International police have broken up a huge drug-smuggling operation preventing millions of ecstasy pills flooding into Australia, officials said Friday, as a minister claimed the drugs were timed to target holidaying teens.

The joint Dutch-Australian operation seized $200 million worth of MDMA, the key ingredient in ecstasy, in the Netherlands and Belgium and led to charges against 11 people, including one Australian woman, officials said.

"That is one of the most significant operations in the history of the collaboration between all of our agencies," said Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, who leads Australia's police and security agencies.

Following a months-long investigation, some 700 kilograms of crystalline MDMA were intercepted in August in the Dutch port of Rotterdam, the Australian Federal Police said.

Dutch police then raided 15 locations in the Netherlands and Belgium on November 5, uncovering two hidden laboratories, additional stashes of MDMA and 50 tonnes of precursor chemicals, police said.

"We believe that this criminal network was involved and able to produce many thousands of kilos of MDMA, equivalent to tens of millions of pills, a large part of which was likely destined for Australia," said Andy Kraag, assistant commissioner of the Dutch National Criminal Investigations Division.

Kraag told a press conference in Brisbane the seized MDMA "could be used for more than 10 million ecstasy pills."

Dutton said the timing of the drug operation indicated the smugglers were hoping to specifically target "schoolies week," when thousands of high school students party along Queensland beaches beginning this weekend.

"The timing would have meant that these pills are hitting the street and specifically here in Queensland at a time just before schoolies," he said.

He celebrated the success of the operation, and added, "people who tell you that we are losing the fight and the war against drugs don't know what they are talking about."

Kraag said those arrested in Europe included two "high-value targets" of a significant Dutch drug-running network and that further arrests were expected.

"We want to target the complete chain", he said.

Doctors at Chennai’s Saveetha Dental College, Institute of Medical and Technical Science were in for a shock as they extracted 526 teeth from a 200gram non-cancerous tumour that was surgically removed from the lower-right jaw of their 7-year-old patient Ravindran.

According to the doctors, this is the maximum number of teeth extracted from a patient and the hospital has applied for a place the Guinness and Limca Book of Records.

Over four years ago, Prabhu and Rajakumari had taken their then 3-year old son Ravindran for a medical checkup for to his swollen jaw. As the doctors at the Government Hospital were said to have not diagnosed the condition, the parents left it unattended as the boy did not seem to face any pain or discomfort and was unable to cooperate with the medical examination.

This year, as the swelling in the jaw, had increased the parents got Ravindran medically examined by the Doctors at Chennai’s Saveetha Dental College, Institute of Medical and Technical Science.

Doctors of Saveetha Dental College with the 7-year old patient Ravindran and his parents at the media interaction.

Doctors had observed that despite the boy being seven years old his permanent tooth had not erupted. An X-Ray and CT Scan revealed that a lot of small rudimentary tooth in the lower-right jaw. The Doctors then decided to perform surgery.

Dr Senthilnathan, Professor, Dept of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery said, “Under general anaesthesia, we removed a sack-like, non-cancerous tumour that weighed about 200 grams and measured 4cm wide and 3.5cm tall. In medical terms, this condition is referred to as Compound Composite Odontone. Our surgical procedure took over an hour and a half”.

He added that, if the patient were to be an adult, the jaw would have to be surgically reconstructed post the surgery, but in this case, an operative procedure called ‘Conservative management’ was employed to ensure that the jaw remained intact.

While the surgery was completed in less than two hours, the Pathologists that examined the tumour post its removal had to do their precise, delicate work for nearly five hours to extract the tooth from the tumour.

“Normally for such a big tumour we perform a bread-loaf section to vertically slice and study the specimen, but in this case, we decided to cut it open like a bag. As we cut it open we spotted multiple teeth, and this continued even as we went deeper and more pearls were emerging. Every bit of tissue was a tooth, and tissue had the enamel of the tooth, said Dr Pratibha Ramani, Professor and Head, Dept of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Speaking on the probable causes of the tumour, Doctors said, “It is usually believed that it is genetic, but the siblings of the boy do not have this condition. It could be from radiation, chemical or other environmental influences”. Quoting from an ongoing study the doctors also mentioned that mobile phone radiation could also be a minor factor among others, in causing such disorders.

