Captain Cook's statue was reported felled near Jacka Boulevard, cut off at the shins and sprayed with the words: "The colony will fall."&nbsp;

Meanwhile, former monarch Queen Victoria's statue was smeared with red paint.&nbsp;

Victorian premier, Jacinta Allan condemned the attack and said this sort of "vandalism" did not have a place in Australian society.&nbsp;

“We will be working with the council to repair and reinstate the statue in St Kilda that has been vandalised overnight," said Allan.&nbsp;

Opposition leader&nbsp;John Pesutto also stood in Allan's corner and called the incident "unacceptable".&nbsp;

“There’s no place for acts of vandalism or any other violent acts against people or property in our community.&nbsp;We support the right of people to protest and demonstrate but it must always be done in a peaceful and respectful way."

Notably, this is not the first instance when the Captain Cook statue has been vandalised on the eve of Australia Day. In 2018, pink paint was dumped on the statue.&nbsp;

Earlier this week, the Australian men's cricket team captain called for a change to the date of Australia Day and backed the decision to not use the event for the marketing of the Brisbane Test.&nbsp;

“We should have an Australia Day, but we can probably find a more appropriate day to celebrate it. Once you start realising Jan 26 and why it is chosen, Australia Day is meant to be a celebration of everything Australia and our history. [So] we could choose a better date," said Cummins.&nbsp;

Cricket Australia&nbsp;dropped the term “Australia Day” from marketing in 2021, when some Big Bash League teams wore Indigenous strips for games played on 26 January.

The letter was penned in November 1986 after the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney was restored, and since then, it has been kept in a glass case within a locked room in the dome of the palace.

However, no one knows what the letter says—not even the Queen’s personal staff. So, one has to wait till 2085 to know the content of the letter.

&nbsp;“On a suitable day to be selected by you in the year 2085 A.D, would you please open this envelope and convey to the citizens of Sydney my message to them,” the instruction addressed to the Lord Mayor of Sydney says.

It is simply signed, “Elizabeth R.”

The Queen Victoria Building was established in 1898 and named in honour of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, which was observed the previous year to commemorate the monarch's accession 60 years earlier.

Queen Victoria was the great-great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth.

Queen Elizabeth II, who was crowned in 1952, first visited Australia in 1954, two years after she ascended the throne. She has visited the country 16 times.

The British monarch serves as the head of state in Australia. King Charles III took over after his mother passed away.

In 1999, a referendum was conducted in Australia to decide if it wanted to become a republic.

About 54 per cent of the population at the time sided with the Queen continuing to remain the head of state. Consequently, the Queen's head of state position stayed unabolished.

The queen of the United Kingdom crossed a new milestone by posting her first message on the Instagram social media on Thursday where she published an image of a letter sent by an early pioneer of computers to her great-great-grandfather.

Elizabeth II, who broke one record by being already the longest-serving monarch in UK history after becoming Queen in 1952, shared an image of the letter sent to Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, on @theRoyalFamily’s Instagram account during a visit to London's Science Museum.

"Today, as I visit the Science Museum I was interested to discover a letter from the Royal Archives, written in 1843 to my great-great-grandfather Prince Albert," Elizabeth wrote to the accounts 4.6 million followers. "Charles Babbage, credited as the world’s first computer pioneer, designed the 'Difference Engine,' of which Prince Albert had the opportunity to see a prototype in July 1843," she added.

The UK head of state added that Babbage told Queen Victoria and Prince Albert all about the "Analytical Engine," which was the starting point for the computer age, using programs that Ada Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron, had devised.

The queen was visiting the renowned London museum to launch "Top Secret: From Ciphers to Cyber Security," an exhibition that commemorates achievements of the UK's intelligence service headquarters GCHQ, currently based in the western city of Cheltenham.

The monarch's visit commemorated the communications intelligence service's centenary.

"GCHQ has been at the heart of the nation's security for 100 years," Jeremy Fleming, GCHQ director said in a statement that was shared on Twitter.&nbsp;

"It has saved countless lives, given Britain an edge, and solved or harnessed some of the world's hardest technology challenges. It's a privilege to share the exciting story of our people and technology," Fleming added.

The monarch took a tour of the museum and the exhibition and viewed the computer on which Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web, amongst other items from the GCHQ's historic collection.&nbsp;

The show spans communications intelligence from World War I to most recent innovations in cybersecurity in the 21st century.

As well as handwritten documents, declassified files and never before seen objects from the museum archive and the GCHQ's collection, there will be interactive spaces that will enable visitors to become code-breakers and puzzle solvers.

The exhibition opens on July 10 and will run until Feb. 2020, the museum said.
