US Election 2024: A Flip In US Congress Mandate?

US lawmakers on Wednesday (Sep 18) rejected a Republican-backed government funding proposal that would've kept the government running past November's presidential elections.

The bill which was aimed at preventing a government shutdown with a six-month extension of funding, was voted down 220-202 with some Republicans joining Democrats in opposing the measure, as reported.

The Republican plan included the SAVE Act, a controversial measure backed by former President Donald Trump. The act would require proof of citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections, a proposal opposed by the Biden administration, which argues that non citizen voting is already illegal and rare.

The shooter who attempted to assassinate has been officially identified as 20-year-old&nbsp;Thomas Matthew Crooks by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

While insufficient at this stage, the records suggest that Crooks was registered as a Republican voter in Pennsylvania, according to a report in The Associated Press.

However, federal campaign finance reports also show that he donated $15 to the Progressive Turnout Project - a liberal voter turnout group, through the Democratic donation platform ActBlue.&nbsp;The donation was made on January&nbsp;20, 2021, the day President Joe Biden was sworn in to office.

Crooks reportedly graduated in 2022 from&nbsp;Bethel Park High School and received a $500 "star award" from the&nbsp;National Math and Science Initiative, according to The Tribune-Review in western Pennsylvania.

<h2>FBI identifies killed suspect&nbsp;as Crooks</h2>

Immediately after the attack on Trump, the US Secret Service managed to neutralise Crooks, whose identity remained unknown for a few hours. After initially refusing to reveal the identity without a DNA test, FBI made the identity official after media reports started carrying the name.&nbsp;

"The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the subject involved in the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump on July 13, in Butler, Pennsylvania," the FBI said in a statement quoted by NBC and CBS.

According to witness accounts, photos and video footage available, it becomes clear that Crooks had positioned himself some 130-150 yards away from the stage at&nbsp;Butler Farm Showgrounds, where the presidential campaign event was in full swing.

According to one of the witnesses, Crooks calmly climbed the roof of the building, settled in his position and fired the bullets, despite the public urging the security agencies to take action.&nbsp;

After Crooks was taken down by one of the snipers, agencies found an AR-style rifle at the scene. According to some media reports, he was wearing&nbsp;a Demolition Ranch T-shirt, which is one of the biggest firearms YouTube channels.&nbsp;

Authorities are now investigating if Crooks was a 'lone wolf' or he had support of others.&nbsp;

"It's too early to make that call. We have tentatively identified one shooter, but our investigation continues. We're following numerous leads, and it will take some time before we can conclusively determine if there was only one gunman," stated Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bevins.

Meanwhile, the Secret Service has been summoned by the House Oversight Committee to testify as to what led to&nbsp;the massive lapse in the security apparatus of the former president.&nbsp;

George Clooney may have been a Democratic party loyalist for years, but he is convinced that the incumbent United States&nbsp;President&nbsp;Joe Biden 'cannot win' the&nbsp;presidential election&nbsp;in November. Clooney has urged the Democrats to look for a new candidate in a bombshell op-ed he has written&nbsp;for the New York Times which was published&nbsp;on Wednesday (Jul 10). The Oscar-winning actor-filmmaker has said&nbsp;that Biden is no longer the same person he once was.&nbsp;

In his guest piece, the 63-year-old revealed how he has been one of the biggest fundraisers for the Democratic party. “I have led some of the biggest fund-raisers in my party’s history. Barack Obama in 2012. Hillary Clinton in 2016. Joe Biden in 2020. Last month I co-hosted the single largest fund-raiser supporting any Democratic candidate ever, for President Biden’s re-election.”

The actor clarified that he mentioned his involvement in fundraisers to highlight the gravity of the situation and his dedication to the party.&nbsp;

“I say all of this only to express how much I believe in this process and how profound I think this moment is,” he wrote. Calling himself a “lifelong Democrat,” Clooney admitted that Biden, 81, should not seek reelection.

“I love Joe Biden. As a senator. As a vice president and as president. I consider him a friend, and I believe in him. Believe in his character. Believe in his morals. In the last four years, he’s won many of the battles he’s faced,” Clooney wrote.&nbsp;

Clooney blamed Biden's age for the change. “This is about age. Nothing more.”

“But also nothing that can be reversed. We are not going to win in November with this president.” The actor also added that it was not only his opinion but the opinion of every Democrat.

“On top of that, we won’t win the House, and we’re going to lose the Senate. This isn’t only my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator and congress member and governor that I’ve spoken with in private. Every single one, irrespective of what he or she is saying publicly,” Clooney wrote.

Senate Republicans on Wednesday (June 5) voted to block a bill which was placed on the table by Democrats to ensure guaranteed access to contraception bills across the US,&nbsp;bringing the controversial issue into sharp focus ahead of November’s presidential elections.

