The CJI also said the cancellation of the massive examination, taken by 2.4 million students, was not appropriate. "Cancelling the examination for 24 lakh students is an option of last resort and should be considered only under extreme circumstances," he added.

The CJI also bombarded the National Testing Agency (NTA) with a series of questions and sought its answers by 5pm on Wednesday (Jul 10).

The following are the questions that were asked by the CJI:

-When were the question papers prepared?

- When did the NTA receive these question papers?

- How were the papers secured during their custody?

- When did the NTA dispatch the papers to the designated banks in the cities?

- Which printing press was used and what were the transportation arrangements?

Additionally, the court asked the examination body to make full disclosure in the matter regarding:

-When the leak took place.

-The manner in which the question papers were leaked and disseminated.

-Duration between leak and conduct of the examination.

<h2>SC instructions to CBI</h2>

The CJI instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to provide evidence on the timing and methods of the alleged paper leak before the court. The court also asked the central government to explore the feasibility of employing data analytics to distinguish between tainted and untainted students.

Patel reportedly ran Jay Jalaram School in Godhra. It was one of the designated exam centres where the NEET-UG exam, now marred in allegations of rigging and question paper leak, was held on May 5. There are allegations that the school emerges as the fulcrum of all exam-related malpractices and fraud.

According to a report by The Hindu, the school principal demanded $12,000 (INR 10 lakh) from the students to help them clear the test. He is the sixth person to be arrested in the case.

NEET controversy:&nbsp;The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) controversy took a new turn Thursday (Jun 20) after reports emerged that an aspirant from the eastern Indian state of Bihar has admitted to having received question papers a day before the examination was conducted. This comes after four individuals—Anurag Yadav,&nbsp;Sikandar Yadavendu (aspirants),&nbsp;Nitish Kumar and&nbsp;Amit Anand (accused of leaking paper)—were arrested by Bihar Police's Economic Offences Unit last week in connection with the case.

Yadav, a 22-year-old aspirant, admitted before the police that he got the question paper a day before and was told to memorise it. He confirmed that the question paper that was leaked a day before was genuine, directly disputing a union minister's claim.

India's Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan last week rejected the allegations of rigging and instead blamed the opposition for spreading lies.

<h2>Massive revelation by candidates</h2>

Anurag Yadav gave a detailed statement to the police in which he wrote, "I was made to read and memorise it at night. When I went for the exam, I found the same questions which I had memorised correctly. After the exam, the police came and caught me, and I confessed my crime."

Meanwhile, Sikandar Yadavendu claimed that Nitish Kumar and Amit Anand boasted before him that they could leak any question paper of any competitive exam in the country and it would cost INR 30-32 lakh ($38,000) for any NEET aspirant to clear the exam.

He also said that he was arrested the next day during a vehicle check with the admit cards of all four students.

The central government has now demanded a detailed report on the aspirant's confession from Bihar police.

<h2>Supreme Court stays proceedings in 3 high courts</h2>

NEET aspirants have approached India's apex court to seek justice and make the National Testing Agency and the central government come clean. On Thursday (Jun 20), the Supreme Court stayed the ongoing proceedings related to the NEET controversy in three high courts as it listed the matter for hearing on July 8.

Earlier on June 18, the court said that even if there was "0.001 per cent negligence" on the part of anyone in the conduct of the examination, it should be thoroughly dealt with.

The NTA conducts all India pre-medical entrance tests.
