Russia’s new Oreshnik missile is being touted as a potential game-changer in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

Russia-Ukraine War | Putin's Oreshnik Missile: A Game-changing Threat For Ukraine?

French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Warsaw on Thursday to discuss boosting support for Ukraine, against the backdrop of the possibility of peace talks to end Russia's war.

Poland has been a staunch backer of neighbouring Ukraine since Russia's invasion in February 2022 and serves as a crucial logistics hub for Western military aid to Kyiv.

The EU and NATO member has been discussing Ukraine with various foreign officials as it gears up to take over the rotating presidency of the European Union next month.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Tuesday that peace talks on ending the Ukraine war could begin "in the winter of this year".

"Our (EU) presidency will notably be co-responsible for what the political landscape will look like, perhaps how the situation will look during (peace) negotiations," he said.

Macron's office said he and Tusk would talk about "European support to Ukraine in a new trans-Atlantic context" ahead of Poland's EU presidency.

<h2>- Security guarantees -</h2>

US President-elect Donald Trump has said solving the Ukraine crisis would be his top priority once he assumes office next month.

Last Saturday, he met with Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a visit to France, his first international trip since his re-election.

Trump later wrote on his Truth Social platform that "there should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin".&nbsp;

On Tuesday, Zelensky said he was grateful for Trump's "strong resolve" to end the war in Ukraine.

He had earlier said that Ukraine needs "effective guarantees for peace" and has pushed for NATO membership.

"A ceasefire without guarantees can be reignited at any moment, as (Russian President Vladimir) Putin has already done before," he said.&nbsp;

<h2>- Western troops in Ukraine? -</h2>

Several media outlets have reported that Macron and Tusk could also discuss sending a European peacekeeping mission to Ukraine.

Paris has not confirmed the reports.

A diplomatic source said on condition of anonymity that "they will talk about security guarantees and what comes after, namely what tomorrow may look like, on the conditions that the Ukrainians will have set".&nbsp;

Defence expert Elie Tenenbaum told AFP that "France and Britain on the one hand, and then the Poles, the Baltics, the Scandinavian countries... and maybe other allies" could participate in such a plan.

Tenenbaum, an expert at the French Institute for International Relations (IFRI), estimated the potential number of troops at 40,000 soldiers.

Macron had already floated the idea of Western troops in Ukraine in February.

"Frankly, we can think and work on Emmanuel (Macron)'s position," Zelensky said in Kyiv on Monday.

"He proposed that some troops of some state should be present on the territory of Ukraine to guarantee our security while Ukraine is not in NATO," he added.

Birthday boy Jasprit Bumrah became the first bowler this year and the third Indian seamer overall to complete 50 or more Test wickets in a calendar year. Bumrah unlocked this feat against Australia during day one of the second BGT Test (Day/Night Test) at the Adelaide Oval by picking their opener, Usman Khawaja, caught in the slips on 13. Meanwhile, Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan are the other two Indians who achieved this.

While Kapil did it twice (75 wickets in 1983 and 74 wickets in 1979), Zaheer bagged this milestone once (51 wickets in 2002). However, late Australian great Shane Warne topped the chart with 95 wickets in 2005.&nbsp;

Bumrah featured in 11 Tests in 2024, missing just one, and despite India playing plenty of games at home this year, Bumrah pips the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, marking a stunning 2024 for him, where he even won the T20 World Cup in the Americas.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, in the ongoing Test, Bumrah shared the new ball with Mohammed Siraj in the second innings, and unlike how it unfolded twice in the previous game, India failed to pick any wicket up front. But soon after, he provided India with the breakthrough; coming over the wicket to the left-handed Khawaja, Bumrah found a neat edge that went straight to the first slip as the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma grabbed it comfortably.

