Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, a New York City agency has sued Starbucks for wrongfully terminating a longtime worker and union organiser. Reportedly, the barista named Austin Locke was fired after he and his colleagues voted to unionise a Starbucks in Queens. According to the agency, the case marks its first lawsuit for a violation of New York City’s “just cause” protections, a 2017 law meant to safeguard the interests of the fast-food workers. In response to the filing of the lawsuit, the coffee chain refused to comment. “We do not comment on pending litigation. However, we do intend to defend against the alleged violations of the New York City Just Cause Law.” Read more: 'Intense culture of fear': Starbucks reportedly fires workers involved in union efforts As reported extensively by WION, over 55 distinct strikes by Starbucks employees have taken place in at least 17 different US states in recent months due to the company's vigorous opposition to a wave of unionisation. According to an estimate by Starbucks Workers United, the company has directly lost more than $375,000 due to the strikes. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is currently investigating hundreds of allegations of misconduct by Starbucks related to the union campaign, including claims of closing stores to dismantle unions, firing employees, and intimidating and threatening workers to prevent them from unionising. Last month, a US federal court ordered Starbucks to reinstate its seven employees who were allegedly fired for unionising. Judge Sheryl H. Lipman at the US District Court of the Western District of Tennessee passed the judgement, terming the rehiring as "just and proper". Akin to the case in Queens, seven Starbucks baristas had attempted to unionise the Memphis branch of the company and were promptly fired. The remains of Africa's earliest dinosaur, which walked the world some 230 million years ago, have been found by scientists in Zimbabwe.

The dinosaur, known as Mbiresaurus raathi, was discovered by an international team of palaeontologists. It was only about one metre (3.2 feet) tall, had a long tail, and could weigh up to 30 kilogrammes (66 pounds).

Christopher Griffin, the researcher who found the first bone, told AFP on Thursday that the creature "ran around on two legs and had a fairly small head."

According to Griffin, a 31-year-old researcher at Yale University, the dinosaur belonged to the sauropodomorph species, the same linage that would eventually include huge long-necked dinosaurs. It was likely an omnivore that consumed plants, small animals, and insects.

During two expeditions in 2017 and 2019, a group of researchers from Zimbabwe, Zambia, and the United States discovered the skeleton.

Griffin, a PhD candidate at Virginia Tech University at the time, recalled, "I dug out the full femur and I knew at that instant, that it was a dinosaur and I was holding Africa's earliest known dinosaur fossil."

The research done by his team was initially released in the journal Nature on Wednesday.

Only South America and India had previously yielded dinosaur fossils from the same time period.

The palaeontologists chose the Zimbabwe site for digging after determining that it lay roughly at the same latitude as earlier discoveries in present-day South America when all the continents were linked in a land mass known as Pangea.

According to Max Langer of the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, "Mbiresaurus raathi is remarkably similar to some dinosaurs of the same age found in Brazil and Argentina, reinforcing that South America and Africa were part of a continuous landmass during the Late Triassic."

State media KCNA said on Friday that the foreign ministry of North Korea criticised a new UN human rights expert as "biased" and that the nation would not accept what it dubbed US-led efforts to destroy the isolated dictatorship.

The yen plunged to a 24-year low versus the dollar on Thursday as markets battled inflation fears and another significant Chinese city went into lockdown. The world's stock indexes mainly declined during this day. Equities in Frankfurt, London, and Paris all experienced declines of 1.5% to 2% as worries about further increases in borrowing costs were stoked by the eurozone's record-high inflation rate and the region's soaring winter energy prices as a result of Russia's conflict with Ukraine. The European Central Bank raised interest rates for the first time in ten years in July, and it will reveal its most recent monetary policy decision on Thursday. A continued focus on US monetary policy was also anticipated. The August jobs report, which will be released on Friday, is anticipated to bolster the Federal Reserve's resolve to raise interest rates. Analysts predict that the US economy will create a healthy 300,000 new jobs in August and that the unemployment rate will stay at 3.5%. According to Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B Riley Wealth Management, "we're in this world where we're afraid that good news is going to embolden the Fed to be even more aggressive." On Thursday, the yen hit a record 24-year low versus the dollar as Japan maintained its long-standing monetary easing measures in opposition to the Fed's tightening. In lunchtime trades in Europe, one dollar traded above 140 yen for the first time since 1998 as the dollar appreciated versus other currencies. Thursday saw more declines in Asian stocks as investors continued to assess China's superpower economy's declining factory activity. (with inputs from agencies)

Remains of what can be regarded as the largest dinosaur ever discovered in Europe were found in a back garden in Portugal. When the property owner in the city of Pombal found pieces of fossilised bone in the yard and called scientists from the University of Lisbon, an excavation operation in the area began in 2017.

The vertebrae and ribs of what Spanish and Portuguese palaeontologists believe to be a brachiosaurid sauropod have been discovered at the site earlier this month.

The largest living land animal, and the largest of all dinosaurs, was the sauropod.

Elisabete Malafaia from the University of Lisbon said, "It is not usual to find all the ribs of an animal like this, let alone in this position, maintaining their original anatomical position."

As per the size of the bones discovered in the yard, the dinosaur was 12 metres tall and 25 metres long, The Guardian reported.

Researchers are hopeful that additional excavation will turn up more pieces of the same dinosaur because of the skeleton’s natural posture.

The skeleton was discovered in Upper Jurassic sedimentary strata, indicating a 150-million-year age range.

The Guardian reported that Malafaia further said, "[This discovery] confirms that the region of Pombal has an important fossil record of Late Jurassic vertebrates, which in the last decades has provided the discovery of abundant materials very significant for the knowledge of the continental faunas that inhabited the Iberian Peninsula at about 145m years ago."

It is believed that the sauropod group, which includes brontosaurus and diplodocus, consisted of herbivorous animals with long necks and four legs.