The bill, the Right to Contraception Act, was envisioned to be enshrined into federal law which will give individuals a right to buy and use contraceptives as well as allow health care providers to provide them.

The bill, if it were made into law, will be applicable to birth control pills, condoms, the plan B pill, and other forms of contraception.

"The Right to Contraception Act simply says, if you want to access birth control or if you're a healthcare provider wanting to prescribe birth control, the government has no right to interfere. Doesn't that seem like common sense?" Schumer said.

Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn said, "It's not a serious attempt to legislate, this is just a show vote in anticipation of the election." "Democrats think they can win this case, this election based on reproductive rights and somehow they're suggesting that contraception is in jeopardy, which is just blatantly false," he added. "Abortion is not healthcare, it is homicide," believe Republicans in Texas, and they are open to imposing the death penalty on those who provide the procedure.

Delegates to the Texas GOP convention, over the weekend, voted on a 2024 party platform that announces, "Abortion is not healthcare; it is homicide," and wants to overturn a state law that bars prosecuting a person who performs an abortion from being charged with homicide.&nbsp;

Instead, the platform demands laws that would "abolish abortion by immediately securing the right to life and equal protection of the laws to all preborn children from the moment of fertilisation."&nbsp;

In doing so, it's following an uncompromising wing of the anti-abortion movement known as "abortion abolitionists."&nbsp;

Mainstream anti-abortion movements, generally, do not support punishing the women who seek abortions, however, abolitionists insist that if the fetus is a person, then the provider and the patient are both killers and deserve to be treated as murderers.

There was no mention of explicitly punishing the people who try to get an abortion, which means that the fate of abortion seekers remains unclear.

In the past, Texas legislators have gone to the extent of introducing bills which sought to impose death on abortion patients but hit a deadlock.

Now, even if the law does not punish abortion-seeking women, it does bring with it lots of other implications for the Texas law, including cutting off access to in-vitro fertilisation.

Texas is home to one in 10 American women of reproductive age and has long been a testing ground for much of the nation's most restrictive reproductive rights legislation. As per The Guardian, the state's laws about abortion and clinic regulations have even been a model for the passage of such bills in other states far outside of Texas.

<h2>Homosexuality "a sin"</h2>

The platform for the Texas GOP, which stretches to over 50 pages, also talks about other hot-button issues, including homosexuality, which it describes as an "abnormal lifestyle choice".

It also equates giving minors gender-affirming care as "child abuse."&nbsp;

Among other things, it calls for the reversal of recent military base name changes to "publicly honour the southern heroes." It supports "affirmation of God, including prayer, the Bible, and the Ten Commandments being returned to our schools, courthouses, and other government buildings".

While the Texas GOP has voted on the proposed platform, the votes are still to be counted. The party, as per the Guardian report, hasn't said whether the platform has been formally adopted or made any statement regarding its position on abortion.&nbsp;

In any case, ideas adopted by the GOP are not a law-making agenda. They are not guaranteed to become law—considering that the next time the Texas Legislature convenes will be in January 2025.

'Abortion is murder,' and Republicans in Texas are open to punishing it with death penalty: Report

The governor of the US state of Louisiana, on Friday (May 24) signed a first-of-its-kind legislation that added two abortion-inducing drugs to the state’s list of controlled and dangerous substances. This comes after the Republican lawmakers in the southern US state passed the bill which would criminalise possession of abortion pills without a prescription.&nbsp;

<h2>About the bill</h2>

The signing of the bill makes Louisiana the only state in the US to categorise mifepristone and misoprostol – medicines that are used in medication abortions, the most common method of abortion in the United States – as controlled dangerous substances.&nbsp;

The legislation was&nbsp;passed by 64-29 in the state house and 29-7 in the state senate, and was later signed into law by Republican Governor Jeff Landry adding the abortion drugs to Schedule IV of the state’s Uniform Controlled Dangerous Substances Law.

The bill now places mifepristone and misoprostol, commonly used for abortions including at-home medication abortions in the same category as Valium and Xanax.&nbsp;

The possession of abortion drugs in question, without a prescription, would be punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

The bill exempts authorised medical practitioners from prosecution as well as pregnant women if they have the medication for their own use.&nbsp;

Opponents of the legislation, including many physicians, argued that abortion drugs have other critical reproductive health care uses and changing the classification would make it more difficult to prescribe the medicines, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

Ahead of the passage of the bill, over 200 doctors in the state signed a letter to lawmakers warning that the measure could produce a “barrier to physicians’ ease of prescribing appropriate treatment” and cause unnecessary fear and confusion among both patients and physicians.&nbsp;

On the other hand, the supporters of the bill, as per AP have said that it would protect expectant mothers from coerced abortions, citing3&nbsp;one example of that happening in the state of Texas.&nbsp;

The new law will take effect on October 1.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Outrageous’</h2>

US President Joe Biden called the move by Louisiana lawmakers “outrageous” and went on to blame his predecessor, Donald Trump.

