<p>With an Indian-built satellite GSAT-24 having formally commenced its operations, from around 36,500 km&nbsp;above the earth's surface, subscribers of India's Tata Play DTH Service would have the option to view 300 more television channels.</p>

<p>Prior to the operationalisation of GSAT-24, Tata Play&nbsp;(formerly Tata Sky) was able to broadcast only 600 channels, and that number would now increase to 900 channels.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chairman and Managing Director, NSIL, D. Radhakrishnan said, “GSAT-24 has been the first Demand Driven communication satellite mission undertaken by NSIL post space sector reforms. The GSAT-24 satellite is ready to usher in a new era of satellite television for India".</p>

<p>Built by ISRO's UR Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru, the GSAT-24 satellite is the first demand-driven mission of NewSpace India Limited(NSIL), which is ISRO's commercial arm.</p>

<p>GSAT-24 is a 24-Ku band communication satellite, meant to cater to the requirement of Tata Play’s DTH application needs. NSIL, incorporated in March 2019, is a Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Indian Government's Department of Space (DOS). The entire satellite capacity on-board GSAT-24 is leased to its committed customer Tata Play.</p>

<p>ISRO Chairman, Dr. S. Somanath said, “GSAT-24, a 4-tonne class communication satellite built by ISRO for providing DTH services, is fully operational at its maximum satellite capacity, following exhaustive in-orbit testing. This momentous achievement signifies a revolution in India’s telecommunications space, driven by cutting-edge indigenous technology. It serves as a tribute to our nation’s aerospace prowess and heralds India’s successful entry into the Demand Driven Mission segment.”</p>

<p>According to Tata Play, the increased bandwidth, after the inclusion of GSAT-24, will enable the DTH service to provide its users with an even sharper picture and sound quality, and an ability to carry 50 per cent more channels while becoming the largest satellite bandwidth provider among all DTH platforms.</p>

<p>Tata Play’s MD &amp; CEO Shri Harit Nagpal said, “Viewing experience has been Tata Play’s key priority. This collaboration with NSIL will provide our DTH subscribers with an even better video and audio quality and many more channels and services. It also strengthens our commitment to Linear TV in a country where approximately 140million homes are yet to buy their first TV”.</p>

<p>The GSAT-24 satellite was launched into orbit using a European Ariane-V rocket from their European Space Agency's Kourou Spaceport in French Guiana. The satellite was launched into orbit successfully on June 22nd, 2022.</p>

<p>After getting placed in orbit last mid-2022, various processes and technical assessments including on-orbit testing were carried out prior to operationalizing the satellite for broadcast operations. Meanwhile, the ground stations of Tata Play, that are meant to communicate with the satellite also were set up.&nbsp;</p>

ISRO-built satellite to bring 300 more channels on Tata Play; include Andamans, Northeast in coverage

<p>The 25-hour countdown to the 56th flight of India's PSLV rocket began at 10:56 am Friday, as the 321-tonne rocket waits to blast off from India's spaceport at 11:56 am on Saturday. In what is dubbed as 'PSLV C-54/EOS-06' mission, the rocket designed and developed by Indian Space Agency ISRO will be carrying nine satellites. While the primary passenger is ISRO's own EOS-6 or Oceansat, the eight co-passengers will be small satellites, each of which weigh below 20 kg.&nbsp;</p>

<p>EOS-6 is the third-generation satellite in the Oceansat series. This is to provide continuity services of Oceansat-2 spacecraft with enhanced payload specifications as well as application areas.</p>

<p>This mission gains significance as it is among the longest to be undertaken by the PSLV rocket. From the time the rocket lifts off from the first launchpad of Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, it would take more than two hours and six minutes for the final satellite to separate from the rocket and get injected into orbit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Given that there are nine satellites to be ejected into orbit, the PSLV rocket will be performing two manoeuvres to change its orbit. According to ISRO, the first satellite EOS-6 will separate at an altitude of 742 km. Thereafter, the first orbit change will be performed by deploying the OCTs (Orbit Change Thrusters) and the rocket's final stage will be brought to a lower altitude of 708 km. At the end of the second orbit change, the rocket's final stage will be brought from 563 km altitude to 514 km.</p>

<p>Orbit changes are carried out because each satellite is meant for a particular purpose and the user/customer requires the satellite to be in a particular orbit at a specific altitude above the earth's surface, to perform its job suitably. Hence, the mission is planned in such a way that the respective satellites get placed in their designated orbits.</p>

In addition to this, there will be satellites designed and built by Indian startups - 'Anand' imaging satellite from Pixxel, two satellites 'Thybolt' from Dhruva Space and four 'Astrocast' satellites from an American firm will be riding as co-passengers, on a commercial basis. These companies are customers of ISRO's commercial arm NSIL or New Space India Limited.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier this month, it was announced that the private sector will soon be manufacturing and realising the country's most reliable rocket, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). On Monday, on the sidelines of the launch of India's first satellite broadband service, ISRO Chairman Dr S Somnath added that private consortiums will soon be manufacturing India's heavy rockets viz. the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) rockets as well.</p>

