Netanyahu uncertain if Hamas commander Dief was killed in Israeli airstrike that took 90 civilian lives

On 7 October, during the initial chaos of the Hamas assault, Israel's armed forces reportedly employed a controversial battle tactic called the "Hannibal protocol," claims a report.&nbsp;

As per the Israeli daily Haaretz, this procedure was used at three army facilities attacked by Hamas and potentially put civilians at risk.

<h2>What is the Hannibal Protocol?</h2>

This controversial directive as per reports was used by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) until 2016. The protocol has just one goal: to prevent the capture of soldiers by enemy soldiers, even at the cost of hostages' lives.

According to "Forensic Architecture, Violence at the Threshold of Detectability" a book by Eyal Weizman, one version of the Hannibal Protocol says that "the kidnapping must be stopped by all means, even at the price of striking and harming our own forces."

Reportedly, at 11:22 am, about five hours after the attack began, a directive was issued to Israel’s Gaza division stating, "Not a single vehicle can return to Gaza."

This message, as per the Haaretz report quoting a source, meant preventing any vehicles from returning, regardless of potential casualties.

"Everyone knew by then that such vehicles could be carrying kidnapped civilians or soldiers … Everyone knew what it meant to not let any vehicles return to Gaza."

It is not known how many civilian or military casualties happened because of this order, however, documents and testimonies from soldiers and mid-senior level IDF officers suggest Hannibal protocol's use was "widespread".

<h2>Israel Investigation and Reactions</h2>

An Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson reportedly told the publication that internal investigations into the events of 7 October are ongoing.&nbsp;

"The aim of these investigations is to learn and to draw lessons which could be used in continuing the battle. When these investigations are concluded, the results will be presented to the public with transparency," read the statement, as reported by The Guardian.

'Palestine will be free': Pro-Palestine protestors climb Australia Parliament roof, blame Israel of war crimes

The cost of war is heavy, and for the innocent, it is back-breaking. In Gaza, the Israel-Hamas war that has already stretched to over eight months has&nbsp;given way to dangerous skin diseases among children.

<h2>Skin infections: A debilitating side effect of war</h2>

Many Gazans, adults, and children are suffering from skin infections ranging from scabies to chicken pox, lice, impetigo, and other debilitating rashes.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 150,000 people in the Palestinian territory have contracted skin diseases in the squalid conditions into which displaced Gazans have been forced since the Israel-Hamas war erupted on October 7.

Talking to news agency AFP, Wafaa Elwan, a Gazan woman, said, "We sleep on the ground, on sand where worms come out underneath us." Her family is one of thousands living on a sandy patch near the sea, near the central Gaza City of Deir al-Balah.

The mother of seven believes infections are inevitable.&nbsp;

"We cannot bathe our children as before. There are no hygiene and sanitary products for us to wash and clean the place. There's nothing."

Earlier, parents used to tell their children to wash in the Mediterranean. But pollution that has built up as war has devastated basic facilities has increased disease risk.

"The sea is all sewage. They even throw garbage and baby napkins into the sea," she said.

<h2>Thousands of cases reported</h2>

The WHO has reported 96,417 cases of scabies and lice since the war started in Gaza. This includes 9,274 cases of chickenpox, 60,130 cases of skin rashes, and 10,038 impetigo cases.

According to Sami Hamid, a pharmacist who runs a makeshift clinic in the Deir al-Balah camp, scabies, and chickenpox are especially widespread in the coastal Palestinian territory.

Children's skin suffers from "the hot weather and the lack of clean water," he said.

Mohammed Abu Mughaiseeb, the medical coordinator in Gaza for Doctors Without Borders (MSF), told AFP that children are vulnerable because, "they are children — they play outside, they'll touch anything, eat anything without washing it".

He explained that the hot weather increases sweating and accumulation of dirt that causes rashes and allergies, which, if scratched, lead to infections. Furthermore, he warned that Gaza's children are already highly vulnerable to disease because their immune systems are compromised by malnutrition.

MSF doctors fear that other skin conditions, such as leishmaniasis, which can be fatal in its most virulent form, can also make an appearance among the millions of displaced Gazans.

Not only this, as per the WHO, other diseases have also rampaged through camps for the displaced, feeding on poor hygiene.

As per the international agency, already 485,000 cases of diarrhoea have been reported.

The latest United Nations counts show that of the 2.4 million Gaza population, 1.9 million have been displaced.

Israel-Hamas conflict: Children in Gaza hit hard by dangerous skin diseases amid prolonged war

Animal rights activists in the UK, on Tuesday (June 12), defaced the portrait of British King Charles III. This was his first official portrait since he ascended to the throne.&nbsp;

The activists covered his face with an image of the animated character 'Wallace' from the "Wallace and Gromit" series, along with a speech bubble that read: "No cheese, Gromit. Look at all this cruelty on RSPCA farms!".

