Mamdani backs Netanyahu's arrest
Netanyahu is expected to reach New York on Thursday morning and address the UN General Assembly at 2 pm before returning to Israel shortly afterwards. His latest remarks came after Mamdani again spoke about the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against Netanyahu during a CNN interview on Monday. Mamdani said he believes Netanyahu to be “a war criminal and an architect of a horrific genocide of the Palestinian people.” In July, Mamdani had examined whether he could arrest Netanyahu under the ICC warrant. He later concluded that he did not have the legal authority to do so, while maintaining that Netanyahu was "not welcome" in New York City. “I do believe that that is something that should be honoured," he told CNN, "because what we want to see, and we’ve been talking about this today, is a faith in our politics, a faith in accountability.” "If the International Criminal Court deems someone worthy of an arrest because of a violation of those laws, then who are we to say that anyone should be above that? And I think very clearly that everyone should be held accountable to it," he added Also Read: China slams US sanctions on Iranian airlines as ‘illegal’ ahead of Trump-Xi summit
Israeli envoy backs Netanyahu
Israeli Consul-General in New York Ofir Akunis also criticised Mamdani in a post on X, accusing the mayor of spreading antisemitism. "Mamdani continues doing the only thing he knows how to do: incitement and the spreading of lies and blood libels against the State of Israel: classic antisemitism," Akunis wrote. "Once again, not a single word about the savage and monstrous massacre of October 7 committed by the barbaric people who invaded Israel from Gaza." "The Prime Minister of Israel will arrive in New York City, address the UN, and tell the entire world who the Ayatollahs, Hezbollah, and Hamas truly are: enemies of the United States and the West." The exchange between Netanyahu and Mamdani comes as the Israeli prime minister prepares for his UN address in New York, with their opposing positions on the ICC warrant adding to the dispute ahead of his visit.

Mamdani still mulling Netanyahu's arrest during UN meet, says 'discussing it with law department'

Two men have been charged with multiple federal offenses after authorities say they threw homemade explosive devices during protests near the home of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. According to a criminal complaint filed in federal court, Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, face charges including providing material support to a terrorist organisation and using a weapon of mass destruction. They are also charged with transportation of explosive materials, unlawful possession of destructive devices, and interstate transportation and receipt of explosives. Investigators said the incident happened on Saturday during a confrontation between anti-Islam protesters and counterprotesters near the mayor’s residence. Body-worn camera footage cited in the complaint shows that as Kayumi was being placed into an NYPD vehicle after his arrest, “a person in the crowd asked why he’d done this,” and Kayumi responded with “ISIS,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a Monday afternoon press conference. After waiving his Miranda rights, Kayumi told investigators, “He had watched ISIS propaganda on his phone and that his actions that day were partly inspired by ISIS,” Tisch said. Balat also made statements to officers without being questioned. According to Tisch, he said, “This isn’t a religion that just stands when people talk about the blessed name of the Prophet. We take action … If I didn’t do it someone else will come and do it.” Also Read: ‘Many surprises in store,’ warns Iran as it blames Trump’s ‘Operation Epic Mistake’ for surging oil prices

Authorities say Balat also told investigators he had pledged allegiance to the extremist group, according to the court document. Law enforcement later asked Balat whether he was familiar with the Boston Marathon bombing and if that was what he hoped to accomplish. Balat replied, “No, even bigger. It was only three deaths,” the complaint states. “These were ISIS-inspired actions, and it is chilling that they wanted to do something more than the Boston Marathon, more than three deaths,” Jay Clayton, US attorney for the Southern District of New York, said at the press conference.Police said the first improvised explosive device was thrown during the protest but did not explode. Officials said the same suspect then lit a second device, dropped it in the street and ran. That device also failed to detonate. “Preliminary test results determined that these were not hoax devices, nor smoke bombs. They were improvised explosive devices that could have caused serious injury or death,” Tisch said at a news conference on Monday morning with the mayor. https://www.wionews.com/videos/trump-eyes-special-forces-strike-to-seize-iran-s-nuclear-stockpile-1773080059862/embed A third device was discovered on Sunday is also being investigated “in connection with” Saturday’s incident, according to the NYPD. Tisch said the third device tested negative for explosive material. The protest was organised by a right-wing provocateur and drew a smaller anti-Islam crowd, which was outnumbered by more than 100 counter protesters, officials said. Police said the suspects entered New York City via the George Washington Bridge and were arrested about an hour later after the devices were thrown. Tisch said neither suspect has a prior criminal record. The incident occurred during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Mamdani, the city’s first Muslim mayor, said he and his wife, Rama Duwaji, were not at Gracie Mansion at the time. “The police department has determined that these were improvised explosive devices made to injure, maim or worse,” Mamdani said. “Anyone who comes to New York City to bring violence to our streets will be held accountable in accordance with the law.”
