Rory McIlroy may be one of golf's biggest draws but he is doing the right thing by taking some time away from the game following his stunning collapse at the U.S. Open, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said on Wednesday.

McIlroy threw away a chance to end a decade-long search for his fifth major with three bogeys in his final four holes at the U.S. Open and a day later said he needed time away to process everything that had happened.

Monahan, speaking to reporters at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut ahead of this week's Travelers Championship - a PGA Tour Signature Event featuring a loaded and limited field - said he has texted with McIlroy since Sunday's wild finish to the U.S. Open and respects his decision.

"Sometimes you just need to focus on what you need," said Monahan. "And that's what he's doing and that's exactly what he should be doing because that's what he thinks is the right path."

McIlroy began the day three shots back of 54-hole leader Bryson DeChambeau but put himself in prime position and had a two-shot lead with five holes to play, a stretch where he made three bogeys, including two where he missed putts from inside of four feet.

The Northern Irishman left the site of the U.S. Open without speaking to media but a day later announced his decision to take a break from golf and get himself ready for his title defense at the July 11-14 Scottish Open.

Despite the absence of world number two McIlroy this week, Monahan is excited at the players in Cromwell and expects an exciting week given a field that includes a slew of big names, including Masters champion Scottie Scheffler.

"We're at a Signature Event, you look at the quality of the field that we have this week, we're going to have a great Travelers Championship and looking forward to getting Rory back in Scotland," said Monahan.

The golfer also spoke about his campaign and conceded that he'll rue a few things.

"As I reflect on my week, I’ll rue a few things over the course of the tournament, mostly the 2 missed putts on 16 and 18 and on the final day. But, as I always try to do, I’ll look at the positives of the week that far outweigh the negatives.

"As I said at the start of the tournament, I feel closer to winning my next major championship than I ever have. The one word that I would describe my career as is resilient. I’ve shown my resilience over and over again in the last 17 years and I will again," he added.

McIlroy is now expected to feature at Scottish Open from July 11-14 before featuring at final major of the year - British Open from July 17-21.

He has previously won the British Open in 2014. His other major victories are 2011 US Open and PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014.

Overtaken by McIlroy with six holes remaining to play, DeChambeau kept his poise over the dome-shaped greens and sandy waste areas of Pinehurst to rally for the crown.

McIlroy, thwarted in a bid to end a 10-year major win drought, led by two strokes with five holes to play.

But the four-time major winner from Northern Ireland made bogeys on three of the last four holes -- two on short par putts at 16 and 18 -- to help hand DeChambeau the trophy.

"I still can't believe it," said DeChambeau. "It's unbelievable."

DeChambeau, who also won the 2020 US Open, fired a one-over-par 71 to finish on six-under-par 274 while McIlroy shot 69 to stand on 275 after 72 holes.

In addition to taking the $4.3 million winner's prize from a record $21.5 million purse, DeChambeau will jump from 38th to 10th in the next world rankings and have five more years of starts in all majors.

In a collapse mindful of Greg Norman's epic 1996 last-round loss to Nick Faldo at the Masters, McIlroy missed par putts from 2.5 feet at the par-4 16th and just inside four feet at the par-4 18th -- tension-packed bogeys that left McIlroy one behind in the thriller.

"Being able to fight against a great like that is pretty special," DeChambeau said of McIlroy, who left the course without speaking to media after his agonising collapse.

"For him to miss that putt (at 18), I'd never wish it on anybody. It just happened to play out that way," DeChambeau added.

DeChambeau found dirt and weeds left and a bunker at 18 but blasted his third shot to four feet and sank his pressure-packed putt for the victory.

"I was not great today but I got out of trouble really well and then, man, I can't believe that up and down the last -- that was All-World, probably the best shot of my life."

Raising his arms in triumph, DeChambeau screamed and jumped for joy, then paid tribute to the late Payne Stewart, the 1999 US Open winner at Pinehurst who died only a few months later.

"That's Payne right there, baby," DeChambeau said into a television camera, pointing to a pin of Stewart on his cap.

The 30-year-old American became the second active player of Saudi-backed LIV Golf to win a major title after Brooks Koepka in the 2023 PGA Championship.

It was the sixth consecutive win by an American in a major since Spain's Jon Rahm took last year's Masters.

Americans Tony Finau and Patrick Cantlay shared third on 276, two off the pace, with Finau firing a 67. France's Matthieu Pavon was fifth on 277 after a 71, one stroke ahead of Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, who fired a 70 to stand on 278.

DeChambeau answered bogeys at the fourth and 12th holes with birdies at the par-5 10th and par-4 13th to keep the pressure on McIlroy until he cracked.

"I felt like I was hitting the driver pretty well. It just wasn't starting exactly where I wanted to hit to," DeChambeau said. "Ultimately on 13 I knew I had to make birdie there to give myself a chance, because Rory was going on a heater.

"He slipped up a couple on the way coming in and I just kept staying the course, focused on trying to do as many fairways as I could."

McIlroy filed divorce papers to end the seven-year marriage last month, on the eve of the PGA Championship.