<h2>Who is behind the act?</h2>

Campaign group Animal Rising has taken responsibility&nbsp;for this act which was aimed at protesting animal welfare standards on farms certified by the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), an animal charity of which Charles is a patron.

Footage released by Animal Rising show two supporters entering London's Philip Mould gallery and covering the king's face on the portrait with the cartoon image and adding the speech bubble.

'No cheese, Gromit': Animal activists vandalise King Charles III's first official portrait. Watch!

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour challenger Keir Starmer on Tuesday (June 4) went head-to-head in their first debate ahead of July elections. The two leaders clashed over how to rejuvenate Britain's economy, with Sunak accusing the opposition of planning tax hikes if it wins the upcoming July 4 election.

<h2>First debate</h2>

Just weeks before Britain's General Elections, in their first debate, both leaders stuck to their campaign narratives.&nbsp;

Sunak, a Conservative, claimed only he had a viable strategy for boosting the economy, while Starmer portrayed the Conservatives as responsible for 14 years of economic chaos.

During the lively debate, a relatively recent feature in British politics that attracts significant voter attention, the leaders sparred over the cost-of-living crisis, public health service waiting lists, and immigration.

The questions highlighted common voter concerns: rising living costs, long health service waits, and declining education standards.

Although the debate yielded few new insights, an immediate opinion poll suggested Sunak emerged as the winner of the debate. This is contrary to wider opinion polls that predict a win for Labour in the July elections.

<h2>Labour, higher taxes, and Sunak on the offensive</h2>

Sunak reiterated the Conservative attack that Labour's only plan was to increase taxes by £2,000 (over $2,500) per person.&nbsp;

"Mark my words, Labour will raise your taxes. (It) is in their DNA. Your work, your car, your pension, you name it, Labour will tax it," he claimed.

Starmer did not immediately refute this, later dismissing the £2,000 figure as "nonsense." Labour has pledged not to raise income tax or National Insurance if it gains power.

Speaking to an&nbsp;audience member, Starmer shared his working-class background, contrasting it with Sunak's wealth: "I do know the anguish of worrying when the postman comes with a bill, what bill is it, am I going to be able to I pay it? I don’t think the prime minister quite understands."

Starmer criticised the Conservatives for 14 years of chaos and opposed Sunak's mandatory national service plan. Sunak drew groans for blaming NHS waiting lists on strikes and was laughed at when he claimed the numbers were decreasing.

However, he regained some ground by discussing immigration. Sunak defended his plan to send illegal asylum seekers to Rwanda, contrasting it with Labour's lack of a similar deterrent. He promised to prioritise national security over any foreign court's decisions.

Starmer stated he would tackle immigration too, and that he would consider third-country asylum processing if it didn't breach international law.&nbsp;To this, Sunak, facing a 20-point deficit in polls, attacked the labour leader's&nbsp;lack of a clear plan.

In his closing remarks, Sunak criticised Starmer: "Keir Starmer is asking you to hand him a blank cheque without explaining its cost or what it will buy. In uncertain times, we simply cannot afford an uncertain prime minister."

Starmer countered, promising no "gimmicks or unfunded promises" like those he attributed to Sunak. He urged voters to reject "five more years of Conservative decline and division."

"Imagine how you would feel waking up on July 5 to five more years of the Conservatives, five more years of decline and division, the arsonists handed back the matches," he said.

"Now imagine turning the page with a Labour government that rolls up its sleeves and gets on with the job… The choice at this election is clear: more chaos with the Conservatives or the chance to rebuild Britain with a changed Labour Party."

About 5.7 million Syrians live in extreme poverty, reported the World Bank on Saturday (May 25).&nbsp;

As per two new reports published by the World Bank on Syria, 13 years into the devastating civil war that has battered the economy and impoverished millions, more than a quarter of people are living in extreme poverty condition. Before the conflict, extreme poverty was "virtually non-existent" said one report.&nbsp;

"Extreme poverty, while virtually non-existent before the conflict, affected more than one in four Syrians in 2022" and might have further deteriorated after a deadly earthquake last year, it said, as reported by AFP. Last year's earthquake killed about 6,000 people.

<h2>Poverty and Syria</h2>

Even as the war ravages the economy, infrastructure, and industry in Syria, Lebanon's economic meltdown in late 2019, the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, have all contributed to the erosion of the welfare of Syrian households in recent years, says the report.&nbsp;

"Continued funding shortfalls and limited access to humanitarian assistance," have further strained poor Syrians, already coping with "soaring prices, reduced access to essential services and rising unemployment," said the World Bank.

In 2023,&nbsp;Syria's GDP was&nbsp;estimated at around $6.2 billion. In 2024, it is&nbsp;projected to contract by 1.5 per cent, "extending the 1.2 per cent decline in 2023," said the report.

Previously, the United Nations estimated that about 90 per cent of Syrians live in poverty. It also estimates that around two million live in extreme poverty conditions after more than a decade of the war.