After electing to bowl first in this Pink-Ball Test, India got all out on 180, with Aussie quick Mitchell Starc returning with his best Test figures of 6/48. For the visitors, all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy top-scored with 42.&nbsp;

<h2>Bumrah back to his best</h2>

Bumrah captained India in the first BGT Test at the Optus Stadium in Perth, picking eight for 72 across two innings, including a five-for in the first. Though he remained the ultimate thorn in the flesh for the Aussies, breaking their back in the series opener with early strikes, Bumrah impressed everyone with his leadership skills, helping India win the Test and draw first blood in the five-match marquee series.

With Rohit returning to the playing XI for the second Test, he took over the captaincy hat while Bumrah remains the leader of the pace attack.&nbsp;

Top 10 world news: Russia-Ukraine war updates; UN meeting on Syria tomorrow, and more

Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited Ukraine on Monday to reaffirm German support for Kyiv after becoming the first major ally of the war-torn country to speak to Vladimir Putin in years to urge negotiations.

His surprise visit comes as Ukrainian forces are buckling across the eastern front amid fears about future US support once Donald Trump returns to the White House in January.

Russia launched another aerial barrage of hundreds of drones hours before Scholz arrived, leaving one dead and three wounded in the western Ukrainian city of Ternopil.

Scholz said he would meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky and announce another package of military support worth 650 million euros ($680 million) to be delivered by the end of the year.

"I would like to make it clear here on the ground that&nbsp;Germany&nbsp;will remain Ukraine's strongest supporter in Europe," said Scholz, who faces new elections in February after his coalition collapsed last month.

"Ukraine can rely on&nbsp;Germany&nbsp;-- we say what we do. And we do what we say," he added in a post on social media.

Scholz in mid-November spurred controversy and concern in Ukraine by becoming the first Western leader in years to speak by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

<h2>Low Kremlin expectations for visit</h2>

Zelensky at the time slammed the call, saying it had opened a "Pandora's Box" by weakening Putin's international isolation.

In the call, Scholz condemned the war and "urged Russia to show willingness to negotiate with Ukraine with the aim of achieving a just and lasting peace", the chancellor's office said.

The Kremlin said Monday that it had no expectations from Scholz's visit.

"I would not say we have expectations from this visit.&nbsp;Germany&nbsp;is continuing its line of unconditional support to Ukraine," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, adding that Putin had not passed on a message to Zelensky through Scholz.

Ukraine faces a tough winter, with Russia unleashing drone and missile attacks against its power grid.

The air force said Russia had attacked overnight with 110 drones, including the Iranian-designed Shahed unmanned aerial vehicle from four regions of Russia.

The bombardment killed a 45-year-old man in Ternopil, a town of around 224,000 people, where strikes last month left thousands without electricity, authorities said.

"Unpunished evil never stops. And it will not limit itself by our borders," Zelensky's chief of staff Andriy Yermak wrote on social media in response to the attack.

Scholz's visit comes ahead of the January 20 inauguration of Trump, who has pledged to speedily end the war, raising fears he will try to force Ukraine to accept a deal on Moscow's terms.

<h2>'Russian roulette'</h2>

Separately, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Monday warned her Chinese counterpart that Beijing's support for Moscow would impact ties and instead urged China to help end the Ukraine conflict.

Zelensky said Sunday that his country needed security guarantees from NATO and more weapons to defend itself before any talks with Russia.

He made the comments after meeting the EU's new head of diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, and EU Council chief Antonio Costa, who were visiting Kyiv as a show of support on their first day in office.

Under Scholz,&nbsp;Germany&nbsp;has become the second-biggest arms supplier to Ukraine after the United States, but has refused to send Kyiv long-range missiles that could strike deep inside Russia.

Berlin has stuck to that approach even after US President Joe Biden gave the green light for Ukraine to fire long-range ATACMS missiles into Russia for the first time.

In a campaign speech in Berlin on Saturday, Scholz criticised political rivals pushing for&nbsp;Germany's Taurus long-range missile system to be delivered to Ukraine.

Speaking to his Social Democratic Party, Scholz said that confronting Moscow, a nuclear power, with such a threat would amount to playing "Russian roulette" with&nbsp;Germany's security.
