She made her literary debut in 1993, as a poet by publishing five poems, including "Winter in Seoul", in the winter issue of Munhak-gwa-sahoe (Literature and Society). Next year, she began her career as a novelist by winning the 1994 Seoul Shinmun Spring Literary Contest with "Red Anchor".&nbsp;

Later in 1995, she published her first short story collection entitled Yeosu (Munji Publishing Company).&nbsp;

She won the International Booker Prize in 2016 for ‘The Vegetarian’, an unsettling novel in which a woman's decision to stop eating meat has devastating consequences.

Moreover, her work is characterised by this double exposure of pain, a correspondence between mental and physical torment with close connections to Eastern thinking, the committee said.

The Nobel Prize in Literature 2024 has been awarded to&nbsp;South Korean author Han Kang,&nbsp;“for her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life”.&nbsp;Her works include The Vegetarian, The White Book, Human Acts and Greek Lessons.

The Swedish Academy declared the winner on Thursday (Oct 10) with the prize carrying&nbsp;a&nbsp;cash award of 11&nbsp;million Swedish kronor ($1.1 million)&nbsp;and will be awarded on December 10.

"In her oeuvre, Han Kang confronts historical traumas and invisible sets of rules and, in each of her works, exposes the fragility of human life,"&nbsp;Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel Committee said after the winner announcement.&nbsp;

"She has a unique awareness of the connections between body and soul, the living and the dead, and in her poetic and experimental style has become an innovator in contemporary prose," Olsson added.&nbsp;

<h2>Who is Han Kang?</h2>

Han, 53, was born in 1970 in the South Korean city of Gwangju before moving to capital city of Seoul at the age of nine with her family.&nbsp;She comes from a literary background, her father being a reputed novelist. Alongside her writing, she has also devoted herself to art and music, which is reflected throughout her entire literary production.

She&nbsp;began her career in 1993 with the publication of a number of poems in the magazine 'Literature and Society'. Her&nbsp;prose debut came in 1995 with the short story collection ‘Love of Yeosu'.&nbsp;

Han's 2007 novel The Vegetarian, was translated into English in 2015 and won the International Booker prize in 2016.

Jon Fosse, born in Norwegian town of Haugesund met with a near-death accident at the age of seven, which left a great influence&nbsp;on his writing.&nbsp;

He studied comparative literature at the University of Bergen and published his first novel, Raudt, svart (Red, Black) in 1983. The novel was written in Nynorsk, which is one of the two written standards of the Norwegian language.&nbsp;

Fosse was equally well-versed in drama writing and published his first play, Og aldri skal vi skiljast (And We'll Never Be Parted) in 1994. &nbsp;

In one of his interviews, Fosse revealed he is influenced by Franz Kafka's writings among many others. He said, "I think the authors who have influenced me the most are the Norwegian writer Tarjei Vesaas, the Austrian poet Georg Trakl, and Samuel Beckett. Although I think the writers I admire the most are Franz Kafka and Knut Hamsun."

He has written novels, short stories, poetry, children’s books, essays and plays, and his works have been translated into more than forty languages.&nbsp;

Fosse has been ranked number 83 on the list of the Top 100 living geniuses by The Daily Telegraph. In the past, the Norwegian author has been nominated for many prestigious literature awards including International Booker Prize (2022), and National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction (2023).&nbsp;

Fosse was awarded the 2015 Nordic Council's Literature Prize for the trilogy Andvake (Wakefulness), Olavs draumar (Olav's Dreams) and Kveldsvævd (Weariness).

The award-giving body also said that the Norwegian author is one of the most widely performed playwrights in the world and has become “increasingly recognised for his prose,” and noted that irrespective of the genre, the “human condition” has always been a central theme of Fosse’s body of work.&nbsp;

The Nobel laureate’s European breakthrough as a dramatist came with Claude Régy’s 1999 Paris production of his 1996 play ‘Nokon kjem til å komme’ (Someone Is Going to Come).&nbsp;

Fosse’s greatest achievement as a writer in prose which was described by Anders Olsson, chair of the Nobel literature committee, as “magnum opus” was “A New Name: Septology VI-VII”.&nbsp;

The Swedish academy has also noted that while Fosse “shares the negative outlook of his predecessors his gnostic vision cannot be said to result in a nihilistic contempt of the world.”&nbsp;

It added, “Indeed, there is great warmth and humour in his work, and a naïve vulnerability to his stark images of human experience.”

The Nobel prize body also noted that Fosse writes novels heavily pared down to a style that has come to be known as ‘Fosse minimalism,’ an example of which was seen in his second novel ‘Stengd gitar’ (1985) where he presents everyday situations that are instantly recognisable from our own lives.

