Criticising a leading US official for the second time in less than a week, North Korea described US National Security Adviser John Bolton's call for Pyongyang to show that it’s serious about giving up its nuclear weapons as

North Korea's remark comes amid row over its call to replace Secretary of State Mike Pompeo with someone more mature in talks.&nbsp;

North Korea said on Thursday it no longer wanted to deal with Pompeo and that he should be replaced in talks by someone more mature, hours after it announced its first weapons test since nuclear talks broke down.

US President Donald Trump has said he is open to a third summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, but Bolton told Bloomberg News on Wednesday there first needed to be "a real indication from North Korea that they've made the strategic decision to give up nuclear weapons".

"Bolton in an interview with Bloomberg, showed above himself by saying such a nonsense," North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui told reporters when asked about his recent comments, the Korean Central News Agency said on Saturday.

"Bolton's remarks make me wonder whether they sprang out of incomprehension of the intentions of the top leaders of the DPRK and the US or whether he was just trying to talk with a certain sense of humour for his part, with its own deviation," she said, referring to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, North Korea's official name.

"All things considered, his word has no charm in it and he looks dim-sighted to me," Choe Son Hui was quoted as saying.&nbsp;

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo landed in the city of Cucuta, Colombia on Sunday where he met with Colombian President Ivan Duque as part of a tour to shore up regional support for President Donald Trump's hard line stance against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Mike Pompeo visits Venezuelan border with Colombian President Duque

The United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he believes the fall of Nicolás Maduro's regime in Venezuela was closer by the day and reiterated his opposition to Russian and Cuban support for the leftist president during an interview with Spanish news agency Efe near the Venezuelan border.&nbsp;

The US' top diplomat spoke with Efe near the Tiendita international border bridge on the outskirts of the northeastern Colombian city of Cúcuta, which has witnessed a mass influx of migrants escaping the ongoing humanitarian and socio-economic crisis in oil-rich Venezuela.&nbsp;

Both the Tiendita bridge and the nearby Simón Bolivar bridge, were the scene of recent tensions and sporadic clashes after Maduro blocked off access to US-provided humanitarian aid stockpiled on the Colombian side of the border.

Capping off a tour of four South American countries – Chile, Paraguay, Peru, and Colombia – Pompeo braved the torrential rain that welcomed him off the plane from Lima, to visit a centre for Venezuelan migrants and meet with Colombian President Ivan Duque.

Question: Mr Secretary, after your visit to the border, do you think that the fall of Maduro is getting closer? And what do you think about what you saw on the Simón Bolivar bridge?

Pompeo: It was really quite something today to see, we visited one of the migration centres, we got to talk to some of the children, some of the families that fled horrible conditions that had been imposed on them by Maduro and his military thugs.

It was really quite something to get a chance to talk to them and hear what their lives were before and then how bad they've gotten under Maduro. To your first question, yes, I think every minute, every hour is one step closer to Maduro leaving, all the Venezuelan people want is democracy restored, a chance to live, to work, to be with their families and Maduro is denying them that. The Russians are no help, the Cubans are worse; I hope there'll be a change soon.

Question: Does the US have a plan to counter the growing presence of both Russia and Cuba in Venezuela?

Pompeo: The Russians are responsible for allowing Maduro to stay in power. The Cubans even more so, they've been there longer, they're more deeply committed. How the Cuban government can watch the faces of these people, to watch their starvation when there's food in the building in which we're sitting, see the kids not get medicine, vaccines, when there's medicine sitting right here in this building. How the Cubans and Russians permit that to happen is beyond me just as a human being, and the United States is committed to restoring democracy in Venezuela.

Question: Is the White House intensifying the blockade on Cuba as the government in Havana claims?

Pompeo: We need the Cubans to stop supporting that murderous tyrant Nicolaás Maduro; that's our goal, that's our objective. We are going to use the tools that we have available to create a setup so that the Cubans will see – the Cuban people will see that it's not in their best interest to control Venezuela and to keep Nicolás Maduro in power, that's our simple goal, that's our mission.

Question: Will the US support negotiations with new Chavista factions to remove Maduro from power?

Pompeo: Look, we've said all along, those who behave well, those who land on the right side of history, on the right side of freedom, they can be part of the government moving forward. Those who don't, those who commit acts of aggression, those who commit violence, those who act in ways that are inconsistent with it, those who support Maduro to the end, will face a very different fate.

Question: Will the US sanction the Spanish oil company Repsol for doing business in Venezuela?

Pompeo: We never get in front of announcing sanctions before we do them. We've made very clear what is lawful and what is unlawful, and each day that goes by we are further tightening that set of restrictions, not only the political restrictions but economic restrictions as well.

Question: Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin revealed today that the US is working with other countries to create a fund with $10 billion to help the next Venezuelan government. What impact could this fund have on the fall of Maduro?

Pompeo: Well, we are fully prepared for the day after, not only to provide the economic support that secretary Mnuchin spoke of, but to help provide the infrastructure, the political infrastructure, we want free and fair elections. Juan Guaidó is the interim president. We want to lead the path forward for democracy so that Venezuelan people can have the basic freedom that they so richly deserve. That's the mission for the day after Maduro leaves.

Question: How is the relationship between the US and Colombia? President Trump has criticized President Ivan Duque twice this month about the drug war.

