Messi remains sidelined after suffering a right ankle injury a month ago in Argentina's 1-0 victory over Colombia in the Copa America final.

Messi has not yet trained with his Miami teammates since escaping a walking boot.

The Leagues Cup is a tournament with MLS and Liga MX Mexican clubs, with Messi helping lift Miami to last year's inaugural title.

Two-goal substitute Matias Rojas sparked the second half rout from Eastern Conference leaders Inter after New York had led 1-0 at the break.

Without Messi, Miami had fallen to a 4-0 defeat to the Red Bulls in New York in March, but they more than avenged that loss with a merciless second-half demolition job.

Messi's five assists, which all came in the second half, are a new record for an MLS game and he now has 10 goals and 12 assists in eight league appearances so far this season.

Lionel Messi has shrugged off retirement talks, saying he remains self-critical of his performances. The World Cup winner with Argentina said the day he feels he cannot contribute to his team’s success, he will step aside.

Messi, who plays for Inter Miami in the Major League Soccer (MLS) in the US, will turn 37 later this year. He said age will not be a factor when he considers retirement some day.

"I haven't yet thought of what I'm going to do when I retire," Messi confessed during an interview with Big Time.

"Today I try to enjoy the day-to-day, the moments, without thinking about life after [football].”&nbsp;

"I know that the moment I feel that I am no longer able to perform, that I no longer enjoy [playing] or [can] help my teammates, I will quit. I'm very self-critical of myself; I know when I'm good, when I'm bad when I'm playing well and when I'm playing badly.

"When I feel it's time to take that step, I'll take it without thinking about age. If I feel good, I'll always try to keep competing because it's what I like and I know how to do," the Argentine great said.

"I'm not sure about anything yet, I hope to keep playing for a while longer, which is what I like to do. When the time comes, I will surely find a way to fulfil myself and do what I like, and [find] a new role,” Messi said.

"On a sporting level, I was lucky enough to be able to achieve all my dreams and the truth is that I can't ask for more. Thank God he gave me [everything] both professionally and on a human level, as well as my family, my friends.

Suarez makes up a quartet of former Barca players at Miami with Spaniards Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets having moved to the club last year.

The striker, who has also played with Ajax, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid in a prolific career, scored 26 goals in all competitions for Gremio last season and said he was targeting success with his new club.

"Football is always about challenges...and Inter Miami showed me a nice opportunity to dream of winning MLS, which this club never did," he told a press conference after training.

Suarez, who said he had been pitched the move by Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham, said he was "dreaming big" for the new MLS season which begins on February 21.

The forward was recalled to the Uruguay team for November's CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers, coming on as a substitute for first choice striker Darwin Nunez in the 3-0 win over Bolivia and said he hopes his form will earn him a place for the Copa America, which is being held in the United States.

"Coming to the United States knowing that (the tournament) is being played here this year is another plus. (But) it will depend on my performance on the field,” he said.

Miami have their first test on January 19 against the El Salvador national team in San Salvador.

After a friendly against FC Dallas in Texas, the team flies to Saudi Arabia to play Al Hilal on January 29 before taking on Cristiano Ronaldo's side Al Nassr.

Three days later, Miami then face an All-Star team in Hong Kong on February 4 before jetting to Tokyo for a friendly with J-League club Vissel Kobe.

The Columbus Crew won their third Major League Soccer title after beating Los Angeles FC 2-1 in the MLS Cup final on Saturday.

A penalty from Cucho Hernandez and goal from Yaw Yeboah gave the Crew a 2-0 lead at the interval before Denis Bouanga pulled a goal back for LAFC in the 74th minute.

In what may have been the final game before retirement for former Italy captain Giorgio Chiellini and possibly a last appearance for LAFC for Mexican star Carlos Vela, last year's champions were convincingly beaten.

Columbus, coached by little-known Frenchman Wilfried Nancy, dominated the game for long stretches while Steve Cherundolo's LAFC were unable to unleash their trademark counter-attacks.

Nancy, who won his first major title as a coach in his first season with Columbus, said his team had improved throughout the season.

