The BSE S&amp;P Sensex closed 634 points or 1.55 per cent higher at 41,451 while the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/nifty-sensex-inch-lower-zee-top-gainer-in-nifty-50-263548">Nifty 50</a> moved up by 188 points at 12,214.

Except for Nifty IT, all sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were in the green with Nifty realty ticking up by 2.73 per cent, auto by 2.68 per cent, PSU bank by 2.41 per cent and metal by 1.43 per cent.

Among stocks, JSW Steel was the top gainer at Rs 278 per share, up by 5.9 per cent. Private lenders <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/lower-provisions-help-icici-bank-swing-to-first-quarter-profit-238840">ICICI Bank</a>, IndusInd Bank and Yes Bank advanced by 3.7 per cent, 3.3 per cent and 2.9 per cent respectively while state-owned State Bank of India ticked up by 3.2 per cent.

India, the world's third-biggest oil consumer, imports about 80 per cent of its oil needs, making it highly susceptible to crude price swings.

"Iran will certainly retaliate ... Oil is likely to be on boil. Bad for large oil-importing countries, especially those with large trade and current account deficit like India," said Ajay Bodke, chief executive of portfolio management services at Prabhudas Lilladher Pvt Ltd in Mumbai.

"Risk aversion would spike sharply. Investors may again find comfort in mega-caps and shun 'risky' small- and mid-cap equities."

Shares in oil refining, retail and telecoms group Reliance Industries Ltd, India's largest company by market value, fell 0.7 per cent, on concerns of falling margins due to the rise in oil prices.