"There have been rumours about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumour is a fool's game," the world number three told the newspaper.

"Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning," he added.

Erica Stoll was working for the PGA of America when she met McIlroy in 2012 at the Ryder Cup.

They began dating in 2015, becoming engaged in December that year while on holiday in Paris and marrying in April 2017 at an Irish castle.

Their daughter, Poppy, was born in 2020.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy return next week to Valhalla for the 106th PGA Championship, back on a course where each captured a dramatic major victory earlier in their careers.

Woods, a 15-time major champion, won a three-hole playoff over Bob May to take the 2000 PGA Championship, becoming the first golfer since Ben Hogan in 1953 to win three majors in the same year.

He went on to claim the 2001 Masters and complete the Tiger Slam feat of four consecutive major wins.

World number two McIlroy won the most recent of his four major titles in the 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla, racing the darkness down the last hole to edge Phil Mickelson by a stroke.

"I think the guys up ahead were pretty unhappy with how it all unfolded," McIlroy recalled. "I got the result that I was looking for in the end and that's all that matters."

McIlroy stubbornly finished as nightfall descended after Mickelson, a group ahead, birdied to pull within one. McIlroy found a greenside bunker and saved par for the victory.

"I'm not a huge fan of conflict, but when push comes to shove, I will," McIlroy recalled. "That was one of those times when I needed to sort of assert my will on a situation.

"I think if I wasn't as pushy as I was, I would have had to sleep on that lead and on that tee shot overnight. I just didn't want to do that."

McIlroy has not won a major title in the decade since, but has posted 20 top-10 major finishes, including a runner-up showing at each of the other three majors.

The 35-year-old from Northern Ireland has stretched his PGA Tour win total from nine to 25 and his DP World Tour total from nine to 17.

Woods, 48, has won 10 majors since but with a gap from the 2008 US Open, won on a broken leg in a playoff over Rocco Mediate at Torrey Pines, to a one-stroke triumph at the 2019 Masters.

Woods has struggled to simply walk 72 holes after suffering severe leg injuries in a 2021 car crash but finished 60th at last month's Masters and said he knew how he would work toward Valhalla.

"Well, just keep lifting, keep the motor going, keep the body moving, keep getting stronger, keep progressing," Woods said. "Hopefully the practice sessions will keep getting longer.

"I'm going to do my homework going forward... that's kind of the game plan."

While issues remain, Monahan said during his press conference on Tuesday that talks with the PIF were accelerating as were reports a deal could be done before next month's Masters.

Not everyone is in agreement. Xander Schauffele said that the commissioner still has a long way to go to regain the trust of the membership while Viktor Hovland wants a leader who will take ownership.

"But you just want to get them to spend it the right way and spend it on things that are important in the game. "Instead of giving someone $100m why don't you put $50m into grassroots programmes for the R&amp;A or USPGA. Spending that money to actually grow the game and not just buy talent would be a way better way."

"There are only so many hours in the day, and there are only so many days in the week, and I've got a lot going on in my life right now," McIlroy said.&nbsp;

"I am trying to be a world-class golfer, trying to be a good husband and a good father. I've got a growing investment portfolio that's taken up more of my time, I'm involved with the TGL. I've got a lot of stuff going on," said the world number two.

"With the policy board stuff, obviously, it's taken more of my time than ever this year. I just feel like there are people that are there that are able to spend more time and put more energy into it than I am right now. And it's better if someone else takes that spot of mine."

A decision on PGA Tour's Framework of Agreement with the Saudi Public Investment Fund is due before December 31, but McIlroy did not think it was a bad time for him to leave.

"I think the process is in good hands," he said.&nbsp;

"The PGA Tour agreed to let a sixth player on the policy board, so the players are the ones that are going to control the future anyway. So, I sort of felt comfortable enough to step down, because there are guys on that board that are able to dedicate the time and the energy into it."&nbsp;

"I stepped up and spoke out about something I believed in and obviously, the landscape changed in June with that announcement. It was never in my control, but I was playing a lesser part from there on because of the decisions that were made."

Sunday's 12 singles matches were already going to be spicy affairs as the USA need a record-breaking comeback from 10.5-5.5 down to win the trophy for the first time on European soil in 30 years.

And there could well be added needle between the two teams following the explosive aftermath of a dramatic and tension-packed win for Cantlay and Wyndham Clark sealed on the 18th green of the Marco Simone course in Rome, the third for the US in the four afternoon fourballs.

Cantlay and Clark prevailed in the day's final fourballs match against McIlroy and Matthew Fitzpatrick, sparking wild celebrations from the US team and fans.

However McIlroy was enraged by the behaviour of Cantlay's caddie Joe LaCava, who was waving his hat and refused to move out of the four-time major winner's way while he was waiting to take a putt which could have halved the hole and match for Europe.

Northern Irishman McIlroy was then filmed having another blazing row with an unidentified member of the USA team in the course carpark, having to be pulled away and bundled into a car by teammate Shane Lowry.

Europe captain Luke Donald told reporters that McIlroy thought "the line was crossed" with LaCava's behaviour, causing a row which dominated headlines following an epic session which ended at nearly 7:00pm local time (1700 GMT).

