<p>Biden assured that the US will stay committed to NATO. "I absolutely guarantee it," he said when asked about US commitment to NATO given political instability in the US. Biden's predecessor, former president Donald Trump had threatened to take the US out of NATO.</p>

<p>"No one can guarantee the future, but this is the best bet anyone could make," Biden said.</p>

<p>Biden, a Democrat, is running again for president in 2024 and is likely to face Donald Trump as an opponent.</p>

<h2><strong>Putin has 'lost the war'</strong></h2>

<p>"Putin's already lost the war," Biden told the news conference after talks with Nordic leaders. "There is no possibility of him winning the war in Ukraine."</p>

<p>The US president hinted that Ukrainian counterattack against the Russian forces may bring Russia to the negotiation table.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On the issue of nuclear weapons, Biden said there was no 'real prospect' of Putin using them.</p>

<p>Finland recently joined NATO after changing its stance of military non-alignment. Finland's inclusion has roughly doubled the length of border NATO shares with Russia.</p>

<p>During the press conference, Biden welcomed the prospects of Sweden joining NATO.</p>

<p>Sweden had applied to join NATO along with Finland. However, Sweden's bid was held up by Turkey, which maintained Sweden was doing too little against people Ankara sees as terrorists.</p>

<p>Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan dropped objections to its application this week.</p>

<p>Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson thanked Biden for his support in the country's push to join NATO.</p>

<h2><strong>Prigozhin should be 'careful'</strong></h2>

<p>In an apparent hint that Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin may be assassinated after his short-lived mutiny against Russian President Vladimir Putin, Biden said that he needs to be 'careful' about his food.</p>

<p>"God only knows what he's likely to do. We're not even sure where he is and what relationship he has. If I were he, I'd be careful what I ate. I'd keep my eye on my menu," Biden said.</p>

<h2><strong>Not Biden's first gaffe</strong></h2>

<p>This is not the first instance when Biden has committed such an error. Last month, a confused Biden mistook Iraq for Ukraine twice in under 12 hours.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Putin is clearly losing the war in Iraq," said Biden during one of his correspondence with the reporters in the White House.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Similarly, during his State of the Union address last year, Biden referred to "Ukrainians" as "Iranians".</p>

<p>In an interview with CNN, Biden seemingly confirmed that Ukraine will not receive NATO membership unless the war with Russia was over.</p>

<p>“I don’t think there is unanimity in NATO about whether or not to bring Ukraine into the NATO family now, at this moment, in the middle of a war,” said Biden.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“For example, if you did that, then, you know – and I mean what I say – we’re determined to commit every inch of territory that is NATO territory. It’s a commitment that we’ve all made no matter what. If the war is going on, then we’re all in war. We’re at war with Russia, if that were the case.”</p>

<p>The communique released by NATO heads of state and governments participating in the meeting&nbsp;stated that Ukraine would only join the alliance "when allies agree and conditions are met".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ukraine has been pushing for rapid membership while fighting a Russian invasion unleashed in February 2022 that has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions.</p>

<p>Instead, a declaration by the G7 group of the world's most industrialised countries launched a framework for bilateral negotiations to provide military and financial support, intelligence sharing and a promise of immediate steps if Russia should attack again.</p>

<p>Swallowing his disappointment over the lack of a membership timetable, Zelensky hailed NATO's "practical and unprecedented support for Ukraine" and said that at the summit Ukraine had obtained "unambiguous clarity that Ukraine will be in NATO".</p>

<p>He tweeted: "I believe we will be in NATO once the security situation stabilises. Put simply, when the war is over, Ukraine will be invited into NATO and Ukraine will clearly become a member of the Alliance. I felt no thoughts of any other sort."</p>

<p>At a meeting with Zelensky, Biden promised him the US&nbsp;was doing everything it could to meet Ukraine's needs and acknowledged Zelensky's frustration about the scale and speed of support.</p>

<p>US&nbsp;National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan had said Biden would discuss the issue of long-range missiles with Zelensky when they met.</p>

Speaking to reporters later, Biden said: "One thing Zelensky understands now is that whether or not he's in NATO now is not relevant" as long as he has the commitments that have been made at the summit. "He's not concerned about that now."</p>

<p>Zelensky told Biden he wanted to thank "all Americans" for the billions of dollars in aid his country had received.</p>

<p>British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said he had told Ukraine that its international allies were "not Amazon" and Kyiv needed to show gratitude for weapons donations to persuade Western politicians to give more.</p>

<p>Zelensky said: "We were always grateful to the UK, prime ministers and the minister of defence because the people are always supporting us."</p>

<p>Britain, France, Germany and the US&nbsp;have been negotiating with Kyiv for weeks over a broad international framework of support, encompassing modern advanced military equipment such as fighter jets, training, intelligence-sharing and cyber defence.</p>

<p>In return, Ukraine would pledge better governance, including through judicial and economic reforms and enhanced transparency.</p>

<p>The first sitting of a new NATO-Ukraine Council was also held on Wednesday, a format designed to tighten cooperation between Kyiv and the 31-nation alliance.</p>

<h2><strong>'Potentially very dangerous'</strong></h2>

<p>NATO is built around mutual security guarantees whereby an attack on one is an attack on all, and it has carefully avoided extending any firm military commitments to Ukraine, worried it would risk taking it closer to a full-on war with Russia.</p>

