India's premier investigative agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on Sunday (June 30) arrested the owner of a private school from the western state of Gujarat in connection with alleged malpractices in the NEET-UG exam. Dixit Patel was detained from his residence and the CBI was taking him to Ahmedabad for interrogation and seeking remand from the court.

Public prosecutor Rakesh Thakor earlier said the Gujarat government has handed over the case to CBI, prompting the federal agency to step up the investigation.

“As the case has been handed over to the CBI by the Gujarat government, a CBI team will produce him (Dixit Patel) before a designated court in Ahmedabad to seek his remand,” Thakor said.

Patel reportedly ran Jay Jalaram School in Godhra. It was one of the designated exam centres where the NEET-UG exam, now marred in allegations of rigging and question paper leak, was held on May 5. There are allegations that the school emerges as the fulcrum of all exam-related malpractices and fraud.

According to a report by The Hindu, the school principal demanded $12,000 (INR 10 lakh) from the students to help them clear the test. He is the sixth person to be arrested in the case.

Since Haque was the city coordinator appointed by NTA, he informed the officials at the other five centres in Hazaribagh. Vishwa Ranjan, NTA's observer and Imtiyaz Alam, superintendent at Oasis School confirmed this.&nbsp;

The officials use a sharp object to cut open the cardboard box. The aluminium box contains two locks- the manual one is opened using a key while the digital lock unlocks automatically 45 minutes before the examination.&nbsp;

Anurag Yadav gave a detailed statement to the police in which he wrote, "I was made to read and memorise it at night. When I went for the exam, I found the same questions which I had memorised correctly. After the exam, the police came and caught me, and I confessed my crime."

Meanwhile, Sikandar Yadavendu claimed that Nitish Kumar and Amit Anand boasted before him that they could leak any question paper of any competitive exam in the country and it would cost INR 30-32 lakh ($38,000) for any NEET aspirant to clear the exam.

NEET aspirants have approached India's apex court to seek justice and make the National Testing Agency and the central government come clean. On Thursday (Jun 20), the Supreme Court stayed the ongoing proceedings related to the NEET controversy in three high courts as it listed the matter for hearing on July 8.

Earlier on June 18, the court said that even if there was "0.001 per cent negligence" on the part of anyone in the conduct of the examination, it should be thoroughly dealt with.

The NTA conducts all India pre-medical entrance tests.

Media reports citing officials from the EOU said 13 people, including four students, have been arrested for their suspected involvement in the alleged leak and some have also been accused of receiving the question papers ahead of the test.&nbsp;

Additional Director General of Police, EOU, N H Khan told the Indian Express, that they had asked a set of questions to the National Testing Agency (NTA), which organises the NEET exam, and while they might have some follow-ups to their questions, their investigation is “very much suggestive of a paper leak.”

A report by Times of India, citing EOU Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Manavjeet Singh Dhillon said that they recovered a list of the 13 people from a “safe house” located on the outskirts of Patna.&nbsp;

The police also&nbsp;believe that around 30 medical aspirants had reportedly been summoned by people they described as the “exam mafia” to receive questions and answers ahead of the exam.&nbsp;

Dhillon claimed that four arrested candidates had “confessed” during interrogation that the questions were identical to those they had received at the “safe house” on May 4, according to TOI.&nbsp;

In light of the media reports and nationwide protests by&nbsp;students, Indian Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, on Friday (Jun 14) said issues were witnessed in six of the over 4,700 centres where the exam was conducted, but otherwise, NEET was conducted satisfactorily across the country.&nbsp;

He also went on to deny the allegations of corruption in NTA and that the paper was leaked, but added that if anything is proven, “no one will be spared”. Pradhan said that they are looking into every aspect and those responsible for the lapses will be held accountable.&nbsp;

NEET UG result row: Bihar police say evidence found suggests paper leak

The National Testing Agency (NTA) stated on Saturday that the education ministry has formed a four-person panel to examine the grace marks given to over 1,500 applicants in the&nbsp;National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test NEET-UG medical entrance test.

Despite&nbsp;problems&nbsp;impacting&nbsp;almost&nbsp;1,600&nbsp;applicants,&nbsp;NTA&nbsp;Director&nbsp;General&nbsp;Subodh&nbsp;Kumar&nbsp;Singh&nbsp;claimed during a&nbsp;press&nbsp;conference&nbsp;on Saturday (June 8) that&nbsp;the&nbsp;integrity&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;test&nbsp;had&nbsp;not&nbsp;been&nbsp;compromised. &nbsp;

Singh&nbsp;said,&nbsp;“If needed, results will be revised for 1,600 candidates based on the committee’s recommendations.”