Pompeo: I think you saw it today, the relationship with President Duque is excellent: we have economic relationships, we have political relationships, we are working incredibly closely to restore democracy in Venezuela, we have been working for years to reduce coca production here in Colombia, president Duque is working on that as well. We want it to go faster, I think President Duque wants it to go faster as well and we are committed to doing what we can to support that.

Question: How do you think that the withdrawal aid to the countries in the Northern Triangle of Central America (Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador) will contribute to reducing the flow of migrants to the US?

Pompeo: Here's what we know: hundreds of millions of dollars have been provided to the Northern Triangle countries and we have an enormous migration problem, people fleeing El Salvador, people fleeing Guatemala. What we're trying to do is get those governments to take this seriously, to assist the people of their country so that they won't have to do this long, dangerous track along Mexico.&nbsp;

President Trump is committed to securing our southern border and that effort in the Northern Triangle is to get them to do what those countries need to do; to have not only the will, but to demonstrate that will in closing down the capacity of their people to flee their countries.

Question: The US government has said that this crisis at the southern border is caused by criminal gangs and drug dealers. Do you think that it's useful to separate those migrant kids from their parents in order to fight that crisis?

Pompeo: We're going to stop their flow across our southern border, period, full stop. President Trump has made that every country has the right to determine who comes into their country. We have to stop the flow of drugs, we have to stop the flow of migrants, to watch these people who are traversing Mexico. They're being preyed upon by drug cartels inside of Mexico. This is morally wrong and President Trump is determined to stop that.

US is committed to restoring democracy in Venezuela: Mike Pompeo

Pompeo held talks with President Martin Vizcarra and Foreign Minister Nestor Popolizio before attending a dinner for business leaders.

He paid tribute to Peru's welcome for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan refugees and Vizcarra's fight against corruption, which has embroiled the previous four Peruvian presidents.

But he became irritated when a reporter asked if that contradicted the US President Donald Trump's harsh immigration policy at home.

"Our objective is to allow people to stay in their home countries, this is President Trump's desire, we want to create conditions in these countries where they can stay in their own country," he told the press conference with Popolizio.

Pompeo also spoke by telephone with Brazil's Foreign Minister Ernesto Araujo, the State Department announced late Saturday.

"They reaffirmed the close friendship between the United States and Brazil and pledged to continue working together to address the... crises in Venezuela, their effects on Venezuela's neighbours, and the need for outside actors, including Cuba, Russia, and China, to stop propping up Nicolas Maduro," spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement.

Visit Paraguay

Earlier Pompeo had become the first US secretary of state to visit Paraguay, formerly ruled as a dictatorship, since 1965, paying tribute to the country's transition to democracy as an inspiration to the region.

The top US diplomat arrived in Asuncion late Friday after talks with Chile's President Sebastian Pinera in Santiago that focused heavily on his country's developing trade relationship with China.

The highlight of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/china-protecting-violent-islamic-terror-groups-from-un-sanctions-mike-pompeo-206163">Pompeo</a>'s trip will be a brief visit Sunday to the Colombian city of Cucuta on the Venezuelan border, where he will meet refugees.&nbsp;

All four countries on his itinerary are led by right-wing or centre-right leaders favourable to Washington's uncompromising approach to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

In Asuncion, Pompeo had praised Paraguay's support for US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido in Venezuela, and its role in the Lima Group of mostly Latin American nations seeking a solution to the Venezuela crisis.&nbsp;

"Paraguay is a leader in defending democracy and calling Maduro as he is, a tyrant who has ruined his country," Pompeo said.

Foreign Minister Luis Castiglioni said Paraguay's position on Venezuela remained strongly aligned with that of the United States.

"We have always said: with dictators, with tyrants, there is no dialogue. You fight them. We must fight them until liberties are restored so that the Venezuelan people can return to live with dignity," he told reporters.

Asked by a US journalist if Paraguay would back military intervention in Venezuela, he said: "We are convinced that all the diplomatic efforts that are being made to isolate this regime will have results in a short time."

Transnational crime&nbsp;

The two officials also discussed Paraguay's commitments on combatting threats of terrorism, drug trafficking and transnational crime in what is known as the tri-border area, the border region Paraguay shares with Argentina and Brazil.

"Paraguay has declared all-out war against transnational crime," said Castiglioni.

"This battle that we are fighting is a battle of no return until we win. We have assured the Secretary of State that Paraguay wants to cooperate very closely with the US government since we are on the same path."

The US official said before his arrival in Chile on Friday that the current US administration had "spent a lot of time" in Latin America seeking to improve trade in a region which has turned its back in recent years on a slew of leftist governments.

"This is a historic opportunity," he told reporters, referring to "a handful of countries that are truly market driven, democratic in ways that we haven’t had in South America for decades. And we think it creates real opportunity."

Asked about China's influence at a press conference following a working lunch with his Chilean counterpart Roberto Ampuero, Pompeo said: "I think the Chilean government and the United States government both share the same concerns."

"China's trade activities often are deeply connected to their national security mission, their technological goals, their desire to steal intellectual property, to have forced technology transfer, to engage in activity that is not economic," he said.&nbsp;

He iterated his concerns Saturday in Peru.

"Too often we see China's predatory lending and debt diplomacy reverse positive advances in this area," he said.&nbsp;

"Our shared goal would be to resist Chinese overtures and promote transparency."

