<p>The study noted that a small but small proportion of infected people (2 to 3 per cent) became very unwell and developed serious neurological problems. The issues included seizure and encephalitis.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apart from the severe and rare brain problem, experts have also found some evidence of a group of people with monkeypox who had more common neurological symptoms including headache, muscle ache, and fatigue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In-depth analysis and further investigation are needed to understand the issue. So far, the research is unclear on how severe these symptoms were and how long they lasted. Also, a further probe&nbsp;is needed to know how many people with monkeypox had psychiatric problems, such as anxiety and depression.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There's a lack of certainty but the experts did find some cases where people with monkeypox infection can have neuropsychiatric symptoms. Notably, future research exploring this will need to follow up with people with no neuropsychiatric conditions before becoming infected with the disease.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Another study published in the&nbsp;<em>New England Journal of Medicine,</em>&nbsp;stated that over 500 people with monkeypox from 16 countries in the current outbreak.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Recently, two cases of monkeypox were reported and they confirmed encephalitis in Spain. However, the report clearly mentions that further study is needed to determine to what extent monkeypox is causing more serious problems like encephalitis and seizure.&nbsp;</p>

Monkeypox cases across globe witnessed 21% dip last week, says WHO

<p>India's national capital reported the fourth case of monkeypox on Wednesday after a Nigerian woman tested positive.</p>

<p>There are 3,417 confirmed monkeypox cases reported across 58 countries and the outbreak is rapidly expanding across multiple continents, it said in a statement.</p>

<p>The announcement comes ahead of the World Health Organisation (WHO) meeting which is currently taking place (June 23) to decide on monkeypox outbreak designation.</p>

<p>“There is no justification to wait for the monkeypox pandemic to grow further. The best time to act is now. By taking immediate action, we can control the outbreak with the least effort, and prevent consequences from becoming worse,” said Yaneer Bar-Yam, PhD, President of New England Complex System Institute and co-founder of WHN.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The actions needed now only require clear public communication about symptoms, widely available testing, and contact tracing with very few quarantines. Any delay only makes the effort harder and the consequences more severe.”</p>

<p>Although initial symptoms of monkeypox include a high fever, swollen lymph nodes and a blistery chickenpox-like rash, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said that current cases do not always present flu-like symptoms.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the CDC emphasised that the infection is primarily spread through intimate interpersonal contact. Many of the reported monkeypox cases in the current outbreak, which is mostly centred in Europe, are between sexual partners who have had such close contact.</p>

<p>In recent days, scientists in Italy and Germany discovered viral DNA in the sperm of a small number of monkeypox patients, including a lab-tested sample that revealed the virus found in the sperm of a single patient was capable of infecting and multiplying in another person.</p>

<p>Most of the monkeypox cases have been reported in European countries. The WHO listed the non-endemic countries reporting the most cases as Britain (207), Spain (156), Portugal (138), Canada (58) and Germany (57).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apart from the mentioned countries, cases have also been reported in Argentina, Australia, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates.&nbsp;</p>

<p>WHO said: "It is highly likely that other countries will identify cases and there will be further spread of the virus."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The WHO said, "Some countries are reporting that new generations of cases are no longer appearing only among known contacts of previously confirmed cases, suggesting that chains of transmission are being missed through undetected circulation of the virus."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Although the current risk to human health and for the general public remains low, the public health risk could become high if this virus exploits the opportunity to establish itself in non-endemic countries as a widespread human pathogen," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"WHO assesses the risk at the global level as moderate considering this is the first time that many monkeypox cases and clusters are reported concurrently in non-endemic and endemic countries." it further added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We don't know if we are just seeing the peak of the iceberg,” Briand said during a press briefing.</p>

<p>The UN agency has said that it is considering whether the outbreak should be assessed as a "potential public health emergency of international concern" or PHEIC.</p>

<p>"We really don't actually yet know whether there's asymptomatic transmission of monkeypox - the indications in the past have been that this is not a major feature - but this remains to be determined, she added.</p>

<p>Monkeypox is related to smallpox, which killed millions around the world every year before it was eradicated in 1980. But monkeypox is much less severe, and most people recover within three to four weeks.<br />