“This is a direct result of Trump overturning Roe v. Wade,” said the US president in a statement by his campaign, referring to the landmark Supreme Court ruling that had enshrined the right to abortion in the US Constitution.&nbsp;

He added, “This is a scary time for women across America. If Donald Trump regains power, he will try to make what is happening in states like Louisiana a reality nationwide.”

Abortion rights remain one of the most hotly debated topics across the US ahead of the presidential election in November where several states have and are seeking to put the medical procedure on the ballot this year.&nbsp;

US House of Representatives passed a bill on Thursday (May 16) to mandate the country to send weapons to Israel. The move by Republicans was meant to spotlight Democratic divisions over the Israel-Hamas war.

Notably, the Biden administration recently paused a shipment of 3,500 bombs, including some weighing up to 2,000 pounds, to discourage Israel's offensive on Rafah. However, Republicans have criticised President Joe Biden for delaying bomb shipments and abandoning US ally Israel.

The Israel Security Assistance Support Act was passed with 224 to 187 votes. Sixteen Democrats supported the measure while three Republicans opposed it. However, the bill is unlikely to become law.

In yet another attempt by the Republican party to get United States President Joe Biden removed from office, outgoing House of Representatives member Ken Buck has called on Vice President Kamala Harris to oust her boss by invoking the 25th amendment of the US Constitution for being too old and “incapable”.

<h2>What is the 25th Amendment?</h2>

Buck, 65, on Monday (Feb 26) introduced a resolution calling for Harris to convene a cabinet meeting and invoke the 25th Amendment to declare Democrat President Biden, 81, “incapable of executing the duties of his office.”

The VP and a majority of the cabinet would have to agree to oust the president if he&nbsp;is deemed incapable of carrying out his duties, as per section four of the 25th Amendment.&nbsp;

Harris, as per Buck’s resolution, should “convene and mobilise the principal officers of the executive departments of the cabinet to activate section four of the 25th amendment to declare President Joseph R Biden incapable of executing the duties of his office”.

He also cited special counsel Robert Hur’s <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/biden-willfully-retained-classified-documents-but-no-criminal-charges-warranted-special-counsel-688431">damning report </a>which called Biden a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.” The Biden administration vehemently refuted Hur’s characterisation of the US president.&nbsp;

<h2>Is Trump any better?</h2>

As the US gears up for the presidential election, likely to be a rematch between&nbsp;Trump and Biden, polls have shown that most voters have expressed concerns about the incumbent president’s age.&nbsp;

At 81, Biden is the oldest president in US history and would be 86 by the end of a second term, if he wins. However, Trump who is around three and a half years younger than his successor, was also the oldest president in American history by the end of his term.&nbsp;

“You got to take a look at the other guy, he’s about as old as I am, but he can’t remember his wife’s name,” Biden said during an appearance on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers, on Monday (Feb 26).&nbsp;

Last week, the former president praised his wife, Melania, and referenced “Mercedes” – Mercedes Schlapp who was his former aide, leading many to suggest that Trump had used the wrong name for his wife.&nbsp;

Democrat leader&nbsp;Tom Suozzi has won the special election to New York's 3rd District, beating&nbsp;Republican candidate Mazi Pilip,&nbsp;according to US media reports.&nbsp;Suozzi's victory means he will be replacing embattled former GOP Rep. George Santos.&nbsp;

The seat had been vacant since Santos was ousted from the Congressional chamber late last year over a plethora of high-profile scandals and criminal charges.&nbsp;

“The people of Queens and Long Island are sick and tired of political bickering.&nbsp;They want us to come together and solve problems,"&nbsp;Suozzi said in a victory speech.

“Let’s send a message to our friends running the Congress these days: Stop running around for Trump, and start running the country,” he added.&nbsp;

Pilip conceded the race and said she had called Suozzi to congratulate him on the victory.&nbsp;

“Yes we lost, but it doesn’t mean we are going to end here,” Pilip told supporters at her election watch party.

<h2>What does the win signify?</h2>

With the win, the Democrats have narrowed the already razor-thin House majority enjoyed by the Republicans - making passing of legislation even more difficult. The House Democrats have risen to 213, closing in on the 219-member GOP majority.&nbsp;

Effectively, it means that Republicans can allow only two defectors to break ranks and still pass legislation along the party&nbsp;high-command lines.&nbsp;

The thin margin for error has already embarrassed the GOP lawmakers in the chamber. Last week, Homeland Security Chief Alejandro Mayorkas avoided impeachment following a 214-216 vote which marked a blow for Speaker Mike Johnson and other Republican leaders.