Pompeo in Peru to maintain regional pressure on Venezuela's Maduro

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/pompeo-in-peru-to-maintain-regional-pressure-on-venezuelas-maduro-210223">US Secretary of State on a visit to Lima on Saturday</a> praised Peru for taking in 700,000 Venezuelans fleeing the political and humanitarian crisis in their country.&nbsp;

Mike Pompeo spoke to reporters alongside Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru Nestor Popolizio after meeting President Martin Vizcarra in Lima.

"They, the people of Peru, generously host almost three-quarters of a million refugees from Venezuela," Pompeo said at the presidential palace.&nbsp;

"They fled their home country to escape the breakdown of health services, the limited water supply, the bare bread shelves, rolling blackouts and hyperinflation - part of the reason the United States has provided more than $30 million in humanitarian aid to Peru, complimenting your government’s efforts to provide protection for these Venezuelans," he added.&nbsp;

Pompeo said that Peru has "felt firsthand the effects of the disastrous Nicolas Maduro" administration, which Popolizio described as "illegitimate."

The US Secretary of State also thanked Peru for supporting Juan Guaido as the leader of the interim government in Venezuela and said that the responsibility of the country's refugees "lies squarely with Nicolas Maduro, not any policies that any democratic nation has taken with our deep intent to make lives better for the Venezuelan people."&nbsp;

"We in each case have exactly the same objective (as Peru). Our objective is to allow people to stay in their home countries... We want to create conditions in these countries where they can stay in their own country and they don’t have the need to migrate somewhere else from Venezuela," Pompeo said.

Popolizio said that Peru was working with the other countries of the Lima Group to step up international pressure to isolate Maduro's government and to support the people of Venezuela through humanitarian aid.

"In Venezuela, there is a systematic violation of human rights. We have to continue isolating Maduro's illegitimate and dictatorial regime," he added.

The Peruvian minister said that Peru, with the Lima Group, the Organization of American States and the Security Council, is carrying out a number of activities to complement the measures that the United States and other countries of the European Union have already taken in economic terms to isolate Maduro's government.

"In Venezuela, human rights are constantly being violated, as well as the freedoms. So we’re going to continue working under the scope of the Lima Group as well as with other countries to continue to isolate the illegitimate government of dictator Nicolas Maduro," Popolizio said.

Pompeo and the Peruvian president also discussed bilateral trade, which Pompeo said has "virtually doubled" since the signing of the trade agreement between the two countries in 2009, as well as the fight against corruption and drug-trafficking in the South American country.

Pompeo, whose tour includes Chile and Paraguay, will travel to the Venezuelan border in Colombia on Sunday to assess the situation of thousands of migrants fleeing Venezuela.&nbsp;

Pompeo, whose tour includes Chile and Paraguay, will travel to the Venezuelan border in Colombia on Sunday to assess the situation of thousands of migrants fleeing Venezuela.

Pompeo praises 'generous' Peru for taking in 700,000 Venezuelans

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday defended sanctions on Venezuela and said the United States would not "quit the fight" in the socialist-run Latin American nation which is spiralling into deepening the economic and political crisis.

Pompeo is on a three-day trip to Chile, Paraguay and Peru, a clutch of fast-growing countries in a region where Washington's concerns are focused on China's growing presence as well as the Venezuelan crisis.

Washington is pressuring President Nicolas Maduro to step down and urging more countries to join the coalition supporting opposition leader Juan Guaido.

South America has seen a political shift in recent years towards the right, and most nations have backed Guaido.

Asked about China in Santiago, Pompeo warned about "predatory" lending practices and "malign or nefarious" actions, mirroring criticism previous US officials have made about China during Latin America trips.

China, whose booming economy over the past two decades has driven up demand for raw materials, is already the top trade partner for nations from tiny Uruguay to Brazil, Latin America's largest economy and the world's top soybean exporter. The pivot by Latin American countries towards China for financing has alarmed Washington.

Pompeo will travel later on Friday to Paraguay, the first visit by a U.S. secretary of state to the country since 1965, a gesture experts say underscores U.S. commitment to the region. On Sunday he is set to visit Cucuta, a Colombian border city receiving significant numbers of Venezuelan migrants fleeing hunger and violence in their homeland.

The arrest of a Chinese woman who allegedly brought malicious software to President Donald Trump's Florida resort shows that Beijing poses a threat, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Friday.

Zhang Yujing was arrested last week at Mar-a-Lago, where Trump was on one of his frequent visits, after attempting to enter while carrying multiple mobile phones and a thumb drive containing malware, according to court documents.

"I think this tells the American people the threat that China poses, the efforts that they're making here inside the United States not only against government officials, but more broadly," Pompeo said in an interview with CBS News.

"The theft of American intellectual property is a big business to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars, and President Trump is determined to push back against it," he said.

He was referring to ongoing trade talks in which the United States is pressing China to take action to protect intellectual property.

Pompeo said the administration was looking closely at the arrest but declined further comment, saying the investigation was ongoing.

There has been no evidence presented publicly that Zhang was sent by the Chinese government, although Beijing says it is providing consular assistance.

Zhang was accused of making false statements to federal officers after first claiming to be a member who wanted to use the pool, and then saying she was attending a non-existent Chinese-American friendship event.

The security of Mar-a-Lago itself has drawn scrutiny in light of the unusual situation of a president who frequently hobnobs with members who pay to be part of his club.

