A joint operation by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Indian Navy has led to the seizure of 200 kilogrammes of Afghanistani heroin worth USD 1.45 million or Rs 1,200 crore&nbsp;from an Iranian vessel.

Talking to the press, NCB's Deputy Director General (operations) Sanjay Kumar Singh said that the agencies have also arrested six Iranian nationals and that the boat and the seized drugs were brought to Mattancherry wharf.&nbsp;

"The NCB has now seized the vessel and 200 kg of heroin. The six Iranian crew members have also been arrested under relevant sections of the NDPS Act, 1985," he said.

As per PTI, Singh reported that the investigation is still on and that the heroin was in 200 packets with markings and packing unique to Afghanistan and Pakistan-based drug cartels.

The crew tried to escape by jumping into the sea, said&nbsp;Singh. They also tried to dump the consignment.

Some drug packets reportedly carried 'Scorpion' seal markings, while others had 'dragon' markings. The drugs were packed in seven-layer waterproof packing.

"Preliminary investigation revealed that the seized drug was sourced from Afghanistan and was transported to Pakistan. This consignment was then loaded into the now-seized vessel off the Pakistan coast in a mid-sea exchange," NCB said in its statement.

The vessel set sail to Indian waters for further delivery to a Sri Lankan vessel. While efforts are being made to identify&nbsp;and intercept the Sri Lankan vessel, it is yet to be traced.

As per the NCB trafficking of Afghan heroin into India via the Arabian Sea and Indian ocean has increased over the past years.

"The southern route for trafficking of heroin from Afghanistan i.e., from Afghanistan to Makran coast of Iran and Pakistan and then onwards to various countries in the Indian Ocean Region, including India, has gained prominence over the last few years."

According to an investigation conducted by Pakistan's Samaa News in 2018, crystal meth has become common among college students in the campuses of Peshawar because of its ability to keep a person awake for 24-48 hours. Many students have been abusing the drug to get through examinations. 
 
How Crystal meth works 
 
The Methamphetamine drug can be smoked, snorted, injected, or ingested orally. When it's used, a chemical called dopamine floods the parts of the brain that regulate feelings of ecstasy. 
 
Using meth floods the brain with dopamine to the extent that, at that moment, no other feeling can match the euphoria you experience. 
 
Use of this drug can cause irreversible harmful effects such as increased heart rate and blood pressure; damaged blood vessels in the brain that can cause strokes or an irregular heartbeat that can, in turn, cause cardiovascular collapse or death; and liver, kidney and lung damage.

Pakistan’s youth hooked to crystal meth, the country sees rise in addiction

Pakistan's link to a major drug haul has emerged in Maldives, with the arrest of four&nbsp;Pakistani nationals aged between 20 to 45.

The incident happened earlier this month as Maldives Police Service confiscated around 80 kg of drugs in Addu and in all arresting 14 individuals involved in the cartel. The drugs included MDMA, amphetamines, heroin and were being smuggled with cooperation with international traffickers.

It is learnt that the four&nbsp;Pakistanis were arrested in September by Maldives police and this led to the police action in early October that led to the busting the drug syndicate.&nbsp;The arrested Pakistanis are&nbsp;Ahsan-ul Hassan (30),&nbsp;Mohamed Ali Baiq (41), Mohamed Saad Warsi (22) and&nbsp;Abdulla Ali Hassan (34).

It is also understood that&nbsp;no intelligence sharing occurred between the Pakistani forces and Maldives Police on the issue but what is interesting is Pakistani media via sources claimed that the country's Anti Narcotics Force played a key role in helping. This was dismissed in the tweet by Maldives Police commissioner who mentioned "locally developed intelligence" playing a key role.&nbsp;

Commissioner of Maldives police service, Mohamed Hameed, in a tweet said,"The operation was carried out solely on locally developed intelligence and policing work. We will be engaging with our international partners as the investigation progresses."

While Pakistan has no Navy to Navy cooperation with the Maldives as such, its envoys have been people with Naval background. Pakistan has been exclusively appointing Vice Admirals of Pakistan Navy as their High Commissioners to the Maldives.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The previous three High Commissioners of Pakistan to Maldives are Vice Admiral Syed Khawar Ali Shah, Vice Admiral Wasim Akram and the incumbent Vice Admiral Ather Mukhtar.&nbsp;While Syed Jhawar Ali Shah is now the Director General of Pakistan’s National Institute of Maritime Affairs in Islamabad, Wasim Akram returned halfway through his tenure.&nbsp;

The present High Commissioner Ather Mukhtar is a Vice-Admiral of Pakistan Navy who has specialised in Intelligence and building Bases for the Pakistan Navy. Prior to coming to the Maldives, Ather Mukhtar was Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Projects) and has also served as COMNOR, during which he was providing intelligence to Pakistan Army deployed in the Northern areas.&nbsp;Incidentally, the Northern areas of Pakistan are the hotbed of drug-trade of the Golden Crescent.

In the past, especially during the era of former Maldives President Yameen, Pakistan tried to increase cooperation with the Maldives in terms of Defense and security. Pakistan Army Chief Bajwa and Pakistan Navy Chief Abbasi had visited the country in 2018. It was the time when Yameen imposed emergency was just removed from the country, raising eyebrows domestically and internationally.&nbsp;

In 2017, the then Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had visited the country and&nbsp;$5 million were promised to Maldives health ministry of a Medical School at Dharmuvantha hospital, but that never materialised.&nbsp;