It was a dramatic third win from four afternoon fourballs for the USA and earned largely thanks to Cantlay, who sunk three crucial putts in the final three holes just as momentum appeared to have definitively swung in the Europeans' favour.

The USA still have a massive task on their hands as no team has ever recovered from more than a four-point deficit at the end of the second day.&nbsp;

Rose had sunk the key 19-foot putt to halve his Friday fourballs match in stunning fashion and on Saturday the English Ryder Cup veteran repeated the trick on the 16th.

"I just knew there was a huge opportunity today," said Rose.&nbsp;

"Obviously nine and 10, we went one up and... I said to Bobby, the next 20 minutes, we have to put our foot down and get out and get a stranglehold on this match. That's exactly what happened."

By that time the USA had already collected two of their afternoon points with convincing wins.

Sam Burns and Collin Morikawa cruised to a 4 and 3 victory over Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg, who ran out of gas after dishing out a record-breaking 9 and 7 foursomes hammering to Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka.

Max Homa and Brian Harman were the only bright spot in the morning foursomes for Johnson's team.&nbsp;

The pair followed that up by prevailing 2 and 1 over Tommy Fleetwood and Nicolai Hojgaard, and Harma has no illusions about their chances on Sunday.

"Backs against the wall. We've got a deep hole to climb out of," admitted Harman.&nbsp;

"But we've got some good players and got a good team. So we're going to fight like hell and either win or die trying."

Sunday's 12 singles matches were already going to be spicy affairs as the USA need a record-breaking comeback from 10.5-5.5 down to win the trophy for the first time on European soil in 30 years. And there could well be added needle between the two teams following the explosive aftermath of a dramatic and tension-packed win for Cantlay and Wyndham Clark sealed on the 18th green of the Marco Simone course in Rome, the third for the US in the four afternoon fourballs. Golf: Ryder Cup set for spicy climax after Rory McIlroy's spat amid Team USA surge

Europe led the USA 6.5-1.5 at the Ryder Cup in Rome after saving three fourballs matches late on Friday to deny an American fightback.

Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick were the only European pair to win, 5 and 3 against Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele.

But three matches halved on the final hole ensured Luke Donald's men extended their lead to five points after the morning's foursomes 4-0 whitewash.

Europe's sole win came thanks to the red-hot putter of Fitzpatrick, who shot four birdies and an eagle on the front nine of the Marco Simone course in the Italian capital.

"One of the greatest days on golf course, it's very special," said Fitzpatrick. "Just so excited to be out here and to get off to the start we did, could not be happier."

It was a superb end to a positive day for Europe, who steamrollered the Americans in the first session and snatched halves from matches which looked destined to go to Zach Johnson's USA until the final shot.

Joh Rahm ensured that he and Nicolai Hojgaard shared the spoils with world number one Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka with an incredible chip on the 16th and wonderful eagle put&nbsp;two holes later which brought a huge roar from the massed ranks of fans.

Koepka is the only golfer from the Saudi Arabia-backed, breakaway LIV Golf tour to play at this week's event.

And Viktor Hovland pulled off a similar piece of late daring with a birdie put which meant he and Tyrrell Hatton shared their match with formidable matchplay pairing Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth.

Thomas and Spieth had claimed four points from six matches as a pairing at the two previous Ryder Cups, and won all four of their matches together at the Presidents Cup last year.

Hovland ended in fabulous fashion a day which began with a sensational chip-in on the first hole of his four-and-three foursomes win against Max Homa and Brian Harman in the morning.

"It was about time the ball went in. I felt like we played some really good golf today. To make a put like that on the last was great for the team," said Hovland.

And shortly afterwards Max Homa missed a birdie putt at 18 to allow Justin Rose to hole his short-range effort and cap a glorious day in warm autumn sunshine.

Europe are aiming to regain the trophy after suffering a record-breaking 19-9 thrashing by the Americans at Whistling Straits two years ago.

Golf: Late drama ensures Europe extend Ryder Cup lead to five

Rory McIlroy says he is at the front of the Ludvig Aberg "bandwagon" as the rising star prepares to make his Ryder Cup debut later this month.

Aberg was hailed as a generational talent by Europe captain Luke Donald after he gave the 23-year-old Swede one of his six wild cards for the upcoming contest against the United States.

The former world number one amateur only turned professional in June but won the final qualifying event in Switzerland and will make the quickest transition from the amateur ranks to the Ryder Cup in the contest's history.

Four-time major winner McIlroy, in the field for this week's BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, said he had played alongside Aberg in practice at the Ryder Cup venue, near Rome, this week.

World number two McIlroy teamed up with Tommy Fleetwood, losing to Aberg and Viktor Hovland.

"I had an opportunity to play with Ludvig for the first time on Monday, which I was excited about," he said. "I told him I've been looking forward to this for a while."

Asked if Aberg had lived up to his expectations, Mcllroy added: "Probably exceeded them. Everyone talks about what a great driver of the golf ball he is, which he is.

"The ball-striking is incredible. But I was really impressed with his wedge play and how he can sort of control his trajectory with shorter clubs. I was on the bandwagon before and I'm certainly at the front of it now."