Arrest at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort shows China threat: Mike Pompeo

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday blamed Iran for the level of devastation from major floods, and said Washington was ready to help.

Pompeo issued a statement in implicit response to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who on Twitter blamed "economic terrorism" by the United States whose sanctions have led to a chronic shortage of rescue helicopters.

"These floods once again show the level of Iranian regime mismanagement in urban planning and in emergency preparedness. The regime blames outside entities when, in fact, it is their mismanagement that has led to this disaster," Pompeo said in a statement.

"The United States stands ready to assist and contribute to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, which would then direct the money through the Iranian Red Crescent for relief," he said.

Vast stretches of Iran have been inundated since mid-March, killing some 50 people and disrupting major transportation and communications. The Iranian Red Crescent said Tuesday it was preparing to accommodate 100,000 people as rain hits southwestern Khuzestan province.

The disaster struck just as Iran was reeling from the reimposition of sweeping US sanctions with President Donald Trump hoping to curb the clerical regime's influence around the Middle East.

In contrast with earlier disasters such as the 2003 Bam earthquake, foreign assistance has been minimal amid fear of US penalties for dealings with Iran.

Pompeo in his statement also highlighted Iran's targeting of environmentalists "for attempting to help Iran prepare for these very issues."

Eight environmentalists appeared in court earlier this year on charges they were spying on military bases.

Pakistan's Foreign Minister calls Mike Pompeo

The White House on Sunday defended President Donald Trump's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-cuts-aid-for-some-central-american-countries-over-migrants-206859">decision to cut off aid to three small Central American countries</a>, insisting they weren't doing enough to stop the flow of migrants to the United States.

Trump announced the aid cut-off to El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala last week and threatened once again to close the US border with Mexico in response to the migrant surge.

"If we're going to give these countries hundreds of millions of dollars, we would like them to do more," White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said on CNN's "State of the Union."

The aid has gone to fund programs to combat gangs and foster development in the three countries, with the aim of addressing the root causes of the mass migration.

"If it's working so well, why are the people still coming? &nbsp;Why are these historic numbers -- again, 100,000 people will cross the border this month alone," Mulvaney said.

"It's not working well enough to help us solve our border crisis. &nbsp;And that's what the president's focused on," he said.

Critics warned, however, that US funding cuts are likely to worsen conditions, possibly adding to the migrant flow. And they said Trump's threat to close the border with Mexico if carried out, would hurt the US economy.

Senator Dick Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois, dismissed the threat to close the border as "a totally unrealistic boast" by Trump.

"We need to focus on what's happening in Central America where three countries are disassembling before our eyes and people are desperately coming to the United States. The president cutting off aid to these countries will not solve this problem," he said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

White House counsellor Kellyanne Conway, speaking on "Fox News Sunday," insisted Trump's threat to close the border "certainly isn't a bluff."

On Saturday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that, at the president's direction, the State Department was ending its foreign assistance programs for the three Central American countries for 2017 and 2018.

The State Department did not say how much unspent money was involved in the step, which could be largely symbolic.

In comments to reporters Friday, Trump suggested as much as $500 million is at stake.

"We were giving them $500 million. We were paying them tremendous amounts of money, and we're not paying them anymore because they haven't done a thing."

In response to the aid cuts, Honduras proposed Sunday that it, Guatemala and El Salvador consider undertaking joint initiatives "to ensure the sovereignty and dignity of each nation" in light of "the contradictory policies of the United States."

"The world cannot afford China's shameful hypocrisy toward Muslims. On one hand, China abuses more than a million Muslims at home, but on the other it protects violent Islamic terrorist groups from sanctions at the UN," Pompeo said in a tweet Wednesday, without mentioning the JeM or the outfit's chief.

The US along with Britain and France had moved a resolution in the UNSC to designate Azhar a "global terrorist" following the February 14 Pulwama attack, but China blocked it.

China put a hold on the resolution arguing that it needs more time to study it. Every member of the UNSC, except China, had supported the US move.

News brief: Big stories of the day

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo voiced disappointment Wednesday after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/italy-becomes-the-first-g7-nation-to-join-chinas-belt-and-road-initiative-205117">Italy joined China's "Silk Road" network</a> of transport and trade links, saying it was not in the ally's long-term interest.

Rome's populist government signed a "non-binding" protocol with visiting President Xi Jinping on Saturday that made Italy the first nation in the Group of Seven major economies to become part of the signature Chinese project.

"It's disappointing anytime any country begins to engage in behaviour and commercial interactions with China that aren't straight up," Pompeo told the House Foreign Affairs Committee in response after a lawmaker asked about the Italian decision.

"We're saddened because we think <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/chinas-belt-and-road-led-to-corruption-in-malaysia-report-189666">the people of those countries ultimately lose</a>," Pompeo said.

Under the Silk Road initiative, named for the ancient trading route across Eurasia, China is funding major rail, road and sea infrastructure as it seeks a big boost in international trade.

Pompeo, however, said that China practised "debt-trap diplomacy" with its state-owned or state-controlled enterprises looking after only their own interests.

"It may feel good in the moment — you think you got a cheap product or a low-cost bridge or road built. And in the end there will be a political cost attached to that which will greatly exceed the economic value of what you were provided," he said.

The United States has stepped up its warnings around the world about China's growing economic clout.