<p>Ukraine has been wary of any less-binding security "assurances", given Russia's invasion already trampled the so-called Budapest Memorandum under which international powers committed to keeping the country safe in exchange for Kyiv giving up its Soviet-era nuclear arms.</p>

<p>Speaking earlier alongside Zelensky, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Ukraine was closer to the alliance than ever before and brushed aside new warnings from Russia about the consequences of supporting Ukraine.</p>

<p>British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the security arrangements for Ukraine were not designed to be a substitute for full NATO membership and said the commitments at the summit marked a high point for the West's support for Kyiv.</p>

<p>Russia, which says NATO's eastward expansion is an existential threat to its own security, swiftly lashed out.</p>

<p>Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was "potentially very dangerous" for the West to give Ukraine security guarantees.</p>

<p>The Russian foreign ministry said the summit showed that NATO was reverting to "Cold War schemes" and added that it would respond "in a timely and appropriate manner, using all means and methods at our disposal."</p>

<p>Over the course of two days, some major announcements with regard to providing military aid to Ukraine are expected to be made at the conclusion of the meeting.</p>

<p>Further, they are also expected to step up their financial commitment, making the target of spending 2 per cent of national wealth on defence a minimum figure, rather than a general ambition.</p>

<p>BBC reported that UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak would call on allies directly to meet this target.</p>

<p>However, one other contentious issue is also expected to be discussed. Whether to accept Ukraine’s bid to join the Western alliance.</p>

<p>While NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said that the allies will send Ukraine "a clear and positive message on the path forward towards membership", President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday hit out at the alliance members over the uncertainty.</p>

<p>The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation was formed in 1949 by 12 countries, including the US, UK, Canada and France.</p>

<p>It currently has 31 members across Europe and North America.</p>

<p>They agree to help one another if they are attacked.</p>

<p>The alliance’s primary original aim was to block Soviet expansion in Europe after World War Two.</p>

<p>But following the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991, many Eastern European countries joined the organisation.</p>

<p>For years Russia has opposed Ukraine's request to become a member, fearing it would bring NATO forces too close to its own territory.</p>

<p>But, Finland, which has a 1,340km (832 mile) land border with Russia, became a member in April 2023. Sweden is also expected to join the military alliance.</p>

<h2><strong>What was the issue with Sweden’s bid?</strong></h2>

<p>For decades, Sweden and Finland took a neutral foreign policy posture in the region, but the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war that started on February 24 last year triggered a shift in their approach.</p>

<p>While Finland managed to become a member unopposed, Sweden faced tough resistance from Hungary and Turkey—the other two members of NATO.</p>

<p>Turkey blamed Sweden for hosting its enemies, such as pro-Kurdish groups, and was irked when it allowed the burning of the Quran during protests.</p>

<p>But NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg said that Sweden has now addressed "Turkey's legitimate security concerns", and that the Turkish government has decided to accept the country's application.</p>

<p>Stoltenberg said Hungary's government had promised to do the same.</p>

<p>Together, Sweden and Finland will bolster NATO forces with more than 280,000 regular and reserve troops.</p>

<h2><strong>What is the NATO membership process?</strong></h2>

<p>According to Article 10 of the alliance's charter, NATO follows an "open door" policy for countries seeking membership.</p>

<p>It says that countries that are party to the founding Washington Treaty can invite any European country to join the alliance in order to contribute to the security of the North Atlantic region.</p>

<p>But in order for a country to join NATO, unanimous approval is required, which means the approval of all existing allied countries.</p>

<p>NATO membership normally requires a long process. For membership, a multi-stage process is required to be completed by the aspiring nation.</p>

<p>Accordingly, when a country seeks to join the alliance, NATO sends an official invitation to that country. After that, a seven-step participation process begins.</p>

<h2><strong>Why Ukraine hasn’t been able to join NATO</strong></h2>

<p>In 2008, NATO said that Ukraine could join at a future date, but declined its September 2022 request for "fast-track" membership.</p>

<p>Article 5 of NATO's&nbsp;charter states that if one member is attacked, it is deemed to be an assault on all and hence all others must come to its defence.</p>

<p>If Ukraine joins the alliance during the current conflict with Russia, NATO countries would technically have to declare war on Russia.</p>

<p>Kyiv also believes that it cannot join NATO while the fighting rages. That would risk plunging the alliance into war with Russia.</p>

<p>NATO, as an organisation, does not provide weapons or ammunition to Ukraine.</p>

<p>Though it wants to avoid a direct confrontation with nuclear-armed Russia, the military alliance organisation has been reinforcing the security of member countries near Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.</p>

This is in striking contrast to other world leaders around him, who are happily chatting with each other, even holding hands in some cases. <p>This may or may not be the case, but the image is being viewed as a representation of Ukraine's political situation in Europe. The country is among its allies as they support it. But they keep it at some distance when the question of Ukraine's NATO membership comes up, probably not wanting to rile Russia up. Russia has made it clear again and again in the past that it is against Ukraine getting inducted into an alliance which is&nbsp;largely viewed as an anti-Russia grouping to start with.</p>
