<p>India's Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Wednesday (Dec 27) hailed the "very strong" and "very steady" relationship between New Delhi and Moscow as he met his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov to discuss bilateral cooperation in different spheres, international strategic situation, conflicts and tensions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jaishankar, who is currently on a five-day visit to Russia, said, "Our relations have been very strong, very steady. And I think we have lived up to a special and privileged strategic partnership."&nbsp;</p>

<p>He noted that it was his seventh meeting with Lavrov. He said this year "We have already met six times, and this is our seventh meeting".&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Indian foreign minister said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin have been in frequent contact as he noted that forums like G20, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, ASEAN, and BRICS allowed many more regular contacts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jaishankar said, "We will discuss the international strategic situation, conflicts and tensions, also focus on development challenges that the Global South faces and of course the multilateralism and the building of a multipolar world order."&nbsp;</p>

And on the bilateral economic cooperation, the India, Russia intergovernmental commission, which I had co-chaired with Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov," Jaishankar said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We are very glad to see continued progress and we expect a strong Russian participation at the Vibrant Gujarat meeting in January," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We expect strong Russian participation at the Vibrant Gujarat meeting in January, including lot of governors from the Far-East. So today I think our meeting. <p>"We will discuss the international strategic situation, conflicts and tensions, where they are, also focus on development challenges that the Global South faces. <p>The Russian foreign minister said that Moscow and New Delhi are consistent opponents of neo-colonial practices such as illegal unilateral sanctions, threats, blackmail and other forms of pressure on sovereign states.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lavrov spoke at the opening ceremony of the Tolstoy-Gandhi exhibition in New Delhi a day before attending the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in the Indian national capital.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lavrov said that this year India and Russia will mark two events of significance to both Russia and India, which is the 195th birth anniversary of the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy and the 75th anniversary of the tragic death of Mahatma Gandhi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India is hosting RIC foreign ministerial meeting on Monday.</p>

<p>The three foreign ministers will issue a joint statement as well.</p>

<p>According to a media report, the three foreign ministers are likely to begin their discussions after calling on President Ramnath Kovind.</p>

<p>The discussions will be followed by a working lunch.</p>

<p>The platform of the three major BRICS powers is aimed at facilitating common position on key global challenges - radical ideas, terror threats, Afghanistan and West Asia.</p>

<p>Swaraj will hold a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of RIC with Wang Yi and Sergei Lavrov who will be the first minister from Beijing to visit India after the Doklam episode.</p>

<p>China and India are at odds on issues like NSG membership for India, Masood Azhar&#39;s ban or even India&#39;s participation in One Belt One Road Initiative (OBOR).</p>

<p>Earlier, the RIC meeting had been scheduled for April.&nbsp;</p>