It has notably urged nations not to choose Chinese telecom giant Huawei to upgrade to fifth-generation communications, voicing privacy and security fears.

Critics say that the United States is mostly trying to shore up its own businesses which are facing tough competition, with Huawei selling phones that are substantially cheaper than Apple's.

Pakistan itself, the secretary (of State Mike Pompeo) has emphasised the need (for Pakistan) to deliver outcomes and to build confidence and trust between our two nations and we do want to see a prosperous Pakistan that contributes positively towards regional stability and security, &nbsp;State Department Deputy Spokesperson Robert Palladino told reporters Tuesday at his biweekly news conference.

Palladino was answering a question on the recent remarks by Pompeo in which he identified Pakistan's nuclear proliferation as the third top national security concerns for the US.&nbsp;

Nuclear proliferation is one of the very first national security concerns articulated in our national security strategy. It's at the very top of the list, he said.&nbsp;

So that absolutely remains something that this administration thinks about often because the level of impact of what could happen is simply so great. So that remains at the very top of our national security considerations, Palladino said.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on Russia to "cease its unconstructive behaviour" by supporting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro during a phone call with his Russian counterpart, the State Department said on Monday.

Spokesman Robert Palladino said Pompeo had spoken to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about Venezuela on Monday.

"The secretary told Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov that the United States and regional countries will not stand idly by as Russia exacerbates tensions in Venezuela," Palladino said in a statement.

The call appears to have been prompted by reports of the arrival on Sunday in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, of two Russian air force planes carrying a Russian defence official and nearly 100 troops, amid strengthening ties between Caracas and Moscow.

The State Department statement did not refer to the arrival of the Russian passenger jet and a military cargo plane, although it condemned Russian military support for the "illegitimate regime of Nicolas Maduro."&nbsp;

Russia has warned the United States and neighbours against military intervention in Venezuela.

During the call with Lavrov, Pompeo urged Moscow to join the United States and regional countries in backing opposition leader Juan Guaido.

The Trump administration has imposed crippling sanctions on the OPEC nation's oil industry. On Friday it sanctioned its development bank, Bandes, in efforts to choke off financial flows to Maduro's government and called on Venezuelan military leaders to abandon him.

Maduro has denounced the sanctions as US intervention and has won diplomatic backing from Russia, China and Cuba.

The State Department statement did not refer to the arrival of the Russian passenger jet and a military cargo plane, although it condemned Russian military support for the "illegitimate regime of Nicolas Maduro." Russia has warned the United States and neighbours against military intervention in Venezuela.

Pompeo urges Moscow in phone call to cease 'unconstructive behaviour' in Venezuela

US-backed Syrian forces were sweeping on Thursday through the final enclave that had been held by Islamic State fighters and said they would declare the group defeated once a search for hidden mines and jihadist holdouts was complete.

"Our forces are still conducting combing and search operations and as soon as they are finished we will announce the liberation," Mustafa Bali, spokesman for the Syrian Democratic Forces, said in a note to journalists.

Bali told Reuters the operation included sweeping for mines and combing for fighters still hidden in trenches and tunnels beneath Baghouz, the last patch of Islamic State territory.

The last clashes reported by the SDF were on Tuesday, indicating that major fighting is over in the last big battle of a five-year international campaign against a self-proclaimed caliphate that once comprised a third of both Iraq and Syria.

The SDF, backed by US air power, swept on Tuesday into a camp where hundreds of fighters had been making their last stand with thousands of civilians, many their own wives and children.

The situation in Baghouz appeared calm for a second consecutive day, a Reuters journalist in Baghouz said. Warplanes with the US-led coalition, including drones, could be seen overhead.

A news outlet with close ties to the Syrian Kurdish-led authorities, Hawar, reported that the operation was now finished and Islamic State defeated. But an SDF denial swiftly made clear it was not quite prepared to declare victory yet.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) said another 2,000 women and children had arrived late on Wednesday at the al-Hol camp in northeastern Syria that has received tens of thousands of people who have poured out of the shrinking Islamic State territory.

"These women and children are in the worst condition we have seen since the crisis first began. Many have been caught up in the fighting and dozens have been burnt or badly injured by shrapnel," Wendy Taeuber, IRC’s Iraq and northeast Syria country director, said in a statement.

"We are expecting another 3,000 to arrive soon and we are very worried that they may be in even worse shape."

The camp is now holding more than 72,000 people, including more than 40,000 children, IRC said. The total number of deaths on the way to al-Hol or shortly after arriving there now stood at 138, the overwhelming number of them babies and infants.

Though the defeat of Islamic State at Baghouz ends its grip overpopulated territory, it remains a threat, with fighters operating in remote territory elsewhere and capable of mounting insurgent attacks.

The US military has warned that Islamic State may still count tens of thousands of fighters, dispersed throughout Iraq and Syria, with enough leaders and resources to present a menacing insurgency.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, on a visit to Jerusalem, told reporters victory was "close".

He was proud of "the work that the United States did, the Department of Defense did, that the folks fighting down in the Euphrates river valley did," he said. "The threat from radical Islamic terrorism remains. We need to finish out the last few square metres there, in Syria. Still work to do."

The Pentagon's internal watchdog released a report last month saying Islamic State remained an active insurgent group and was regenerating functions and capabilities more quickly in Iraq than in Syria.

It warned the group could resurge in Syria within six to 12 months and regain limited territory without sustained pressure.