"They have grown a lot as players, and as people. When we started, I told them 'Guys, impossible is an opinion'-- just enjoy it and we're gonna grow. And this is what happened. This is unbelievable," he said.

"We played our way. I'm so proud".

After a frantic start, in front of a loud, capacity 20,802 home crowd, Columbus quickly settled into their possession game thanks to the calming influence of veteran midfielder Darlington Nagbe, who has now won the title with three different clubs.

French defender Steven Moreira had the first real opening, in the 16th minute, but his disappointing header from a promising position in the box was off target.

The Crew's roaming Colombian striker Hernandez sent a reminder of his goal threat with a shot from 20 yards out which flashed wide of the post.

Uruguayan attacking midfielder Diego Rossi was increasingly influential as he began to find spaces behind Hernandez and he went close in the 27th minute with a shot into the side-netting.

Referee Armando Villarreal had no hesitation pointing to the spot and Hernandez buried the penalty into the bottom corner to make it 1-0 in the 33rd minute.

Within four minutes the Crew doubled their lead with a goal of perfect simplicity.

Danish defender Malte Amundsen played a pinpoint defence-splitting pass to Yeboah who sped around the back of Ryan Hollingshead before poking home with the outside of his left-foot.

The Crew fans, many of whom had been chanting in the stadium over two hours before kick off, were ecstatic and LAFC, who had created next to nothing for the league's top scorer Bouanga, looked shell-shocked.

There was some encouragement though for the constantly singing black-clad visiting Los Angeles supporters on the stroke of half-time when a low cross from Cristian Olivera was almost sliced into his own goal by Crew defender Rudy Carmacho.

Columbus continued to dominate after the break though with the livewire Yeboah, skipping past two defenders as he weaved into the box, chipping over the advancing Los Angeles keeper Max Crepeau only for Palacios to head off the line.

Western Conference top seeds St. Louis City suffered a shock 4-1 defeat at home to Midwest rivals Sporting Kansas City in the opening game of their best-of-three series in the MLS playoffs on Sunday. Expansion club St. Louis defied all expectations in their debut season but came crashing down to earth in game one of their first-round series.

Logan Ndenbe fired Kansas City ahead with a thundering left-foot drive in the 27th minute but the lead lasted just a minute as St. Louis defender Tim Parker levelled from close range after a corner. But Sporting, a wildcard qualifier, continued to attack with purpose and restored their advantage through French midfielder Remi Walker, who drilled home a low shot from the edge of the box.

Three minutes later it was 3-1 for the visitors with Ethiopian-born Israeli international Gadi Kinda scoring a wonderful solo strike, bursting towards the box before unleashing an unstoppable blast from 25 yards. Any hope St. Louis had of turning the game around ended in the 61st minute when Hungarian Daniel Salloi stole in at the back post to turn in the fourth.

The teams meet again in game two on November 5 in Kansas City. Argentine Alvaro Barreal scored twice as FC Cincinnati, the overall top seed, made a convincing start to their post-season push with a 3-0 win over New York Red Bulls in game one on Sunday.

The 23-year-old Barreal, one of a number of talented South Americans now plying their trade in MLS, opened the scoring for Cincinnati in the 23rd minute, running onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Junior Moreno and finding the bottom corner.

Another Argentine, Luciano Acosta, doubled the lead for Cincinnati in the 35th minute when a poor back-header from Red Bulls defender Andres Reyes forced goalkeeper Carlos Coronel to rush out of the box to clear. But the ball fell to playmaker Acosta, who, spotting the 'keeper off his line, beat him with a lofted chip from over 30 yards out. New York pushed hard in search of a way back into the game but the match was put beyond them by Arreal in the 89th minute.

Acosta fed his compatriot with a chip into the box and Arreal's deft first touch set up his own volley, which flew past Coronel. The pair will face off again in New York on Saturday.

Amine Bassi struck a 79th-minute winner as the Houston Dynamo beat Real Salt Lake 2-1 in their first match. French-born midfielder Bassi pounced on a loose ball in the box and slotted home after Griffin Dorsey's low effort had been pushed out by Zac MacMath.

