India, as the current chair of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), has extended invitations to Pakistan and China to attend several ministerial meetings of the grouping as per standard protocol. These include the SCO Defence Ministers meeting scheduled for 27th April in Delhi, as well as the National Security Advisors meeting set for March 29. Invite has been dished out for home ministers meet, even as New Delhi is in the process of extending the invite for other key meetings.

Pakistan had virtually attended the SCO chief justice meeting hosted by Delhi, represented by Justice Munib Akhtar of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, as Pakistan Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial skipped the meeting. The level of Pakistan's presence in the upcoming SCO meetings is now up to them to decide.

The SCO is made up of eight member countries, namely Russia, India, China, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, covering over 60% of the Eurasian landmass, 40% of the world population, and 30% of the global GDP. The organisation aims to promote economic, political, and military cooperation among its members, and with Iran becoming a full-fledged member under Indian Presidency, the SCO's strategic significance has grown even more.

India will hold various meetings of the grouping this year, including the summit on June 25, and the foreign ministers meeting on 4-5 May in Goa, for which invitations have already been sent. In July, Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi is expected to attend the summit in Delhi as his country becomes a member of the mega grouping.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Sunday called off his mega election rally for the second time after the interim Punjab government imposed Section 144, banning public gatherings in the provincial capital.

Khan took to Twitter to inform his supporters about the change in plan and said the rally had been postponed till Monday.

"It seems again Sec 144 has been imposed illegally solely on PTI election campaign as all other public activities are ongoing in Lahore. Only Zaman Park has been surrounded by containers & heavy police contingent. Urging his followers to not 'fall into the trap', Khan added, "Hence, we have postponed rally till tomorrow". Notably, Khan first attempted to take out his rally on March 8 in the eastern city of Lahore but the death of a party worker and the heavy-handedness of the authorities meant that he had to cancel the show.

Pakistan: Ex-PM Imran Khan postpones election rally for second time

Ever since the former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan was ousted from power in a no-confidence motion, the political slugfest has seen some high-end drama in the South Asian nation. Khan has been on the radar of the caretaker Punjab government which had imposed Section 144 in Lahore attributing it to a Pakistan Super League match in the Qaddafi Stadium and a marathon race in the city.

The former Pakistani PM was vying to hold out the rally for last two days. However, his efforts were stomped on by the Election Commission or the Lahore High Court who denied the relief to Imran-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

After a twin failure, Imran was finally given a nod to take out the rally. However, the interim Punjab government gave the relaxation while cautioning that the rally carries “high-security risk due to the general and specific threats against political gatherings and previous instance of attack on the ex-prime minister."

Not just this, the nod was given after an undertaking from the organizer to the “effect that in case of any untoward incident he shall be held responsible”. This ensued against the backdrop of last year's assassination attempt on Imran Khan which wounded him and killed one of his supporters. A gunman had opened fire at a campaign truck carrying Khan.

But this time, Imran Khan was in a bulletproof vehicle when he set off for the rally which kicked off from Zaman Park on Monday. Upon reaching Data Darbar, Imran addressed his supporters from inside his vehicle. He announced that a power show will be held at Minar-i-Pakistan in Lahore at 2pm. “This rally will be in the day and it will be my sixth in Minar-i-Pakistan in the last 12 years,” he added.

Pakistan's Foreign Minister, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, urged Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) to lift its restrictions on women and girls in the nation. Bhutto Zardari said that the IEA's treatment of women and girls is not typical in the Muslim world.

Taliban banned women, including students and female professors, from colleges. This came over a year after the Taliban forbade girls from attending secondary schools.

Bhutto Zardari was speaking at a conference on the outcome of the Women in Islam Conference this week in New York.

“There is no other country on the planet, Muslim or otherwise, that condones depriving women and girls from the right to education,” he said, adding “There is no space for groups such as those in Afghanistan or anywhere else to claim that Islam justifies their actions."

Bhutto Zardari also said that the IEA was not living up to its commitment, which makes it tough for Pakistan to advocate for Afghanistan.

“It puts us in a very difficult situation to advocate for some of the things that the people of Afghanistan need in the form of humanitarian aid, the unfreezing of their funds, the functioning of their economy, etc.” he said.

In addition, Bhutto Zardari said that the IEA was not upholding its obligations, which made it difficult for Pakistan to support Kabul. The conference at the UN was presided over by Zardari, who earlier in the week told delegates that he disagrees with the widespread belief that Islam oppresses women.

“Islam was the first religion to give rights to women,” he declared adding that “Islam forbids injustice against women.”

There are other underlying difficulties between the two nations that are still challenging to settle. Clashes between their security forces have been brought on by Kabul's persistent unwillingness to recognise the Durand Line as the international boundary between Pakistan and Afghanistan. This has continued to be a major source of tension that undermine trust and fosters animosity.

