The world's oldest woman, Spain's Maria Branyas Morera, who was born in the United States and lived through two world wars, died Tuesday at the age of 117.

Maria Branyas, known to be the world’s oldest person, passed away at a Spanish nursing home at the age of 117, shared her family on her X account. The nursing home also confirmed her demise.

“Maria Branyas has left us. She has died as she wanted: in her sleep, peacefully and without pain,” Branyas’ X account said.

Branyas, who was born in the United States, lived through two world wars, the Spanish Civil War, the 1918 flu pandemic, and the COVID pandemic.

Branyas had suspected that her demise was going to take place on Monday, saying, “I feel weak. The time is coming. Don’t cry, I don’t like tears… You know me, wherever I go, I will be happy.”

The X account of Branyas is managed by her daughter.

She reached the age of 117, marking herself as the world’s oldest person, according to the Guinness World Records in 2023.

Born in San Francisco, California in 1907, she later relocated to the northeastern region of Catalonia with her Spanish family at the age of seven.

She spent the rest of her life living through major events in the world, like the 1936–39 Civil War, two world wars, and two pandemics: the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic and the 2020–2021 COVID-19 pandemic.

She got married in 1931 to a doctor, Joan Moret, with whom she had three children.

Her husband died in 1976. After that, her son met with a tractor accident, which became the reason for his death at the age of 86, according to the Guinness World Records website.

Scientists studied the reason for her long life, which she attributed to luck, good genetics, and “order, tranquillity, good connections with family and friends, contact with nature, emotional stability, no worries, no regrets, lots of positivity, and staying away from toxic people,” Guinness stated.

Her youngest daughter, Rosa Moret, once gave a statement on her mother’s long life: “She has never gone to the hospital, she has never broken any bones, she is fine, she has no pain,” Moret told regional Catalan television in 2023.

When she reached the age of 117, Branyas became the 12th oldest verified person in history. French woman Jeanne Calment, who lived for 122 years and 164 days, is the oldest person to have ever lived.

Is the secret out?

On being honoured the title of being the oldest person on the planet, the nun received letters from Pope Francis and the recently re-elected French President Emmanuel Macron congratulating her. Macron also happens to be the 18th French president to be elected in her lifetime.

Even the mayor of the French city Toulon, the place where has been living for over a decade now said that Sister André is "an object of pride and an example to the whole world"

The 118-year-old is also the world's oldest COVID-19 survivor. After the Spanish flu in 1918, this is the second pandemic she witnessed.

Speaking to a local news website, George said,&nbsp;&quot;It&#39;s not true that you have to live healthy to grow old. I have eaten and drank what I wanted throughout my life. I was a big smoker until I reached my forties, but I still have to have a glass of wine every day. It thins out the blood. But I make sure not to drink too much.&quot;

George gave up smoking in 1953 but still drinks a glass of wine every day.&nbsp;

He added that positivity in life goes a long way and said, &quot;I&#39;ve always had a good mood. One must almost have to live, especially in my age. Once upon a time I had a neighbor who was always mad and angry, so I do not want it. If so, you&#39;re angry with life too.&rdquo;

&quot;I have not thought so much about it. I know that someone who was older than me died a few days ago, I have been told. But I do not want to think so much about this record. That&#39;s no good thought,&quot; Nygaard added.

George was born in 1910 in North Dakota after his father emigrated from Norway in 1894.

He experienced both world wars. Speaking about the First World War, George recalled some of his earliest memories, &quot;I remember some episodes from that war as well. Among other things, I remember that my dad gave away one of our horses to the army, the American army.&rdquo;

He witnessed the Second World War firsthand, as was stationed in Hawaii during his service in the US Navy.

Following the death of Torbjorn Ovrebo last week, Nygaard officially became Norway&#39;s oldest man at the age of 107. He will celebrate his 108th birthday on January 12.

Marie Antoinette Andersen is currently Norway&#39;s oldest person, having turned 108 on September 29.