Houston, the fourth seed in the Western Conference, dominated fifth-seeded RSL from the outset, pinning their opponent back in the opening stages. "I still don't feel like this trophy is mine," Acosta said. "I feel like we've done a great job with the whole team but I did dream of winning this MVP at some point. "You dream of winning individual awards but they're not the priority. The priority is always to win with the group and we did that."

Acosta became only the sixth player in MLS history with three or more seasons producing at least 10 goals and 10 assists. Cincinnati will have a prime chance to play for the MLS Cup. The club will host arch-rival Columbus Crew in the Eastern Conference playoff final on Saturday.

One of the Ohio clubs will play either Houston or defending champion Los Angeles FC in the MLS Cup final on December 9. Acosta paid tribute to countryman Lionel Messi, who led Argentina to the World Cup crown last year. Messi played only a few MLS contests for Inter Miami this season but expects to have a full campaign in 2024.

Football: New York Red Bulls beat Charlotte FC to advance to East playoffs in MLS

There will be no Hollywood ending to Lionel Messi's first season in Major League Soccer after his Inter Miami team were eliminated from contention for the playoffs after a 1-0 defeat at home to FC Cincinnati on Saturday.

DC United also missed out on a spot in the post-season and immediately announced that their English manager, former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney, was leaving his post by "mutual agreement".

Messi returned from injury as a substitute in the 55th minute but Cincinnati, who have earned top seed in the playoffs, grabbed the win with a goal from Argentine Alvaro Barreal.

Messi made little impact on the field and although he had two free-kick opportunities within his shooting range, both his efforts sailed harmlessly wide.

"I could see that he was lacking football (game time)," said Miami head coach Gerardo Martino. "The injury is fine, he doesn't have any problems, but (his performance was) logical because in recent times he has played very little and it could happen that he is lacking in rhythm, which is also why he only played 32 or 33 minutes," he added.

With other results going against Miami, Messi's side were left next to bottom of the Eastern Conference, seven points off the last playoff spot with just two games remaining.

Messi had played just 37 minutes for his club since September 3, having returned with an injury from international duty with Argentina last month.

Without him Miami struggled, paying the price for their successful run to the Leagues Cup title in August when Messi lit up the tournament and collected his first trophy since joining the club in July.

"Honestly, I expected the season to be exactly the opposite of what happened," said Martino, who took over just before Messi's arrival. "My expectations were to put the group together, shape it football-wise, not transcend too much in the Leagues Cup, compete well in the Cup (US Open Cup) and qualify for the playoffs, but it was exactly the opposite as it usually happens when a coach thinks something," he said.

"Out of three possible tournaments we have won one, it is a very important fact for us because the league has 28 other teams. Houston and we won, whoever wins the league will be the third winner and there will be 25 others who will not have won. From that point of view, we're happy," he said.

Miami's final two games are both against Charlotte with the last on the road on October 21. It remains to be see if Messi, who has been called up for Argentina's upcoming World Cup qualifiers, will feature.

"It’s more of the same. We have to evaluate him day by day. He trained yesterday, he will train today, and afterwards we will surely make a decision. But every day he is doing better," he told reporters.

If Miami are to achieve what is now an unlikely goal of extending their season into the playoffs, they will surely need Messi to be on the field.

But with the international break coming up coach Pat Noonan will have to decide whether or not to recall his starters for the game in Fort Lauderdale.

"You have to... take what’s in the best interest of the individual player and their health so that we can go through the stretch with as many healthy bodies as possible," he said after the Red Bulls game.

Saturday is the penultimate round of action for most teams in MLS with a few playoff spots still up for grabs and the chance for a top four finish and home field advantage in the first round of the post-season another key factor.

Two spots remain open in the East with three still to be claimed in the West.

In this season's format, the eighth placed team in each conference will host a single game wildcard match against the ninth finisher.

The winners will then go into round one which features best of three series. The top four teams have home field advantage for the first and -- if needed -- third games.

Then the conference semi-finals, finals and MLS Cup itself are all single games.

The defeat leaves Miami next to bottom of the Eastern Conference and five points off the last playoff spot with just three games remaining and their destiny no longer in their own hands.

The prospect of seeing the Argentine World Cup winner in action drew a record home crowd of 62,124 to Soldier Field in Chicago but with no Messi, it was Chicago's own diminutive number ten who put on the show.

