Jewish groups have reported a spike in reported acts of antisemitism following Hamas' October 7 attack on Israel and the consequent war in Gaza.

An armed gang on Saturday (May 18) staged a robbery in France's capital Paris which was aimed at looting the exclusive Harry Winston boutique, also known as “Jeweler to the Stars.”&nbsp;

As per local media reports, the robbers snatched jewellery from a shop near the world-famous Champs Elysees avenue, which is one of the poshest areas in the city, before speeding away on motorbikes.

The police said that the team of robbers, with one of them armed with a long weapon, may have escaped with millions of euros in loot.

The footage of the incident broadcasted by BFM-TV showed the individuals dressed in black. They fired a gunshot outside the shop on Avenue Montaigne, news agency AFP reported citing a police source familiar with the case.

The reports stated that the robbery occurred at around 11:45 am (0945 GMT).

It had been a "warning shot" with "no one injured", the source familiar with the case added.

The Paris prosecutor's office overseeing the investigation into the incident confirmed that the location of the robbery was Avenue Montaigne. This is where Harry Winston's by-appointment store is located.

According to the source, it could be "several days" before the exact value of the robbery can be ascertained.

Gang of armed robbers steal jewellery worth millions of euros in Paris

An American mann accused of sexually assaulting a Pennsylvania college student in 2013 and later sending her a Facebook message that said "So I raped you" has been arrested in France after a three-year search.

Cleary was the subject of&nbsp;an international search since authorities in the US state of Pennsylvania issued a 2021 warrant, weeks after the US media reported on the purported reluctance of local prosecutors to pursue sex crimes committed in the university campuses.&nbsp;

Cleary was detained on the street in Metz on April 24 as part of a police check.&nbsp;

Cleary claimed he "arrived in France two or three years ago" from Albania and had only recently come to Metz, but did not have housing there.

"I am ready to open this debate which must include anti-missile defence, long-range capabilities, and nuclear weapons for those who have them or who host American nuclear armaments," the French president said in an interview with regional press group EBRA.

"Let us put it all on the table and see what really protects us in a credible manner," he added.

France will "maintain its specificity but is ready to contribute more to the defence of Europe,"&nbsp;Macron further said.

Following Britain's exit from the European Union, France is the only country in the bloc that owns nuclear weapons.

Macron on Thursday (Apr 25) warned that today's Europe "could die" calling for stronger, more integrated European defences.

Stating that the continent was facing an existential threat from Russian aggression, Macron outlined his long-term vision for Europe involving less dependency on the United States.

He then dubbed Moscow's invasion of Ukraine as "uninhibited" saying that it wasn't clear as to where Russia's "limits" lay.

"Over the next decade... there is an immense risk of (Europe) being weakened or even relegated," he added, also pointing to the risk of Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon.&nbsp;

Macron said the risk is that Europe will experience a decline and that despite all the efforts "we are already starting to see this".

He said he stood by his comments, which he said were a policy of "strategic ambiguity".

"Do we have limits in ensuring the security of Europeans? No," he added.

The French president called on Europe to be more self-reliant saying that it should bring about a change as in the past, the continent was over-dependent on Moscow for energy and Washington for security.

He said the required "sine qua non" for European security was "that Russia does not win the war of aggression in Ukraine".

"We need to build this strategic concept of a credible European defence for ourselves," Macron said, adding Europe could not be "a vassal" of the United States.&nbsp;

The famous Mona Lisa portrait by Leonardo da Vinci could now have a room of its own in the Louvre, Paris.

The museum's president announced the move on Saturday (Apr 27) stating that this would provide the visitors a better experience especially the ones who visit the Louvre for the iconic painting alone.

"It's always frustrating when you don't give visitors the best possible reception, and that is the case for the Mona Lisa," Laurence des Cars was quoted as saying by news agency AFP.

"A better solution seems necessary to me today," she added.

She further said that the Louvre was in contact with the culture ministry about potential solutions.

The Louvre, which is the world's most popular museum, in the year 2023, welcomed over nine million visitors.

Des Cars said that nearly 80 per cent of the visitors brave the massive crowd to get a glimpse of the iconic portrait or capture selfies showing Mona Lisa's mysterious smile.&nbsp;

The Mona Lisa currently shares space with the Louvre's biggest painting, The Wedding at Cana by Paolo Veronese along with other works by 16th-century Venetian masters in the the museum's Salle des Etats (State Room).

The portrait is displayed in a protective glass case.

Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit organization (NGO) based out of France, has warned the Paris Olympic 2024 organisers of poor water quality in the iconic Seine river. Notably, athletes will be required to swim in the river during Olympic and Paralympic triathlon and marathon swimming events. In less than four months, Paris will be hosting sports' biggest carnival but the report by NGO has raised a few concerns.

Surfrider shared a post on its official Facebook page which mentioned that bacteriological pollution at Alexandre III Bridge, starting point of several water events, is above the permissible limit. The NGO also warned of various health risks posed by the pollution which includes 'common infections such as otitis and conjunctivitis to more severe infections such as staphylococcus.'

The NGO says to have conducted testing on 14 water samples since November 2023 and claims that all the results showed non-satisfactory quality according to European Bathing Water Directive standards .

The organisation&nbsp;says that the causes of pollution range from 'rainfall to malfunctions in the sewage system, including poorly connected barges and animal waste.'

The French government, however, has taken several steps to address these issues and the post by the NGO also acknowledged that and wrote: "Faced with these challenges, the City of Paris, the French State and Paris regional authorities have committed to take concrete measures, such as setting up a storm water basin at Austerlitz, connecting barges and limit impermeable surfaces."

The French government, however, has taken several steps to address these issues and the post by the NGO also acknowledged that and wrote: "Faced with these challenges, the City of Paris, the French State and Paris regional authorities have committed to take concrete measures, such as setting up a storm water basin at Austerlitz, connecting barges and limit impermeable surfaces." Apart from this, rising temperatures are also raising a lot of questions over the games. The organisers are leaving no stone unturned to make sure the athletes have a fruitful time in the village. 'It's a proud moment not only for me but the whole country that India will be a part of the upcoming jury at the Olympics in 2024. It's a dream come true, I started my sports career at the age of six and&nbsp;finally, we are there, India is there.