“Right side lower was only affected and Permanent tooth might not grow there, whereas the growth in all other regions of the jaw is normal. When the boy turns 16, we might have to replace some teeth in the lower right jaw with implants. However, there is no chance of relapse of this tumour”, elaborated the Doctors on the way ahead for the boy.

Speaking to reporters, the boy’s parents said, “We are very happy that he is fine now, initially we were really worried that we had to take a CT scan for something like a jaw swelling and we were also in a dilemma about the course of treatment.”

Responding to queries on the possible use of Local Anesthesia instead of General Anesthesia, Doctors said, “Local anaesthetic is for single tooth removal, whereas a Tumor involves the jaw and we are removing an anatomical part of the body. If the tumour is less than 1cm in size, then we could use a local anaesthetic, but clearly, we were dealing with a bigger tumour.”

Doctors also emphasized the need for counselling the young patient and his parents on an oral, maxillofacial surgical procedure. They said that counselling is important to make the young child and the parents understand the significance of the course of treatment and are mentally prepared for it.

While the surgery was performed on July 11th, the boy had completely recovered within three days and there are no scars on his face as the surgery was performed completely in the jaw, Doctors added.

The law enforcement agencies of Pakistan have arrested at least nine suspects in connection with the terrorist attack that killed 11 people at a hostel inside the Directorate of Agriculture Extension on University Road in Peshawar on Friday.

The Dawn quoted police sources as saying that the police has begun investigating yesterday's attack on the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) and a first investigation report (FIR) was registered against unknown persons.

The suspects were arrested during a pre-dawn search operation carried out on the outskirts of Peshawar. A team comprised of large number of police and other security forces conducted raids in Badhber, Telaband and other areas outside the provincial capital.

Reportedly, different kind of weapons were recovered from the suspects. Yesterday, all the terrorists were neutralized by the security forces after launching an operation.

The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan has claimed responsibility for the attack. According to reports, a police official said that the attackers' first target was the security guard of the premises, following which they made their way inside towards the students' hostel.

"They could have wreaked havoc but the police and army successfully neutralised the threat," he added. University Road, the major artery of the city, was closed down for traffic after the attack.

The injured were shifted to Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH), located next to the directorate.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan condemned the terrorist attack in a tweet."Saddened by condemnable terrorist attack in Peshawar this morning. My prayers to the victims and their families. Commend the rapid response of KP police and army that helped in containing damage and concluding the operation," Imran tweeted.

Some people sit and wait for miracles, while others make them happen. Graham Smith, an engineer from England, is one such individual.

The Lancashire native had been left with a suture in his abdomen after a bowel operation that he underwent 15 years ago. Unfortunately, for the longest time, he didn’t notice the stiches. In fact, it was in 2011 that he identified and then complained about the stitches protruding out of his body.

However, when he raised the issue with the hospital, he was put on a waiting list and then had two scheduled operations cancelled.

The 8-inch-long (20 cm) surgical stitches made it difficult for him to walk, often leaving him in severe pain. In an interview to the BBC, Graham said, “I was reckless with the surgery but the pain made me desperate. I could see the stitches protruding out of my body.”

Finally, he decided to devise his own set of DIY surgery tools, and went ahead to operate on himself. The tools he developed were adapted from titanium instruments, given to him by a friend, who works as dentist.

Given that he was undoing a surgeon’s knot, Graham had to be extra careful. “I needed to modify them to undo some of the stitches. I couldn’t have just cut it off as it might have retracted and I would have been in real trouble. I had to undo them one by one,” he told the BBC.

“There was a bit of blood and it stung a bit, but I was confident in what I was doing,” he recalled, adding that post the surgery, he now feels like a new man.

Upon learning of Graham’s case, the hospital trust has advised patients to stick to clinical advice. That’s something that Graham also concurs with: “Anything could have gone wrong. Don’t try this at home.”