McIlroy partnered Shane Lowry and Ian Poulter, twice, in the last Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in 2021, but lost all three matches.

He beat Xander Schauffele in the opening singles on the final day but Europe crashed to a humiliating 19-9 defeat.

The 34-year-old, who was left out of a session for the first time since making his debut in 2010, talked of the pain of the defeat.

"We're not used to playing for other people in this game, and you go out there and you're playing for your team-mates, you want to do well for them," he said.

"I felt like I didn't do that and I felt like I didn't give a good account of myself and that stung and the scoreline stung."

The Ryder Cup takes place at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club from September 29 to October 1.

And then there is the former world No1 Jon Rahm, who is trying to make it a Spanish double, following his compatriot Carlos Alcaraz’s thrilling Wimbledon win over Novak Djokovic on Sunday.

You can also add the only Indian player in the field, Shubhankar Sharma, to that list. He turns 27 on Friday and will be hoping for his double celebration on Sunday.

Last year, it was Smith’s unbelievable putting display that helped him edge Mcllroy and Cam Young on the final day. At Royal Liverpool, the title will probably be decided by who is the best off the tee and Mcllroy has an edge there.

He has shown time and again that his short-game magic is still intact, but it is the driver that has been giving him issues.

Scottie Scheffler is having a most incredible stretch, in which he has never finished outside the top 12 in 18 starts this PGA Tour season, apart from winning twice. That’s almost Tiger Woods-like dominance. The difference that links courses make would be a challenge, but the Texan showed he is warming up to them with a tied third place last week in Scotland.

The resurgent Rickie Fowler and the consistent Viktor Hovland would be two players with the form and ability to upstage the favourites.

The thing is, everyone wants to hear from McIlroy. Not only is he the leading player from the region, but he also happens to be the ‘defending’ Open champion at Hoylake, having won the last of his fourth major title when the tournament was last played here in 2014.

The treatment of the media, most of whom were not at Renaissance Club in Scotland last week, seems unfair and disrupts the plans of many who have travelled thousands of miles. Of course, he is ranked one spot below the understated Scottie Scheffler in the world order, but there is no doubt that McIlroy is the unquestioned superstar of professional golf. When he says something, people listen.

From McIlroy’s perspective, he wants to focus completely on the job at hand. Ever since the Masters this year, he has been trying to avoid direct interactions, knowing there would be questions about the state of the game, and he’d have to comment on the continuing intrigue of the PGA Tour’s sudden volte-face on Saudi Arabia and their deal with the Public Investment Fund (PIF).

At a senate hearing earlier this week, a proposal was revealed for both Tiger Woods and&nbsp;McIlroy, two of the sport's biggest names, to own LIV Golf teams and participate in at least 10 events on the rival Saudi-backed circuit.

But&nbsp;McIlroy, who said he did not watch the hearing, said he would have rebuffed any such proposal. "If LIV Golf was the last place to play golf on earth I would retire. That's how I feel about it,"&nbsp;McIlroy&nbsp;said after he carded an opening round of 64 at the Scottish Open on Thursday.

"There's quite a bit of apathy towards everything at the moment. There wasn't a lot of new information there for me (in the hearing), there maybe was for other people." The PGA Tour, European Tour and Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit announced a landmark agreement last month to merge and form a commercial entity to unify golf.

At the hearing, the framework agreement with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund was described as an attempt by its government to "buy influence" in U.S. sports.

Rory McIlroy knew it before it happened. He was just outside the scoring tent after recording an even-par 70 in the final round of the US&nbsp;Open when he heard the cheers from nearby 18th green. Those cheers were from Wyndham Clark who had just won his first major title. Rory McIlroy was beaten, by one stroke, again.

"I didn't even need to wait for the tap-in," McIlroy said of Clark's final putt on 18. "It's just fine, fine margins at this level and at this tournament specifically, but I fought to the very end."

McIlroy remembered his last major performance and rued a couple of shots which didn't go his way in the final round on both occasions.

"The last real two chances I've had at majors, I feel like have been pretty similar performances," McIlroy said. "I played the way I wanted to play. There were just a couple of shots, two or three shots over the course of the round, that I'd like to have back."

At the Los Angeles Country Club (LACC), Rory didn't make many mistakes as he shot an even-par round. The golfer, however, didn't take advantage of the opportunities available either, much like his loss at St. Andrews. He missed a 16-foot birdie putt on the third hole and that eventually summed up his day at LACC.&nbsp;

Further in the round, McIlroy missed birdie putts of 7 feet, 14, feet, 15 feet and 18 feet between eight to 12th hole. The major, in the end, was decided by fine margins.

"I don't think I was hitting bad putts; just hitting them just with slightly the wrong speed," McIlroy said. "Some were coming up short, some were going a little long," said McIlroy.

Reflecting upon his loss, McIlroy admitted that he was hoping for a three-putt by Clark, but the winner was solid all day.

"You don't want to wish bad on anyone, but you're really hoping for a three-putt," McIlroy admitted. "Wyndham was pretty much rock solid all day."