<p>Quizzed whether ISRO will be collaborating with the private sector for the heavy&nbsp;launch vehicles, the ISRO chief replied in affirmative.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In due course time, we will be handing over the manufacturing of GSLV-MK&nbsp;III and SSLV&nbsp;to industrial consortiums. That is our plan for the long term to hand over all operational launches...to be rebuilt, relaunched and operated on a commercial basis by NSIL (New Space India Limited) [ISRO's commercial arm]." Dr Somnath told WION.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The ISRO chief further added, "We are also looking at how in the future rockets can be built, designed and built by consortiums, industries and NSIL for a better, cost-effective structure. Instead of government spending money. This model will be changing in due course of time,"</p>

<p>It is pertinent to note that GSLV series is the largest launch vehicle developed by India, which is currently in operation. ISRO chief added that the private space industry in India was growing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We believe that the satellites which are coming up in the private ecosystem which is definitely going to happen. That's the market we are looking at. We are also seeing the growth of the industry significantly in India. Not only small satellites but bigger satellites are also being built here in India. Maybe the ones that are being built outside will also be built here in India. We hope that it will happen and NSIL will move towards that market." said Dr Somnath.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As reported by WION, a consortium of the government-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and private entity L&amp;T won the bid for building five PSLV rockets, over a period of four years.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The contract for the same was exchanged between HAL and ISRO's commercial arm NSIL (New Space India Limited) during the inaugural session of the seventh Bengaluru Space Expo 2022.&nbsp;Based on competitive bidding, the HAL-led consortium emerged as the successful one with their $109&nbsp;million (Rs 860 crore)&nbsp;bid.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>"10 (Ten) in-orbit operational communication satellites viz. GSAT8, GSAT-10, GSAT-12R (CMS-01), GSAT-14, GSAT-15, GSAT-16, GSAT-17, GSAT-18, GSAT-30 and GSAT-31 have been transferred from Government of India to M/s. New Space India Ltd (NSIL), a CPSE under the Department of Space, at a written down value of Rs.4697.60 crores(Rs.46.97billion) against the issue of equity to the Government of India, with 01.04.2021 as the effective date of transfer" the Minister-in-Charge, Dr Jitendra Singh, shared in Parliament.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This means the transponder capacity on the satellite can be allocated to a customer on a payment basis, thus earning revenue for the Indian government. Simply put, it can be compared to how an Internet service provider sells connections to homes based on the speed limit, data limit etc, likewise the capacity of the satellite is allocated to niche customers such as telecommunications companies, broadcasters etc.</p>

<p>In this case, the Board of NSIL is authorized to price the transponder capacity as per the global trends. NSIL shall carry out the activities related to offering and allocation of capacity, as per the guidelines to be adopted by its Board.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The goal of carrying out such business activities is to enhance India's share of the $440bn global space economy. Notably, India's share is estimated to be less than 2% of the above. India's Space sector reforms that are being rolled out since 2020 are also meant to enhance the same. As part of this, the Department of Space, Government of India established the Indian National Space Promotion &amp; Authorization Centre (INSPACe) to be a single window agency to promote, handhold and authorize the activities of private entities in the sector, thus providing them with a level playing field.</p>

<p>Until 2020, India's private space industries were only supplying components and providing services to the state-run Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO). However, the reforms are aimed at enabling private companies to build and launch their own rockets and satellites from Indian soil and provide allied services.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, when queried about the much-awaited Space Policy, Dr S.Somanath, Chairman, ISRO and Secretary, Dept of Space, replied that the internal review was complete and that the cabinet approval was pending and the final approval could be expected very soon. He added that the Space Policy was meant to create clarity on the private sector's ability to build its own rockets and satellites. "The bill is targeted to give teeth to Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (<em>IN-SPACe</em>)" he said.&nbsp;</p>

Simply put, it can be compared to how an Internet service provider sells connections to homes based on the speed limit, data limit etc, likewise the capacity of the satellite is allocated to niche customers such as telecommunications companies, broadcasters etc. In this case, the Board of NSIL is authorized to price the transponder capacity as per the global trends. NSIL shall carry out the activities related to offering and allocation of capacity, as per the guidelines to be adopted by its Board. Notably, India's share is estimated to be less than 2% of the above. India's Space sector reforms that are being rolled out since 2020 are also meant to enhance the same. As part of this, the Department of Space, Government of India established the Indian National Space Promotion & Authorization Centre (INSPACe) to be a single window agency to promote, handhold and authorize the activities of private entities in the sector, thus providing them with a level playing field. Until 2020, India's private space industries were only supplying components and providing services to the state-run Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO). However, the reforms are aimed at enabling private companies to build and launch their own rockets and satellites from Indian soil and provide allied services. Earlier, when queried about the much-awaited Space Policy, Dr S.Somanath, Chairman, ISRO and Secretary, Dept of Space, replied that the internal review was complete and that the cabinet approval was pending and the final approval could be expected very soon. He added that the Space Policy was meant to create clarity on the private sector's ability to build its own rockets and satellites. "The bill is targeted to give teeth to Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe)" he said.
