<p>Researchers from the PDRs4All programme published a new study this week on the Orion nebula, a well-studied region of space thought to be a hotbed for new star formation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The programme included researchers from numerous universities, including Western University in the United States.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a press release, Western University said that the new images honed in on a specific part of the nebula known as the "Orion Bar", a "sharp, diagonal, ridge-like feature of gas and dust".&nbsp;</p>

<p>"So far, we have explored only a tiny fraction of the data, and this has already resulted in several surprising and major discoveries," the statement added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Peeters said that the new images "have such an incredible detail that we will be scrutinising them for many years to come".&nbsp;</p>

<p>With the images, the JWST helped the researchers not only examine the Orion Bar's structure for the first time but also to identify how its chemical composition fluctuates throughout it.&nbsp;<br />

<p>The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Saturday (Feb 10) shared a stunning three-dimensional view of the Orion Nebula, which is one of the brightest nebulae, to mark the occasion of Chinese New Year, a festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Orion Nebula is visible to the naked eye in the night sky with an apparent magnitude of 4.0 and the 3-D view was created using data from the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) mission, which is a joint programme between NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). SOFIA is a telescope capable of making observations from onboard an aeroplane.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the media posted by NASA, the Orion Nebula appears to be in the shape of a dragon. The nebula has a blue centre, with red wispy fragments on the outer detail.⁣ &nbsp;</p>

<p>In an Instagram post, NASA wrote, "Welcome to the year of the Dragon. In this three-dimensional view of the Orion Nebula – Earth's closest star-formation nursery – was created using data from the SOFIA mission."&nbsp;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Along with the stars, brown dwarfs – which are too small in size for nuclear fusion to start at their cores and become stars – were spotted by the scientists. The mass of brown dwarfs is below 7 per cent of the mass of the sun.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">While hunting for other low-mass isolated objects, the astronomers discovered pairs of planet-like objects, which had masses between 0.6 and 13 times the mass of Jupiter, and appeared to defy a few fundamental astronomical theories. They were dubbed by the scientists as Jupiter Mass Binary Objects or JuMBOs.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">“Although some of them are more massive than the planet Jupiter, they will be roughly the same size and only slightly larger,” stated Pearson, a European Space Agency research fellow at the European Space Research and Technology Centre in the Netherlands.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Around 40 pairs of JuMBOs and two triple systems were found by the astronomers, all on wide orbits.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">“Scientists have been working on theories and models of star and planet formation for decades, but none of them have ever predicted that we would find pairs of super low mass objects floating alone in space — and we’re seeing lots of them,” said Pearson.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p>James Webb Space Telescope has released a stunning photo of another spectacle of the universe. Astronomers are awestruck after seeing the first images of the Orion Nebula that were released by an international research team on Monday (September 12).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Orion Nebula is approximately 1,344 light years away from earth. It is a diffuse nebula situated in the Milky Way, south of Orion's Belt in the constellation of Orion. It is one of the brightest nebulae and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Orion Nebula is in a similar setting in which our own solar system was birthed more than 4.5 billion years ago. Its age is over three million years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hence, the observation is significant as it paves the way to understanding the entire cycle of star birth.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the latest observation, astronomers want to probe the region to better understand what happened during the first million years of our planetary evolution.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Images of the Orion Nebula were obtained as part of the Early Release Science programme. It involved more than 100 scientists in 18 countries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Western University astrophysicist Els Peeters said in a statement: "We are blown away by the breathtaking images of the Orion Nebula. These new observations allow us to better understand how massive stars transform the gas and dust cloud in which they are born."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Previously for the Hubble Space Telescope, it was difficult to observe nebulas with visible light telescopes as they are obscured by large amounts of dust. But Webb has made it possible.&nbsp;</p>

<p>James Webb is the world's largest and most complex space science telescope ever built. Edwin Bergin, University of Michigan chair of astronomy and a member of the international research team said, "We hope to gain understanding about the entire cycle of star birth."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In this image we are looking at this cycle where the first generation of stars is essentially irradiating the material for the next generation. The incredible structures we observe will detail how the feedback cycle of stellar birth occurs in our galaxy and beyond," Bergin added.&nbsp;</p>
