The two-time continental champions will have a decent task in hand going into the Asia Cup as they build momentum for the ODI World Cup. Azam’s side will play Afghanistan in a three-match ODI series before the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. The new selector's panel led by Inzamam-ul-Haq focused on key areas of the team that included a backup wicketkeeper.

There are three notable inclusions of Tayyab Tahir, Faheem Ashraf, and Saud Shakeel in the team for the Afghanistan series. The trio will hope to perform better and improve their chances to feature in the ODI World Cup squad, although that remains a hurdle too far at the moment.

In a key exclusion, the selectors have opted not to risk youngster Ihsanullah as he recovers from injury. He remains on the sidelines for the national side despite being part of the New Zealand series earlier. Shan Masood is another notable absence from the New Zealand series having lost form at the wrong time of the year.

As part of the hybrid model, Pakistan will play the curtain-raiser clash against Nepal in Pakistan before they head to Sri Lanka for the India clash on September 3. They will then return to their homeland for the Super Four clash while a possible India clash will again see them come to the Island nation in the second week of September.

The selection was the first by the new selector's panel and could likely make some harsh decisions before they make the call for the final ODI World Cup squad.&nbsp;

Pakistan&nbsp;seamer Hasan Ali has been rested and former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed left out of the squads for this month's white-ball series at home to West Indies, the country's cricket board said on Thursday.

Pakistan&nbsp;are due to host West Indies for three Twenty20s and three one-day internationals, all in Karachi, starting from Dec. 13.

Chief selector Muhammad Wasim said Hasan had been given some time off.

Pakistan&nbsp;named a 15-member squad for the T20 matches, also leaving out all-rounders Shoaib Malik and Imad Wasim.

Asif Ali, Haider Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed, Khushdil Shah and Mohammad Wasim Jr were included in the 17-member ODI squad, with Abdullah Shafique named a travelling reserve.

Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik has been recalled to the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, which is set to begin from October 17, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a statement on Saturday (October 9).&nbsp;

The 39-year-old will make his sixth appearance at the Twenty20 World Cup as he has replaced injured middle-order batsman Sohaib Maqsood, who was ruled out of the showpiece tournament after suffering a lower back injury in a domestic match earlier this year.&nbsp;

"I am sure after undergoing rehabilitation, he'll fully recover to be available for future assignments," he added.&nbsp;

"In his place and following discussions with the team management, we have decided to include Shoaib Malik in the side. I am sure Shoaib’s experience will be handy for the entire squad," he added.&nbsp;

Malik was part of the Pakistan squad that won the coveted trophy in 2009 and before that, he captained the team in the inaugural event in 2007 edition. The all-rounder missed the 2010 World Cup in the West Indies but featured in the last three editions.

The Pakistan squad will depart for Dubai on October 15 and will play warm-up matches against West Indies and South Africa before beginning their campaign with a blockbuster clash with arch-rivals India on October 24 in Dubai.

Haider has been among runs in the ACC Emerging Teams Cup in Bangladesh, Quaid-e-Azam trophy and ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2020 before having a blistering campaign for Peshawar Zalmi in Pakistan Super League 2020.

Sohail Khan, who last played a Test for Pakistan in 2016, has also be named in the extended squad after impressive performances in the domestic circuit.

Commenting on the squad, chief selector and head coach Misbah-ul-Haq said: “The selectors have picked a squad which gives us the best chance of success in England. It was a challenging process as the players have not played for an extended period of time, but nevertheless, with the month that we will have in England and the intense training we will undergo, we are confident we will get the players up to the mark to be ready for the three Tests.

“But the main focus of the selectors has been red-ball cricket, which we will play for nearly two months with the T20Is to be played at the backend of the ICC World Test Championship fixtures.

“The series against England will be challenging as our players have not played any competitive cricket since March, while the home team will come following a series against the West Indies. This means we will have to hit the ground running as soon as we land in England and make the best use of the training sessions and match practice before we enter the first Test.

“The players have also been selected with one eye on the future. I want these players to acquire as much cricket knowledge as possible from the additional backroom staff of Mushtaq Ahmed and Younis Khan that can help them post the England tour.

“Sohail Khan has been recalled to further strengthen our fast bowling department. He had two five-fors when he last played in England in 2016. The selectors also felt he bowled much better in the 2019-20 domestic season than his figures reflected.”

Commenting on the squad, chief selector and head coach Misbah-ul-Haq said: “The selectors have picked a squad which gives us the best chance of success in England. It was a challenging process as the players have not played for an extended period of time, but nevertheless, with the month that we will have in England and the intense training we will undergo, we are confident we will get the players up to the mark to be ready for the three Tests. “But the main focus of the selectors has been red-ball cricket, which we will play for nearly two months with the T20Is to be played at the backend of the ICC World Test Championship fixtures. “The series against England will be challenging as our players have not played any competitive cricket since March, while the home team will come following a series against the West Indies. This means we will have to hit the ground running as soon as we land in England and make the best use of the training sessions and match practice before we enter the first Test. “The players have also been selected with one eye on the future. I want these players to acquire as much cricket knowledge as possible from the additional backroom staff of Mushtaq Ahmed and Younis Khan that can help them post the England tour. “Sohail Khan has been recalled to further strengthen our fast bowling department. He had two five-fors when he last played in England in 2016.
