Pakistan's anti-corruption body has slapped a fresh corruption case on deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif, compounding the legal woes of the embattled Opposition leader who has frequently attacked the powerful military as well as the government.

Sharif, the 70-year-old supremo of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) who was ousted from power in 2017 by the Supreme Court on corruption charges, is currently in London for medical treatment.

The National Accountability Bureau also approved cases against Sharif's ex-personal secretary Fawad Hasan Fawad, former federal minister Ahsan Iqbal, former foreign secretary Aizaz Chaudhry and former Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief Aftab Sultan, Dawn newspaper reported.

On Thursday, a total of 11 cases were approved at NAB's Executive Board Meeting (EBM) presided over by its chairman, retired Justice Javed Iqbal.

According to the National Accountability Bureau, a fresh case was approved against Sharif along with Chaudhry, Sultan, and Fawad for ''illegally&nbsp;purchasing 73 high-security vehicles for the security of foreign dignitaries.''

They are accused of favouritism and illegal use of vehicles, causing a loss of over Rs 1,952 million to the national exchequer.

The EBM also approved a case against Ahsan Iqbal and Mohammad Ahmed, contractor/owner of private firm Ahmed and Sons, for increasing the scope of the Sports City project in Narowal from Rs 30 million to Rs 3 billion by ''abusing the authority.''

They are accused of illegally providing the funds of the federal government to provincial government projects after the 18th Amendment by using personal influence, which inflicted huge losses on the national exchequer.

The case against Iqbal was approved two days after he had said in a private TV talk show that the NAB had been investigating the Narowal Sports City case against him for the last two-and-a-half years but did not file a reference.

Sharif is already facing several cases of corruption and misuse of authority which he has declared as a result of political vendetta by the current government led by Prime Minister Khan.

The approval of fresh cases followed a recent speech by Prime Minister Khan that the Opposition would see a ''different Imran Khan'', which was interpreted as a threat to arrest more opposition leaders and court cases.

Apart from Sharif and his close aides, the NAB approved cases worth billions of rupees of alleged corruption against several officials and businessmen for causing losses to the country in different projects.

Sharif criticised the military establishment in recent speeches at gatherings of the opposition Pakistan Democratic Movement.

Days before the July 2018 general elections, Sharif was convicted in the Avenfield properties case and sentenced to 10 years in prison. His daughter Maryam was sentenced to seven years in prison for abetment and his son-in-law Captain (retd) Mohammad Safdar to one year.

In December 2018, anti-corruption court judge Arshad Malik convicted Sharif in Al-Azizia Steel Mills case and sentenced him to seven years in prison. Judge Malik was later dismissed from service over misconduct.

But there are allegations that Inspector General of Sindh was under pressure to file FIR against Nawaz Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz and her husband, and that he was kidnapped when he attempted to resist the political pressure. Pakistan Army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa meanwhile has ordered inquiry into the arrest.

The Army chief directed the Karachi Corps Commander to "immediately inquire into the circumstances" to determine the facts and file a report as soon as possible, according to a statement issued by the military's media wing.

It was the first rally held by the PDM, an alliance comprising 11 of the country`s opposition parties, since its formation last month to oust the incumbent government over its "failures in all sectors".

Throughout the day, the privately hired guards were stationed close to the office, the report said.

Back at the former leader`s residence at Avenfield, privately hired guards with vehicles bearing the sign "dog security unit" were seen during the day.

Two guards with sniffer dogs were stationed on Dunraven Street, where Avenfield House is situated. The same guards earlier stood outside the gate of their residence with the bodyguards.

On Friday afternoon, PTI activists led by Sahibzada Jahangir, the spokesperson for Prime Minister Imran Khan on trade and investment in the UK and Europe, gathered outside Stanhope Place carrying anti-PML-N posters and shouting slogans against Sharif.

Jahangir told Dawn news that he approached the office premises to protest against Sharif with "200 people" in accordance with the UK government`s Covid-19 protocols.

The Indian Army said that it has restored an old and damaged grave of a Pakistani officer in the Naugam sector of Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir. The Pakistani officer was killed in 1972 close to the fence on the Line of Control (LoC).

China, Russia and Pakistan set to join UN human rights council

Pakistan's link to a major drug haul has emerged in Maldives, with the arrest of four&nbsp;Pakistani nationals aged between 20 to 45.

The incident happened earlier this month as Maldives Police Service confiscated around 80 kg of drugs in Addu and in all arresting 14 individuals involved in the cartel. The drugs included MDMA, amphetamines, heroin and were being smuggled with cooperation with international traffickers.