In a conversation with AFP, the international agency said that its humanitarian 2024 response plan in Syria requires over $4 billion, but is only six per cent funded.

The dwindling aid and lack of opportunities, as per the World Bank, have pushed many Syrians to rely on money/remittances sent by relatives from abroad. As per the World Bank's estimates, in "2022, the total value of remittances received by Syrian households reached about $1.05 billion".

Trigger warning: Some readers may find the details of this report disturbing. Discretion is advised

In 2021, the United Kingdom and the world were shocked after the horrifying crimes of 'Necro Lord' David Fuller came to light. Over a period of 15 years, Fuller had sexually abused the corpses of 101 women and girls in the hospital mortuaries. Now, in the wake of his sickening crimes, the nation is set to introduce a law that will sentence perverts like him to five-year in prison.

<h2>Punishing Necrophilia</h2>

As per reports, under the new law, criminals who sexually abuse dead bodies will face prison time of&nbsp;seven years.

The changes, as per the report, will also create a new offence of "sexual activity with a corpse" which will punish non-penetrative crimes with a maximum prison sentence of five years.

This will be made possible after the government amends the existing 2003 legislation and increases the current sentence for penetrating corpses from two to seven years, said Justice minister Laura Farris, as cited by Daily Mail. The amendment was initially brought forward by Conservative former ministers Greg Clark and Dame Tracey Crouch.

Addressing the House of Commons, Clark said, "All of Fuller's crimes are, frankly, unspeakable, but as well as the current sentencing limit being absurdly inadequate to deal with, in effect, the rape of dead bodies, it does not cover at all any form of sexual assault that is non-penetrative."

He said there was "clearly a gap" in the current law that needs to be patched up, and "That's what this new clause aims to do."

Lending his voice to the more than 100 victims of David Fuller, Clark said they "were robbed of their lives and then their dignity and then the victims".

He added that their families have also been robbed of adequate justice, their devastation "has been heart-breaking".

Justice Minister Farris said, "such was the extent of Fuller's offending, we've had to do so and the Government is pleased to confirm the Sexual Offences Act 2003 will be amended under this legislation to capture the sexual touch of a corpse, with a new maximum sentence of seven years for penetrative offences, and five for non-penetrative acts".

<h2>David Fuller's perverted crimes</h2>

Fuller, a maintenance worker, sexually abused the bodies of at least 101 women and girls aged between nine and 100 while employed at the now-closed Kent and Sussex Hospital and the Tunbridge Wells Hospital, in Pembury, between 2005 and 2020.

Not only that, he had recorded himself committing the gruesome crimes. He was also found guilty of murdering 25-year-old Wendy Knell, 20-year-old Caroline Pierce, and two separate attacks in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, in 1987.

Dubai, as per a report released on Tuesday (May 14) has emerged as a meeting point for criminals from across the world.&nbsp;

A collaboration of over 70 media outlets and Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) titled 'Dubai Unlocked' has revealed that the city "has opened its doors to hundreds of people accused of criminality around the globe."&nbsp;

Dubai is where dubious individuals, from "alleged money launderers and drug lords, to political figures accused of corruption and businessmen sanctioned for financing terrorism," all clean their cash through real estate.

But Why Dubai? Here's what the report says.

<h2>Dubai: A crossroads of commerce and criminals?</h2>

Dubai, which "has long served as a crossroads for commerce" has now "become a meeting point for men and women from around the globe who have been accused of criminality and corruption."

As per the report "for those looking to launder or hide cash" Dubai, which has a reputation for financial secrecy, low taxes, and an ever-expanding spread of valuable real estate, is an appealing option.

However, it adds that Dubai is far from the only city that attracts criminals looking to stash their wealth.&nbsp;

"New York City and London real estate have also been known to attract dirty money," says the report.

<h2>But, why Dubai?</h2>

According to experts interviewed by OCCRP, several factors contribute to Dubai's appeal as a place to stash wealth, "particularly for those who are thwarted by sanctions from owning property in Western democracies, or are on the run from law enforcement".

One major factor, it says, is the "emirate's inconsistent responses to requests from foreign authorities for help arresting and extraditing fugitives."

According to Radha Stirling, an attorney and human rights advocate leading the legal assistance organisation 'Detained in Dubai,' UAE authorities use high-profile fugitives as "bargaining chips."

"The presence of extradition agreements between nations are not necessarily key to whether or not people are extradited," said Stirling.

According to Sauod Abdulaziz Almutawa, an officer from Dubai police’s anti-money laundering department, "What matters is what Dubai wants in return and whether that nation has something they want enough to barter."

Emirate's justice system, as per Jodi Vittori, a Georgetown University professor studying corruption and illicit finance, is 'a black hole'.

"It is unclear why the UAE will work with some law enforcement in some cases to arrest criminals located in the UAE and in other cases, they do not," she told OCCRP adding, "In many ways, the UAE is a law enforcement black hole."

