The bumper harvest of apples this year in the valley brought cheer to the apple farmers in Kashmir valley but now they are considering it one of their worst years in terms of profitability. With the prices plummeting by over 50 per cent and no place to store the crop, the apple farmers of the valley are worried sick.

The apple farmers are getting 50-60 per cent lower prices than what they managed last year. The farmers say the demand for Kashmiri apples in the market has come down which has become a worry for the majority of apple growers in the Kashmir valley.

“We face a lot of problems like cold storage. Main cold storage facilities get booked in advance and due to the bumper crop, the growers were left with no option of storing their crop. It’s still lying outside and farmers don't know what to do with it. There was an issue with the national highway as well. And when all this crop reached the 'mandi' (market), there was a dip in prices," said Shahid Chaudhary, general secretary, New Kashmir Fruit Association.

"In a 'Mandi' which gets 50-100 trucks daily, over 150 trucks arrived and that eventually lead to dip in rates. We have been asking the government for more cold storage units. We have very less cold storage, we have requested the government time and again. There should be mini cold storages in small villages too," added Chaudhary.

One of the reasons for the dip in the rates of Kashmiri apples has also been the apples from Iran. The import of Iranian apples to India has affected the market of all the apple-producing states in the North of India, including Kashmir.

The apple growers and associations have requested the central government to stop the import of Iranian apples so that the market of home-grown apples is not affected.

"The Irani apples have ruined our market. We have asked central government to ban Iranian apples as it has affected our market. One of the reasons for dip in the rates of the Kashmiri apple is due to the Iranian apples," said Chaudhary.

According to data, there has been a 15-20 per cent increase in production this season.

"We had a bumper crop this year but there was a dip in the rates of the apples this year. The expenditure on boxes, fertilisers and pesticides has been more this year but rates have gone down. Kashmir produced around 2.3 million metric tonnes of apples last year. This year, it has increased by 15-20 per cent. Around 2,500 to 3,000 apple trucks would leave from the valley during the peak season. Buyers from across India are also facing losses due to the dip in rates.

A month after a US court issued a stay on Joe Biden's ambitious student-loan forgiveness plan, the White House on Tuesday announced it will extend payment pause on federal student loans, up until June next year. The move is aimed at allowing the court to conduct its hearing in desired time as Biden's forgiveness plan remains blocked. “We’re extending the payment pause because it would be deeply unfair to ask borrowers to pay a debt that they wouldn’t have to pay, were it not for the baseless lawsuits brought by Republican officials and special interests,” said Miguel Cardona, education secretary in a statement. Read more: US court issues a stay order blocking Biden's student loan forgiveness plan Biden also took to Twitter to state that his debt relief plan was legal and that Republicans were the reason it had been embroiled in a legal slugfest. "I'm confident that our student debt relief plan is legal. But it’s on hold because Republican officials want to block it. That's why @SecCardona is extending the payment pause to no later than June 30, 2023, giving the Supreme Court time to hear the case in its current term," tweeted Biden. Ever since Covid struck the US, a pause on student loan payments has been put in place. The relief granted on Tuesday was the eighth time that the policy, first implemented in March 2020 has been extended. Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and South Carolina. Unveiled in August, the programme attempts to provide a $10,000 relief for borrowers with salaries less than $125,000. For recipients of Pell Grants, the relief doubles to $20,000. However, the Republicans are of the view that it will be a misuse of funds which will cost the exchequer more than $400 billion. The weekend elections in Malaysia delivered a hung assembly. The political parties soon found themselves trying to manufacture coalitions to reach the magical majority mark of 112. However, King Al-Sultan Abdullah on Tuesday said he will pick the next prime minister after the warring parties could not break the deadlock. After the failure of coalition talks, the king's role in the formation of the next federal government has taken the centre stage. But who is the king and what role does he play in Malaysia's unique constitutional monarchy system? Read more: 'Let me take a decision soon': Malaysia King to call the shots after stalemate election Who is Malaysia's King Al-Sultan Abdullah? King Al-Sultan Abdullah is Malaysia's 16th monarch and ascended the throne in 2019 at the age of 59. He belongs to one of the royal families of the nine states which picks the king every five years — a system that was agreed upon in 1957 when Malaysia gained independence from the British colonialists. King Al-Sultan Abdullah is the ruler of the state of Pahang which is situated on Malaysia's east coast. As a king, Al-Sultan Abdullah is the head of the state and the commander of the armed forces. More importantly, he oversees key federal appointments, including the post of prime minister. Is the Malaysian king always the kingmaker? While King Al-Sultan Abdullah has a rather ceremonial role to play in the electoral choices, he has the power to appoint any lawmaker that he believes can amass the required majority. Rarely has a Malaysian king ever used this power to conjure a government and a prime minister. However, the political instability in the last three years has prompted the silver-haired Al-Sultan Abdullah to step up and call the shots. WATCH | Malaysia faces hung Parliament for first time in history after tight election race × In February 2020, he appointed Muhyiddin Yassin as the PM after Mahathir Mohamad was forced to resign following a bitter coalition infighting. A year later, the king appointed Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the new PM after asking the country's lawmakers to submit their preferred choice as the PM in a letter. On Tuesday, after opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and former PM Muhyiddin Yassin could not gather the numbers, Al-Sultan Abdullah told reporters, "Let me make a decision soon." The King proposed the formation of a 'unity government', a proposal that was subsequently turned down by Muhyiddin. As many as 30 lawmakers from the Barisan Nasional alliance have been summoned by the monarch to meet him on Wednesday to determine who becomes the next PM. The last three years have been rather turbulent for Malaysia's political class and ordinary citizens. Rising inflation and global economic slowdown have only added to the woes and thus all eyes will be on Al-Sultan Abdullah to pick a candidate that can last the complete tenure. Republican lawmakers Cathy McMorris Rodgers and James Comer piled pressure on the Chinese short video app TikTok and its owner ByteDance on Tuesday by saying the company may have misled the Congress about how much data it shares with China. "Some of the information TikTok provided during the staff briefing appears to be untrue or misleading, including that TikTok does not track US user locations," said the Republican duo in a letter to TikTok Chief Executive Shou Zi Chew. Both Rodgers and Comer are expected to set the House agenda next year after Republicans won the lower chamber in the just-concluded midterm elections. WATCH | US: Senators call TikTok a 'massive surveillance tool; Is TikTok spying on you for China? × When the Republicans formally take over the House in January, they are expected to unleash a slew of investigations ranging from Hunter Biden's laptop story to TikTok and its data policies. The ByteDance-owned app was targetted much more aggressively under former president Donald Trump's tenure and the Republicans are seemingly looking to revert to the same strategy. Earlier this month, the FBI also warned against data leaks through the app, with Director Christopher Wray telling a House panel that potential Chinese government access to users’ data or software is reason to be “extremely concerned”. Wray added that ByteDance embeds specific application programming interfaces (APIs) in the app which gives Beijing access to “control data collection of millions of users or control the recommendation algorithm, which can be used for influence operations, or to control software on millions of devices, which gives the opportunity to potentially technically compromise personal devices.” Read more: FBI director says TikTok poses ‘national security threat’, gives Beijing access to data, devices Afterwards, two US senators called TikTok a Chinese surveillance tool. “It’s not just the content you upload to TikTok but all the data on your phone, other apps, all your personal information, even facial imagery, even where your eyes are looking on your phone,” said Arkansas Republican Tom Cotton. Meanwhile, Senate Intelligence Committee chair Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat, said the app posed “an enormous threat" while adding, “All of that data that your child is inputting and receiving, is being stored somewhere in Beijing.” The Biden administration is not in favour of inflicting a complete ban on the app like India. However, with pressure mounting from all sides and TikTok not being able to plead its case immaculately, the White House may have to rethink its strategy. Notably, up until Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan was a cricketer-turned-politician, China was happy with the project's progress. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has challenged the result of the election he lost last month to leftist opponent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, alleging that ballots from some polling machines should be "invalidated."

