But the new filing expands Apple&#39;s claims and seeks to stop Qualcomm&#39;s longstanding business model using a legal theory based on a ruling last month.

 
The US&nbsp;Supreme Court made it harder for manufacturers and drug companies to control how their products are used or resold, ruling in May against printer company Lexmark International in a patent dispute over another company&#39;s resale of its used ink cartridges.

 
In a Tuesday brief seen by Reuters, Apple took aim at Qualcomm&#39;s practice of requiring customers to sign patent license agreements before purchasing chips, known in the industry as &quot;no license, no chips&quot;.

The license allows Qualcomm to take a percentage of the overall selling price for iPhone in exchange for supplying the modem chips that let phones connect to cellular data networks.

Apple argued that the ruling involving Lexmark showed that Qualcomm was entitled to only &quot;one reward&quot; for its intellectual property and products.

Qualcomm should be allowed to charge for either a patent license or a chip, but not both, Apple argued.

Apple wants to be able to buy chips without signing the license agreement that forces it to pay a part of the overall iPhone sale price.

Apple also asked the court to stop lawsuits that Qualcomm had filed against Foxconn Technology Group and three other contract makers that assemble the iPhone on Apple&#39;s behalf and are the formal buyers of Qualcomm&#39;s chip, as is standard in the electronics industry.

Expanding its tablet PC range, Samsung has launched the Galaxy Tab S3 in India. The tablet will be available in black and silver colours at Rs 47,990 from June 20. 

Under a special launch offer that runs till July 31, the Galaxy Tab S3 will be offered with one-time screen replacement at Rs 990, which holds valid for a period of 12 months from purchase. Besides, the company is also offering Reliance Jio&rsquo;s double data offer of 28+28 GB a month plan at Rs 309. It will be valid till December 31.

Weighing 434 grams, the new tablet features a 9.7-inch&nbsp;Super AMOLED display and a 6mm thin metal frame. It comes with an advanced S Pen, which includes features such as Screen-off Memos, Samsung Notes, and Air Command. Users can also utilise S Pen&rsquo;s handy PDF Annotation function to get work done on-the-go.

Powered by a Qualcomm&nbsp;Snapdragon&nbsp;820 processor coupled with 4 GB of RAM, the Galaxy Tab S3 includes&nbsp;32GB of internal memory. Users can expand the memory up to 256GB using a microSD card. 

Running Android 7.0 Nougat, the Galaxy Tab S3 has a 6,000mAh battery, which is claimed to have 12 hours of video playback.&nbsp;The tablet sports a&nbsp;13 megapixel autofocus rear camera with flash and a 5 megapixel front camera.&nbsp;

Samsung Flow on the tablet&nbsp;uses biometric authentication to log-in and can wirelessly tether compatible devices to transfer documents from a mobile device to a tablet. It also syncs message notifications. 

Galaxy Tab S3 is touted to be the first Samsung tablet to feature a four stereo setup tuned by AKG, owned by Harman International.

While government is pushing for digital payments through mobile phones, chipset maker Qualcomm said that wallets and mobile banking applications in India are not using hardware level security which can make online transactions more secure.

&quot;You will be surprised because most of the banking or wallet apps around the world don&#39;t use hardware security. They actually run completely in Android mode and users password can be stolen. Users use fingerprint which might be captured ... in India that is the case for most of all digital wallets and mobile banking apps,&quot; Qualcomm Senior Director Product Management Sy Choudhury told reporters here.

He said that even most famous digital payment application in India is not using hardware level security.

&quot;Reason we are saying that none of them is using it because we work with OEMs (original equipment makers),&quot; Choudhury said.

As per market research firm Strategy Analytics, Qualcomm leads mobile chipset market globally with 37 per cent share. &quot;Everyone is getting connected, everyone is getting authenticated by device. How do you know that your device is getting ready for demonetisation? When you download a mobile banking app you dont know if it is using hardware security or not,&quot; Choudhury said. He said that Qualcomm is now approaching digital payments companies for using secure environment for processing payments on mobile phone.

&quot;We are providing secure execution environment in the chipsets. This layer separates transactions on mobile phone from operating system. This checks any malware from effecting transactions,&quot; Choudhury said.

He said that Qualcomm is also coming up with new feature in its mobile chipsets from 2017 that verify user with payment gateway using unique features like device id, phone manufacturer signature, Android version in the phone, root kit of operating system, location and time, which will be nearly impossible to duplicate.

&quot;Device attestation feature will start shipping in 2017. For end users it should be available by end of 2017,&quot; Choudhury said.

The company has partnered with software security company Avast to generate alerts for users in case their mobile phones are infected with virus or malware.

Choudhury lauded Indias Aadhaar authentication system.

&quot;Aadhaar initiated by Indian government, the path that it is moving now with digital version of Aadhaar is far ahead then most government in the entire world,&quot; Choudhury said.