It is learnt that the four&nbsp;Pakistanis were arrested in September by Maldives police and this led to the police action in early October that led to the busting the drug syndicate.&nbsp;The arrested Pakistanis are&nbsp;Ahsan-ul Hassan (30),&nbsp;Mohamed Ali Baiq (41), Mohamed Saad Warsi (22) and&nbsp;Abdulla Ali Hassan (34).

It is also understood that&nbsp;no intelligence sharing occurred between the Pakistani forces and Maldives Police on the issue but what is interesting is Pakistani media via sources claimed that the country's Anti Narcotics Force played a key role in helping. This was dismissed in the tweet by Maldives Police commissioner who mentioned "locally developed intelligence" playing a key role.&nbsp;

The Pakistani media even had images and videos, which were shared by Maldives Police on an international server during the operation. It looked like, Pakistan hurried to claim credit for the operation, something that was never officially communicated with the Maldives in the first place.&nbsp;

While Pakistan has no Navy to Navy cooperation with the Maldives as such, its envoys have been people with Naval background. Pakistan has been exclusively appointing Vice Admirals of Pakistan Navy as their High Commissioners to the Maldives.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The previous three High Commissioners of Pakistan to Maldives are Vice Admiral Syed Khawar Ali Shah, Vice Admiral Wasim Akram and the incumbent Vice Admiral Ather Mukhtar.&nbsp;While Syed Jhawar Ali Shah is now the Director General of Pakistan’s National Institute of Maritime Affairs in Islamabad, Wasim Akram returned halfway through his tenure.&nbsp;

The present High Commissioner Ather Mukhtar is a Vice-Admiral of Pakistan Navy who has specialised in Intelligence and building Bases for the Pakistan Navy. Prior to coming to the Maldives, Ather Mukhtar was Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Projects) and has also served as COMNOR, during which he was providing intelligence to Pakistan Army deployed in the Northern areas.&nbsp;Incidentally, the Northern areas of Pakistan are the hotbed of drug-trade of the Golden Crescent.

In the past, especially during the era of former Maldives President Yameen, Pakistan tried to increase cooperation with the Maldives in terms of Defense and security. Pakistan Army Chief Bajwa and Pakistan Navy Chief Abbasi had visited the country in 2018. It was the time when Yameen imposed emergency was just removed from the country, raising eyebrows domestically and internationally.&nbsp;

In 2017, the then Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had visited the country and&nbsp;$5 million were promised to Maldives health ministry of a Medical School at Dharmuvantha hospital, but that never materialised.&nbsp;

The arrested Pakistanis are Ahsan-ul Hassan (30), Mohamed Ali Baiq (41), Mohamed Saad Warsi (22) and Abdulla Ali Hassan (34). It is also understood that no intelligence sharing occurred between the Pakistani forces and Maldives Police on the issue but what is interesting is Pakistani media via sources claimed that the country's Anti Narcotics Force played a key role in helping. This was dismissed in the tweet by Maldives Police commissioner who mentioned "locally developed intelligence" playing a key role. While Syed Jhawar Ali Shah is now the Director General of Pakistan’s National Institute of Maritime Affairs in Islamabad, Wasim Akram returned halfway through his tenure. The present High Commissioner Ather Mukhtar is a Vice-Admiral of Pakistan Navy who has specialised in Intelligence and building Bases for the Pakistan Navy. Prior to coming to the Maldives, Ather Mukhtar was Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Projects) and has also served as COMNOR, during which he was providing intelligence to Pakistan Army deployed in the Northern areas. Incidentally, the Northern areas of Pakistan are the hotbed of drug-trade of the Golden Crescent. In the past, especially during the era of former Maldives President Yameen, Pakistan tried to increase cooperation with the Maldives in terms of Defense and security. Pakistan Army Chief Bajwa and Pakistan Navy Chief Abbasi had visited the country in 2018. It was the time when Yameen imposed emergency was just removed from the country, raising eyebrows domestically and internationally. In 2017, the then Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had visited the country and $5 million were promised to Maldives health ministry of a Medical School at Dharmuvantha hospital, but that never materialised.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani and Justice Aamer Farooq observed that the examination of statements of witnesses as well as the documents showed that all out efforts were made for serving the non-bailable warrants of arrest on Sharif to ensure his attendance before the court in the the Al-Azizia and Avenfield graft cases.

Nawaz Sharif alone faces sedition charges now, party leaders declared innocent

The federal cabinet of Pakistan is divided over the issue of an FIR registered against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, blaming him for criminal conspiracy over his recent "provocative speeches" that were made from London, reported Geo News.

According to sources, during a meeting of the federal cabinet on Tuesday, two federal ministers and a special assistant suggested that the FIR registered against Nawaz "should reach its logical conclusion".

