Maharashtra’s biggest arms bust: Nearly 5,000 weapons seized in Nanded

At least 31&nbsp;people, including 16 infants have lost their lives&nbsp;in a government-run hospital in western Indian state of Maharashtra. It is being alleged that shortage of medicine was the cause. The deaths occurred at Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital in Nanded.

Dr Shyamrao Wakode, dean in-charge of the Medical College claimed that the deceased were suffering from various ailments including snake bites, arsenic and phosphorus poisoning.

"Around 12 children died in the last 24 hours...12 adults also died due to various ailments (snake bites, arsenic and phosphorus poisoning etc.). Due to transfers of various staff, there was some difficulty for us...We were supposed to buy medicines from the Haffkine Institute but that also didn't happen....Also, patients come from far off to this hospital and there were many patients whose sanctioned budget also got disturbed..." he said.

Former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan, who hails from Nanded, said that besides these deaths, another 70 patients who were referred to the hospital from other private hospitals in Nanded district are 'critical'.

"Around 24 people's death has been reported at the Dr Shankarrao Chavan Medical College and Hospital and therefore I have come here and met the Dean. The situation is concerning and serious. The government should take this up and provide immediate help...Around 70 other people are critical. Replacement of a lot of nurses who were transferred has not been given,” Chavan told ANI news agency.

Later, he wrote on X, "Death toll continues in Nanded. 7 more patients unfortunately died in Government Medical College Hospital since yesterday. 4 children are also included in the dead. The state government should determine the responsibility."&nbsp;

The senior leader from Indian National Congress also said that all required help and resources should be given because the situation is ‘concerning’.&nbsp;

"In the last 24 hours, 24 deaths have been reported at Nanded government Hospital and Medical College (GMCH). Out of these, 12 are infants who were referred here by some local private hospitals. The remaining deaths are of adults for various reasons," Dr Dilip Mhaisekar, Director, Medical Education and Research, Maharashtra, told PTI.

"A three-member expert committee from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) district has been formed with a mandate to submit a report by 1pm on Tuesday. I am personally visiting the hospital to review the situation," he informed.

India: 31 people, including infants, die within a day in Maharashtra hospital

Geeta, the Indore-based hearing and speech impaired woman who returned to India from Pakistan in 2015 after staying there for several years, has come to Nanded in Maharashtra with the hope of finding her parents.

Geeta was 7 or 8 years' old when she was found sitting alone in the Samjhauta Express at Lahore station by Pakistan Rangers around 20 years ago.

She was adopted there by a person from the Edhi Foundation.

She was brought back to India on October 26, 2015, following efforts made by then external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, who called her "Hindustan ki beti" (India's daughter).

Swaraj had also met her and assured that the government was making every effort to trace her parents.

Geeta, believed to be around 30 years old now, is currently living at the 'Anand Service Society', an NGO working for disabled persons, in Madhya Pradesh's Indore city.

Several couples have come forward claiming to be her parents, but she has not recognised any of them and none could substantiate their claims.

Government officials from Indore and the NGO have been trying to trace her home and parents.

Geeta has also not given up hope and visited Nanded on Tuesday along with members of the NGO to search for her home and family.

During an interaction with reporters here with the help of the NGO's sign language expert Gyanendra Purohit, who has accompanied her, Geeta said she has been trying to find her parents.

She conveyed that her home was near a railway station with a hospital, temple and river nearby.

Purohit said they have come to Nanded in this context.

"A train called Sachkhand Express runs from Nanded to Amritsar, and the Samjhauta Express, in which she was found, operates from Amritsar to Pakistan," he said.

"A town called Basar in Telangana, located around 100 km from Nanded resembles the place Geeta describes as her childhood home, so we came here," Purohit said.

Nanded's police inspector Dwarkadas Chikhlikar told PTI that their team was providing all help to Geeta, Purohit and others accompanying her.

"Our team accompanied her during the search and it will work with the NGO members as long as Geeta is here," he said.

Five years after the return from Pakistan, Geeta searches for a family in Maharashtra

A 16-year-old boy died in Nanded on Wednesday during the Dalit protests.&nbsp;

News reports said the boy was part of a mob blocking the road.&nbsp;

The reports said the protesters had run when police chased them.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Police said the boy, identified as Yogesh Jadhav, had run along with the other demonstrators. But that he lost his balance and fell and was crushed by other protesters.&nbsp;
