The giants can grow up to three metres long and can weigh up to 300 kg. The Mekong fish are found only in southeast Asia’s Mekong River. But over time, they have inhabited the entire river which is 4,900km long. The river starts in Vietnam and ends in China’s Yunnan province.

The population of giant catfish has dropped by around 80 per cent in recent decades due to overfishing. The construction of dams blocking the path for the fish to migrate has also played a role in their population decrease.

The six giant fish were found in five days. The first two were on the Tonle Sap River, which is near the capital city of Phnom Penh. On Tuesday (Dec 10), four more giants were found by fishermen which were later released after identification. Notably, two of the fish were longer than two meters.&nbsp;

“It’s a hopeful sign that the species is not in imminent, like in the next few years, risk of extinction, which gives conservation activities time to be implemented and to continue to bend the curve away from decline and toward recovery,” Dr Zeb Hogan, a University of Nevada Reno research biologist who leads the US Agency for International Development-funded Wonders of the Mekong project, told BBC.

Sowa is a rare kind of fish which is considered priceless, and the substance present in its belly is believed to have great medicinal and healing properties. The doctors also use a thread-like substance, which is found in the fish, in some surgical procedures.

"One fish fetches around 7 million rupees (approximately $24,731) in the auction," stated Baloch, as reported by the Indian news agency PTI. Generally, the fish weighs between 20 to 40 kgs and can grow by 1.5 metres. This fish is very popular in East Asian countries.

On November 13, Jay Beiler was walking on Black’s Beach in Torrey Pines in San Diego when he spotted the “ultra-rare” species.

He initially thought that it was a jellyfish, but upon a closer look, he realised that it was something that he had never seen before.

The odd-looking creature piqued Beiler’s interest as he clicked three pictures of the creature&nbsp;and shared them with others.

The photos eventually ended up with scientists at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, who&nbsp;revealed that the creature was a Pacific footballfish.

In an interview to a local media, Beiler said that the creature was large, and its length was about a foot.

“I have never seen anything quite like this before,” Beiler told NBC 7 San Diego.

“At first, I thought it was a like a jellyfish or something, and then I went and looked at it a little more carefully, and some other people were gathered around it too, and then I saw that it was this very unusual fish. It’s the stuff of nightmares mouth almost looked bloody,”

Scientifically known as Himantolophidae, footballfish lives in waters that are 3,000-4,000 feet deep. The creature is mostly found in tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans.

A professor of zoology, Johan Reinhardt, had first discovered the fish in 1837.
