While speaking to Sky News, Foreign Secretary James Cleverly on Sunday said that the health secretary is willing to hold talks with the unions about how the performance and working conditions of NHS can be improved and not about the pay demand.

He said, “Of course, the health secretary wants to talk to the profession about how we can make the job better, how we can improve the NHS performance for everybody. But ultimately pay is decided by an independent pay body.”

Wes Streeting of the Labour party called the ministers “irresponsible”, saying they are looking to blame the striking staff for the NHSa crisis and not finding a solution.

RCN general secretary Pat Cullen, over the weekend, had made the offer to "press pause" on the strikes if serious talks can be held with Health Secretary Steve Barclay.

For the first time in 106 years of the union's history, UK nurses will be walking out on a strike this week, which they insist is the "last resort” to press for their pay demands.

The one-day stoppage will be held by the Royal College of Nursing's (RCN) 100,000 members in England, Wales and Northern Ireland after they rejected the pay offer of the government.

The RCN said that they will be able to protect intensive care and high-dependency units, chemotherapy, neonatal intensive care, dialysis and paediatric intensive care.&nbsp;

It added that they will have Christmas staffing levels in other services. Accident and emergency staff nurse Mark Boothroyd said that the crisis has reached a tipping point.

"Workloads are horrendous. Nurses are burnt out, can't provide safe service to patients. We are seeing harm to patients and patients put at risk every day," he said.

RCN member and Unite union's staff representative Boothroyd said that the stoppage to be held on Thursday and on December 20 is aimed at restoring "quality of care for patients".

Britain has been battling a cost-of-living crisis and the prices of energy, food and housing have been soaring. The industrial action of RCN is part of increasing dissent among private and public sector employees.&nbsp;

The impact on emergency care is such that Ottawa police recently had to take a shooting victim to hospital in their squad car, rather than wait for an ambulance, and an elderly woman who fell and broke her hip was forced to wait six hours for help from paramedics based 100 kilometers (62 miles) away.

Over the summer and into the fall, staffing shortages meant dozens of emergency rooms were forced to close -- sometimes for a night or a weekend, sometimes longer.

Wait times to see an ER doctor have soared to 12, 16, 20 hours -- or more.

"They're numb, deflated and feeling hopeless," said Cathryn Hoy, president of the Ontario Nurses' Association. Herself a nurse for 20 years, she described the situation as "critical."

Amelie Inard, 32, was taken to an ER in Montreal this week, in extreme pain and peeing blood.

The place was packed, and an overwrought nurse told her to describe her condition "in one sentence, really quickly, because of how busy they were," Inard said.

She eventually left in frustration, without seeing a doctor.

Hospital workloads are rising, Hoy said, along with patients' exasperation over extended wait times, leading to a spiking of violence against nurses.

Several nurses told AFP they had been punched, scratched or spat on, and had trays, dishes and feces thrown at them.

'Crazy conditions'

In the capital Ottawa, ambulances were unavailable on more than 1,000 occasions from January to July, as paramedics were stuck waiting to unload patients at crowded ERs.

A hospital in Peterborough, east of Toronto, in the past week was forced to treat patients on gurneys in the parking lot because its ER was full, said Hoy.

In Manitoba, doctor Merril Pauls said there had been "multiple times throughout the summer when we had to shut down beds in the emergency room" at Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre because of the nursing shortage.&nbsp; 
 
On one recent Sunday, he said, "We had too many people coming in and had no place to put them. We literally were double-bunking critical patients in a resuscitation bay.

"Our nurses are really working in crazy conditions."

It's a "really significant phenomenon going on across the country," the doctor added, and it's "getting worse."

A recent survey by the Canadian Union of Public Employees, the country's largest labor union, found that 87 percent of nurses have considered leaving their job "because of the thankless and grueling working conditions."

"Even new graduates are quitting," Hoy said.

Federal health minister Jean-Yves Duclos has vowed to make it easier for foreign credentials to be recognized. That could help 11,000 internationally trained doctors and nurses get jobs in their field in Canada.

But that won't be nearly enough, with 34,400 nursing positions now vacant, according to government data.

Compounding the problem, many Canadians -- like Inard -- don't have a family doctor and turn to emergency rooms for care.

"It's just so difficult to find a family doctor," she said.

And a frequent shortage of regular hospital beds often means long waits to transfer patients out of ERs to wards.

Ontario passed a bill at the end of September permitting transfers of patients awaiting long-term care to facilities up to 150 kilometers away.&nbsp;

Provincial Health Minister Sylvia Jones said it would "ease pressures on crowded emergency departments."

But critics say it could force frail, elderly people into care homes far from their loved ones.

For now, almost everyone needing treatment is eventually seen. But delays can pose long-term consequences for patients' health.

