Uma Das Gupta had been battling cancer for a prolonged period and breathed her last at a private hospital in Kolkata.&nbsp;The news of her demise was confirmed by actor and politician Chiranjit Chakraborty, who expressed his condolences and remembered her contributions to Bengali cinema.<br />

Dasgupta only starred in one film and then lived a private life away from the limelight. After her performance in <em>Pather Panchali,</em> she never took up acting again and taught at Kolkata's Jadavpur Vidyapith until she retired in 2000. She is survived by her daughter and son.&nbsp;<br />

Reacting to the news of her death, Sandeep Ray, filmmaker Satyajit Ray's son spoke to Bollywood Hungama and paid his condolences. Sandeep revealed that Dasgupta was selected to play Durga without any audition. “She came to our Lake Avenue house with somebody whom my father knew,” he said. “And my father talked to her for a little while and she was cast. It's as simple as that! No audition, nothing at all. My father treated both Uma and Subir Banerjee (who played Apu) as adults, you know. No chocolates, no, you know, nothing. He never used to do that. He never pampered even his adults, no matter how big a star.”<br />

Sandeep revealed Uma was a natural born before the camera. “The strangest part is that she was not, you know, a professional actress. She was not! She only starred in one film and she was so, you know, so striking with her work. It takes a lot of guts with that kind of adulation to spurn all offers. It must have been very difficult. That height of excellence in her first film would have been impossible to match. I have very faint memories, you know. I was about two years old. And after that, she didn't keep in touch. She became a recluse. She was very shy. She was so good in that film. Oh, my God! We cannot imagine Pather Panchali without her. Without Durga,” he said.</p>

So it’s a tremendous honour to receive this award,” Douglas said.&nbsp;<br />

The veteran actor-filmmaker also stated that he had watched Ray's classics <em>Pather Panchali </em>and <em>Charulata </em>during his days in college.&nbsp;<br />

“When I was in the University of California at Santa Barbara. I was taking a film course in 1963. This is about 1964 and one of the directors that we studied a lot was Satyajit Ray. And if I remember correctly, it was a film called Pather Panchali and another called Charulata… But when I realised that he was not only a director, but he was a writer, a filmmaker, a musician and he authored books. He was quite an extraordinary man, and also the sense of dealing with people. You would not think of being heroic or large scale but showing a reality and a texture that we had known about all left me with an impression,” Douglas said.<br />

Douglas, who is also a producer, said he focussed on the ‘material' when it came to backing a film.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
“Material, for me, became the most important. I don’t care what it is but if it is something that feels emotionally nervously and structured -- for me a three act structure is very important -- that’s what I count on. So if I’m haunted by it, whether it makes me laugh or cry or sexy or not. Then I analyse it and I see the structure. And so I think that’s why I’ve been fairly successful over the years trying to stick with good material,” Douglas said.<br />
<br />
“The material is the most important thing. Many actors can play the parts, (what matters is) how good the material is. So I think that’s always stuck with me,” he added.<br />
<br />
His wife, Catherine Zeta Jones also shared a personal India story. The actress revealed that it was an Indian doctor who had saved her life when she was all of 18 months.&nbsp;</p>

Remembering Soumitra Chatterjee (1935-2020): The man who remained relevant for five long decades

<p>Veteran photographer Nemai Ghosh, who was known to be a close associate of Satyajit Ray, is no more. He was 86. Ghosh breathed his last at Kolkata's SSKM hospital on Wednesday morning after suffering a cardiac arrest, his son Satyaki Ghosh confirmed.<br />

The veteran photographer had been suffering from age-related ailments for the past few years.<br />
<br />
Most known for working as a still photographer on the sets of various Satyajit Ray films, his photos are to date considered as the most intimate photos of the auteur and his world of cinema.&nbsp; Ghosh captured the master craftsman in different moods at sets besides framing actors as they faced the camera for over two decades.</p>

<p>Nemai Ghosh debuted with 'Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne' (1969) and was with Satyajit Ray till his last film 'Agantuk' (1991).<br />
While speaking to a news agency, Satyajit Ray's son, director Sandip Ray said Nemai Ghosh's death is a "personal loss" for him.<br />

A Padma Shri recipient, Nemai Ghosh had also penned books such as 'Manik Da: Memoirs of Satyajit Ray', which are invaluable references for Ray enthusiasts.<br />

Nemai Ghosh debuted with 'Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne' (1969) and was with Satyajit Ray till his last film 'Agantuk' (1991).