On May 5, more than 24 lakh students gave the NEET UG 2024 exam, which was held at 4,750 locations across 571 cities. Out of them, just 1,600 test takers from six different locations experienced issues.

”Initially, 17 students were in the topper list. Due to a Physics answer challenge, 44 candidates scored between 715 to 720, increasing the number of toppers to 61,” Singh explained.

The issues included inaccurate question paper distribution and damaged OMR sheets, which caused applicants to lose time during the examination. Following that, these applicants went to the High Courts, requesting a retest or compensation for time lost. The petitions were dismissed when the courts were notified of the committee's formation.

The committee then recommended that the impacted students get compensation marks. The committee of four members, under the direction of a former UPSC chairperson, will examine the Bahadurgarh centre in Haryana, which is one of the six affected centers. Officials noted that the compensating marks awarded will be consistent with the Supreme Court judgment of June 13, 2018.

There were rumors of a NEET UG paper leak before the NTA conducted the test. On May 5, the NTA conducted the medical admission exam according to schedule, despite allegations. The NEET 2024 results were revealed ten days earlier than planned.

In addition, because wrong question papers were sent, the NTA scheduled a re-examination at Girls Higher Secondary Model School in Mantown, Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan, for 120 students. “At a single examination center in Haryana, 8 students scored above 718, with 6 achieving 720/720, indicating blatant manipulation of results,” the All India Students Union (AISU) said.

The plea filed by BJP State General Secretary Karu Nagarajan called the nine-member AK Rajan committee unconstitutional, illegal, unfair and unreasonable. Nagarajan's plea wanted the court to restrain the committee from proceeding further. It added that as per the 2017 Supreme Court ruling, the Tamil Nadu government was required to implement the NEET exam for medical entrance.

During the hearing of this plea, the court questioned the Tamil Nadu government over whether it had sought or obtained the permission of the Supreme Court in this matter, as forming such a committee would be against the Supreme Court’s orders.&nbsp;

Appearing on behalf of the state government, Advocate General Shanmugasundaram submitted that the committee formation was a policy decision taken by the government. He added that it was also backed by the DMK manifesto and the people's demand. Responding to this, the first bench of Justices Sanjib Banerjee and Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy said, "May be, but if it is contrary to the Supreme Court order, then it cannot be permitted".&nbsp;

It was the ruling DMK’s election promise to abolish NEET, if voted to power. DMK President MK Stalin had said that a law would be passed in the State Assembly to abolish NEET, following which the Indian President's assent would be sought.

The case will be heard next on July 05.

Apparently upset over her inability to clear the NEET examination, a girl allegedly committed suicide here, the second medical aspirant to end her life in Tamil Nadu this week.

Subasri who could only score 24 in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for medical courses was feeling very depressed in the past few days and hanged herself in her house here last night, police said.

Her parents broke open the door of the room and rushed her to a hospital where she died without responding to treatment this morning.

The death of Subasri comes days after 19-year old Prateebha, academically 'bright' daughter of a farmhand, allegedly ended her life in Villupuram district after failure to clear the NEET, setting off a political blame game over the test.

Opposition parties led by DMK raised Prateebha's death in the ongoing assembly session while its leader M K Stalin urged chief ministers of other southern states and West Bengal to oppose the NEET saying it discriminated against non-Hindi speaking students.

The state government has said it continued to oppose NEET and recalled its efforts to secure an exemption for Tamil Nadu such as adopting resolutions in the assembly in this regard.

Police said Subasri who was nurturing an ambition to join MBBS scored only 907 marks out of 1200 in the Class XII exam but was hopeful of clearing the NEET as she had attended coaching classes.

But, the poor marks in the NEET shocked and saddened her and she was feeling very anguished since then, they said.

Subasri's father Kannan, a transport corporation employee, and mother had tried to pacify her and asked her not to worry and tried to divert her attention by taking her outside, including the temple, they said.

But she felt very ashamed and depressed. She went inside her room last night when her mother was cooking and hanged herself, they said, adding her body was handed over to her parents after post-mortem today.

State Transport Minister M R Vijaya Baskar visited the bereaved family and offered his condolences.

Kannan said his daughter was dreaming to study medicine and offer service to the poor. Despite her hard work, she could not clear NEET, he said.

This is the third suicide of a student over NEET in Tamil Nadu since last year. Anitha, a Dalit girl from Ariyalur, ended her life for failing to clear the NEET last year.