The United States believes Iraq is the location of its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who stood at the pulpit of the great medieval mosque in Mosul in 2014 to declare himself caliph, sovereign over all Muslims.

Victory over Islamic State to be announced after enclave searched: SDF

Top US diplomat Mike Pompeo and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Wednesday to counter Iranian "aggression" as the two met in Jerusalem just weeks ahead of Israel's elections.

Netanyahu said US President Donald Trump's pressure on Iran was already having an effect, referring to his withdrawal from the landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers and the reimposition of sanctions.

"We need to increase it, we need to expand it, and together the United States and Israel are working in close coordination to roll back Iranian aggression in the region and around the world," the premier told journalists after Pompeo arrived.

Pompeo spoke of a Middle East conference in Warsaw last month that included Arab nations as well as Israel, saying the discussions involved efforts "to stop Iran's regional rampage" among other issues.

The US secretary of state also noted Iranian calls for Israel's destruction.

"With such threats a daily reality of Israeli life, we maintain our unparallelled commitment to Israel's security and firmly support your right to defend yourself," he said.

Netanyahu reiterated his pledge to keep Iran from entrenching itself militarily in neighbouring Syria, where the Islamic republic backs President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes there against what it says are Iranian and Hezbollah targets.

"There is no limitation to our freedom of action, and we appreciate very much the fact that the United States backs up our actions as we do them," Netanyahu said.

The premier, facing a stiff challenge from a centrist alliance in April 9 polls, will also visit Washington next week and meet with Trump twice while there.

Secretary of State <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/no-direct-evidence-between-saudi-crown-prince-and-khashoggis-killing-pompeo-180866">Mike Pompeo</a>, who has managed where others have failed to stay in President Donald Trump's good graces, joked Monday that he knows how he'll leave —&nbsp;when he learns on Twitter.

In a rare light-hearted comment about his notoriously mercurial boss, Trump's loyal top diplomat alluded to the inglorious fate of his predecessor, Rex Tillerson.

Asked at a forum in his home state of Kansas how long he will remain secretary of state, Pompeo said to the audience's laughter: "I'm going to be there until he tweets me out of office.

"Which I'm not counting on, at least today," Pompeo said, before praising Trump.

Pompeo, who served at the start of Trump's term as CIA director, is careful not to show any daylight with the president and has succeeded in becoming one of the rare original cabinet members who has not clashed with him.

Tillerson, a courtly former oil executive who pressed unsuccessfully for Trump to stay in international agreements, was sacked by tweet after he returned from a trip to Africa, with the White House letting it be known that he learned the news while on the toilet.

Pompeo, a former congressman popular with conservatives, has been recruited by top Republicans to run for an open Senate seat in Kansas next year when Trump is up for re-election.

He has been coy about his intentions. In an interview with his hometown newspaper The Wichita Eagle, Pompeo, an evangelical Christian, said of his political future: "The Lord will get me to the right place."

Pompeo returned to Kansas ahead of a trip to the Middle East for a conference on promoting opportunities for businesses from the American heartland.

The meeting will lead up to the June 4-5 "Global Entrepreneurship Summit" in The Hague that Pompeo will co-host with The Netherlands.

Echoing a Trump theme of anti-elitism, Pompeo said he wanted to recruit more diplomats away from the US coasts.

"The State Department prides itself on having a diverse workforce. There's many dimensions to that. I want to make sure everyone we hire is not from New York or Boston or Washington," he told the forum.

US State Secy Mike Pompeo slams Pakistan on terror

The United States is hopeful that it can continue to hold <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/north-korea-considering-to-suspend-nuclear-talks-with-us-report-203425">denuclearization talks</a> with North Korea, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday (March 15) following reports that a top Pyongyang official had said the country may suspend negotiations.

Pompeo, speaking at a news conference, also said he had every expectation that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would live up to his commitment not to resume nuclear and missile testing.

"We're hopeful that we can continue to have conversations, negotiations," the top US diplomat told reporters, adding that North Korea's Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui had left open the possibility of continued talks in the reported remarks.

"It's the administration's desire that we continue to have conversations around this," Pompeo added.

US officials have said they remain open to talks after the second summit between Kim and President Donald Trump collapsed last month with no deal, but have given no specifics.

US Secretary of State Pompeo says US hopes to continue talks with North Korea

US Secretary Of State Mike Pompeo will meet with top oil executives before he addresses a conference on Tuesday, seeking to get them to help the administration's effort to boost crude exports to Asia and to support its policy of isolating Iran, according to three people at two companies briefed on the agenda.

The outreach represents a significant new effort to sway industry executives to the Trump Administration’s “energy dominance” agenda that seeks to advance diplomatic and policy objectives through rapidly expanding US oil and gas exports. The effort has won success in convincing nations including China, Poland, Japan and South Korea to purchases more US oil and natural gas.

Pompeo plans on discussing how to boost US energy dominance worldwide, but particularly in Asia, and further isolate the Islamic Republic of Iran, which the United States re-imposed sanctions on last year, through strengthening ties with other Middle East nations, the people said. The location and time of the meeting was unclear.

Following the meeting in Houston, Pompeo is set to speak at IHS Markit's CERAWeek conference, the oil and gas industry’s largest annual gathering in the United States. He was scheduled to meet State Department employees in the late morning, according to an official schedule.