According to Bolsonaro's alliance, certain electronic voting equipment used in the second-round runoff between Bolsonaro and Lula on October 30 showed "signs of irreparable... malfunction."

They claim that older models of the voting machines showed "signs of serious failures that generate uncertainties and make it impossible to validate the results generated". As a result, they argued that the votes cast by those models should be "invalidated."

Despite allowing his cabinet to start making plans for a presidential transition, Bolsonaro hasn't acknowledged the election loss publically.

Brazil's Bolsonaro contests election results, alleges voting machines had 'signs of serious failures'

A bipartisan group of 16 US senators in a letter have asked the joe Biden administration to carefully reconsider giving Ukraine the lethal Gray Eagle drones to fight Russia.

Several senators, including Republican Joni Ernst and Democrat Joe Manchin, who are both members of the Senate Armed Services Committee, have expressed alarm at US opposition to the proposal and stated that providing the armable drone "demands careful reconsideration."

Reuters reports that the group has asked Pentagon to explain why Ukraine's request for the drones has so far been rejected. Ukraine has made multiple appeals for the said drones. Here's all you need to know:

Why are these drones special?

The MQ-1C Gray Eagle drone as per Reuters has an operational ceiling of 29,000 feet. This capability can go a long way in helping Ukraine in its defence and would "represent a great technological leap" for the country.

Does Ukraine only want these particular drones?

No, as Russia increasingly uses kamikaze drones and targets civilian infrastructure, Ukraine has made several requests for the United States to give it sophisticated drones. Its most recent request was for anti-drone missiles.

Why is the US hesitant to grant Ukraine's request?

While the Pentagon hasn't publicly stated its position, it is believed that the denial was motivated by worries that the drones could intensify the conflict and the belief that they are not necessary for Ukraine's military effort. Additionally, there are concerns that drones might be shot down.

What now?

The senators as per a Wall Street Journal report have given Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin until November 30 to respond to their questions. They want to know why the Pentagon considered the drone, produced by General Atomics, was inappropriate for the conflict in Ukraine; whether US worries about technology transfer could be alleviated; and whether the Pentagon feared that launching the drone would further enrage Russia.
