India's Education Ministry has told NCERT to check textbooks every year before printing new ones for each academic year. This will make sure any needed changes are made in time.

The NCERT releases new textbooks annually before the start of the academic year. Although there isn't a set requirement to review textbooks each year, the Council has been updating content since 2017. In 2022-2023, significant changes were made as part of a syllabus revision in order to ease&nbsp;student stress during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Ministry has told the NCERT that books should be reviewed on a yearly basis. They are soon going to put that system in place. It is important that when a student buys a book ahead of the new session it has to be the updated version of that book,” said an official, as quoted by ANI.

Explaining the reason behind it, the official said, “NCERT books once published should not remain the same for many years. They should be reviewed every year before printing and if any changes have to be made or some new facts have to be added, they should be included in the books. For instance, topics like Artificial Intelligence (AI) that are evolving. So far, there had been no mandate of yearly review of the textbooks.”

As per the official mentioned, it will require a minimum of two years to publish textbooks for all classes in accordance with the new National Curriculum Framework (NCF).

This year, NCERT is updating textbooks to match the new National Curriculum Framework (NCF) from last year, following the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

So far, only new textbooks for classes 3rd and 6th have been released in line with the NCF. The revisions include hefty changes in History, Political Science, and Sociology textbooks. Some topics like Babri Masjid, Hindutva politics, the 2002 Gujarat riots, and minorities have been removed.

The Article(1) of the Constitution defines the name of the country as “India, that is Bharat shall be a Union of States.”

The calls for changing the name of India to Bharat have been made from the top leadership. In September this year, during the G20 Leaders Summit, Prime Minster Narendra Modi’s name plate was displayed as ‘Bharat’ during the summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.&nbsp;

<h2>Renaming ‘India’ as ‘Bharat’ in NCERT books</h2>

As per one of the panel members, CI Issac, the new NCERT books will have the name change of the country. The proposal was put forth some months ago and has now been accepted, Issac said as reported by ANI.

Apart from renaming India as Bharat, the NCERT committee has also recommended highlighting “Hindu victories” in the textbooks. It has also recommended introducing ‘classical history’ instead of ‘ancient history’ in the textbooks.

Issac said history will no longer be divided into ancient, medieval and modern as it was done by the British, which showed India in darkness, unaware of scientific progress and knowledge.

The committee also put forth the&nbsp;idea to introduce the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) into the curriculum of all subjects.&nbsp;

<h2>NCERT's response on panel recommendations</h2>

NCERT responded to panel's recommendations and clarified that it is "premature to comment" as the education board hasn't considered anything as of yet.&nbsp;

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) grabbed headlines last year after reports emerged that it has dropped a few important chapters from the Class 10 syllabus.

Hence, those who have reached class 10th this year will find it a bit different to what their seniors read — a change that will impact some 134 million 11–18-year-olds in schools across the nation.

A report, first published by Nature, stated that a chapter on evolution would be cut from the syllabus&nbsp;after people protested last month, but in addition to that the periodic table has also been dropped from the syllabus of class 10th. The report also mentioned that topics such as sources of energy and environmental sustainability have also been dropped.&nbsp;

In recent months, NCERT has focused on the rationalisation of syllabi&nbsp;to bring about necessary changes. The process means the board removes certain topics from its textbooks.&nbsp;

In June 2022, NCERT deleted certain topics from Class 10 textbooks, saying, "In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is imperative to reduce the content load on students."&nbsp;Reports say&nbsp;that the changes were announced last year, but the books with updated chapters are only now circulating in the market.&nbsp;

Initially, it was meant for children studying online, but now&nbsp;NCERT has decided to continue with the deletions of topics. &nbsp;

<h2>Why did NCERT remove those topics?&nbsp;</h2>

In a document, titled "List of Rationalised Content in Textbooks for Class X", the government organisation gave an explanation for the action.

On its website, NCERT also stated that it considered whether content overlapped with similar content covered elsewhere, or in the higher class. They also considered the difficulty of the content, and whether the content was irrelevant. The government organisation also noted that the change will help provide opportunities for experiential learning and creativity.&nbsp;

The move means those who would opt for science as a subject in class 11, will study the periodic table in Chemistry in NCERT books.&nbsp;

The NCERT has dropped references to the demand for a separate Sikh nation Khalistan from the class 12 Political Science textbook following objections from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), according to top education ministry officials.

The SGPC had last month alleged that the NCERT&nbsp;misrepresented historical details about Sikhs in its Class 12 political science textbook.

The Sikh body's objection pertained to the mention of the Anandpur Sahib resolution in the book "Politics In India Since Independence".

Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar on Saturday announced that the&nbsp;NCERT syllabus would be reduced by almost half from the 2019 academic session.

The decision was taken in a bid to provide relief to school students, who complained of existing vast syllabus.

Divulging details of the decision, Javadekar said the school syllabus was more than that of BA and B.Com courses, and it needed to be reduced by half so that students get time for other activities for their all-round development.

&quot;At the stage of development of cognitive skills, students need to be given full freedom. I have asked NCERT to reduce the syllabus by half and it will be effective from the 2019 academic session,&quot; Javadekar said.&nbsp;

Elaborating on the reforms in school education under consideration, the minister said examinations and detentions would be introduced.

He said a Bill in this regard will be considered in Parliament in the next part of the Budget Session.

&quot;Without examination, there is no competition and no target. There must be an element of competition for better outcomes,&quot; he said.

If a student fails in March, he would get another chance in May.

If a student flunks both the times, then only he or she would be detained.

Javadekar also expressed concern&nbsp;over the poor quality of teachers, which he said was resulting in poor learning outcomes.

&quot;The basic task of teachers is to assess the strengths and weaknesses of students and mentor them accordingly,&quot; he added.

He also informed that under the Right to Education Act, 20 lakh teachers were to be trained by 2015 but only five lakh of them could be covered.

Over 14 lakh teachers were undergoing a skill upgradation programme.&nbsp;