"However, Prime Minister Imran Khan and other members of the cabinet remained adamant that the government was not in favour of exacting political revenge on the opposition," quoted Geo News.

The other ministers, according to sources, were of the opinion that the FIR against Nawaz should be dismissed. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against Sharif in the case of criminal conspiracy for the "provocative speeches" he made in London to "defame Pakistan`s institutions".

Earlier this month, Pakistan failed to execute a non-bailable arrest warrant against Sharif, who was granted permission to fly abroad to get medical treatment in November last year.

For nearly one month, the Pakistan government made several attempts to get Sharif`s arrest warrant signed. Last week, the IHC had slammed Sharif over his failure to appear before the court after he was granted permission to fly abroad for medical treatment.

The Prime Minister had tasked relevant authorities to bring back Sharif at the earliest. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting where the Prime Minister also issued the directive to pursue the matter vigorously.

Last month, the IHC came down heavily on the Imran Khan-led government for allowing Sharif to go abroad without informing the court and it was up to the dispensation to take steps for ensuring the latter`s return to the country.&nbsp;

Amid Pakistan Army chief's visit to PoK, people take to streets demanding release of locals

An anti-corruption court in Pakistan on Monday indicted former president Asif Ali Zardari in the Park Lane and Thatta Water Supply cases.

Zardari, 63, the co-chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), was present in the Islamabad-based court and pleaded not guilty.

During the hearing, the court indicted 19 others accused in the Park Lane case and 15 others in the Thatta water supply case.

The court last week had indicted Zardari, his sister Faryal Talpur in a mega money laundering case.

In the Park Lane case, Zardari and his son Bilawal Ali Zardari are accused of purchasing 2,460 kanals of prime property in Islamabad at extremely depreciated rates using frontmen.

In the Thatta water supply case, a private contractor was illegaly awarded project contracts. In the money laundering case, it is alleged fake accounts were used by the former president and other accused to park and launder ill-gotten wealth.

The court has rejected Zardari's plea seeking acquittal in all three cases.

The husband of the country's first woman prime minister Benazir Bhutto was arrested last year by the National Accountability Bureau and probed for months before being released in December on medical grounds.

Zardari has maintained the allegations against him are a vilification campaign by Prime Minister Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

The United Nations Human Rights Office on Tuesday expressed its concern over the increasing instances of threats of violence against journalists and human rights activists in Pakistan.

Imran Khan turns to recommending books to youth as Pakistan bears brunt of human rights violations

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has asked his party leaders to devise a legal strategy to bring back former premier Nawaz Sharif from the UK as in the absence of an extradition treaty between the two countries it would be difficult to get him extradited, according to a media report.

Presiding over the first meeting of a committee recently formed to counter the Opposition, Prime Minister Khan on Friday asked Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leaders to foil all moves of the Opposition aimed at destabilising the government and "maligning" the Army, the Dawn News reported.

The government had earlier sent a request to the British government for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader's repatriation to ensure that he faces the corruption cases pending against him in the courts.

Sharif has been living in London since November last year when he was allowed to go there for medical treatment. His recent speeches targeting the army for political interference has apparently unnerved the Imran Khan government.

A source privy to the meeting told Dawn that the prime minister was committed to bringing back Sharif from London and directed the committee members to devise a legal strategy because in the absence of an extradition treaty between Pakistan and the UK, it would become difficult to get him extradited.

The committee comprises federal ministers Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Asad Umar, Fawad Chaudhry, Shafqat Mahmood and Pervez Khattak.

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior and Accountability Shahzad Akbar had earlier said that he had written fresh letters to the British authorities for Sharif's repatriation, adding that a formal application has also been sent for his extradition.

The adviser was of the view that though both countries have no extradition treaty, wanted people could be handed over to each other under special arrangement.

On September 15, the Islamabad High Court issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Sharif who failed to surrender before it despite clear warning by the bench. The court said the onus was on the federal government to bring back Sharif from London to stand a trial in Pakistan.

During the meeting on Friday, Prime Minister Khan vowed to defeat the Opposition's designs and defend state institutions, including the Army.

"Enemies of the army are in fact enemies of Pakistan," the prime minister said.

"The opposition leaders have a problem with the Army, and that is why their corruption is being traced," he said.

"Sharif wants to bring people on to the streets while he and his children are sitting in London," he said, alleging that the former prime minister wanted institutions to protect his interests.

Sharif in a televised speech from exile in London on Thursday accused the country's powerful military of political interference, saying that the military had rigged the 2018 vote that brought Khan to power.

Sharif has had a long uneasy relationship with the military, with Thursday's tirade the latest confrontation.
