The stray Russian aircraft had failed to communicate with the air traffic control in Estonia. Two Typhoon jets, one British and one German, were launched to intercept the Russian Il-78 Midas refuelling plane that was flying between St Petersburg and Kaliningrad. After the Midas aircraft was escorted, the two jets were redirected to intercept an An-148 airliner that had also strayed close to the Estonian airspace. Though the interception of the enemy aircraft was routine, it was the first instance when the two countries collaborated to carry out the operation. Notably, British and German air forces are currently conducting joint NATO operations in the region. "As a fighter pilot, this was a routine business, even though I was flying alongside a German colleague," an unnamed pilot of the Typhoon squadron was quoted as saying by Sky UK. The incident comes on the same day as the US military's European Command claimed that a Russian Su-27 jet fighter collided with an American MQ-9 Reaper drone. "Our MQ-9 aircraft was conducting routine operations in international airspace when it was intercepted and hit by a Russian aircraft, resulting in a crash and complete loss of the MQ-9," informed General James Hecker, the commander of US Air Forces Europe and Air Forces Africa. Earlier this week, Finland said it also expected a visit from a Hungarian delegation.&nbsp;

The two Nordic countries applied to join the intergovernmental military alliance last year due to Russia's offensive in Ukraine. Hungary and Turkey are the only NATO members who do not yet have ratified the bids.

Sweden has been facing objections from Turkey (to join NATO), which accused Stockholm of harbouring members of Kurdish terrorist groups. While Turkey indicated that it could approve Finland's application, it gave no assurances that it would greenlight Sweden's bid. The United States and others hope that the two Nordic countries will be a part of NATO at a summit in Lithuania in July.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, Hungarian lawmakers started debating NATO bids for Sweden and Finland with voting to take place from March 20, after it was initially scheduled for March 6-9. Opposition MP Agnes Vadai called the ruling party Fidesz's internal debate a mere tactic to delay the ratification, the news agency AFP reported.&nbsp;

Also on Wednesday, Swedish Defence Minister Pal Jonson said that his country joining NATO along with Finland was a major unexpected consequence for Russia.&nbsp;

Speaking to reporters in Estonia, Jonson said, "If Moscow had one strategic goal with my country and with Finland, I think it was to keep us outside of NATO. Three months after this war started, Sweden and Finland&nbsp;applied hand-in-hand for NATO membership. That is the mother of all unintended consequences for Russian geostrategic thinking, believe me,"&nbsp;Reuters reported.&nbsp;

Hungarian MPs plan to visit Sweden on March 7 to discuss NATO bid: Stockholm

The Finland parliament on Wednesday (March 1) overwhelmingly gave a green light and acceleration to the bid of joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The move by parliament has increased the prospects that Finland will leave its neighbour Sweden behind and become a member of the pact earlier.&nbsp;

The legislation was approved as lawmakers affirmed that the nation has accepted the terms of the NATO Treaty by 184 votes against seven in the 200-seat parliament. One abstained.&nbsp;

Finnish lawmakers have pushed for the legislation to be passed before the general elections on April 2 to avoid a political vacuum. Notably, the process of joining NATO requires ratification from all of its 30 members.&nbsp;

Passing the bill does not mean that Finland will automatically join NATO after ratification by Turkey and Hungary, but it puts in place a deadline for how long it can wait for its neighbour.&nbsp;

A vote on the bill will then take place on Wednesday, and is expected to sail through without much opposition, as the initial membership bid in May was backed by 188 of the 200 members in parliament.

Once the bill is approved by the parliament, it will be sent to the president, whose signature is required to formalise the bidding process.

After the president has signed the law, Finland will submit the instruments of accession to Washington.

Many MPs have been looking to push through the legislation for the NATO membership bid expeditiously before Finland goes into polls on April 2.

Erdogan had said that Turkey won’t support Sweden’s ascension bid to NATO, and demanded that they extradite dozens of suspects, which it considers “terrorists", including the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

Finland, on the other hand, was viewed favourably by Turkey, with its Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Monday saying, "We may separate Sweden and Finland's membership process.”

He also said Western allies should consider how to ensure that Russia pays towards the reconstruction of Ukraine once the war has ended, and said the global community needed to recognize that a new framework was required to maintain long-term security.

Though the UK so far refused to send fighter jets, but Sunak said last week that Britain could help in other ways as he said that the nation would help other countries which were willing to send aircraft to Ukraine.&nbsp;

He held Russia accountable for war crimes in Bucha, Irpin and Mariupol.&nbsp;

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has urged the alliance member countries to ramp up ammunition production for Ukraine while warning that Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing fresh attacks against the embattled country.&nbsp;

Speaking to reporters in Brussels on Monday, Stoltenberg said that Ukraine's consumption of ammunition is much greater than the production capacity of the collective West.&nbsp;

He added that it represents not only a challenge to Kyiv, but also to NATO, given that it also means its own stockpiles are being depleted.&nbsp;

“The urgent issue right now is to deliver what has always been promised”, namely armoured vehicles, including German Marders and US Bradleys, Leopard battle tanks and others. &nbsp;

“We need the training, we need the equipment, we need the ammunition and that’s exactly what allies are now providing and will be a top issue at the meetings today here at&nbsp;NATO,” he added.&nbsp;

According to the Associated Press news agency,&nbsp;Ukraine&nbsp;is consuming 6,000-7,000 artillery shells a day, about a third of the number Russia is using.&nbsp;

The member countries have assembled in Brussels for the ninth meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, which focuses on providing support to Ukraine in its war against Russia.&nbsp;

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, who is also participating in the meeting, said he expects to see Ukraine conduct an offensive in the spring.&nbsp;

“What Ukraine wants to do at the first possible moment is to establish or create momentum and establish conditions on the battlefield that continue to be in its favour,” he said in a news conference in Brussels on Tuesday.&nbsp;

“And so, we expect to see them conduct an offensive sometime in the spring and because of that we are, we all of the partners in the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, have been working hard to ensure that they have the armoured capability, the fires, the sustainment to be able to be effective in creating the effects on the battlefield that they want to create,” he said. &nbsp;&nbsp;