"It's beautiful to see Soldier Field packed full for soccer game and I hope they're going to come more and more because we showed today how good we are and the team spirit is here," said Shaqiri.

"We needed that win obviously and every game now is a final. We suffered of course, we saw the quality of Inter Miami but we knew also they had some problems in counter-attack. It was a perfect night for us," added the 31-year-old.

Charlotte kept their post-season hopes alive with a 3-0 win over the East's bottom club Toronto with two first-half penalties from Polish forward Karol Swiderski.

Although the North Carolina side are in 13th place, they are just two points behind Montreal, who occupy ninth place, the last playoff spot in the East.

Major League Soccer: Inter Miami's playoff hopes fade after Chicago rout sans Messi

Inter Miami shrugged off an injury concern over Lionel Messi to beat Toronto FC 4-0 on Wednesday with Robert Taylor scoring twice as they boosted their playoff hopes.

Messi returned to the starting line-up after skipping Saturday's 5-2 defeat at Atlanta due to muscle fatigue but he had to leave the field in the 38th minute, looking uncomfortable.

His former Barcelona team-mate, Spaniard Jordi Alba who had also sat out the trip to Atlanta, had limped off three minutes earlier in the game.

"They had to come out, we will evaluate them in the coming days," Miami coach Gerardo Martino told broadcasters Apple TV at the interval.

Despite the blow of losing their star and one of their most influential players, Miami swept aside the Eastern Conference's bottom club with some ease.

Facundo Farias opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time with a blistering volley after Toronto keeper Tomas Romero had meekly palmed out a Noah Allen cross.

Substitute Robert Taylor then made it 2-0 in the 54th minute with an outstanding individual strike, dribbling across the box from the left before unleashing a sharply angled drive back into the bottom corner.

Taylor then turned provider, releasing another substitute Benjamin Cremaschi who fired through the legs of Romero to make it 3-0.

Finnish international Taylor completed his impactful performance with the fourth, bringing down a floated pass over the top from Farias and blasting home from close range.

The performance of Taylor, Cremaschi and other substitutes will give Miami confidence that they can maintain a push towards the post-season, even if Messi and Alba may need more time to get back to fitness.

"It shows guys are willing to step up, shows the depth we have on our team, and the collective mentality we approach each game with," said goalkeeper Drake Callender.

The Columbus Crew beat the Chicago Fire 3-0 with Colombian Cucho Hernandez scoring all three inside 23 minutes -- the second fastest hattrick from the start in MLS history.

Tenth placed New York City kept their playoff hopes alive with a 2-0 win at home to second placed Orlando City.

Eastern Conference leaders Cincinnati needed a goal deep in stoppage time from Argentina Luciano Acosta to earn a point at eighth placed Montreal.

MLS: Despite Lionel Messi early exit, Inter Miami put four past Toronto

Former US national team coach Bruce Arena has resigned from Major League Soccer club New England Revolution after a league investigation into allegations of "insensitive and inappropriate remarks," MLS said in a statement on Saturday.

Arena, the country's most successful coach, had been placed on administrative leave on July 30, while the league conducted a review into the allegations. No specific details of the charges have been made public.

"As a result of the investigation which confirmed certain of these allegations, should Arena wish to pursue future employment within MLS, he must first submit a petition to the Commissioner," the league said in a statement.

New England said in a statement that they had "accepted the resignation of&nbsp;Bruce Arena. We wish Bruce well and thank him for his contributions to the team."

The 71-year-old Arena, who had two spells in charge of the USA national team, said his departure was the right move to make.

"I know that I have made some mistakes and moving forward, I plan to spend some time reflecting on this situation and taking corrective steps to address what has transpired,” Arena said in a statement.&nbsp;

"And while this has not been an easy decision, I am confident that it is in the best interest of both the New England Revolution organization and my family that we part ways at this time," he added.

Arena joined New England in 2019 and led them to the Supporters Shield, presented to the team with the best regular season record, two years later.

The New Yorker led DC United to the first ever MLS Cup title in 1996 and repeated the feat the following season. In 1998, his side became the first team from the USA to win the regional CONCACAF Champions Cup.

