<p>Two Chinese swimmers, including one scheduled to compete at the Paris Olympics, tested positive in a doping control in 2022 but were cleared by Chinese authorities, the New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing anonymous sources.</p>

<p>The latest report follows a major dispute in the sport around the case of 23 Chinese swimmers who tested positive for trimetazidine (TMZ) at a domestic competition in late 2020 and early 2021 ahead of the Tokyo Games. The swimmers were cleared,&nbsp;with food contamination being given as the explanation for the positive tests.</p>

<p>The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has accused the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) of a cover-up in an increasingly bitter dispute.</p>

<p>WADA has claimed that USADA's criticism is politically motivated.</p>

<p>In the new report, the New York Times said that Chinese authorities concluded that a steroid had been accidentally ingested when the two swimmers ate hamburgers in Beijing, with only 'trace amounts' being detected, which they said was consistent with food contamination rather than doping.</p>

<p>The paper said that one of the swimmers had also been part of the previously reported case of the 23 swimmers.</p>

<p>In a statement in response to the article, WADA said that the latest case was part of a "wider series of cases" also including a shooter and a BMX rider, who all tested positive for metandienone, in late 2022 and early 2023.</p>

<p>"Upon notification, the athletes were all immediately provisionally suspended, pending investigation and remained so until late 2023 when the investigation concluded. Therefore, in the case of the two swimmers, they were suspended for more than one year," the organisation said.</p>

<p>WADA said that the provisional suspension, imposed on November 3rd 2022 was "with the view to asserting a four-year period of ineligibility before a CHINADA anti-doping tribunal."</p>

<p>But when the similar cases of the shooter and the BMX rider, neither of which are part of the Paris Olympics, emerged, CHINADA conducted an investigation into possible meat contamination.</p>

<p>"The investigation by CHINADA included the testing of hundreds of meat samples from various sources, with dozens revealing positive results for metandienone," WADA said.</p>

<p>The agency added that CHINADA had also analyzed supplements used by the athletes and conducted hair tests -- which were negative.</p>

<p>Both swimmers provided negative doping control samples in the days before and after the positive result, added WADA.</p>

<p>"Following its investigation, CHINADA concluded that the four cases were most likely linked to meat contamination and, in late 2023, closed the cases without asserting a violation, with the athletes having remained provisionally suspended throughout that time," the statement said.</p>

<p>WADA said it "thoroughly" reviewed the cases and decided not to challenge CHINADA's ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).</p>

<p>In 2024 WADA said it launched an investigation to "assess the circumstances, scale and risk of meat contamination with metandienone in China and other countries" which remains ongoing.</p>

<p>The Times had reported that a member of the International Testing Agency (ITA), who reviewed the case, argued that World Aquatics should have appealed the Chinese decision to clear the swimmers.</p>

<p>A spokesperson for World Aquatics said: "It would not be appropriate for World Aquatics to comment on this case in detail, but World Aquatics can confirm that it never received any recommendation from the ITA to appeal&nbsp;the&nbsp;case."</p>

<p>The paper cited the ITA as denying they had made such a recommendation.</p>

<p>WADA repeated their stance that politics was at play in the criticism of their approach to the Chinese cases.</p>

<p>"The politicisation of Chinese swimming continues with this latest attempt by the media in the United States to imply wrongdoing on the part of WADA and the broader anti-doping community," they said.</p>

The tally was doubled on Tuesday when she clinched another bronze&nbsp;in the team’s event as the largest democracy in the world continues its tradition of bagging at least one medal at the Summer Olympics since 1996. In fact, since 1928, India has failed to win a medal at the Summer Olympics on only four occasions (1976, 1984, 1988 and 1992). While India continues to rise, neighbours, Pakistan have endured tough luck in the quadrennial event.</p>

<p>At the time of writing, India had bagged its 37th medal at the Olympics (all in Summer Olympics) while Pakistan is on a run of 32 years without a medal at the quadrennial event. The nation has not won an Olympic medal since the 1992 Barcelona Games when their men’s field hockey team beat the Netherlands for the bronze medal. But hardly anyone associated with the nation would have expected the bronze medal to be the country’s last for a long time.</p>

<p>Breaking down the numbers, Pakistan has won only 10 medals at the Olympics (all in Summer Games). Like India, they gained freedom in 1947 and had a great start to their Olympic career having won medals from 1956 until 1976 with all coming in field hockey. <p>Despite no success at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, Pakistan returned to the podium in 1984 and clinched its third and to date last gold medal when they yet again conquered field hockey. <p>The French authorities have arrested a far-left extremist in connection to the sabotage attack on the country's high-speed rail network on the day of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony last week.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Interior Minister&nbsp;Gerald Darmanin informed about the arrest on Monday (Jul 29), adding that the government suspects the role of far-left groups behind the coordinated attack.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We have identified the profiles of several people.&nbsp;This is the traditional type of action of the ultra-left," Darmanin told a French news channel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, the arrest comes on the same day as when optic&nbsp;fibre networks were sabotaged in six areas across France.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In recent years, France has witnessed a rise in attacks by Islamist militants but authorities are equally worried about the rise of far-left and anarchist militants who usually protest against the state and its approval of capitalism.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On the other hand, Manu’s teammate, Rhythm ended up in the 15th spot with a total of 573-14x points and failed to make it into the final round.</p>

<p>Cheema (18th spot with 574-17x points) and Sarabjot (9th spot with 577-16x points) failed to make it to the final eight who qualified for the medal round.</p>
