the market in the short run.

Sensex takes first hit after 4-day winning spell

Indian stocks are set to rise further over the coming year but will lag predictions from three months ago on worries shares have become too pricey and that the economy is headed for a rough patch, a Reuters poll showed.

The BSE Sensex, already up over 18 per cent this year, is forecast to add another 3 per cent by end-2017 to 32,500 from Tuesday's close of 31,497, according to the poll of 50 strategists taken over the past week.

If realised, that would mark its best calendar year performance in percentage terms since 2014. The latest predictions were lower than the 33,000 - which would be a record - forecast in the June poll. The existing record high, struck in August, is 32,686.

While Indian shares have been among the star global performers this year, the domestic economy has been slowing since the middle of 2016. The latest data showed economic growth cooled to a three-year low in the quarter through to June.

That unexpected slowdown, which was reported in August, prompted foreign investors to pull cash out of India and triggered two consecutive down months in the Sensex for the first time since early 2016.

Still, the average price-to-earnings ratio of 23 on the BSE Sensex is at a 17-year high, suggesting stock prices are stretched.

"Valuations are very rich and even the liquidity flow from FIIs (Foreign Institutional Investments) is now drying up," said B.V. Rudramurthy, managing director at Vachana Investments.

About 60 per cent of respondents said the index was overvalued.

The remainders don't think Indian shares are overvalued now, though they expect it will be so if further gains were made as predicted in the latest Reuters poll by end-2018.

"The stock market has been optimistic about an eventual corporate earnings recovery, justifying the valuations. That is the single biggest risk," said Ajay Bagga, executive chairman at OPC Asset Solutions.

The Sensex was forecast to rise to a record high of 34,000 by the middle of next year and then to 35,000 by end-2018.

The biggest risks to those forecasts were the persistent weakness in economic activity and lower-than-expected corporate earnings, according to analysts.

The government's decision late last year to ban high-value currency notes took over 85 percent of cash out of circulation, a demonetisation drive that has hurt consumer spending and businesses.

That, along with a push this year in July to unify various state-level taxes into one national goods and services tax, has disrupted business and cast a shadow over economic activity.

"Economic activity has to pick up for corporate (profit) growth as there is unutilised capacity. But too many harsh reforms have impacted growth at a time when the market is overvalued," said A.K. Prabhakar, head of research at IDBI Capital.

"Still, there is no major avenue to invest post demonetisation. The idle cash which has come into the system is likely to keep markets elevated."

Escalating North Korean worries too continued to dampen trading sentiments.

In addition, the rupee quoting at over six-month low of 65.75 against the dollar in day trade too dented the sentiment further.

Sensex, Nifty close down over North Korea tensions, govt's stimulus plan

The recent North Korea bombing threats and low confidence in the Indian economy have spooked Indian markets today. It was a day of weak trade on the Dalal street as bears took complete control over bulls.

The Nifty closed below its key psychological 10,000-mark and the broader markets cracked 3 percent. Indian markets were tracking global weakness after North Korea threat indicated another hydrogen bomb test and s&p downgraded China's credit rating.

It was across the board sell-off led by metals, realty, banking & financials, and infra stocks but the nifty it outperformed with a marginal loss of 0.2 percent. The 30-share BSE Sensex plunged 447.60 points or 1.38 percent to 31,922.44 and the 50-share NSE nifty lost 157.50 points or 1.56 percent to 9,964.40.

The broader markets fell more than benchmarks today as the BSE midcap and smallcap indices cracked nearly 3 percent each on weak breadth. About four shares declined for every share rising on the BSE. However, the broad five reasons for markets falling are as follows

North Korea concerns

Geopolitical concerns over the Korean peninsula have remained under the spotlight as the trump administration has attempted to put more pressure on North Korea. Adding to the uncertainty is the fresh threat from the rogue nation about nuclear warfare.

China-Economy Downgrade

Asia's growth engine China is faltering and the recent downgrade by s&p has raised doubts on China's economic prowess. Developments around China kept the market on its feet after its rating was downgraded.

Likely stimulus for Indian Economy

Indian markets could have been jittery over the economic prospects after the government announced plans to boost the economy. The Indian government is considering a plan to loosen the fiscal deficit target so that it could spend an additional Rs 50,000 crore ($7.7 billion) in the financial year ending in March 2018, two government sources said on Thursday.

Growth in Asia's third-largest economy India has slowed to a three-year low of 5.7 percent in the quarter that ended in June, and finance minister Arun Jaitley said on Wednesday that the government was looking for ways to speed it up.

Sensex, Nifty snap gains over North Korea tensions

Indian shares fell on Tuesday and were set to snap four consecutive sessions of gains as the firing of a missile over Japan by North Korea rattled investors, while the expiry of local derivatives contracts this week also hit sentiment.

In a sharp escalation of tensions on the Korean peninsula, North Korea fired a missile early on Tuesday that flew over Japan and landed in Pacific waters about 1,180 kilometres (735 miles) off the northern region of Hokkaido.

Asian share markets tumbled, with MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan down 0.6 per cent.

"Investors are also booking profits after Nifty tested 9,900 levels on Monday while there is some volatility ahead of the expiry," he added.

The broader NSE Nifty was down 0.7 per cent at 9,841.50 as of 0637 GMT, while the benchmark BSE Sensex also eased 0.7 per cent at 31,521.05.

Meanwhile, shares in Infosys fell 1 per cent on profit-booking after having risen nearly 8 per cent in the last four sessions.

The stock had gained more than 3 per cent in the previous session, with co-founder Nandan Nilekani returning as chairman after the shock resignation of chief executive Vishal Sikka last week.