He took over as the USA coach in October 1998 and four years later he took the team to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Japan and South Korea -- their best achievement in the post-war era.

Arena enjoyed more club success with the Los Angeles Galaxy who he guided to three MLS Cup titles before a brief return to the USA team, resigning after their failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Inter Miami delivered the most impressive win of their Lionel Messi era, 3-1 over Major League Soccer champions Los Angeles FC on Sunday, with two assists from the Argentine boosting their playoff hopes.

Goals from Argentine forward Facundo Farias, Spanish full-back Jordi Alba and substitute Leonardo Campana of Ecuador earned Miami a statement victory that moves them within nine points of the playoff places with nine games remaining.

Bouanga had another great chance in the 11th minute after a fine through ball from former Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini but Miami keeper Drake Callender pulled off an excellent save.

After surviving those early scares, Miami took the lead in the 14th minute when Tomas Aviles split the LAFC defence to find Farias who beat John McCarthy with a low shot on the slide.

Miami struggled to contain Bouanga but the LA forward was again unable to make the most of his opportunity when he burst through the middle but fired wide.

Mario Gonzalez should have done better when he was given space for a shot but blasted into the side-netting as Miami were increasingly threatening on the counter.

Paraguay midfielder Diego Gomez broke forward and played a clever back-heel to Messi but the Argentine's shot was weak and easily dealt with by McCarthy.

Before the interval, Messi had his best chance of the game, again set up by the outstanding Gomez, but one-on-one with McCarthy, Messi saw his lofted shot pushed away by the LAFC keeper.

<h2>- 'Nice test' -</h2>

LAFC paid the price for the wastefulness in front of goal in the 51st minute when Miami's former Barcelona trio combined in style.

Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets fed Messi who picked out the overlapping Alba and he burst into the box to score with a cool, left-footed finish.

Miami were in firm control and wrapped up the win in the 83rd minute when Messi burst from midfield and slipped the ball outside to Campana who made no mistake with a curling finish.

"You know what Leo is, what he can give on the pitch. He gets the best (out) of everyone," said a beaming Campana. "Right now, the goal is to achieve the playoffs and I hope we can do it to give happiness to the people of Miami," added the striker.

LA got a 90th-minute consolation via Ryan Hollingshead’s glancing header from a corner and while the third-placed team in the Western Conference should have little trouble making the playoffs, they had been given a lesson in finishing.

Miami were bottom of the East and winless in 11 games in MLS before Messi's arrival and after winning the Leagues Cup, the Florida club have won two and drawn one in regular season action.

"It was a nice test for us to see where we stood, what we were able to do on a difficult ground against a very good opponent, the winners last year and we earned a very important victory for what is coming," Messi told broadcasters Apple TV. &nbsp;"This group grows more every day, we have been saying it since the beginning of all this. We were lucky to get a tournament and get into a final and now the goal is to get into the playoffs and fight for the league," he added.

"I feel good physically. Thank God I can continue playing and help the team in whatever way I can and hopefully we continue in this dynamic," he added.

In Sunday's other game, last year's runners-up, the Philadelphia Union, beat the New York Red Bulls 4-1 to keep their playoff hopes on track.

Striking workers at a Los Angeles hotel have appealed to Inter Miami and their captain Lionel Messi to stay away from their establishment when the team arrive for a match against LAFC on Sunday.

Employees at the Fairmont Miramar in Santa Monica began picketing on Wednesday, joining thousands of hotel workers across the region who have gone out on strike this summer seeking better wages amid soaring housing costs.

"We have learned that Inter Miami and the great Lionel Messi are coming to Los Angeles this week for a match against LAFC on Sunday," Unite Here Local 11 said in a statement. "As housekeepers, cooks, bellmen and servers, we ask Lionel Messi and his team mates to stand in solidarity with us and stay out of the Fairmont Miramar."

Lionel Messi said on Thursday he has re-found happiness since joining Inter Miami, describing his move to Major League Soccer as the "opposite" of his transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain.

Messi, who has scored nine goals in six appearances since joining Miami, joined the MLS club after two seasons in France with PSG.