Scientifically, is there an apt time for the consumption of tea and coffee? Yes, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) there is actually something as the best time to consume these caffeinated beverages. Keep reading to learn the best time to enjoy tea and coffee.

<h2>Why shouldn't you drink tea whenever you want?</h2>

As per ICMR's recently released 'Dietary Guidelines for Indians,' both these drinks contain caffeine, and these beverages over time can "induce physiological dependence".

"Tea and coffee contain caffeine, which stimulates the central nervous system and induces physiological dependence," says the medical body.

Furthermore, tea and coffee contain Tannin, which, as per the report, is known to cause issues with the body's ability to absorb iron.

<h2>How much caffeine can a cup of tea or coffee contain?</h2>

According to ICMR's report, a 150 ml cup of brewed coffee contains 80–120&nbsp;mg of caffeine, instant coffee contains 50–65&nbsp;mg and tea contains 30–65&nbsp;mg of caffeine.

"Moderation in tea and coffee consumption is advised so that caffeine intake does not exceed the tolerable limits (300&nbsp;mg/day)."

"Excessive consumption of coffee is known to increase blood pressure and cause abnormalities in heartbeat. In addition, an association between coffee consumption and elevated levels of total and LDL cholesterol ('bad' cholesterol), triglycerides and heart disease has been demonstrated."&nbsp;

<h2>So what is the best time to drink coffee or tea?</h2>

ICMR, the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination, and promotion of biomedical research, recommends that tea or coffee should not be consumed right before meals and says there should&nbsp;at least be a gap of&nbsp;one hour.

"Tea and coffee should be avoided at least for one hour before and after meals."

<h2>What else did ICMR say about tea?</h2>

While milk tea is widely consumed in Indian households, ICMR recommends that both tea and coffee are best had without milk.

"Besides caffeine, tea (green or black) contains theobromine and theophylline, which are known to relax arteries and thereby promote blood circulation. They also contain flavonoids and other antioxidant polyphenols, which may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stomach cancer. These benefits can be best obtained if milk is not added to tea and if it is taken in moderation," said ICMR.

Sex education in England's primary schools may soon see a ban for children under nine. As per a newly proposed guidance, "explicit" discussions such as those on topics like contraception could also be banned for those under 13 years of age.

<h2>The new sex education guidelines</h2>

The revised guidelines on relationships, sex and health education, as per The Guardian, are expected to be published this week by England's education secretary, Gillian Keegan.

Reports suggest that Keegan would recommend that schools be banned from teaching sex education of any type to children before year 5, when they are aged nine.

"Most schools are doing a great job, however, there have been many concerning reports, and these limits are based on advice from an expert panel," an unnamed Whitehall source told The Guardian.

However, schools will have the flexibility to discuss certain topics outside the proscribed age groups. This will be true only in certain circumstances, such&nbsp;as if a child shares an inappropriate image with the class, etc.

"It's never an easy balance to make to ensure children are both prepared but also able to remain children, but this guidance achieves that," added the source.

<h2>Parents to have a bigger say</h2>

Furthermore, the guidance will require schools to share all classroom materials with parents.

It might also potentially contain restrictions on teachings about gender and education.

As per the Daily Telegraph, while details were "still being finalised," the guidance will mandate that teachers say that there are two biological sexes.

It also makes clear that "gender ideology" involving discussions regarding changes in gender is a "contested subject".

These revised guidelines as per reports are far more detailed about what schools can and cannot teach in sex education up to the ages of 13, which would be year 9 in school. Sexual education before that is to be limited to "basic facts" of birth and conception, the importance of families, friendships etc.

Seeking to "challenge the history of art," two women sprayed the words "MeToo" on a 19th-century painting of a vagina titled "l'Origine du Monde". Along with the more than 150-year-old painting, they also tagged four other artworks.

The painting, whose name means "The Origin of the World" in English, is a nude painted by French artist Gustave Courbet in 1866.&nbsp;

It is currently displayed in Centre Pompidou in Paris, France, on loan from the Musee d'Orsay as part of an exhibition centred on French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, who once owned the painting, reports AFP.

<h2>Was the painting damaged beyond repair?</h2>

Thankfully, the work of art was protected by a glass pane. Despite that, as per AFP, police were on site to assess the damage.

The two women, identified only by their birth years — 1986 and 1993 — were arrested for spraying five artworks with the words "MeToo".&nbsp;

Another person, as per the report, escaped detention and is suspected to have stolen another artwork called "I Think Therefore I Suck," a piece by French artist Annette Messager.

French-Luxembourgish performance artist Deborah de Robertis in a conversation with WION said she had organised the spray painting as part of a performance titled: "You Don't Separate the Woman from the Artist".

She said that they were targeting famous paintings "because women are the origin of the world" and said the performance was carried out because "the very closed world of contemporary art has remained largely silent until now".

In an open letter, de Robertis denounced the behaviour of six men in the art world, and described them as "predators" and "censors".