Colorado Rep. Ken Buck, Wisconsin Rep. Mike Gallagher and California Rep. Tom McClintock were the three Republicans who halted Mayorkas' exit after Mark Green, who presides over the Homeland Security Committee, sent the impeachment articles.&nbsp;

It took another attempt by the Republicans on Tuesday (Feb 13) to finally get rid of&nbsp;Mayorkas, whom they blame for the surge in migrants illegally crossing the southern border.

The failed attempt to impeach Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday&nbsp;night (Feb 7) marked a significant setback for House Speaker Mike Johnson, shedding light on the disarray within the chamber.

Despite a historic attempt – the first to impeach a Cabinet member since 1876 – the vote fell short by a mere two votes, concluding with a tally of 214 to 216.

Notably, the defection of four Republicans, including Reps. Mike Gallagher, Ken Buck, Tom McClintock, and Blake Moore, who sided with the unanimous Democrats, played a pivotal role in the outcome.

<h2>Moore's last-minute change</h2>

Blake Moore's last-second change of vote to "no" allowed for the possibility of revisiting the issue later, while House Majority Leader Steve Scalise's absence due to health reasons further complicated the situation, leaving uncertainties about a potential future attempt by the GOP to impeach Mayorkas.

The failed impeachment also sheds light on the&nbsp;diminished power of the GOP in the House, following the slim majority they held after the 2022 midterms, which they lost after the resignation of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

<h2>What's the historical context?</h2>

Earlier, the House made history by voting to expel Rep. George Santos of New York, a move that was met with mockery by Santos himself on social media.

Rep. Gallagher's unexpected vote against impeachment, despite his prominent role as the chair of the House's select committee on China and his potential for a US Senate run, drew attention and speculation.

Republicans Buck and McClintock, who also voted "no",&nbsp;expressed doubts about the impeachment case, questioning its constitutional threshold and warning about dangerous precedents that could be set.

While Mayorkas' impeachment was unlikely to succeed in the Senate due to the Democrats' narrow majority, senators from both parties voiced displeasure with the impeachment effort, citing concerns about the constitutional standards and the potential repercussions of such actions.

Before the vote, McClintock slammed his fellow Republicans' impeachment push in a 10-page harshly worded letter, highlighting&nbsp;its negative implications both politically and constitutionally.

“[T]aking the course outlined by the [Homeland Security Committee] is bad politics and bad policy. It is bad politics because it taints with partisanship what would otherwise be overwhelming national opposition to Democrats’ open borders policy. It is bad policy because it strengthens a dangerous constitutional precedent the Democrats will surely use against conservatives on the Supreme Court and a future Republican administration the moment they have that opportunity,” McClintock wrote in his letter.

Meet the four Republicans who rescued Alejandro Mayorkas from impeachment

The US House of Representatives on Tuesday (Feb 6) voted against a standalone $17.6 billion Israel aid bill brought by the Republicans. The bill was aimed at thwarting an all-encompassing Senate border security bill that would provide&nbsp;additional aid to both Ukraine and Israel as well as secure the southern border&nbsp;introduced over the weekend.&nbsp;

Although the House voted 250-180 in favour of the bill, it was short of the two-thirds majority needed to approve it under a&nbsp;fast-tracked legislative process. The failure of the bill to get through the House marked another embarrassment for Speaker Mike Johnson after the Homeland Security chief narrowly survived impeachment in the same chamber&nbsp;minutes ago.&nbsp;

Earlier on Monday&nbsp;(Feb 5), the Senate&nbsp;agreed on a bipartisan $118 billion deal that attempts to overhaul the immigration policy and provide foreign emergency aid to friendly nations&nbsp;currently in crisis.&nbsp;

Despite the bill receiving a rare bipartisan nod in the Senate, Johnson said it would be "dead on arrival" in the chamber.

While not being involved in the thick of things, former president Donald Trump has been pulling the strings from outside and egging his GOP lawmakers to dump the bill.&nbsp;

<h2>Democrats against the standalone bill</h2>

The standalone bill was an attempt by the Republicans to move quickly to support Israel with the leaders insisting it was not a political stunt. However, the Democrats believe otherwise.&nbsp;

"This accomplishes nothing and delays aid getting out to our allies and providing humanitarian relief.&nbsp;Our allies are facing existential threats and our friends and foes around the globe are watching, waiting to see how America will respond," said Democrat leader&nbsp;Rosa DeLauro.&nbsp;

Even if the bill was passed in the House, experts believe the Senate would have not taken it up as President Joe Biden threatened to veto it on Monday, calling it a&nbsp;“cynical political manoeuvre”.

"The Administration strongly encourages both chambers of the Congress to reject this political ploy and instead quickly send the bipartisan Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act to the President’s desk," the White House Office of Management and Budget said in a statement.