Speaking to local media for the first time since arriving in Miami, a relaxed Messi talked positively of his life in South Florida and contrasted it with his time in the French capital, which drew to a close earlier this year with sections of PSG's fans booing him.

"As I said at the time, my departure to Paris was not something I wanted, it was not something I wanted to leave Barcelona and, so to speak, it was from one day to the next," he said.

"And, well, I also had to get used to a place that was totally different from where I had been living all my life, both in terms of the city and in a sporting sense, and, well, it was difficult, but the opposite of what is happening to me now here," he said.

There had been speculation that Messi might return to Barcelona or join the wave of players heading to the Saudi league but Messi said he was pleased with his decision.

"I can tell you that I am very happy with the decision we made, not only for the game, for how it is going, but for my family, for how we live day by day, for how we enjoy the city, for this new experience and the reception of the people that was extraordinary from the first day, not only in Miami," he said.

"I made two away trips with the team and the treatment of the people towards me was spectacular. So, I am grateful and happy for the moment I am living and above all to be able to continue enjoying what I liked all my life, to play and to be able to do it in this way with joy," he said, stressing his decision had made together with his family.

The seven-times Ballon d'Or winner has the chance to win his first trophy when Miami take on Nashville on Saturday in the final of the Leagues Cup.

It would also be his club's first triumph in just their third season of existence.

"It would be amazing, wouldn't it? Both for me and for all the people who are fans of the club, for the club itself," he said. "We want to be a point of reference and winning a title would help a lot in that. It is a very young club, it has been around for a very short time, and to win our first title would be great for all of us," he said.

Despite huge expectations and the hope that the Argentine World Cup winner will lead the sport to new heights in the United States, Messi said he was simply enjoying the game and his life.

"The truth is that I don't think about all those things, I simply came here to play, to continue enjoying football, which is what I have liked all my life and I chose this place for that reason, above all things," he said.

Messi said his family had settled in well, despite them not yet having found a permanent home in the area and he said that he enjoyed to be part of the Spanish-speaking community in South Florida.

"From the beginning, since my arrival, the welcome was impressive, it is a city with many Latinos, and that makes everything much easier too," he said.

"The Latinos are much closer, much more demonstrative, always showing affection, closeness, and I think that is the most important, the healthiest and the most beautiful thing in order to be able to settle in and enjoy what you do," he said.

"I already knew the city pretty well, how the people were. I already loved it....but to be living here every day and passing all of my time here has let me get a lot closer to the city and the people here.

"I'm happy, I'm enjoying this new chapter of my life, the experience of living in the United States, which was something I always had in mind to do."

After Sunday's helter-skelter game in Dallas ended 4-4, with Miami progressing after penalties, Martino was pleased to see his team keep control of the contest.

"We kept control of the ball for longer spells and I think there was only one clear chance from the opponent. Other than that, I think we didn't suffer defensively," said the former Barcelona and Argentina coach.

"It's very difficult for us not to score goals that's why we talk a lot about keeping a clean sheet because that's almost a guarantee of being able to win the game," he said.

He's taken it to an entirely different level. He's accelerated the growth of our league and this sport in North America like nothing we have ever seen before,” he said.

Dan revealed how the social media numbers got influenced as well.&nbsp;

“Earlier, Inter Miami had a decent Instagram following (around 1 million) before Messi joined the club, and they are now at 13 million followers. We have seen the response on social media in his first couple of games. He's a global icon, and he's resonating,” MLS’ Executive VP added.

He added when Messi travels across USA (Since he played three home games so far), there are going to be packed stadiums everywhere.

Messi scored twice from close range to maintain his 100 percent winning record with Miami, who were winless in 11 league games before his arrival.

Messi will now head on the road with Miami for the first time with Sunday's match with FC Dallas in Texas offering a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament for top flight teams from Major League Soccer and Mexico's Liga MX.

Wednesday's Florida derby was not a game which will be featured in the Messi highlight videos but despite being frustrated by tight-marking for most of the game, the seven-time Ballon D'Or winner emerged the decisive figure once again.

A thunderstorm led to a 95-minute delay to the kick-off but when the game began, Miami picked up where they left off in their 4-0 win over Atlanta United last week - attacking with intent.