To pacify the situation, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) had to step in. Police, as per Reuters, were responding to UCLA Chancellor Gene Block's request for support.

In a statement on X, LA police said, "At the request of UCLA, due to multiple acts of violence within the large encampment on their campus, the LAPD is responding to assist UCLA PD, and other law enforcement agencies, to restore order and maintain public safety."

The Arizona Senate on Wednesday (May 1) cleared the way for the repeal of the archaic six-week abortion ban that&nbsp;holds no exceptions for rape or incest.

After being passed in the Arizona Senate with&nbsp;an absolute majority of&nbsp;16–14 votes, the bid to overturn the stringent abortion ban that allows no exception&nbsp;is expected to be quickly signed by Governor Katie Hobbs, a Democrat.

As per Reuters,&nbsp;two Republican senators crossed party lines to vote in favour of repealing the state's 1864 ban on abortion.

Sensational and even salacious stories about North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in the Western media are nothing new. And now the British publication Daily Star is claiming that every year North Korea'S supreme leader chooses 25 virgin girls to join his "Pleasure Squad".

As per the report citing a North Korean defector, Yeonmi Park, these young girls are picked based on their attractiveness.&nbsp;

<h2>Scouting schoolgirls</h2>

Park, a 30-year-old who claims to have been scouted twice for the dubious honour of servicing Jong-un, said that to choose the virgins, the leader's 'cronies' visit "every classroom, and they even go to school yards in case they missed someone that was pretty".

"Once they find some pretty girls, the first thing they do is check into their family status—their political status. They eliminate any girls with family members that have escaped from North Korea, or have relatives in South Korea or other countries," she added.

<h2>Virginity test</h2>

Park has previously said that the Kim dynasty are "paedophiles who expect to be worshipped as gods."

She claims that once the pretty girls are selected,&nbsp;they are made to go through a virginity test. This, the report claimed, is a detailed medical examination where "even the smallest defect" like a minor scar, leads to disqualification.

The "handful of girls from all around North Korea" who clear all the tests are then sent to Pyongyang where they join the so-called pleasure squad and their "only reason to exist is to please the dictator".

She further revealed that the 'Pleasure Squad' is divided into three:&nbsp;one part is trained in massages, and the second specialises in entertaining through song and dance. The third division is the "sexual activities division," and has to be "sexually intimate with the dictator, and other men," said Park.

"They have to learn how to please these men—that's their only goal," she said, adding that the most beautiful girls are reserved to attend to the North Korean supreme leader.

The less stunning squad members are made to cater to the needs of lower-ranking generals and politicians.

<h2>Why do people allow this?</h2>

As per the North Korea defector, conditions in the nation are so grim that families happily allow their daughters to be recruited by the squad scouts because it would at least mean that the girls won't starve.

However, this is only true till the girls reach their mid-twenties. After that, they are married to Kim Jong-un's bodyguards, and this is considered a privilege.

<h2>How did this 'pleasure squad' start?</h2>

Apparently, this is not a Kim Jong-un thing. 'Pleasure Squads' have been around since the 1970s. Yeonmi Park claims that the previous leader Kim Jong Il believed that "having sexual intimacy with young teenage girls would give him immortality".

He devised the idea of these "Pleasure squads' in the 1970s when he would pick pretty girls and place them with his father Kim Il-sung, thinking "he might find that very pleasurable." This eventually helped him get the throne.

"So he picked beautiful women and put them in resorts that Kim Il-sung visited. Kim Il-sung was so touched that his son thought of his pleasure, and that's why he nominated Kim Jong Il as his successor," she claimed.

Soon after, in 1983, he created a similar squad for himself, and the "tradition" was carried forward by the current leader, claimed the report.

However, she said that the make-up of the Pleasure Squads has changed over the years as the three men have different tastes in women. She also said that, if rumours are to be believed, Kim Jong-un's "wife was originally in the Pleasure Squad".

Arizona abortion ban: Lawmakers vote 'yes' to repeal 160-year old near-complete abortion ban

A top Hamas official has stated that the militant group was ready to lay down arms for five years or more, if an independent Palestinian state is established along the pre-1967 borders.

This significant statement was made by Hamas political official Khalil al-Hayya during an interview with news agency Associated Press on Wednesday (Apr 24) in Istanbul. The top Hamas official also said that the group would convert into a political party.

<h2>A significant concession</h2>

As per the report, the suggestion that the Hamas would disarm appeared to be a "significant concession" by the militant group which is officially committed to Israel's destruction.

However, it is unlikely that Tel Aviv would even consider a truce. Israel, after the deadly Oct 7 attacks, had vowed to crush Hamas. Moreover, Israel's current leadership has been adamantly opposed to the creation of a Palestinian state on lands the nation captured during the 1967 Mideast war.

<h2>A 'fully sovereign Palestinian state'</h2>

Al-Hayya, who has previously represented the Palestinian militants in negotiations for a cease-fire and hostage exchange, said that Hamas would accept "a fully sovereign Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and the return of Palestinian refugees in accordance with the international resolutions".