"I'm getting closer," McIlroy added. "The more I keep putting myself in these positions, sooner or later it's going to happen for me."

The golfer, however, remains confident of winning another major, which would be his first in nine years, and is ready to go through another '100 Sundays like this' for it.

"I would go through 100 Sundays like this to get my hands on another major championship," McIlroy said. "When I do finally win this next major, it's going to be really, really sweet."

Rickie Fowler and Wyndham Clark shared a one-shot lead over four-time major winner Rory McIlroy on Saturday after a two-shot swing at 18 left them tied atop the leaderboard at the US Open.

Overnight leader Fowler led playing partner Clark by two as they stood on the 18th tee at Los Angeles Country Club.

Clark had just dropped a shot at the 17th, but fired his approach at the flag at 18 and made a six-foot birdie putt.

Fowler, who had gone 12 holes without a bogey as a string of rivals faltered on the treacherous back nine, saw his 42-foot birdie putt skim the edge -- but his par putt from inside four feet coming back lipped out.

"You could see from the first putt, there's a lot of slope there," Fowler said. "I'm not sure why it didn't move. It should have. I hit a good putt, so really can't go back on it.

"It would be nice for that one to go in. Really doesn't matter, having the lead, being one back, two back. You're going to have to play good golf tomorrow."

Fowler signed for an even par 70 while Clark posted a one-under 69 that left them one in front of Northern Ireland star McIlroy, who carded a 69 for 201 to remain in position to claim a fifth career major and his first since 2014.

World number one Scottie Scheffler was alone in fourth on 203.

After two days of record scoring, the sun-baked LA Country Club North Course -- hosting the championship for the first time -- proved plenty capable of providing a classic US Open test of patience and nerve.

Fowler, who had a stunning 18 birdies over the first two rounds, couldn't match those fireworks, his three birdies including a 36-foot putt at the seventh and a 70-footer from off the green at 13.

Clark, a long-hitter who broke through for his first US PGA Tour title at Quail Hollow last month, had grabbed a one-shot edge through nine holes before back-to-back bogeys at the 11th and 12th.

Unable to get up and down from a greenside bunker at the par-three 11th, Clark then botched his first attempt to chip out of greenside rough at the 12th.

He rebounded with a birdie at 13, but it looked as if he'd be chasing on Sunday after his second shot at 17 found the barranca right of the green and he took a penalty drop on the way to bogey.

Limiting the damage was "huge," Clark said, as was the birdie at 18.

"I wanted to be in the final group," Clark said. "I'm not a huge scoreboard watcher, but walking up there I kind of knew where we were at. I really wanted to be in that final group."

<h2>McIlroy 'stress free'</h2>

McIlroy had three birdies and two bogeys and was rarely in real trouble.

"The golf course definitely got a little bit trickier today than the first couple of days," McIlroy said. "Felt like I played really smart, solid golf.

"Hit a lot of fairways, hit a lot of greens. Sort of felt somewhat stress-free out there, if you can ever call golf at a US Open stress-free."

Scheffler, the 2022 Masters champion who started the day five adrift, picked up three strokes in the last two holes.

Coming off his fourth bogey of the day at the 16th, Scheffler holed out from 196 yards in the fairway for eagle at the 17th, where there were only four birdies all day.

He then drilled a 22-foot birdie putt at the last.

"Today it seemed like every time I got off line I was really fighting for par -- just fortunate to see that shot go in on 17 and then a nice birdie on 18 to kind of get myself back into it," Scheffler said.

Scheffler was one stroke in front of fellow American Harris English, who was one off the lead after his fourth birdie of the day at the 10th but had four bogeys the rest of the way in a one-over 71.

Two-time major winner Dustin Johnson and 2021 Olympic champion Xander Schauffele shared sixth on five-under 205, one shot in front of Japanese qualifier Ryutaro Nagano, who had an eagle in his 68.

It was a further stroke back to reigning British Open champion Cameron Smith of Australia, former US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau and South Korean Tom Kim on 207.

Kim fired seven birdies in the first 10 holes to reach six-under for the tournament.

His front-nine 29 tied the US Open nine-hole scoring mark, but he had three bogeys coming in on the way to a four-under par 66.

Golf: Fowler, Clark lead McIlroy by one after US Open third round

World number three Rory McIlroy and newly crowned PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka will make for a spicy pairing in the first two rounds of the 123rd US Open at Los Angeles Country Club.

The two will tee off on the par-70 North Course alongside 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama at 1:54pm (2054 GMT) on Thursday, when the US Open returns to Los Angeles for the first time since it was held at Riviera Country Club in 1948.

Koepka passed McIlroy's total of four major titles when he won his fifth at the PGA Championship at Oak Hill last month.

McIlroy hasn't lifted a major trophy since he won the PGA Championship and Open Championship in 2014 -- a drought that drew a dig from Koepka back in 2019 when the American noted that McIlroy hadn't won a major "since I've been on the PGA Tour."

Golf: Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka paired together for US Open

Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy birdied two of the last four holes to grab a share of the lead after Saturday's third round of the US PGA Tour Memorial Tournament.

