Wall Street bloodbath: Dow plunges over 1,000 points, S&P sinks

Asian trading floors were a sea of red once again on Friday as the global rout returned with a vengeance on intensifying fears about tighter US interest rates.

Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai were among the worst hit as they each plunged more than three percent, while investors piled into safe-haven assets such as gold and the yen.

The sell-off followed another battering for Wall Street, where the Dow suffered its second-heaviest daily points fall on record -- the worst coming on Monday -- after key US Treasury bond yields spiked fuelling the prospect of higher borrowing costs.

After a blistering 2017 and January, markets worldwide have gone into a spasm in the past two weeks on fears that the booming global economy and rising inflation will lead to higher interest rates.

"There’s some big-money players that have really leveraged to the low rates forever, and they have to unwind those trades," Doug Cote, chief market strategist at Voya Investment Management, told Bloomberg News. "They could be in full panic mode right now."

Japan's Nikkei is now at levels not seen since mid-October, Hong Kong is on course to wipe out its 2018 gains and Shanghai is around a seven-month trough.

Elsewhere Sydney fell 1.3 percent, Singapore shed 1.6 percent and Seoul was more than two percent off. Wellington, Manila and Taipei were also being battered.

A key trigger of the recent pullback was last Friday's strong US jobs report that also showed rising US wage growth, fuelling speculation the Federal Reserve will lift rates more than the three times already expected this year.

However, many analysts are upbeat about the future owing to healthy economic conditions in the US and global economies as well as the positive outlook for corporate earnings after Donald Trump's massive tax cuts in December.

Stock markets mostly rose Tuesday following the previous session's record runs triggered by the first-round result of France's presidential election.

Gains were strongest in the US, where the Nasdaq surged above 6,000 for the first time and the blue-chip Dow index jumped more than one per cent following several strong earnings reports from big companies.

The increases were more modest among European equity indices, while the euro reached its highest level so far of 2017 against the dollar.

Global shares had soared Monday after centrist Emmanuel Macron topped the initial vote and looked well on course to beat far-right candidate Marine Le Pen in the May 7 run-off.

"Markets have continued their push higher from yesterday, although at a much more relaxed pace," said Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at IG trading group.

"The immediate impact of Macron's first-round success is wearing off, but the relief is still palpable among investors."

The outlook also improved for the euro currency, which no longer looks vulnerable to a so-called Frexit threatened by Le Pen.

"The risk of both the euro zone and the broader European Union unraveling dissipated in a meaningful way with centrist Emmanuel Macron finishing first in last week's preliminary election and projected to take the next and final round of voting on May 7," said Joe Manimbo, senior market analyst at Western Union Business Solutions.

In the US, gains were propelled in part by strong earnings with three Dow members posting strong advances after reporting solid earnings. Industrial giant Caterpillar surged 7.9 per cent, DuPont 3.6 per cent and McDonald's 5.6 perc ent.

Analysts also have been heartened by talk in recent days from the White House touting news of a long-awaited tax cut plan, with President Donald Trump expected to release details on Wednesday.

French election result revs up global stocks; Nasdaq touches 6,000

Asia shares inched ahead while oil fell for a second session today, as investors awaited guidance on whether the Federal Reserve (Fed) will raise US interest rates this year.

Morgan Stanley Capital International's (MSCI) broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan added 0.3 per cent in slow trade. South Korea, Australia and Shanghai all gained.

Japan's Nikkei went the other way and eased 0.2 per cent as the Yen held firm on the Dollar.

A survey of Japanese manufacturing activity showed signs of steadying in August as output rose for the first time in six months, but had little impact on stocks.

The IHS Markit/Nikkei Japan Flash PMI rose to 49.6 in August from a final 49.3 in July. More flash surveys are due from Europe and the United States later in the day.

The whole world seems to have hushed ahead of comments from Fed Chair Janet Yellen at the central bank's annual meeting in Jackson Hole on Friday. Investors still doubt the stars will align for a hike anytime soon, so a hawkish tone from Yellen would challenge that equanimity.