He stated that if the demand is met, Hamas's military wing would dissolve, turning into a political party.

"All the experiences of people who fought against occupiers, when they became independent and obtained their rights and their state, what have these forces done? They have turned into political parties and their defending fighting forces have turned into the national army?".

AP reports that even as Hamas at times softens its public position about the possibility of a Palestinian state alongside Israel, it officially continues to reject "any alternative to the full liberation of Palestine, from the river to the sea". Here 'river to the sea' refers to the area reaching from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea — including lands that now make up Israel.

The Hamas leader, however, failed to explicitly specify whether the two-state solution would mean an end to the Palestinian-Israel conflict or if it would merely be an interim step towards Hamas' goal of destroying Israel.

Israel war: Hamas top official says militant group ready to lay down arms on one condition

Europe, as per a recent report, is increasingly facing bouts of heat so intense that the human body is unable to cope, and subsequently, deaths related to heat have increased by 30 per cent in the last 20 years.

On Monday (Apr 22), the EU's Copernicus climate monitoring service and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) noted that extreme heat poses particular health risks to outdoor workers, the elderly, and people with existing conditions like cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

<h2>Last year's extreme heatwave</h2>

In its report, Copernicus and WMO noted that in 2023, heatwaves pushed almost half — 41 per cent — of Southern Europe into strong, very strong or extreme heat stress. This, AFP reports, was the biggest area of Europe under such conditions in any day on record.

Last year, as far as the records go, was the hottest year globally, and Europe is the world's fastest-warming continent.

In July 2023, parts of Italy recorded a seven per cent increase in deaths. The victims included a 44-year-old man who, while painting road markings in the northern town of Lodi, collapsed and died.

Last year's extreme heatwave In its report, Copernicus and WMO noted that in 2023, heatwaves pushed almost half — 41 per cent — of Southern Europe into strong, very strong or extreme heat stress. This, AFP reports, was the biggest area of Europe under such conditions in any day on record. Last year, as far as the records go, was the hottest year globally, and Europe is the world's fastest-warming continent. The Arizona Supreme Court's April 9 decision to uphold a near-total abortion ban from the 19th century has led to days of national debate, and multiple attempts to overturn the ban. On Wednesday (Apr 17), the Arizona Republican control statehouse for the second time quashed efforts to overturn the ban.

Previously, on April 10, the statehouse had snubbed a similar attempt.

<h2>Snubbed again</h2>

In Wednesday's session, Republican members of the Arizona legislature blocked a procedural motion that would have allowed a vote on a bill aiming to repeal this stringent ban.&nbsp;

Despite bipartisan support from one Republican, Representative Matt Gress, and all 29 Democrats, the motion failed to pass with a 30-30 deadlock.&nbsp;

This marks the second failed attempt to repeal the 160-year-old ban, following a similar outcome last week.

Following the unsuccessful vote in the House, Democrats, led by Senator Anna Hernandez, are pushing forward with a Senate version of the repeal bill, which is expected to face several days of procedural hurdles.

Arizona's abortion rights advocates are also mobilising to introduce a ballot measure this November aimed at securing abortion rights within the state constitution.

<h2>Arizona's near total abortion ban law &nbsp;</h2>

Currently, Arizona enforces an abortion ban beyond 15 weeks of pregnancy. This is due to ongoing legal delays preventing the full implementation of the 1864 law.&nbsp;

The more than a century-old law holds no exceptions for rape or incest. It places a blanket ban and criminalises the medical procedure of abortion throughout pregnancy. The only exception is if the pregnancy puts the mother's life at risk.

<h2>Abortion rights and America</h2>

In America, the political landscape around abortion has become particularly charged since the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. This decision led to significant electoral repercussions for Republicans during the 2022 midterms and was credited with slowing a much-promised "red wave".

With the 2024 elections fast approaching, the voter temper in the 2022 midterms has also prompted several Republican leaders to shift their stance and be more moderate regarding abortion.

Notably, after the Arizona top court’s decision last week, Senator Shawnna Bolick, who is married to a Supreme Court Justice who supported the old ban, called on her colleagues to repeal the ban.

Even Donald Trump, who takes the credit for the overturning of Roe V. Wade, said that he believed the 1864 ban goes too far and suggested it will be "straightened out".

More than five decades after it happened, the killing of Hiran "Ross" Grayam, a decorated World War II veteran, has been solved after the murderer confessed from "beyond the grave".

In April 1968, Grayam, a Purple Heart recipient, was found shot dead next to his milk van in Florida. For around 56 years, the sheriff's office was unable to solve the murder and "his killer eluded justice".

<h2>What happened in 1968?</h2>

The WWII veteran, who had faced the horrors of the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of two concentration camps, had settled in Indian River County after the war.