Executives from major companies including Chevron Corp, Total SA, Royal Dutch Shell PLC, ConocoPhillips and Occidental Petroleum Corp have been invited to the closed-door meeting. Representatives from a number of those companies are scheduled to speak earlier in the day at CERAWeek.

Occidental declined to comment. Chevron had no comment. A Total representative could not immediately be reached for comment. The other companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A US State Department spokesperson did not immediately comment on Pompeo's schedule but did say that Frank Fannon, the department's top energy diplomat, was meeting with energy companies on Tuesday in Houston to talk about the Asia policy.

According to two of the sources, Pompeo was expected in the closed-door meeting to discuss the Trump administration's plans for the Middle East Strategic Alliance (MESA), which would form an alliance of Sunni Muslim countries in the Gulf, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Egypt and Jordan, as the White House seeks to restrain Iran.

That group has become mired in a dispute between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, both important US allies in the region. The lead US negotiator for the alliance, Anthony Zinni, left the position earlier this year, putting a plan to promote Arab security and battle extremism in jeopardy.

Tuesday's sit-down was also expected to include discussions on the United States’ policy in Asia. Dubbed 'Asia Edge' by the administration, it aims to grow Asian energy security by further expanding US oil and gas exports to the region, according to the sources.

“The success of Asia Edge is highly dependent on what private industry does and then the work the government can do to support that,” the spokesperson at the State Department’s energy bureau said.

“The main message is how we can work best with the companies. Consequently engaging with the CEOs, especially on Asia Edge, is key because they're playing a much bigger role than we would have seen in other types of similar issues."

The United States produces more than 12 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude, making it the world's largest producer, and it is the world's biggest exporter of refined products like diesel fuel and gasoline.

It has expanded sales of fuels, crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Asian customers, including China in a bid to dominate worldwide energy trade after a four-decade ban on crude exports was ended by President Obama in 2016. The United States now exports more than 3 million bpd of crude.

The Trump White House has also imposed harsh sanctions on Iran and Venezuela, both members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), removing more than 2 million bpd of oil from daily global supply.

After the Iran sanctions were imposed, the United States granted waivers to eight countries that buy Iranian oil. The waivers, aimed at avoiding a spike in global crude prices, are due to expire in May. Some are not likely to be renewed, though analysts believe India and China, among the world's largest crude buyers, will continue to receive waivers.

Brian Hook, the State Department's top Iran diplomat, is scheduled to speak at CERAWeek in Houston on Wednesday morning on current US policy on Iran.

Indian foreign secretary meets Mike Pompeo, asks Pakistan to curb terror

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday expressed hope that India will support its efforts in Venezuela by not purchasing oil from the “authoritarian” Maduro regime.

The issue was discussed in a meeting with the visiting Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale, Pompeo told reporters at a news conference here, without providing insight into it.

“We are asking the same thing of India as we are of every country: Do not be the economic lifeline for the Maduro regime. So we talked about (Venezuela) – I certainly won’t characterize the conversations; they’re private conversations,” Pompeo said in response to a question.

“In the same way that India has been incredibly supportive of our efforts in Iran, I’m confident that they too understand the real threat to the Venezuelan people. We had a good conversation around that,” Pompeo said.

At a news conference, Pompeo said the nations that support Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro are, by the nature of this “illegitimate” regime, carrying out the very foreign interventionism of which they accuse others.

“Today, the United States is drawing a clear line between those who aid the forces of repression and those who give life to the Venezuelan people’s democratic dreams. There is no ambiguity here about the truth,” he said.

Similar kind of warning to other nations was issued by US National Security Adviser John Bolton.

“The United States will not stand idly by while foreign financial institutions facilitate illegitimate transactions that benefit Maduro and his cronies, and perpetuate the corruption that has devastated Venezuela,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the Treasury sanctioned a Russia-based bank attempting to circumvent US sanctions on Venezuela’s state-owned oil company PDVSA. It sanctioned Evrofinance Mosnarbank, a Moscow-based bank jointly owned by Russia and Venezuela, for being involved in facilitating illegitimate transactions that prolong Maduro’s usurpation of democracy, it said.

“The illegitimate Maduro regime has profited off of the suffering of the Venezuelan people,” said US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

“This action demonstrates that the United States will take action against foreign financial institutions that sustain the illegitimate Maduro regime and contribute to the economic collapse and humanitarian crisis plaguing the people of Venezuela,” he said.

In another tweet, Bolton asked international banks not to have a relationship with the Maduro regime.

“Bankers: Do not help Maduro and his accomplices steal the assets of the Venezuelan people. The United States is watching. The world is watching. The Venezuelan people are watching,” he said.

Maduro is facing a challenge from opposition leader Juan Guaido who declared himself acting president in January.

The US views Guaido as Venezuela’s legitimate leader and has imposed sanctions on the country’s oil sector besides taking other actions targeting top government officials.

Indian foreign secretary to meet Mike Pompeo, Pakistan terror funding high on agenda

Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale began a three-day visit to the US on Monday during which he will meet senior officials of the Trump administration and exchange views on major foreign policy and security-related developments, officials said.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said Gokhale is visiting Washington in connection with bilateral foreign office consultation and strategic security dialogue with his American counterparts.

During his visit, Gokhale is also likely to meet with senior leaders in the US administration and US Congress, he said in response to a query on the foreign secretary's visit.