"If a stroke patient doesn't get access to a clot-busting medicine fast, brain cells will die and the patient will end up being more disabled than they would have been," Pauls said.

Serious infections can be deadly if not treated in time. So, too, can cancers and other diseases, he added.

Pauls recalled routinely telling discharged patients "to come back if things get worse."

"But now they laugh at us. They say: 'You're crazy. There's no way I'm going to go through this again.'"

Nursing shortage forces emergency room closures across Canada

Nurses across the UK are set to vote on strike action overpay. For the first time The Royal College of Nursing is balloting 300,000 of its members recommending that they vote in favor of action.

Largest strike of private sector nurses in US history began on Monday (September 12) with about 15,000 nurses in Minnesota and Wisconsin hospitals demanding better work conditions and higher wages.

Strikes in the United States have occurred regularly over the past year, with employees reporting to be exhausted by working during the Covid-19 pandemic and struggling with price rises.&nbsp;

A spokesperson for the Minnesota Nurses Association said that the three-day stoppage was to last until Thursday morning. Minnesota Nurses Association is co-ordinating the action.

Holding signs bearing messages such as "Patients Before Profits," employees gathered in groups in the early morning hours to protest outside some of the 16 affected hospitals, according to photographs the union posted online.&nbsp;

Hospitals have planned to continue providing care, albeit with possible disruptions.&nbsp;

AFP quoted North Memorial Hospital in Minnesota which said it "may be making some adjustments to non-emergency care and services to ensure adequate and safe staffing during the strike period." &nbsp;

However the hospital said that it will contnue to offer "full range of services"

The two sides have been negotiating for more than five months, without reaching an agreement.&nbsp;

"Right now in Minnesota, nurses are overworked, hospitals are understaffed, and patients are overcharged," MNA said in a statement.&nbsp;

Largest strike of private sector nurses in US history began on Monday (September 12) with about 15,000 nurses in Minnesota and Wisconsin hospitals demanding better work conditions and higher wages. Strikes in the United States have occurred regularly over the past year, with employees reporting to be exhausted by working during the Covid-19 pandemic and struggling with price rises. A spokesperson for the Minnesota Nurses Association said that the three-day stoppage was to last until Thursday morning. Minnesota Nurses Association is co-ordinating the action. Holding signs bearing messages such as "Patients Before Profits," employees gathered in groups in the early morning hours to protest outside some of the 16 affected hospitals, according to photographs the union posted online. Hospitals have planned to continue providing care, albeit with possible disruptions. AFP quoted North Memorial Hospital in Minnesota which said it "may be making some adjustments to non-emergency care and services to ensure adequate and safe staffing during the strike period."  However the hospital said that it will contnue to offer "full range of services" The two sides have been negotiating for more than five months, without reaching an agreement. The pandemic has changed the lives of many nurses like Maria who are working round the clock, away from their families even with foils and dustbin bags- as protection. Many nurses are being forced to pick between their loved ones and duties.

“My family put pressure on me to quit the job.... During the pandemic our relationships with family become difficult as we avoid close contact with them”, Huma Komal, a nurse from Karachi, Pakistan, was reported as saying. Like Huma, most nurses have picked service before self but our systems have failed them.

What about India?

In India, nurses are overworked because the country has just 1.7 nurses per 1,000 people. The WHO recommends a minimum of three nurses which means India has less than 43 per cent of the ideal number. Last year, the Government of India told the parliament that the country has 3.07 million registered nursing personnel. This includes nurses, midwives, and nursing assistants.

According to government figures, India's nurse-patient ratio is 1:2. Even then, India is far behind the internationally recommended standard of 1:4. At least 116 nurses have died of COVID-19 in India and this number was last updated in February 2021.

The International Council of Nurses said that burnout and stress had led millions of nurses to consider quitting the profession with a fewer number of experienced nurses could be left to handle regular hospital care.

The nurse's body said its colleagues had gone through&nbsp;"mass traumatisation" during the pandemic and "given everything they can".

ICN chief executive Howard Catton said the total number of the global workforce of nurses was 27 million with six million short during the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/how-coronavirus-has-changed-new-york-city-transit-369346">pandemic</a>.&nbsp;

The report said the<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/vitamin-d-supplements-cannot-protect-against-coronavirus-study-369411"> pandemic</a> "could trigger a mass exodus from the profession" as early as the second half of 2021 while calling on governments to invest in training more new nurses to address the global shortage and better pay package to encourage nurses to stay on in the profession.

On vaccination, Catton said, "Not being protected at work adds to their distress," calling all nurses take the coronavirus vaccine.

"It is an issue of protection and safety for patients, if somebody doesn't have the vaccine then it may well be that you have to look at redeploying them to other areas," Catton said.