World number three McIlroy, who won at Dubai in January but hasn't taken a US PGA title this year, fired a two-under par 70 to stand on six-under 210 after 54 holes at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.

David Lipsky, an American chasing his first PGA title, closed with back-to-back bogeys and fell into sharing the lead with McIlroy and South Korean Kim Si-woo, who shot 71.

One stroke back on 211 were Norway's Viktor Hovland and Americans Wyndham Clark, Mark Hubbard, Lee Hodges and Denny McCarthy.

McIlroy, a 23-time PGA winner, had struggled after missing the cut at the Masters and sharing 47th at Quail Hollow,&nbsp;where he's a three-time champion.

But he shared seventh at the PGA Championship two weeks ago at Oak Hill despite feeling uncomfortable over the ball and has found better form with the US Open two weeks away.

"I'm feeling more comfortable than I felt at Oak Hill," McIlroy said. "I wouldn't say I'm 100%. But I'm battling and I'm hanging in there and the course is playing really tough."

"It feels better. I did a lot of real good work last week. I feel like I'm not fighting the club face as much as I have been so I'm able to release it a little bit more and have a little more trust in it."

"And with how tough it's playing this week, you need to trust it."

McIlroy blasted out of a greenside bunker and sank a 10-foot birdie putt at the par-5 fourth, but made bogey at 10 after missing the fairway and taking four to find the green.

He answered with a birdie putt from just outside 25 feet at the par-3 12th then sank a six-foot birdie putt at the par-5 15th and answered a bogey at 16 with a seven-foot birdie putt at 17.

At 18, McIlroy knocked a 70-foot birdie putt almost nine feet past the hole but sank the comeback putt for par and pumped his right fist after booking his place in Sunday's final pairing with Kim and avoiding his first three-putt of the week.

"This course is still very playable from the fairways. I've done a good job of keeping the ball in play, hitting a lot of 3-woods, a lot of irons off tees," McIlroy said.

"What I need to do tomorrow is just stick to that game plan, not try to get ahead of myself, not get too aggressive. If I stick to the game plan I've had for the last three days, I'll be in with a great chance."

<h2>Kim feels 'great'</h2>

World number 38 Kim, who won his fourth PGA title in January at the Sony Open in Hawaii, made his second double bogey of the day at the par-5 11th then answered with birdies at 12, 13 and 15 to own a share of the lead.

"I feel great," said Kim, the 2017 Players Championship winner. "Making two doubles and shoot under par on this course, I'll take it."

Lipsky, ranked 160th, led much of the day and wasn't unhappy despite his poor finish.

"To find myself at the top of the leaderboard, I couldn't be happier," he said. "My short game has always been pretty good. I was able to lean on that today. I was able to hole a few nice par putts as well. Overall pretty happy."

Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion and 2014 Memorial winner, made three straight bogeys starting at eight and a triple-bogey at the par-3 12th on the way to a 75 to stand on 212.

American Justin Suh, the 36-hole leader, fired a 77 to finish on 213.

Reigning Masters champion Jon Rahm, the world number two from Spain, shot 74 to stand on 214. Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler was on 215 after a 68.

"If someone can keep their discipline and not start firing at those pins and know that middles of the greens is a pretty good leave on most holes, I think that's (key)."

Oak Hill offers tricky pin locations with thick rough and shifting tee box areas to make every challenge unique.

"Discipline is a really good way to describe what one needs this week," Rahm said. "It's challenging, but it's one of those where if you hit the shots you're supposed to hit -- put it in the fairway, go to the center of the green -- nothing crazy should be happening.

"If you can get those up-and-downs, it's not only a confidence booster, but it's something that will keep the round going."

Rahm, the 2021 US Open champion, captured his fourth title of the year and second major last month at the Masters.

Rahm is an oddsmakers' co-favorite alongside second-ranked American Scottie Scheffler, who would overtake the Spaniard with a victory.

If Rahm wins, he would be halfway to a calendar-year Grand Slam and only a British Open shy of a career Slam.

"It doesn't happen often that a player wins more than one major in a year," Rahm said. "So it would be amazing to be able to join my name to that list."

Only five players in the past 70 years have won the first two majors of a season, the most recent being Spieth in 2015.

Spieth, who would complete a career Slam by winning the PGA, tested his injured left wrist during a workout Tuesday and a nine-hole practice round with Rahm.

The 29-year-old American is set to start Thursday morning alongside Norway's Viktor Hovland and Irishman Shane Lowry, but his status for the event remains uncertain.

McIlroy took a mental health break after missing the cut at last month's Masters and played only one PGA tuneup.

"I needed it at the time," McIlroy said. "Whether it works this week or not remains to be seen."

The four-time major winner said he has lowered expectations to better deal with whatever golf sends his way.

"Just trying to be in a good spot with taking what comes," he said.

And should that fifth major title never come, so be it.

"If I don't win another tournament for the rest of my career, I still see my career as a success," McIlroy said. "I still stand up here as a successful person in my eyes."