Robert Taylor, the Finnish winger, cut in from the left and chipped a perfect ball into the path of the on-running Messi who brought the ball down with his chest and volleyed home from six yards out.

But Orlando responded strongly and they drew level ten minutes later when a low shot from Ivan Angulo was pushed out by Miami keeper Drake Callender and Uruguayan Cesar Araujo pounced on the edge of the box to drive a low shot into the corner.

<h2>Frustration for Orlando</h2>

Orlando were increasingly effective in closing down Messi and the Argentine showed the first signs of frustration when he picked up a yellow card for a foul on Wilder Cartagena.

Orlando coach Oscar Pareja had clearly given his team instructions to sacrifice possession to Miami to ensure they had enough players to crowd out and neutralise Messi and Busquets, and the approach was working.

Openings were limited for Messi and when he did get some space near the goal in the 32nd minute, after good work from DeAndre Yedlin, he squeezed his left-foot shot wide.

The Argentine had an opportunity with a free-kick from within his range, just before the break but his effort from over 25 yards out was comfortably tipped over by keeper Pedro Gallese.

Messi looked unhappy as he left the field at the break, perhaps by the physical nature of some of the marking he had received as much as the lack of space he had found in the game.

But Miami found a way to restore their lead without the involvement of their star man -- 18-year-old Benjamin Cremaschi slipped a pass into the box to Martinez who feeling a slight tug from Antonio Carlos went down and won a penalty.

Orlando were unhappy with the decision but their protests were to no avail and Martinez, after a stutter and a shuffle, fired home.

Miami made sure of the win and progression to the last 16 when Taylor broke down the left and picked out Martinez at the back of the box who chested the ball and found Messi with a clever chip which the Argentine gleefully tucked away.

Another former Barcelona star Jordi Alba made his debut for Miami, coming on as a 64th minute substitute and although Araujo had an effort disallowed in stoppage time, there was little trouble in the latter stages for Messi's team.

Miami's right-back DeAndre Yedlin suggested that Orlando's approach had come from fear while Miami continued to play with belief.

"He just gives everyone around him confidence. You can give him balls in difficult situations and know he's going to make something out of it.&nbsp;

"The flipside is that for the teams we're playing against, it puts a bit of fear in their eyes. They're dropping back on their heels a bit and that gives us more space to play," he said.

Lionel Messi made a Hollywood start to his American adventure, scoring a last-second winner with a curling free-kick in his debut game for Inter Miami on Friday. Deep in the fourth minute of stoppage time, with the Leagues Cup match against Mexican club Cruz Azul standing at 1-1, Messi won a free-kick just outside the box, in perfect range for his famous left foot.

The script had been written and Messi delivered his line perfectly.

The seven-times Ballon d'Or winner took a glance at the position of Cruz Azul goalkeeper Andres Gudino, then put his head down before curling his shot high to the keeper's right and into the top corner to deliver the 2-1 triumph. The capacity 20,000 crowd at Miami's DRV PNK Stadium went wild, with some fans running on to the field before being apprehended by security. Smoke bombs in Miami's trademark pink went off in the area behind the goal, occupied by the team's most passionate supporters.

If Messi's debut was any guide, the former Barcelona star still has plenty to offer.

Even before his wonderful goal he had looked sharp and alert, his touch belying the fact that until little over a week ago he was vacationing on a Caribbean beach with his family.

Sergio Busquets, the Spanish midfielder and former Barca team-mate, who has joined Messi for his American adventure, also made a strong impression after they both entered the contest in the 54th minute as part of a triple change with Venezuelan Josef Martinez.

Busquets showed his famous, almost telepathic understanding with Messi remains, after over two years apart from each other, with the midfielder delivering pieces from all angles into the Argentine's feet.

But it was Messi's magical finish that will remain long in the memories of Inter Miami fans.

He also made sure that the club's co-owner David Beckham had a broad grin at the final whistle.

"To be honest, as soon as I saw the free kick given I thought this is the way it’s meant to end. Especially when you’ve got players like Leo and Sergio on the pitch, that’s what they produce," said the former England midfielder.

