Air travel in the Asia Pacific is still low compared to pre-pandemic levels because governments like China and Japan are somewhat sluggish to remove Covid entrance restrictions.&nbsp;

By the end of 2022, according to a new analysis from global travel industry experts at the Centre for Aviation (CAPA), Europe will overtake the Asia Pacific as the world's top travel area.

According to CAPA, aviation in the Asian Pacific area is still 45 per cent lower than it was before the pandemic. This is despite the region formerly making up more than a third of all international passenger travel.&nbsp;

In the meanwhile, according to CAPA, 85 per cent of pre-pandemic levels have been reached in terms of European air travel, even after taking into consideration the ongoing effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;

3.38 billion people travelled through airports in the Asia Pacific region in 2019. In contrast, ACI Asia-Pacific, an industry group that represents airports in the area, predicts that by the end of 2022, 1.84 billion people will have gone through the region's travel hubs.

According to ACI Asia-Pacific and CAPA, the "zero-Covid" border policy of China and the gradual easing of travel restrictions in Japan are major contributors to this delayed recovery. On October 11, Japan will formally reopen to visitors.&nbsp;

The Asia Pacific won't fully resume its pre-pandemic travel levels until the end of 2023 or early 2024, according to CAPA's prediction.&nbsp;

In order to promote travel recovery, CAPA calls for the "harmonisation of international travel rules," and "political commitments towards openness and freedom of movement," as well as a continuing vaccination campaign.

"The industry itself needs to solve it," he told BBC TV. "The government doesn't run airports, it doesn't run the airlines. The industry needs to do that."

Airlines had hoped for a bumper summer for passengers after two years of COVID-19 travel restrictions.

But they have struggled to recruit staff after the turmoil of the pandemic, and complain it is taking longer to recruit new employees and vet them for security clearance.

Shapps said staff cuts during the pandemic had gone too deep.

"We'll work with the industry very hard ... to make sure we don't see a repeat of those scenes," he said.

A change in the law was making it easier to deal with the administration needed for security clearance, he said, adding he did not envisage a need for the army to be called in to help speed up the security checks.&nbsp;

Post-pandemic rebound in demand leads to aviation chaos in Europe

In early 2020, only 14 countries had cabinets where women held at least half of posts. They included Rwanda, Finland, Canada, Colombia and Peru.

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, who made history as South Africa’s first female deputy president in 2005, said gender-balanced cabinets made better decisions not just for women, but for society as a whole.

“You reduce the likelihood of missing out on the needs of some people because you just have never walked in their shoes,” she added.

She said female leaders, from New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to former German chancellor Angela Merkel, had rightly won praise for their handling of the COVID-19 crisis.

“Women tended not to focus on the politics, but just on finding solutions, so they would work with everybody,” she added.

Getting more women into local government also makes a difference, Mlambo-Ngcuka said. In India, for example, women-led councils have pushed for better access to clean water,&nbsp;critical for preventing the spread of the virus.

Barriers to women's participation in public life include political parties' reluctance to support them, lack of funding, public perceptions that men make better leaders, and violence and intimidation, including cyber-abuse.

More than 80 per cent&nbsp;of women parliamentarians surveyed globally have experienced psychological violence. One in four have suffered physical violence and one in five sexual violence.

On January 25 last year, Estonia became the only country with a female president and female prime minister.

However, the number of women parliamentarians worldwide has more than doubled since 1995 to 25 per cent.

Women are also at the forefront of the battle against COVID-19, as front-line and health sector workers, as scientists, doctors and caregivers, yet they get paid 11 per cent less globally than their male counterparts.&nbsp;

An analysis of COVID-19 task teams from 87 countries found only 3.5 per cent of them had gender parity.

Mlambo-Ngcuka said it was crucial that women play a leading role in building more inclusive post-COVID-19 economies, particularly as so many women had been pushed into poverty.

“If women do not recover from the poverty they’ve been thrown in because of COVID, many families and communities are going to be in a very difficult situation for a very long time. And that is going to be a problem for everybody,” she said.
