Four Indian students studying in Russia drowned in the Volkhov River, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Friday (Jun 7), adding that a fifth student was safely rescued and was receiving medical assistance.

"Our Consulate in St. Petersburg remains in contact with the university and local authorities and is providing all possible assistance," the ministry said in a statement today.

The statement further said that so far two dead bodies were recovered from the Volkhov river and that the Indian consulate in St Petersburg was coordinating with local authorities for the repatriation of the mortal remains.

"We offer our condolences to the families. The search for the remaining two missing students continues," the external affairs ministry said. &nbsp;

The five students involved in the incident hailed from Maharashtra's Jalgaon district and were pursuing medical studies at Russia's Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University located in Veliky Novgorod region.

<h2>Indian embassy assures authorities working to send mortal remains</h2>

The Indian embassy in Moscow assured that the authorities were working to send the mortal remains of the deceased back to their relatives as soon as possible.

"We are working to send the bodies to the relatives as soon as possible. Proper treatment is also being provided to the student whose life has been saved," the Indian Embassy in Moscow said in a post on X.

Jalgaon District Collector Ayush Prasad said that the embassy in Russia and the consular general in St. Petersburg were contacted over the matter and they were providing assistance to the grieving families of the students.

"They have been very supportive to the family and we've been coordinating with the judicial as well as the police and disaster management authorities," Prasad told news agency ANI.&nbsp;

"Best medical care is being provided to the student whose life has been safe... We are hoping that the bodies will be sent back to India as per the international protocol..." he further said.

The deputy chief of the Russian army's General Staff was arrested after being accused of taking bribe, investigators said on Thursday (May 23).

Lieutenant-General Vadim Shamarin was accused of taking bribe&nbsp;from a factory that manufactured communications equipment, in exchange for awarding the firm with bigger state contracts, said Russia's Investigative Committee.

It claimed that Shamarin had received at least $360,000 (or 36 million roubles) in return.

The military official has been placed in pre-trial detention for two months and if found guilty, will face a jail term of up to 15 years.

Shamarin's arrest is the fourth detention to take place in a month. Earlier, Deputy Defence Minister Timur Ivanov was on April 23 placed in pre-trial detention for allegedly accepting bribe.

Following the incident, Lieutenant-General Yuri Kuznetsov, head of personnel at the defence ministry, and Major-General Ivan Popov, former commander of Russia's 58th army have also been arrested over alleged corruption charges.

The Kremlin played down Shamarin's arrest and denied that it was carrying out a purge of the military's top brass.&nbsp;

"The fight against corruption is consistent work," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. "It is not a campaign, it is constantly ongoing work."

Several Russian military bloggers welcomed his arrest stating that it was communications breakdowns that led to Russia's military failures in Ukraine.

Later on Thursday, another military official Vladimir Verteletsky was arrested by the committee over ensuring state orders.&nbsp;

It said Verteletsky had "been charged with the abuse of his official powers" and had also been placed in detention.&nbsp;

Verteletsky was accused by the investigators of taking a bribe in connection with a government contract in &nbsp;2022, which was also the year when Moscow began its offensive against Ukraine.

The incident reportedly cost the state "over 70 million rubles".

It further said that the announcement made by Moscow was "evidence of the desperation of the Russian state machine and propaganda, which can think of no other way to attract attention".

Russian armed forces have so far gradually progressed towards the eastern front in over half a dozen villages after seizing the bastion town of Avdiivka in the month of February.

Fighting erupted in Ocheretyne on Saturday, however, Nazar Voloshyn, spokesman for the eastern command, said that the Ukrainian forces had the situation under control and hold&nbsp;two-thirds of the village.

He said that the Ukrainian armed forces were able to bombard the part of the village captured by Russian forces and that "the enemy is blocked and measures are being taken to kick them out."

Towards the north, on the eastern front, the Russian forces were attempting to seize the town of Chasiv Yar, though they had not entered the town, he said.

Amid Russian advances, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday called for additional air defence systems to be sent to Kyiv in its fight against Moscow.&nbsp;

At the start of a virtual meeting led by the United States on helping arm Ukraine, Zelensky said, "This year, Russian jets (have) already used more than 9,000 guided aerial bombs against Ukraine and we need the ability to shoot down the air combat aircraft so that they do not approach our positions and borders."&nbsp;