"It's so exciting tonight for our fans. All of these people that come down here to see Leo just step onto the pitch, let alone just do what he’s done. It’s a dream come true for everyone in this stadium to see.

"It's such a moment for this country, such a moment for this league," he said.

Messi only started training in earnest this week after spending time with his family on vacation and the opening game of the new Leagues Cup -- which pits MLS and Liga MX teams together in a tournament format -- may come too soon for the World Cup champion to start.

Co-owner David Beckham said on Tuesday that Messi will play "some part of the game" and coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino, Messi's compatriot and former Barcelona coach, had suggested he might start on the bench.

At the pre-match press conference, moved to the downtown performing arts centre in Fort Lauderdale due to the huge media interest, Martino said they would make a decision on how to use Messi after training on Friday.

"It is very difficult for people not to have expectations,” said Martino, "But it may take a while."

The fact that fans have paid around $250 for tickets for what has long been billed as Messi's debut, means that he almost certainly will enter the field at some stage however.

Cruz Azul's experienced coach, the Brazilian born Ricardo Ferretti, laughed when asked whether his team expected to face Messi.

"If he didn't play... it would be better. But, they also have to think about something, why are there so many people here? Because of him, right?" said the 69-year-old.

But Ferretti, known as "Tuca" throughout his career as a coach in Mexico, was a little irked that the game between the two teams was being viewed purely as the debut of one player.

"We will not face a single player. He does not win or lose alone. Soccer is a team sport. There are players who stand out and deserve emphasis, I agree with that," he added.

"There are two institutions here - Cruz Azul is a historic team, one of the greats of Mexican football and Inter Miami is an important team in MLS," he added.

The Inter Miami players who haven't been making the headlines in recent days, have had a strange week with over 200 media turning out to film their training session on Tuesday.

But DeAndre Yedlin, the USA international who played in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, said Messi has quickly fit into the dressing room.

"He's a great team-mate. For the (presentation) event he had on Sunday, (striker Leonardo) Campana was looking for tickets and so he put it in the group chat, I didn't even know that Messi was in the group chat yet but he popped up straight away and said 'how many do you need Leo?'

"Straight of the bat like that, they've known each other for like two or three days but just to show that generosity is a great first example of how he is," he said.

Martino said that Messi looks happy in training and has noticed that he seems more relaxed having finally won a World Cup with his country.

"Leo is without a huge backpack that he had, and he took it off seven months ago. I think we are in a great moment," the coach said.

Busquets, who has been joined by another former Barca team-mate in defender Jordi Alba, who signed for the club on Thursday, said it was great to be reunited with Messi.

"I'm very happy to enjoy Leo as a teammate again, we parted ways, but time gives us the opportunity to get back together, he is a great person.

"We are looking forward to playing with the best player in the history of football, I am very happy for everything, hopefully we can take what we did now to Inter Miami."

Portugal skipper and Al Nassr star Cristiano Ronaldo has said that Saudi league is better than USA's Major League Soccer (MLS). Ronaldo made the statement while talking to reporters after playing in the first half of Saudi club's 5-0 loss in a pre-season game against Celta Vigo.

The match between Al Nassr and La Liga club was played in Ronaldo's home country of Portugal. The football star also said that he has no plans to return to a European club or play in MLS. Ronaldo's contemporary Lionel Messi, notably, has recently joined MLS club Inter Miami in a two-year deal.&nbsp;

Ronaldo also said that European clubs have lost a lot of quality and only decent league is the Premier League.

"I'm 100 per cent sure I won't return to any European club," Ronaldo said. "I'm 38 years old. And European football has lost a lot of quality. The only valid one and still doing good is the Premier League. They're way ahead of all the other leagues."

Ronaldo, who was substituted at end of first half during the game against Celta Vigo, plans to play for 60-70 minutes in Al Nassar's next friendly against Benfica. The match will also be played in Portugal.

"The plan was for me to play 45 minutes today," Ronaldo said. "Against Benfica, I might play 60 or 70 minutes. It is better to fine-tune the machine little by little to reach the best form."

Ronaldo, who was substituted at end of first half during the game against Celta Vigo, plans to play for 60-70 minutes in Al Nassar's next friendly against Benfica.