He barely escaped Pakistan with his life after angering its powerful military with his journalism. Now his story has become a comic book.

Taha Siddiqui's therapist told him not to dwell on the attempted kidnapping he suffered five years ago, or he would never escape his trauma.

"Clearly, I didn't listen to her at all," said Siddiqui with a smile.

He was speaking to AFP in his Paris bar, The Dissident Club, which he opened in 2020 as a refuge for exiles like himself.

It shares its name with his new autobiographical comic book -- co-authored with cartoonist Hubert Maury who was previously a French diplomat in Pakistan -- which is released on Wednesday in France and soon in other languages.

It opens with the moment in January 2018 when members of Pakistan's military pulled him from a taxi in broad daylight and shoved him into another car. Detention, torture and death were very real possibilities.

Two strokes of luck saved Siddiqui -- convincing the man holding his neck to release him, saying he would go quietly, and noticing that the passenger door was unlocked.

He leapt from the moving car, ran down the busy highway and managed to alert his media friends, swiftly organising a press conference about the attack in order to buy time.

Only after escaping to Paris did he discover he was on the military's "kill list" and could never return.

The road to atheism

The graphic novel goes beyond this incident to explain the spread of extremism and war in the region through the story of his religiously conservative upbringing in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

"It will definitely piss off my father. I hope he won't see it."

Not that they have a good relationship. His father's response to the attempted kidnapping was to say he was being punished by God for not praying enough.

It was a classic Romeo-and-Juliet experience that challenged Siddiqui's own faith, after his family opposed his marriage to a Shia girl he met at university. The divide between the Sunni and Shia branches of Islam is a fraught and often violent faultline in Pakistan.

"That really triggered this thing in me that there's something wrong with the way we live," said Siddiqui, who is now a full-blown atheist.

'No regrets'

The attempted kidnapping put an end to a successful career. He had worked with many international media and won the prestigious Albert Londres prize for a piece on the Taliban banning polio vaccines.

His fearless criticism of the powerful Pakistani military made him a target, particularly a front-page story for the New York Times exposing their secret prisons.

"It was pretty crazy," said Maury, his co-author. "But that's what makes it such an interesting story.

"I find it impressive and remarkable. He risked not just his life but exile as well and cutting ties with his family."

Siddiqui said he has no regrets: "I chose this life but I didn't choose (the military's) reaction. That's on them, not me.

"Sometimes I'm sad. I really believed in the country at one time in my life but now less and less. Pakistan is a very dysfunctional country."

Siddiqui is already planning a follow-up that looks at the lives of other exiles.

"I wanted to take control because when I was attacked I lost control," he said.

Even his therapist is convinced, having recently visited the bar for a talk on exile and mental health.

"She said I was doing well and getting purpose out of what happened to me," he said. "I was really happy."

Many senior state officials have allegedly taken home expensive presents that they receive from foreign dignitaries by paying a little amount and later selling them in the open market for a big premium, and keeping the profit.

Defying orders, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan has decided to take out another political rally in the eastern city of Lahore, a couple of days after the death of a party worker forced him to stop the rally. "I will lead the election rally to show them that we are not domesticated animals. I have decided that I will fight against the corrupt system and looters of national wealth till the last drop of my blood,” said Khan in a television address and urged the masses to stand beside him in the rally. While Khan plans to organise the mega rally, the interim government in Punjab has imposed Section 144, banning public gatherings. According to local media reports, one PTI worker was killed after police launched a crackdown, following the violation of Section 144 by Khan's supporters. Water cannons and tear gas canisters were fired as the police arrested more than 40 PTI workers for defying the public gathering ban. “I called off the long march immediately after the police attack on May 25 last year and called off March 8 election rally merely hours after the police resorted to torture and tear-gas shelling on political workers,” added Khan in his speech. Ever since losing his PM chair to Shehbaz Sharif last year, he has opened a front against not only the government but also the military institutions. However, the Shehbaz Sharif government, already feeling the pressure for trying to resurrect a stuttering economy has upped the ante against Khan. Earlier this week, media regulator Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) banned television channels from carrying any snippets of Khan's speeches. Pakistan cancels military parade over political unrest, economic instability

Pakistan's former spymaster, retired Lieutenant General Faiz Hamid is accused of engaging in corruption, the country's interior minister Rana Sanaullah said. Amid the revelation, Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) leader Maryam Nawaz Sharif called for the retired Inter-Services and Intelligence (ISI) chief's "court martial" over his alleged role in bringing down her father and Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's government.

In Pakistan, for retired army persons to be court-martialed, they must be reinstated into the service, following which a court-martial inquiry can begin against them.