<h2>A major win for LIV?</h2>

Six LIV players with a combined 15 major titles are at Oak Hill, including reigning British Open champion Cameron Smith of Australia, six-time major winner Phil Mickelson and four-time major winner Brooks Koepka.

England's Paul Casey reduced the LIV contingent by withdrawing Tuesday, American Sam Stevens replacing him.

Saudi financing and record prize money lured some big names from the PGA Tour to LIV, prompting the tour to ban LIV players and spark a legal fight due to hit courts next May.

Until then, majors mark the only place for LIV and PGA players to compete.

Americans Mickelson and Koepka shared second at the Masters, the top major result by an active LIV player.

Two-time major winner Dustin Johnson won last week's LIV crown in Tulsa but another US contender could be Talor Gooch, a LIV winner last month in Australia and Singapore.

"I imagine he's going to keep playing well. He's a world-class ball striker and just a supreme talent," sixth-ranked Max Homa said.

"He beat every single person and he shot 62-62 in back-to-back rounds (in Adelaide). I'd say it's very impressive."

Northern Ireland golf star Rory McIlroy revealed on Tuesday he had taken a break from the sport to focus on his "mental and emotional well-being" in the wake of his missed cut at the Masters last month.

McIlroy returns to the PGA Tour this week at the Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina feeling refreshed following a three-week hiatus from the sport in the wake of his disappointing Augusta campaign.

The 33-year-old four-time major champion withdrew from the RBC Heritage tournament last month immediately after the Masters without giving an explanation.

On Tuesday McIlroy revealed he had skipped the tournament for his own wellbeing, adding that the turmoil that has rocked golf in the past year since the emergence of the breakaway LIV circuit had taken a toll.

"I needed a break for me," McIlroy told NBC's Golf Channel.&nbsp;

"Obviously, after the disappointment of Augusta, it's been a pretty taxing 12 months mentally, so it was nice to just try to disconnect a little bit and get away from it."

McIlroy has emerged as one of the most trenchant critics of the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf, which has lured several of his Ryder Cup team-mates from the PGA Tour with the offer of lucrative purses and no-cut fields.

McIlroy however said Tuesday he is focused on his future, starting with this week's tournament.

"It's nice to come back and feel refreshed and I think we're on a pretty busy run here from now until after the play-offs so I'm excited to get going," McIlroy said.

"I think it was a bit of a combination of a few things, and just after the disappointment of Augusta and how I played there, it was just more for my mental and emotional wellbeing I just needed to be at home for those few weeks but, as I said, looking forward to getting back this week."

McIlroy said his absence from the tour had left him in a "better headspace than I was."

"I think for me it was a nice reset because I still had to realize that there are three more majors this year, there is a ton left to play for," McIlroy said.&nbsp;

"I needed to leave the last 12 months in the rearview mirror and focus on what's ahead of me. I think the last three weeks has helped me gain that perspective and put me back on the right track."

McIlroy did not give interviews after his Masters exit, and has not been put on the official interview schedule for this week's event at Quail Hollow, where he has won three times before.

His decision to miss the RBC Heritage was the second designated PGA Tour event he has missed this season after skipping the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii in January.

"I think it was a bit of a combination of a few things, and just after the disappointment of Augusta and how I played there, it was just more for my mental and emotional wellbeing I just needed to be at home for those few weeks but, as I said, looking forward to getting back this week." McIlroy said his absence from the tour had left him in a "better headspace than I was." "I think for me it was a nice reset because I still had to realize that there are three more majors this year, there is a ton left to play for," McIlroy said. "I needed to leave the last 12 months in the rearview mirror and focus on what's ahead of me. I think the last three weeks has helped me gain that perspective and put me back on the right track." McIlroy did not give interviews after his Masters exit, and has not been put on the official interview schedule for this week's event at Quail Hollow, where he has won three times before. His decision to miss the RBC Heritage was the second designated PGA Tour event he has missed this season after skipping the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii in January. Golf: Rory McIlroy feeling 'fresh' after mental health break

On a day when one of the most prominent players in the breakaway LIV Golf series led the field at the Masters by three shots, Rory McIlroy, the world number two and the PGA Tour's most active supporter, faced an early exit.

McIlroy shot a five over-par 77 with seven bogeys, 17 strokes behind pace-setter Brooks Koepka, and is facing his second missed Masters cut in three years in a season where many hoped he could finally win at Augusta and complete his career Grand Slam.

Play was stopped due to stormy weather before the second round was complete but at five-over for the tournament, in joint 61st position, the Northern Irishman is well adrift of the projected cut to the low 50 and level, set at two-over.

The 33-year-old has won four majors but it is now nine years since the last of those triumphs in the PGA Championship at Valhalla.

McIlroy has been the unofficial player's spokesman for the PGA Tour in its battle with the Saudi-backed LIV and took a prominent role in recent meetings that led to changes to the PGA Tour, with the introduction of 'enhanced events' boasting smaller fields and bigger purses.

After missing the cut at the Players Championship last month, however, McIlroy said his role in rallying players to the changes and defending the tour from the emergence of LIV had taken a toll on his time management ahead of tournaments.

"I'd love to get back to being a golfer again," he said, adding that he had "maybe sacrificed a little bit of time with some of this other stuff."

