The resolution is likely to have appealed to all the countries not to develop and deploy nuclear arms or any weapons of mass destruction in space, which is banned under a 1967 international treaty which includes the US and Russia. The nations would also have been asked to agree to the requirement to verify compliance. Why, if you are following the rules, would you not support a resolution that reaffirms them? What could you possibly be hiding? It’s baffling. And it’s a shame," she said. Meanwhile, echoing Thomas-Greenfield's remarks, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said, “The United States assesses that Russia is developing a new satellite carrying a nuclear device.” Sullivan said that if Putin did not intend to deploy nuclear weapons in space, “Russia would not have vetoed this resolution.” Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia called the resolution “absolutely absurd and politicised,” and stated that it did not go ahead in banning every type of weapon in space. The amendment was opposed by the United States and after the voting, Nebenzia, while addressing the US ambassador, said, “We want a ban on the placement of weapons of any kind in outer space, not just WMDs (weapons of mass destruction). But you don’t want that. And let me ask you that very same question. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has accused Russia of orchestrating a migrant crisis on its border while pleading with the European Union for assistance.

“We visited with madame president the border and we described what kind of situation is – and now we have to find common solutions to stop this phenomenon when Russia used illegal immigrants against us. We are preparing our own legislation but we also need EU-level measures,” he said.

“I’m very thankful that the Commission, the European Union, the other member states, have supported us – and Ursula, you especially supported us, at the beginning of this phenomenon,” he added.

Finland had extended the closure of its borders with Russia on April 4 till “further notice” as the government blames Moscow for “a high risk of organized migration.”

Finland has now shut down eight of its nine checkpoints with Russia. The only one that remains open is dedicated to rail travel only.

Ursula said the issue was not related to just Finland’s security but that of the whole European Union.

“This is not just about the security of Finland, but it is about the security of the European Union. We are in this together,” she said after visiting the border in Lappeenranta.

Orpo alleged that Russia was taking advantage of warmer weather to help people illegally enter Finland via land border.

Russia on Monday (Apr 15) raised concerns over the escalation of tensions in the Middle East after Iran launched an unprecedented attack against Israel on Saturday (Apr 13).

"I think they're perfectly justified to think they should respond because they have been attacked, but we are urging them as friends to think with the head as well as heart, to be smart as well as tough," Cameron said.

He said that he was urging Israel not to escalate the conflict in the Middle East.

"In many ways, this has been a double defeat for Iran. The attack was an almost total failure, and they revealed to the world that they were the malign influence in the region prepared to do this. So our hope is that there won't be a retaliatory response," he added.

Ukraine on Sunday said that a Russian strike on the town of Gulyaipole in the southern Zaporizhzhia region claimed the lives of three people.

"Two men and a woman died under the rubble of their own private house, which was hit by a Russian shell," the head of the region, Ivan Fedorov, said on social media.

The officials, according to the news agency AFP, said that another civilian, who was a woman, was killed in the city of Kupiansk, in the northeastern Kharkiv region.

"A woman died under the rubble in an apartment on the fourth floor of a high-rise building," Ukraine's state emergency services said, adding that it was a residential building.

Authorities in Kharkiv said that Russia launched another attack on Sunday (Apr 6) which injured at least five civilians.

Meanwhile, Moscow said that Ukraine struck the dome above a shutdown reactor at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear station on Sunday, said the plant's Russian-installed administration.

The plant had earlier also reported attacks by Ukrainian drones.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that it had been informed by the Russian-run plant that a drone had exploded at the site and the information was "consistent" with IAEA observations.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said both sides should refrain from actions which "jeopardise nuclear safety".

"The situation remains critical. The water is arriving and in the coming days, its level will only rise," Salmin wrote on Telegram, adding that the water level had risen 28 centimetres since the previous day.

The Russian weather authorities believe that on Wednesday it will reach its peak level.

In connection to the latest attack which was thwarted by the Russian authorities, the Federal Security Service (FSB) disclosed that they foiled "terrorist activities of three nationals from a Central Asian country," as per reports.&nbsp;

The security agency also revealed that the now-detained individuals were&nbsp;"planning to commit a terrorist act by blowing up a device in a public place in the Stavropol region."&nbsp;

Notably, the Stavropol region is located in the southern part of Russia and is situated in the North Caucasus region and borders multiple other regions, including Dagestan and Chechnya. As per reports, images broadcast&nbsp;on Russian television depicted several men restrained on the ground by FSB officials.

The reports also added that materials for making an improvised explosive device (IED) were also discovered at the residence of one of the suspects.&nbsp;

Russia on Thursday (March 28) blocked the annual renewal of a panel of experts scrutinising the imposition of UN sanctions against North Korea over its ballistic projectile agendas and nuclear weapons.

The move comes weeks after the United Nations stated that it was probing US accusations and reports of the transfer of arms between Pyongyang and Moscow that apparently had been used by the latter in its war against Ukraine.

However, both Russia and North Korea have denied the accusations but did vow to have deepened their military relations last year.

"This is almost comparable to destroying a CCTV to avoid being caught red-handed," said South Korea's UN Ambassador Joonkook Hwang of Russia's veto.

China on Thursday abstained from the vote, while the other 13 council members voted in its favour.

"Moscow has undermined the prospect of the peaceful, diplomatic resolution of one of the world's most dangerous nuclear proliferation issues," deputy US Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood told the council.

Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia questioned the work done by the experts before the vote and told the Security Council, "Its work is increasingly being reduced to playing into the hands of Western approaches, reprinting biased information and analyzing newspaper headlines and poor quality photos."

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba took to social media and slammed the veto calling it "a guilty plea".

The United States called the veto by Russia a "self-interested effort to bury the panel's reporting on its own collusion" with North Korea.

"Russia's actions today have cynically undermined international peace and security, all to advance the corrupt bargain that Moscow has struck with the DPRK," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said, referring to the North by its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), North Korea has been under the sanction of the United Nations over its ballistic missile and nuclear programmes since the year 2016.

Over the years, these measures have been intensified.

For the past 15 years, the UN sanctions have been monitored by the panel of independent experts reporting to the &nbsp;Security Council twice a year, further recommending efforts for improved implementation of the measures.

The directive for the current panel of experts will expire on April 30, 2024.&nbsp;

The most recent report by them, which was made public earlier this month, stated that it was probing dozens of suspected cyberattacks by North Korea that raked in $3 billion to help it further develop its nuclear weapons programme.&nbsp;

"The panel, through its work to expose sanctions non-compliance, was an inconvenience for Russia," said Britain's UN Ambassador Barbara Woodward. "But let me be clear to Russia - the sanctions regime remains in place and the UK remains committed to holding DPRK to account for its compliance."