In April 1968, as per a statement from the Indian River County Sheriff's Office, he set out on his familiar milk delivery route "unaware that it would be his last".

When he failed to return home that fateful day, a search was launched by the police and his milk truck was spotted from a plane in the Vero Beach area. His body was found next to the truck.

As per Indian River County sheriff Eric Flowers, first responders at the scene found Grayam "laying next to the milk truck with bullet wounds, killed execution-style".

OJ "The Juice" Simpson, one of the best and most popular athletes of the late 1960s and 1970s, on Wednesday (Apr 10) succumbed to prostate cancer.

Simpson, an American football star turned actor, has left behind a controversial legacy, that boasts of a gruesome murder, police chase and "the trial of the century". Let's have a look at who OJ Simpson was, and the biggest scandals surrounding him.

<h2>Who was OJ Simpson?</h2>

Born July 9, 1947, Orenthal James Simpson, aka OJ Simpson, entered the limelight for his football skills. Arguably one of the greatest running backs of all time, he played in the coveted National Football League (NFL) for eleven seasons, primarily with the team Buffalo Bills.

OJ Simpson boasts a career speckled with achievements, like the NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, the record for the single-season yards-per-game average at 143.1 and more.

The pro-athlete retired from football in 1979 and started a career in acting and broadcasting.

<h2>Double murder trial</h2>

On June 12, 1994, Nicole Brown Simpson, who was married to OJ Simpson from 1985 to 1992, was found stabbed to death outside her Los Angeles home. Alongside Simpson's ex-wife was her friend, waiter Ron Goldman, who was also murdered in the attack.

The former football star was charged the same month for the two murders.&nbsp;&nbsp;A highly publicised trial ensued.

It captured America's attention. The trial had everything: a rich celebrity defendant; a Black man accused of killing his white former wife out of jealousy; a woman slain after divorcing a man who had beaten her; and a "dream team" of pricy and charismatic defence lawyers.

Prosecutors argued that&nbsp;OJ killed his ex-wife in a jealous fury and presented as evidence blood, hair, and fibre tests linking him to the murders. Nevertheless, Simpson, who had already declared himself "absolutely 100 per cent not guilty," was acquitted of the charges on Oct 3, 1995, by a predominately black panel of 10 women and two men.

As per Reuters, the Goldman and Brown families subsequently pursued a wrongful death lawsuit against Simpson in civil court. In 1997, a predominately white jury in Santa Monica, California, found OJ Simpson liable for the two deaths and ordered him to pay $33.5 million in damages.

<h2>A heist and a kidnapping</h2>

Although the mega-star escaped prison during the murder trial of his ex-wife and her friend, jail time still awaited him. On October 3, 2008, he was sentenced to up to 33 years in prison for a slew of charges, including kidnapping and armed robbery.

The sentence was for an armed robbery OJ Simpson, along with five other men, armed with at least two guns, carried out in 2007 at a casino hotel in Las Vegas. The group stole sports memorabilia worth thousands of dollars from two dealers.

Simpson, at the trial, said he was only trying to recover his own property and claimed, "I didn't want to hurt anybody."

"I didn't know I was doing anything wrong," he added.

In 2017, he was released on parole and moved into a gated community in Las Vegas. Subsequently, in 2024, owing to 'good behaviour', he was granted early release from parole at age 74.

<h2>The OJ Prank Show</h2>

In 2006, in the era of pay-per-view and special-edition DVDs, OJ Simpson had a Punked-esque hidden-camera prank show called, 'Juiced.' Infiltrating a business, at times in disguise, the former footballer would provoke customers until they snapped for the punchline - "You've been juiced".

Allegedly, in one sketch, Simpson, as per the New York Post, allegedly visited a used-car lot to sell a white Ford Bronco — the car model he used to try to flee police in a dramatic slow-speed chase after the 1994 murder of his ex-wife Nicole.

In the sketch, he controversially joked, "It helped me get away".

<h2>'If I Did It': A murder confession?</h2>

In September 2007, OJ Simpson, along with ghostwriter Pablo Fenjves wrote a book titled, "OJ Simpson: If I Did It, Here’s How It Happened."

The duo put forward a hypothetical narrative of how the Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman's murders were carried out.&nbsp;

In the controversial novel, there's a chapter titled "The Night in Question" in which Simpson talks about being at Nicole's house the night of the murder with a friend "Charlie". He goes on to describe blacking out and coming to his senses with Nicole and Ron in "giant pools of blood".

<h2>Poking fun at tragedies: The 9/11 joke</h2>

In 2017, after being released on parole, Simpson made controversy with an awkward joke poking fun at the 9/11 tragedy.&nbsp;

While on the "It Is What It Is" podcast, he was discussing Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending Achilles tendon injury on the anniversary of the terrorist attack and said: "The Jets are still going to be good, and that kid [Zach Wilson] learned a lot from Aaron. Unfortunately, 9/11 is just a bad date for New York".