Whether his willingness to organize meetings and speak on behalf of the players had any lingering influence on his poor showing at Augusta is, however, uncertain and the Northern Irishman left the grounds during the storm break and did not speak to media.

There certainly did not appear to be much wrong with McIlroy's swing when he practiced on the range ahead of his round on Friday morning and his popularity among the Augusta patrons was evidenced by his warm reception on the first tee.

But, after a solid start on the opening hole, he walked to the second tee, oddly just as his ex-fiancé, former tennis champion Caroline Wozniacki, passed by, and from there his round fell apart.

McIlroy drove into the sand and then fired over the back of the green as he bogeyed the par-5 second and by the seventh hole he had made three more bogeys.

He found water with his approach on the 11th, leaving him looking distraught, and even the boost of birdies on the 13th and 15th was undone by bogeys on the 16th and 18th.

As he had shown earlier in the day on the range, McIlroy has one of the best-looking swings in the game and no one has doubted his talent and ability to handle courses as challenging as Augusta.

- 'The right head space' -

Last year, he finished second after a superb final round of 64, just one short of the Masters record, and he came into this year's tournament saying he had all the ingredients in place for success.

"I'm feeling as relaxed as I ever have coming in here. I feel like my game is in a pretty good place. I know the place just as about as well as anyone," McIlroy said Tuesday.

Ever since McIlroy's meltdown at Augusta in 2011, when the then 21-year-old went into the final round with a four-shot lead but ended it 10 strokes back, there have been people who have questioned his ability to deal with the mental side of the game.

McIlroy certainly understands the importance of the mind in golf and regularly consults with American sports psychologist Bob Rotella.

Perhaps it was significant that on the even of the tournament, McIlroy had referred to his "scar tissue" from Augusta and the importance of the mental game.

"I've always felt like I have the physical ability to win this tournament," he said. "But it's being in the right head space to let those physical abilities shine through."

Rory McIlroy admitted on Tuesday that the PGA Tour's top golfers were reaping the benefits of the emergence of the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;circuit.

McIlroy, one of the staunchest defenders of the PGA Tour in its bitter feud with LIV over the past year, said the launch of the upstart tour had forced the US-based circuit to innovate.

The Northern Ireland star was speaking ahead of this week's Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, which will tee off on Thursday without its reigning champion Cam Smith -- who has since defected to LIV.

The PGA Tour has responded to emergence of the lucrative LIV circuit by introducing its own money-spinning no-cut events starting in 2024.

McIlroy acknowledged on Tuesday that those changes would probably not have happened had it not been for the rise of LIV&nbsp;Golf.

"I'm not going to sit here and lie; I think the emergence of LIV or the emergence of a competitor to the PGA Tour has benefited everyone that plays elite professional&nbsp;golf,"&nbsp;McIlroy&nbsp;told a press conference.

"I think when you've been the biggest&nbsp;golf&nbsp;league in the biggest market in the world for the last 60 years, there's not a lot of incentive to innovate.&nbsp;

"This has caused a ton of innovation at the PGA Tour. What was quite, I would say, an antiquated system is being revamped to try to mirror where we're at in the world in the 21st century with the media landscape.

"The PGA Tour isn't just competing with LIV&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;or other sports. It's competing with Instagram and TikTok and everything else that's trying to take eyeballs away from the PGA Tour as a product.

<h2>Monahan defends 'no-cut'</h2>

"LIV coming along, it's definitely had a massive impact on the game, but I think everyone who's a professional golfer is going to benefit from it going forward."

McIlroy's remarks were mirrored by world number one Jon Rahm, who agreed that the momentum for change on the PGA Tour had been driven by LIV&nbsp;Golf's emergence.

"Without a doubt," Rahm said. "Without LIV&nbsp;Golf, this wouldn't have happened.

"So to an extent, we should be thankful this threat has made the PGA Tour want to change things. I wish it didn't come to the PGA Tour being under fire from somebody else to make those changes and make things better for the players, but I guess it is what we needed.&nbsp;

"So, yeah, it is because of LIV&nbsp;Golf. Otherwise, we wouldn't have seen any of this."

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan meanwhile defended the introduction of no-cut events from 2024, noting that the PGA Tour had held similar format tournaments in the past.

"The players that are competing in our events in this new format next year will have earned the right to compete in them and they will have earned it through top-50 position in the FedExCup this year," Monahan said.

"The PGA Tour has always had limited-field, no-cut 72-hole stroke play events. In fact, Jack Nicklaus won 17 times in that format. Arnold Palmer won 23. Tiger Woods won 26.&nbsp;

"To me, those wins, the format did not diminish those accomplishments as we sit here today. I think as we look out to 2024, 2025, 2026, the same will hold true."

LIV&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;held its inaugural season in 2022, luring a slew of PGA Tour players and major winners with huge signing bonuses and 54-hole tournaments offering purses which dwarf the richest events on the PGA Tour.

The tour faced stinging criticism from human rights groups however who say the circuit is "sports washing" by Saudi Arabia in an attempt to improve the kingdom's international image.
