Russia-Ukraine war | US secretly shipped 'ATACMS' missile to Kyiv: Report

Russia on Wednesday (Apr 24) announced a deal with Ukraine to exchange almost 50 children displaced by Moscow's 'special military invasion' on neighbour Kyiv.

This comes as Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that 16 Ukrainian children who had been "forcibly deported to Russia" were "in Qatar for medical, mental, and social recovery".&nbsp;

"All of them had previously been forcibly deported to Russia, but thanks to our friendly Qatar's mediation efforts, they have been released," said Zelensky. However, he did not address Russian claims about 48 children being exchanged.

In a statement, Kremlin official Maria Lvova-Belova announced that "for the first time in a face-to-face format, we held talks with the Ukrainian side. Twenty-nine children are due to go to Ukraine and 19 to Russia".

Since July of last year, Qatar has enabled the return of dozens of Ukrainian children who were taken to Russia.

Ukraine refuses to confirm Russia claims of exchange of 48 children

Russia and Ukraine have agreed in a Qatari-brokered deal to exchange almost 50 children displaced by Moscow's invasion, the Kremlin's children's rights commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova announced in Doha Wednesday.

Moscow has been accused of forcibly taking Ukrainian children into Russian territory during its full-scale offensive, with Lvova-Belova wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges related to those allegations.

The fate of the children has been highly sensitive in Ukraine since the war began two years ago.

A 240-metre&nbsp;television tower can be seen snapped in half and collapsed on the ground in videos emerging from&nbsp;the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Local authorities believe&nbsp;that the incident was probably the result of a Russian missile strike targeting television infrastructure.

As a result, broadcasting signals to Ukraine's second-largest city were disrupted, adding to the&nbsp;damage caused by ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks in the area.

"At the moment there are interruptions to the digital television signal," regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said.

No casualties occurred because workers were in shelters, he mentioned.

Russia said that it had intercepted 20 drones and two ballistic missiles on Thursday (April 18), in regions adjacent to Ukraine, notably in Rostov, where its command headquarters for the Ukraine offensive is situated.

"During late night hours, several terrorist attacks by the Kyiv regime were foiled," the defence ministry said.

As per the Russian defence ministry, they had neutralised a total of 20 drones, 16 of which were downed. Two Tochka-U missiles and five balloons tried to deflect&nbsp;the attention of air defence systems, it said.

The 16 drones and two missiles were shot down in the Belgorod region which has faced near-daily Ukrainian strikes.

Earlier on Wednesday, a Russian missile attack on the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv killed 17 civilians, while 60 others, including three children were injured.

The strike also damaged four buildings, a hospital, an education facility and dozens of private cars, he added in a statement on Telegram.&nbsp;

Russia said that it had intercepted 20 drones and two ballistic missiles on Thursday (April 18), in regions adjacent to Ukraine, notably in Rostov, where its command headquarters for the Ukraine offensive is situated. "During late night hours, several terrorist attacks by the Kyiv regime were foiled," the defence ministry said. As per the Russian defence ministry, they had neutralised a total of 20 drones, 16 of which were downed. Two Tochka-U missiles and five balloons tried to deflect the attention of air defence systems, it said. The 16 drones and two missiles were shot down in the Belgorod region which has faced near-daily Ukrainian strikes. Earlier on Wednesday, a Russian missile attack on the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv killed 17 civilians, while 60 others, including three children were injured. The strike also damaged four buildings, a hospital, an education facility and dozens of private cars, he added in a statement on Telegram. Ukraine has warned that there will be a "third world war" if it loses the conflict with Russia.&nbsp;

Speaking to BBC on Wednesday (Apr 18) in Washington, Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal voiced the warning while urging the United States Congress to pass a long-stalled foreign aid bill.

<h2>'Careful optimism'</h2>

Shmyhal, as per BBC, expressed "careful optimism" that the US lawmakers would pass the measure that has $61 billion earmarked for Ukraine.

"We need this money yesterday, not tomorrow, not today," said the Ukrainian leader about the much-awaited US assistance.

"Or, there will be many conflicts, many such kinds of wars, and in the end of the day, it could lead to the Third World War," warned Shmyhal.

Earlier, too, Ukraine has voiced similar alarming warnings about the possible consequences its defeat in the battle with Russia will bring. Just last year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned that after Ukraine, Russia would move on to invade Poland, triggering World War III.

A top adviser of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that his nation is crippled by an overwhelming Russian attack on its energy infrastructure, especially power stations. According to Mykhailo Podolyak, Russia has adopted a new strategy of attacking power stations in Ukraine simultaneously with 10-12 missiles, thus rendering the already-stretched air defence ineffective.

“Now we have to see whether we can keep the system running, whether we need more air defence systems, especially against anti-ultrasonic ballistic missiles, and whether we can restore the destroyed facilities,” the adviser said in an interview.

<h2>Russian attacks on power stations</h2>

Earlier on Thursday (April 11), Russia targetted a coal and gas-fired power plant in the south of Kyiv, triggering a fire in the turbine hall. While no staff was killed in the attack, the plant lost its 100 per cent power generation capacity, said its operator Centrenergo.

People living nearby said the plant was hit by multiple missiles before 5 am. Subsequently, a fire broke out that took several hours to be brought under control. According to the company’s chair Andriy Gota, “The scale of destruction is terrifying.”&nbsp;

Ukraine ‘crippled’ by Russia’s new strategy of attacking power stations

China is significantly aiding Russia's military build-up, the largest since the Soviet era. According to a US assessment report, China has increased sales of technology crucial for weapon production, including machine tools and microelectronics, which Russia is using to build missiles, tanks, and aircraft for its war against Ukraine.

US officials are hopeful that sharing the intelligence will motivate European allies to apply pressure on China. This comes as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz prepares to visit Beijing over the weekend and G7 foreign ministers convene in Italy next week.

According to US findings, China helped Russia in the production of drones, space-based capabilities and machine-tool exports vital for producing ballistic missiles.

China has become a lifeline for Russia's struggling defence industry, particularly after setbacks since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a senior US official told reporters on condition of anonymity.

“Russia is launching its biggest military expansion since the Cold War, happening even faster than we initially anticipated,” said the US official.

“We believe the most critical step to aid Ukraine right now is convincing China to stop assisting Russia in rebuilding its military production capacity,” he further added, “Russia's war effort heavily relies on Chinese support, and without it, they'd struggle to continue.”
