Trump has condemned the killing of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American who died after a white policeman pinned his neck under a knee for nearly nine minutes in Minneapolis on May 25, and has promised justice. But he said rightful protests could not be drowned out by an "angry mob".

"Mayors and governors must establish an overwhelming law enforcement presence until the violence has been quelled," Trump said. "If a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then I will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them."

Following his address, Trump walked through an area that had been cleared by police to nearby St. John's Episcopal Church, where he posed for pictures with his daughter, Ivanka, and U.S. Attorney General William Barr.

The presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church diocese in Washington D. C., Michael Curry, was among those who criticized Trump's use of the historic church for a photo opportunity.

"In so doing, he used a church building and the Holy Bible for partisan political purposes," he said on Twitter. The church suffered minor fire damage during protests on Monday night.

The White House said it was clearing the area before a curfew.

A few hours later, thousands of people marched through Brooklyn, shouting "Justice now!" while cars drove alongside, some drivers honking in support.

Television images showed crowds smashing windows and looting luxury stores along Fifth Avenue in Manhattan before the city's 11 p.m. curfew. Mayor Bill de Blasio said the curfew would be moved to 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

After several minutes, Floyd gradually grows unresponsive and ceases to move. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital a short time later.

“We have evidence, we have the citizen’s camera’s video, the horrible, horrific, terrible thing we have all seen over and over again,” Freeman said. “We have the officer’s body-worn camera, we have statements from some witnesses.”

Chauvin had his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, according to an autopsy report. Medical examiners found the combined impact of being restrained by police, underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death.

Floyd, a Houston native who had worked security for a nightclub, was arrested for allegedly using counterfeit money at a store to buy cigarettes on Monday evening. An employee who called police described the suspect as possibly drunk, according to an official transcript of the call.

Freeman said the investigation into Chauvin, who faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted, was ongoing and he anticipated also charging the three other officers, identified by the city as Thomas Lane, Tou Thao and J Alexander Kueng.

The prosecutor said it was appropriate to charge “the most dangerous perpetrator” first.

But Freeman stressed that charges in similar cases typically take nine months to a year, adding, “This is by far the fastest we’ve ever charged a police officer.”

At a news briefing early Friday, Mayor Jacob Frey defended his decision to evacuate the precinct station due to "imminent threats to both officers and the public."

Asked by reporters if he had a response to Trump's tweet, Frey said: "Weakness is refusing to take responsibility for your own actions. Weakness is pointing your own finger at a time of crisis. Donald Trump knows nothing about the strength of Minneapolis. We are strong as hell."

The Minnesota National Guard said it activated 500 of its soldiers in the greater Minneapolis area, mostly to provide security support to firefighters.

The mayor said many of the troops had been posted around the city to help police prevent looting of banks, grocery stores, pharmacies and other essential locations during the coronavirus pandemic.

Several other buildings and a car were set ablaze and looters plundered several businesses, including a burning liquor store and nearby discount store that had been ransacked the night before. Fire officials said 16 buildings were torched on Wednesday night.

The workers, many of whom are practising Muslims, say the required productivity rate is too high, that the company is unconcerned about too many worker injuries and that the conditions don't allow practising Muslims to pray as they otherwise would.

"We do not have enough time to pray. There is a lot of pressure. They say your rate is too low," Ahmad said.

The workers timed their protest during the busy holiday shopping season, hoping to force the online retailer to make changes. They already have had some success, most significantly in holding two meetings with management.

The New York Times reported that it was the first known instance of any group succeeding in forcing Amazon to negotiate.

"We are appreciative they've sat down and talked with us, but we are not seeing real action," activist Abdi Muse said.

Muse is the executive director of the Awood Center, a union-backed non-profit that organized the protest and helps East African workers in the state.

Amazon countered that it is a source of good pay and health benefits for warehouse employees, and has been engaged in "direct dialogue." "I encourage anyone to compare our pay, benefits and workplace to other retailers and major employers in the Shakopee community and across the country," spokeswoman Shevaun Brown said in a statement.

The retail giant has faced past complaints from warehouse employees about working conditions.

It has more than 75 "fulfilment centres" across the country where purchased merchandise is packaged and shipped. The centres employ more than 125,000 full-time employees, according to Amazon.

Protests against Trump's immigration ban broke out in the cities of Austin, Minneapolis and New York on Saturday. US authorities arrested hundreds of undocumented migrants this week in the first large-scale raids under President Donald Trump, triggering panic in immigrant communities nationwide, AFP reported. More than a hundred people gathered in Austin, Texas -- home to 100,000 unauthorized migrants -- late Friday to demonstrate against the crackdown by immigration enforcement officers in the last few weeks. The average number of people detained per day has increased dramatically, going from four or five to 44 over the past two days, according to the Mexican Consulate, Reuters reported. Demonstrators told Reuters that one operation, known as "Cross Check" which focuses on undocumented immigrants with criminal records, has resulted in a dragnet. "We, as a community here have the right to gather and unite and fight for our rights," said one of the demonstrators protesting the operations collectively called Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE). ICE released the results of the operation, saying about 150 of the 160 foreign nationals arrested during the week had criminal histories, CNN reported. CNN quoted a Homeland Security official as saying that 37 of those detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in California this week as part of the enforcement crackdown have now been deported to Mexico. US President Donald Trump recently broadened the categories of people who could be targeted for immigration enforcement to anyone who had been charged with a crime, removing an Obama-era exception for people convicted of traffic misdemeanors. In New York, which hosts the country's largest population of undocumented immigrants -- 1.15 million, according to Pew -- a few hundred people demonstrated near the immigration services office. Thousands protest in Minneapolis in solidarity with immigrants Over a thousand people protested across Minneapolis on Saturday in a show of solidarity with immigrants and Muslims against what organisers of the event called "state-sponsored hatred". Organisers carried a banner with the words "Love Embraces All" as they led the March, called "Walk of Love", through downtown Minneapolis just days before Valentine's Day. Others waved US flags, heart-shaped balloons and held up signs criticising US President Donald Trump's travel ban and views on immigration, Reuters reported. The march, which began in downtown Minneapolis, closed down roads throughout the city and ended near a pedestrian bridge by the University of Minnesota.