"Ever so slowly, the market does seem to be reluctantly acknowledging the chorus of senior Fed speakers who have suggested recently that a 2016 rate hike is still quite probable and September is 'live'," wrote analysts at ANZ in a note.

"But in reality, the response has been very muted."

Indeed, US Treasuries actually rallied on Monday, with 10-year yields at 1.54 per cent after falling 4 basis points overnight.

Fed fund futures imply around a 24 per cent chance of an easing in September, rising to around 50 per cent by December.

A quarter-point hike is not fully priced until September 2017.

Oil gives ground

In commodity markets, oil remained under pressure after shedding 3 per cent on Monday.

Prices retreated from two-month highs on worries about burgeoning Chinese fuel exports, more Iraqi and Nigerian crude shipments and a rising US oil rig count.

Brent crude lost 53 Cents to $48.63 a barrel. It hit a two-month high of $51.22 on Friday. US crude futures fell 66 Cents to $46.75, after the September contract expired on Monday at $47.05.

On Wall Street, the Dow jones Industrial Average (Dow) had ended Monday down 0.12 per cent, while the Standard and Poor's (S&P) 500 lost 0.06 per cent and the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (Nasdaq) added 0.12 per cent.

Biotech stocks received a boost from Pfizer's $14 billion acquisition of cancer drug maker Medivation, which jumped nearly 20 per cent.

Of the 479 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings, 71 per cent have topped expectations, according to Thomson Reuters data. Earnings are currently showing a decline of 2.3 per cent for the quarter.

In forex markets, the Dollar slipped a touch to 94.466 against a basket of currencies. The index fell about 1.3 per cent last week on what traders perceived as mixed signals from Fed officials.

The Dollar drifted as low as 100.03 Yen in early trade but found enough support to clamber back to 100.27. The Euro was a shade firmer at $1.1332.

The New Zealand Dollar blipped higher after the country's central bank forecast another 35 basis points in possible rate cuts, less than many investors had wagered on.

The kiwi Dollar rose around a third of a Cent to $0.7310 in reaction.

Asia shares inch ahead, oil falls

Sterling advanced on Thursday as the campaign for Britain's vote on whether to leave the European Union was suspended following the murder of a British lawmaker, while US stocks cut losses.

British Member of Parliament Jo Cox, who was shot dead in the street in her constituency in northern England earlier in the day, had been a vocal supporter of Britain remaining within the European Union.

Whether Britain will leave the European Union, dubbed "Brexit," is an issue that will be decided in a referendum next week and could undermine decades of European integration and stoke global economic uncertainty.

"Certainly, people are talking about the possibility that this does influence the Brexit vote in favour of remain. It is a tragic event all around. There is a sense, there is an immediate emotional reaction, but there is still a week before the referendum itself" on June 23, said Alan Ruskin, global co-head of FX research at Deutsche Bank in New York.

The British Pound hit a US trading high after the news, and was last up slightly at $1.4207.

Rival referendum campaign groups in Britain said they were suspending activities for the day and Prime Minister David Cameron said he would pull out of a planned rally in Gibraltar, the British territory on the southern coast of Spain.

US stocks, which had tumbled earlier on global growth worries, cut losses and the Dow briefly traded higher.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 17.67 points, or 0.1 per cent, at 17,657.84, the S&P 500 lost 2.41 points, or 0.12 per cent, to 2,069.09 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 10.81 points, or 0.22 per cent, to 4,824.12.

The European FTSEurofirst 300 index closed down 0.5 per cent.

Oil prices slumped about three per cent and were down a sixth straight day as the Dollar's rally on fears of Britain's exit from the EU hammered commodities priced in the currency.

Data showing US crude stockpiles fell less than expected also weighed on oil prices. Brent crude futures were down $1.52 at $47.45, while US crude futures were down $1.61 at $46.40.

Yields on most US Treasury yields rose to session highs after British campaigning for the Brexit vote was suspended following MP Cox's death.

Yields on benchmark 10-year Treasury notes rose to a session high of 1.581 per cent, after earlier falling to 1.518 per cent, the lowest level since August 2012.