The foreign secretary's visit to the US comes in the backdrop of growing tension between India and Pakistan.

"Foreign Secretary is visiting Washington DC on March 11-13 in connection with the bilateral foreign office consultation and strategic security dialogue with his US counterparts, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale and Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Andrea Thompson respectively," Kumar said.

"These are regular high-level dialogue mechanisms to review bilateral relations, exchange views on major foreign policy and security-related developments and coordinate respective positions on issues of common interest," he said.

Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after Indian fighter jets bombed terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed's biggest training camp near Balakot deep inside Pakistan on February 26.

Pakistan retaliated by attempting to target Indian military installations next day. However, the IAF thwarted their plans.

The Indian strike on the JeM camp was carried out 12 days after the terror outfit claimed responsibility for the Pulwama terror attack on a CRPF convoy in Kashmir, killing 40 soldiers.

India and the United States have called on Pakistan to act on terror and to dismantle terror infrastructure in the country.&nbsp;

According to a statement released by India's Ministry of External Affairs after a meeting between India's Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale and US Secretary of State Michael R Pompeo in Washington, the two "agreed that Pakistan needs to take concerted action to dismantle the terrorist infrastructure and to deny safe haven to all terrorist groups in its territory".

The two also agreed that those "who support or abet terrorism in any form should be held accountable".&nbsp;

The announcements come against the backdrop of the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/awantipora-crpf-convoy-hit-by-explosives-laden-vehicle-several-jawans-killed-197418">February 14 Pulwama terrorist attack</a> for which the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed terror group has claimed responsibility.&nbsp;

Gokhale conveyed his appreciation to the US government and to Secretary Pompeo "personally for the firm support that India received from the US" in the aftermath of the Pulwama terrorist attack. Secretary Pompeo in turn expressed his "understanding of India's concerns regarding cross-border terrorism."

On trade, the foreign secretary "underscored the significant reduction in trade deficit" in the last three years and conveyed "India's willingness to remain engaged with the US for a meaningful and mutually acceptable package".&nbsp;

Remember, the US announced recently that it would withdraw the Generalised System of Preferences (duty benefits which Washington gives to many countries) it accords to India. The withdrawal will come into effect in about 60 days.

Gokhale and Pompeo also discussed the Afghan peace process and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.&nbsp;

Vijay Gokhale and Pompeo to meet in Washington DC

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido vowed Tuesday to step up the pressure on President Nicolas Maduro as he offered his backing to a potential public sector strike.

The 35-year-old <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/opposition-leader-guaido-calls-for-mass-protests-ahead-of-return-to-venezuela-monday-200975">National Assembly leader returned home to a hero's welcome on Monday</a>, having defied a ban on leaving the country to embark on a 10-day tour of South American allies and remains free after returning despite the threat of arrest by the government.

"They're drowning in contradictions, they don't know how to respond to Venezuela's people," Guaido told reporters. "They thought the pressure had reached its zenith, but it's only just beginning."

On Tuesday, a national holiday, he met public sector union leaders.

"Public sector workers have lost practically all their rights, we have no other option but to call for a civic strike," said Guaido, without giving further details.

Battered by an economic meltdown, Venezuela descended into a major political crisis when Guaido declared himself interim president in January and asserted that Maduro was no longer legitimate.

Recognized by more than 50 countries as Venezuela's acting president, Guaido flouted a government travel ban on February 22 to head off and rally support for his bid to oust Maduro.

When he returned to Caracas -- his latest challenge to Maduro's authority -- Guaido announced to tens of thousands of supporters a new demonstration on Saturday.

Guaido has vowed to set up a transitional government and hold new elections.

On Tuesday, US envoy Elliott Abrams said that given Maduro's low popularity, it would be "a gift" if he decided to run in fresh polls.

"That's ultimately a decision for Venezuelans to make," Abrams said.

'Paralysed public administration'

As part of his challenge to Maduro, Guaido is attempting to take control of the state bureaucracy, which he considers having been "kidnapped" through blackmail and persecution.

Unions from the oil industry, basic services, the public bank and local government took part in Tuesday's meeting, union leader Ana Yanez told AFP.

"The public administration is practically paralysed. In the town halls, people only go to work three days a week and even then barely half the day," said Yanez.

Maduro finally made an appearance in the late afternoon to lead a military parade paying tribute to his predecessor Hugo Chavez on the sixth anniversary of the socialist firebrand's death.

Standing in front of Chavez's mausoleum, Maduro also called on his supporters to take to the streets on Saturday, to mark "four years since" then-US president Barack Obama first announced sanctions against the socialist government.

Maduro has done this before, calling his own counter-demonstration every time Guaido announces a protest.

Both attract thousands of supporters, but the opposition gatherings usually have the edge in numbers.

Maduro had been active on Twitter earlier in the day, again paying tribute to Chavez.

"Thanks to your teachings and your example we're continuing the permanent fight against those who tried so many times to extinguish your voice," wrote Maduro.

During his travels, Guaido met US Vice President Mike Pence and the leaders of Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Chile and Ecuador.

He crossed into Colombia on February 23 to lead a bid to bring in humanitarian aid stockpiled near the border, but the move was blocked by the military and security forces in a day of chaos and bloodshed.

Venezuela is wracked by a humanitarian crisis that has seen poverty soar, with an estimated 2.7 million people leaving the country since 2015.