<h2>'New Norwegian'</h2>

“Fosse blends a rootedness in the language and nature of his Norwegian background, with artistic techniques in the wake of modernism,” said Olsson.&nbsp;

He also combines strong local ties, both linguistic and geographic, with modernist artistic techniques, the Swedish academy has said.&nbsp;

Fosse writes in a language known as “new Norwegian” which is said to be the least common of the two official versions of Norwegian which is only used by 10 per cent of the country’s population.&nbsp;

While speaking to Reuters, the 64-year-old said that he regarded the award as a recognition of this language and the movement promoting it and he ultimately owed the prize to the language itself.&nbsp;

Notably, the version of the language that Fosse uses was developed in the 19th century with rural dialects at its base, according to Reuters.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Overwhelmed and somewhat frightened’</h2>

“I am overwhelmed, and somewhat frightened,” Fosse told Reuters, in a statement. “I see this as an award to the literature that first and foremost aims to be literature, without other considerations,” he added.&nbsp;

“I was surprised when they called, yet at the same time not. I have cautiously prepared myself for the possibility that this could happen in the past 10 years,” Fosse told Norwegian public broadcaster NRK.&nbsp;

“It was a great joy for me to get the phone call,” he added.&nbsp;

Last year the Nobel Prize in Literature was won by French author <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/nobel-prize-winner-2022-for-literature-who-is-french-author-annie-ernaux-523044">Annie Ernaux </a>“for the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory.” The 82-year-old French author’s work is mostly autobiographical.

Nobel Prize in Literature: Norwegian author Jon Fosse wins for giving 'voice to the unsayable'

Just days before the Swedish Academy is due to announce winner of Nobel Prize in Literature for the year 2023, the excitement is building. The academy has already announced winners in the fields of medicine and physics. All eyes are now on who would win the coveted Nobel Prize for their mastery of words, human experience and musings that surround it.

The nominees for the Nobel Prize in Literature are not made public. But as always there is a speculation about who are in the running.

Among those believed to be in the running is Russian author and outspoken Kremlin critic Lyudmila Ulitskaya. She is known for her novels which often focus on personal relationships.

Ulitskaya, born in Davlekanovo in Russia in 1943, grew up in Moscow. She studied biology at the Moscow State University. She began her career in literature when she joined Jewish drama theatre.&nbsp;

Her first novel Sonechka&nbsp;was published in Novy Mir in the year 1992. It immediately became hugely popular. She has already won several international and Russian literary awards one of which is Russian Booker for her book Kukotsky's Case (2001).

In 2014 she won the prestigious Austrian State Prize for European Literature

Another name that is doing rounds is that of Salman Rushdie.

He is already a literary giant with large body of work. But he has courted controversy with his book The Satanic Verses&nbsp;for which assassination appeals were made by Islamic countries like Iran. Rushdie's literary journey has since then always had a certain political angle at least in other people's perception.

The British author of Indian heritage survived a stabbing attack just last year and lost an eye in the assault.

AFP has reported that there is a possibility that the Academy may honour Can Xue, a Chinese avant-guard fiction writer and literary critic.

Can Hue's mostly writes short fiction. Her writing depicts a break from realism of modern Chinese writers of earlier years.

A report by AFP stated that there are more names mentioned in the speculation. These include Romanian author Mircea Cartarescu, Hungary's Peter Nadas and Laszlo Krasznahorkai, Albania's Ismail Kadare, Kenyan writer Ngugi wa Thiong'o and Canada's Margaret Atwood.

There won't be a Nobel Prize in Literature this year but the Swedish Academy that awards the prestigious prize is still in the limelight.

Jean-Claude Arnault, a French citizen who is a major cultural figure in Sweden, is at the centre of a sex abuse and financial crimes scandal that has tarnished the academy and forced it to take a year off in its deliberations.

The 72-year-old is now on trial in Stockholm, facing two counts of rape of a woman seven years ago. He has denied the charges.

A verdict in his case is expected on Monday, the same day that the 2018 Nobel Prize announcements kick off with the Karolinska Institute announcing who wins the Nobel award in physiology or medicine.&nbsp;

The prosecutor has urged the court to sentence Arnault to three years in prison.

Yet no matter what the verdict for Arnault, the Swedish Academy itself has no guarantee that it will be allowed to keep awarding the literature prize.

Lars Heikensten, the head of the Nobel Foundation, was quoted as warning Friday that if the Swedish Academy does not resolve its tarnished image his agency could decide that another group would be a better host.&nbsp;

He even suggested there could be no Nobel Literature Prize awarded in 2019 either which is counter to the academy's current plan to award both the 2018 and the 2019 literature Nobels next year.

The allegations against Arnault, who ran a major cultural group in Sweden that was closely tied to the Swedish Academy, began in November 2017 when 18 women came forward in a Swedish newspaper with abuse accusations against him.

Arnault is married to a Swedish Academy member, poet Katarina Frostenson, who quit the body in April as tensions escalated.

That month the Swedish Academy said an internal investigation into sexual misconduct allegations found that "unacceptable behaviour in the form of unwanted intimacy" has taken place within the ranks of the prestigious institution. &nbsp; &nbsp;

But its judgment in handling the accusations was called into question, kicking off a fierce internal debate over how to face up to its flaws that divided the body's 18 members who are appointed for life into hostile camps. Several members either left or disassociated themselves from the secretive academy.

The first woman to lead the academy, former permanent secretary Sara Danius, also quit in April, leading observers to wonder why some of Sweden's most accomplished women appeared to the taking the fall for a man's alleged misconduct.

Many people in the Scandinavian nation, which is known for promoting gender equality, have expressed dismay over the scandal, which has exposed bitter divisions within the academy and led to accusations of patriarchal leanings among some members.

In May, the Swedish Academy postponed the 2018 prize with the intention of awarding it in 2019.

The academy's internal probe eventually led to a police investigation and the trial before the Stockholm District Court.
