Padma Awards 2022: Gen. Bipin Rawat among those honoured with one of India's highest civilian honours

As the Ministry of Home Affairs released its list of Padma award winners on Tuesday, under the art category, veteran actors Victor Banerjee, Sowcar Janaki and filmmaker Chandraprakash Dwivedi have been honoured for their stellar work. 
 
Victor was honoured with the Padma Bhushan award for his work spanning almost five decades. He has won a National Award for his performance in Satyajit Ray's 'Ghare Baire'. 
 
Sowcar, who will be awarded the Padma Shri, has acted in over 450 films across languages like Tamil, Kannada, and Telugu. Her work includes films like, 'Panam Padaithavan', 'Thaikku Thalaimagan', among others. 
 
Chandraprakash, best known for directing the 1991 series, 'Chanakya', was also among the Padma Shri winners.&nbsp; 
His other works include 'Mohalla Assi', 'Pinjar' and 'Z Plus'. He is also directing Akshay Kumar's upcoming film 'Prithviraj'. 
 
The Padma Awards are presented in three categories: Padma Vibhushan (for exceptional and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan (distinguished service of higher-order) and Padma Shri (distinguished service). 
 
The award seeks to recognise achievements in all fields of activities or disciplines where an element of public service is involved.&nbsp;

On the eve of Republic Day, India's first Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Kalyan Singh, have been awarded the Padma Vibhushan posthumously.&nbsp;

Padma Awards, which are among the country's highest civilian honours, are divided into three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri.

Art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, and other disciplines/fields of activity are among those recognised.&nbsp; 
 
The President of India bestows these honours at ceremonial festivities held at Rashtrapati Bhawan every year, generally in March or April.

According to the list, the President has approved the conferment of 128 Padma Awards, including 2 pair cases (the award is counted as one in a dual case).

There are four Padma Vibhushans, 17 Padma Bhushans, and 107 Padma Shris on the list.

Women account for 34 of the awardees, with 10 foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI and 13 posthumous awardees rounding out the list.&nbsp;

General Bipin Rawat, India's first Chief of Defence Staff, died in a helicopter crash in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu.

On December 8, he and his wife, Madhulika, as well as 12 other defence personnel, were killed in a tragic tragedy.

The 63-year-old general, who is known for his bravery, was also the army leader from 2016 to 2019.

He was a strong supporter of initiatives in Jammu and Kashmir to combat militancy and cross-border terrorism.

General Rawat was born in Pauri, Uttrakhand, and attended the National Defence Academy.

In December 1978, he was commissioned into the 11 Gorkha Rifles.&nbsp;