In 2017, he was released on parole and moved into a gated community in Las Vegas. Subsequently, in 2024, owing to 'good behaviour', he was granted early release from parole at age 74. The OJ Prank Show In 2006, in the era of pay-per-view and special-edition DVDs, OJ Simpson had a Punked-esque hidden-camera prank show called, 'Juiced.' Infiltrating a business, at times in disguise, the former footballer would provoke customers until they snapped for the punchline - "You've been juiced". In the sketch, he controversially joked, "It helped me get away". 'If I Did It': A murder confession? In September 2007, OJ Simpson, along with ghostwriter Pablo Fenjves wrote a book titled, "OJ Simpson: If I Did It, Here’s How It Happened." The duo put forward a hypothetical narrative of how the Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman's murders were carried out. In the controversial novel, there's a chapter titled "The Night in Question" in which Simpson talks about being at Nicole's house the night of the murder with a friend "Charlie". He goes on to describe blacking out and coming to his senses with Nicole and Ron in "giant pools of blood". Poking fun at tragedies: The 9/11 joke In 2017, after being released on parole, Simpson made controversy with an awkward joke poking fun at the 9/11 tragedy. (With inputs from agencies)

Arizona on Wednesday (Apr 10) snubbed discussions on a proposal to repeal the state's newly revived near-total abortion ban.

<h2>Shame! Shame!</h2>

CBS News reports that the Arizona legislature echoed with calls of "Shame! Shame!" as Republican lawmakers shut down attempts to open discussions on a repeal.

Reportedly, at least one Republican, alongside Democrats, tried to initiate the discussion on the repeal of the 1864 ban.

However, their attempts were cut off twice by GOP leaders, who then quickly adjourned the legislature for the week.

This prompted outraged Democrats to erupt into finger-waving chants of "Shame! Shame!," reports CBS News.

To this, Republicans accused the Democrats of "screaming at us and engaging in extremist and insurrectionist behaviour on the House floor."

<h2>Conflicting takes: Democrats vs Republicans</h2>

As per the report, Republican state Representative Teresa Martinez, the GOP House whip, remarked that there was no reason to rush the debate.

"We are navigating an extremely complex, emotional and important area of law and policy," said Martinez.

"In my opinion, removing healthy babies from healthy mothers is not health care nor reproductive care. Pregnancy is not an illness. It should be celebrated. It is an abortion that terminates life," she added.

Slamming the snub, Democratic Governor Katie Hobb said, "Radical legislators protected a Civil War-era total abortion ban that jails doctors, strips women of our bodily autonomy and puts our lives at risk."

Democratic representatives argue that the ban is "extreme" and will lead to deaths.

"We've got the eyes of the world watching Arizona right now," said Democratic state Representative Stephanie Stahl Hamilton.&nbsp;

"We know that the Supreme Court decision yesterday is extreme. And we know that should the 1864 ban on abortion remain a law in Arizona, people will die."

The more than a century-old law holds no exceptions for rape or incest. It criminalises the medical procedure of abortion throughout pregnancy. The only exception is if the pregnancy puts the mother's life at risk.

'Shame! Shame!': Arizona Republicans shut down attempts to repeal abortion ban

In China, doctors have successfully transplanted a pig's kidney with multiple gene edits into a brain-dead human recipient. The transplantation, as per reports, has been "working continuously for 13 days."

<h2>First time in China</h2>

This was the first of its kind operation in China and comes after similar transplants in the United States.

The procedure was done on March 25 by a team of doctors that only a couple of weeks back performed a successful pig liver transplant.

"As of April 7, the transplanted kidney has been working continuously for 13 days,"&nbsp;Qin Weijun, director of the Air Force Medical University Xijing Hospital, told Science and Technology Daily on Monday.

"It is functioning well in the recipient's body and producing urine normally."

To do this, scientists used CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing technology to add two human genes to the pig used in the transplant. Additionally, they removed three pig genes that can cause hyperacute rejection, said the university.

In both the cases — pig kidney and liver transplant — families of the patients agreed to the procedure to help advance medical science.

<h2>Why pig kidney transplants matter?</h2>

As per the South China Morning Post (SCMP), every year millions of patients in China suffer from end-stage kidney disease, for which the only solution is a kidney transplant. Yet, only about 10,000 transplants take place, reported the Air Force Medical University's Department of Urology in a WeChat post last week.

In such a scenario, xenogenic transplants, from one species to another, offer a solution. Pigs, who have similar metabolism&nbsp;and organ sizes as that of humans, are the first choice, as because of fears of higher risks of disease spreading, the US Food and Drug Administration has banned the use of monkeys.&nbsp;

However, there are some ethical concerns.

<h2>Ethical concerns over xenogenic transplants</h2>

These transplants, as per the report, come with an accelerated risk of acute rejection and the transfer of infectious diseases between the donor animal and humans.

Another concern raised by the animal rights movement is how these transplants ignore the rights of animals.&nbsp;
